Just last week, while I was at Uwajimaya, I took a flyer that said something about a Sakura Festival happening there this year on Saturday April, 19th 2008. The event lasts from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. There will be:
Portland Bentham Lions van/free hearing, sight and cholesterol screenings, shaved ice, taiyaki(always delicious in my book!), calligraphy, origami demos, sheradan taiko, sakura kai(?), fujinami kai, musician Mitch Limori, mitsuki dazai with the koto, A-Key Kyo, Japanese band Kohitsuji, Japanese preschool, monmouth taiko , isson tea ceremony, vendors and much more!!!
I'm definately going to go and if possible, I may cosplay as well. I'm also pretty sure there'll be some cosplayers there as well, by the way does anyone know if there's going to be a Kumoricon booth set up there, because I have'nt pre-registered yet.
-
Ahhh, no kidding, I look forward to this festival every year. Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to pull together a cosplay or decora thing!
-
Hmm...it's the week after my friend's wedding and the week before prom. Go figure lol
-
Ooh, this sounds like fun, and it's only two days after Clark's sakura festival
-
My friend is getting married this day, I'll have to see if I can swing both events :'(
-

If I can make it as L from Death-Note, that would be awesome. Only problem is finding a GOOD WIG for his hair..... :(
-
oooo i was wondering when they were going to do that! eve-boyfriend and i will surely try to be there, most likely cosplaying ^.^
and yay a-key kyo!! they're too awesome <3
-
Awesome! I always look forward to this! =3 I'll definitely be there as Matt from Death Note. Can't wait! >w<
-
What Laurifer means is that its the week after MY wedding. ;)
There will be a booth at the Sakurafest for sure. It's one of our biggest events for pre-registrations every year and we love Uwajimaya!
I will definitely be there. I need to buy a new shirt form my mario costume... or maybe I should wear Gendo again. Hmmmm.... We'll see what the weather is like.
-
Hmmm. Should I go as Haruhi (Ouran), or random Japanese fashion chick?
-
I think I'm gonna wear my Pokemans shirt if I go :D
-
I may just have to call in sick to work that day! :) :D
-
Tom, do you know if they need pre-reg table help on that day?
-
I am sure that they do, sign ups haven't started yet but it's not too early to get that together.
Just keep in touch with Jeff and Andrew since the event is publicity and most of the work done at the event is registration.
That goes for all the rest of you volunteers and staff as well!
-
Hmm, gonna see if my sister wants to wake up super early to take me to this ;D
-
I will be there, sounds like fun
-
Man, I just hope it won't rain again. D: That kinda sucked last year because the store was all crowded.
-
Nuts I'm moving into my new apartment on that weekend. Go figure.
-
i just bought fabric for my berries and cream lad costume... perhaps if i find shoes and a wig and sew it all together i could have it done by then and wear it to the festival o.O *ponders*
-
I think I might dress in bantanen costume, just need to find a way to get ears to stay on.
-
....Maybe I can go if I tell my parents I'll get extra credit in Japanese.
If I can get all caught up with my homework, I bet my mom will let me break out the sewing machine and I can get Misa done by then.
Edit: Ahahahahaha, the 19th is my school's Prom night.
Good thing I'm not going to it. 8D
-
I'll see how my finances are, since I'm saving up to go to Otafest in May.
-
but it is free....
-
I'm gonna go in my cookin mama cosplay
-
its happening so soon?! i had no idea! o-o geez, i better make sure i dont have work that day...
-
but it is free....
Oh yes, but I tend to, shall we say, "stock up" when I go to Uwajimaya.
-
yeah going to uwajimaya with out $$ is just a tease
-
Man, I just hope it won't rain again. D: That kinda sucked last year because the store was all crowded.
QFT. I remember that. :(
-
You know I'll be there. A-Key Kyo will always draw me out, whatever the weather. ^_^

Ah! Drama camp flashbacks!
"Whether the weather is cold,
Whether the weather is hot,
we'll be together, whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not."
>_<
Dangit...

How many people usually show up in cosplay? I'm definitely going, but I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb if I end up being the only person in cosplay.

I'll no doubt be there in cosplay. I'll take any reason to. XD
-
Atashi - you certainly won't be the only one, don't worry.
-
i'm sure i'll cosplay too, just not sure which i'll wear... lol
and yay a-key kyo! it's been too long since i've seen them >.<
-
I saw this advertised last time I was there, it looks like so much fun! Wish I could get up there but doubt I could get a ride x.x;;
Though if I can show up, I'll prancing around in some frilly lil Lolita dress :-*
-
i'll probably go from 11 till like 2 or 3 so i can make it to work =( I'll be around with a fox jacket and probably a fox tail
-
HOLY CRAP I AM SO GOING.
XD I wonder....I might have my umbrella thingy done by then....But who to go as....which means I'll probably be in cosplay....
It'd be cool to try this year's mascot....Seeing as I can do her hair and I have a base for the dress....Oh...What will be the policy on props? Could I bring an umbrella without getting tackled?
-
I'm going!?
-
I'm going!?
DX Why ish thar a question mark?!
.....>.>....<.<.....?
-
Yeah i'm gonna bus it so if anyone lives around portland, wants to meet up and take a trip down thats fine only 1.75 each way if you don't have a pass
-

Quite a few people cosplay, I may cosplay this year but since I will be helping run the booth I may just do the typical staff shirt and cat ears ^^
-
I'll be there, with my nekomimi
-
I will be there, but my wife has to work that day..........so sad.
-
I'll be there. Possibly with bells on.
-
I love going to this.
Is it really on the 19th?
Poo, I might not be able to go.
; ;
-
Yep, we have a table on April 19! It's now listed on the web site calendar.
Uwajimaya is also hosting a 10th anniversary multi-cultural festival on May 17, and we have a table there too! This festival is more diverse than just Japanese culture, and includes a variety of communities.

