Title: The First Three Pages of Hall Cosplay winners are up
Post by: SailorNaboo on September 13, 2004, 08:25:53 pm
They aren't linked to the site yet, and we may end up moving servers, but if you want to take a peek, here you go:

http://waxwolf.com/kumoricon/2004/set1/

I'm still waiting for pictures that were taken with cameras other than my own and we'll put them up when we get them.

Enjoy!

Hooray!  Those are so much fun to look at!  I love the one of Pyramid Head and James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2, but I think James looks unworried.  Don't underestimate him, James!  Run!!!

Is there any particular reason that so few (only two!) Naruto cosplayers made it in? Yet so many Inu-Yasha....

The judges picked costumes that caught their attention.  Most of the awards were given out by the Portland Costumer's Guild and perhaps (just a guess) if they saw tons of the same costume, perhaps they started blending into the background.

And yet, there may be tons of them on the other two cameras that pictures, I don't know.  Since neither of them were Naurto fans as far as I know, the costumes would have had to stand on their own.  Naurato was certainly well represented in the Cosplay Contest.  :)

Yeah, they probably got a lot of peoples names wrong but MY name is cool- Ashley Hazard. They called me Ashley HACARD! What kind of name is Hacard????????? HAZARD RULES ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We were all relying on what each cos-Player wrote down on the paperwork they turned in (this is for both Hall cosplay and the cosplay competition). If we couldn't read the writing, we guessed at what the combination of letters said. Sometimes we guessed right, other times we didn't. The only advice I can offer is that if you wish to have your name spelled correctly, please be sure to print neatly and clearly in block letters so that we can read what you wrote no matter how tired we are...

Um... for the Wolfwood named Zach?
I went shopping with him for his costume, helped him pick out everything, altered his suit for him, (minus the cross and change of buttons which were done by his mom) and completely wrapped the cross that he made....
Was I supposed to get anything? Or at least get some sort of credit or something for doing a lot of the work on the costume?
Just wondering.

Hi Naru,

Yes, you should.  This is our first year of really documenting hall cosplay and trying to get so many pictures up that some details may have fallen through the cracks.  The people who awarded the ribbon were supposed to ask who made the costume.  If it was someone else, the person was to still get his or her picture taken as "model," the maker's name was to be taken and then the ribbon was to be worn by the cosplayer at the con, and then the cosplayer should have been asked to forward the ribbon to the person who made the costume.

Yet another item on the list of things to improve for next year.  Go ahead and PM me with your information.  (Make sure to tell me which page and which costume, I mostly only watch anime with magical girls, so I don't always know who is who).

Just think of it as an offshoot of "Alucard," who is damn cool. ;)

So, is that your character's name? I've never heard of a last like "Hazard." 8O And no, the Dukes of Hazzard don't count.

The Sailor Mercury cosplayer, her last name is wrong. It's "Samantha Rucker".

On Set 2, Mike Stark isn't "Zhinge Liang" from Dynasty Warriors 4, he is "Zhuge Liang" from Dynasty Warriors 4.

Just a quick typo correction that may want to be taken care of.

I walked by him on one of the days, and said "Hey, its Zhuge Liang", it was nice to see a Dynasty Warriors cosplayer. I am kicking myself for missing the Da Qiao, though. After seeing the next page, I clearly see there was also a Pang Tong.

Good DW costumes!

Another typo, Tony Tony Chopper's name got spelled wrong, though I guess that could be based on interpretation of the name, from what I know, most people spell it with the Y at the end.

Good stuff though.

In my opinion, there are too many Miroku cosplayers that won.

I'm surprised alot of costumes I thought where good aren't on here.

FilkAeris had the best Sakura I believe.

Matt had great Itachi/Sasuke costumes going on.

In my personal opinion, alot of people that had great costumes should have been on here and aren't. But, again, I guess its based on the interpretation and personal opinions of the judges.

Good job though.  :)

Hi Spork,
The pictures we have up are the ones that were taken with my camera.  There were two other cameras used and I'm waiting for the owners to forward the pictures to me.  That's why we've held off on putting a link from the main page to the gallery.

I'lll keep poking the people who have the rest of the pictures and remind them.

As one of the judges, I can safely say that the judging was also based upon the physial location of said "great cosplayers who didn't get hall costume awards" versus location of hall cosplay award judges. If I didn't see your costume; I didn't give you an award. Same for the other 4 or 5 judges.

Each judge spent varying amounts of time in various locations. Since we were attending the convention with the intent to have fun, we actually went to various panels and other events rather than just trolling the halls for hall cosplay award winners the whole time. In addition, given that there were 1250 or so people present and given that some people wore a particular costume for only a few hours and only attended a particular event we couldn't possibly have seen every costume.

As for the "too many Mirokus"winning hall cosplay... well, there are also a bunch of Wolfram (I think...the guy with the cross from Trigun) who won hall cosplay, but you didn't complain about THAT... so it seems that it bothers you to see lots of recognition given to characters you don't care about, but it's OK for there to be lots of recognition to characters you do like. There were also a ton of people cosplaying as Naruto characters. From photos on obsessedwithanime.com, it seems that the Naruto people all hung out at the waterfront park for several hours during the con. Since the judges were in the hotel, many of those Naruto people weren't even seen.

Don't forget that SOME of the photos were taken on a different camera, so those have not yet been posted. Also, some people may have not gotten their photos taken.

Hi Dustin,
Thanks for the note on the typos.

Just so you know, there might be a lot of great costumes that we missed.  It just depends on if the cosplayer crossed paths with the judges while he or she was wearing that costume.  There is some luck involved.[/i]

Wolfram?  Wormwood?

And I figured Trigun was the anime staple, here...

I watched Trigun a while ago and forgot who the guy was.    Not everyone likes or has watched all the anime that you like and watched. That's why I'd said I didn't know for sure what the guy's name was...I didn't like Trigun and had no reason to really bother remembering all the character's names.

Also, this should also explain why we'd asked that everyone write neatly and clearly in the book of Hall Cosplay winners -- so we could tell what the character's name and the person's names were....

Actually, I never even noticed that there was more than one Wolfwood, as I only ever saw one at the con, aswell. So I assumed that there was only one.

FYI, just because I made the comment about Miroku, doesn't mean I do not like his character. If I didn't like the anime he was from, I wouldn't watch it. Miroku is a favorite character of mine, that doesn't change the fact that about every single person who cosplayed Miroku won.

To me, it seems a bit too coincidental.

Of course, you assume I dislike Miroku because of that, which is a stupid assumption (which leads me to see you as such, aswell).

Ok, you found us out.  Yes, there was a BIG Miroku conspiracy!  We were paid millions of dollars by the Anime Industry and the Japanese government to make sure every Miroku got a prize at Kumoricon in Portland, Oregon!  Millions I tell you.  It took a lot of organization and all the judges were shown pictures of every single outfit that she might wear!  They tirelessly haunted the halls and every event avoiding much better costumes to reward Mirokus!

Our millions of Yen now sits in a Swiss Bank Account...and we would have gotten away with it too, if you haven't caught my denial of Muroku rather than Miroku...

But you were just too smart for me.  And now the word is out about our evil plan!

The moment (or at least within a day) of when they get sent to me.  I have pleas in the Staff section and have asked at meetings as well.

This is one of the reason I'm looking for a person to run Hall Cosplay for next year.  That way all the pictures will be in one place and the infodesk won't have to handle the role of picture taking (they have too much to do already).