Yeah, I just had inari the other day, which surely primed my tastebuds, heh.
Oh, and speaking of Uwajimaya, Kahlan-gf and I went there today, but first we ate at Hakatamon (The restaurant connected to Uwajimaya). That is an awesome place! We actually were greeted with "Irassiyaimase" as we walked in. That made my day, lol. And the staff were awesome there, the atmosphere was cozy and nice. And the food......well, the food was "priscilla" (think about it, think about it...) ^_^
-
I've never heard of the multi-cultural festival...is it their first?
Actually, it is. It's the 10th anniversary of the Beaverton store, but the first time for the May festival. :)

I almost drooled when I tried describing it to my friends XD
-
I want fresh takoyaki. I know they had it at least one time... :'(

Never had it!
-
I'll be trying to attend this, though I dun think I'll cosplay for it.
-
Oh, and speaking of Uwajimaya, Kahlan-gf and I went there today, but first we ate at Hakatamon (The restaurant connected to Uwajimaya).
I love that place, kendo boyfriend and I go there all when ever we can, I recomend the butashogoyaki (ginger pork) and onigiri temusu,(has tempura shrimp in it)
If we can't stay to eat I'll get a tempura onigiri to go and the lady knows me by sight, its like this
cashier: "usual? temusu onigiri?"
me :"yes please"
cashier :"10 mins and 2.75$"

haha, that's awesome. That's the feeling I got from the moment I walked in; it seemed like the kind of place where one could become a "regular", and have a very familial feel. Good times. ^_^ And I will have to remember those dishes. I had some yakiudon (I don't remember which kind), but it was very delicious.
-
OMFG I'm so going to that! Ugh I wish I had my Axel cosplay finished! (I don't wanna go in my D. Grey-Man one)
-
Just my luck, I lost my wallet.
It had all my money in it - all the cash was accumulated birthday presents.
Sooo.
Now I'm basically broke 'cause my debit card was in there too.
I don't know if I'll be able to go unless this all gets sorted out. D:

that sucks, you might be able to withdraw cash if you go to your bank and show id.... perhaps =P
-
And the Sakura festival is free
-
But, it's utter terror going through Uwajimaya with the sale and no money. Or, so I've heard. XD

New one's getting here in 7-10 days, so says my dad. (After canceling the one I lost)
Time to learn about ATMs :D I don't have it through a local bank. :[
...I thank my school for printing off two IDs for me by accident this year. :D Otherwise I'd have to pay for a replacement.
But, it's utter terror going through Uwajimaya with the sale and no money. Or, so I've heard. XD
It's painful to go through without money period, what're you talking about? xD

-
Ok, I heard there's a chance of snow on Saturday. What the hell?? oAo
Whaaaa?
How does that even work? xD Last weekend was finally Spring-y. Now it's going back to winter?
If I do get it finished, I hope Misa will be warm enough. owO;
-
It's gonna be totally awesome. I guarantee it.

Good luck with Misa though! Yay for DN cosplay! *-*
Either way it will be awesome like Laurifer said. 8D
-
if it does snow it will just save us money on shaved ice!
tho if it really snowed i would so buy some anyway, just think it wouldnt melt fast!!
and i bet it would make the taiyaki taste better
-
i think i might make cupcakes for all the forums-ers for satruday... be prepared for a berries and cream "lad" holding a tray of cupcakes... perhaps while trying to dance... o.O
-
@ Shadow: I may or may not do the DN cosplay. I might just bring my Death Note just for giggles though *cough*ifanyonewantstowritesomeone'sname*cough*
@ Kahlan: ZOMG you are full of win!
-
Bawww, there goes my transportation =_= Sound so much fun. Oh wells, hope everyone else who's going will have a blast

Seriously?? That is a definite WIN. Serious epic win.
Yay I can't wait! As it stands now I'll be there with two of my friends. Don't know if my friend will go as Aeris again or not. I'll have to ask.
-
Yayyyyy I can't wait Saturday come faster!!!
I have a secret outfit planned...maybe o___O
-
ooooooooooooo secret outfit o.O *ponders* i'm sure it will be worthy of a cupcake ^.^
i need to start my little lad outfit... but i can't seem to unglue myself from the forums... dun dun dun o.O
-
Yaaay I can't wait to meet you guys, I'll be taking lots of pictures!
-
Provided that it DOESN'T SNOW on Saturday, I'll definately be there...but as L, unfortunately I don't have the black eyeliner or the spiky hair that makes him so recognizable... :'( maybe I'll just show up in either a Megatokyo or Inuyasha shirt wearing cat-ears instead. Also, I'm planning to invite some people to eat at the restaurant in Uwajimaya, what was called...Hakatamon or something? (but I don't know if they have some sort of menu there so that I can prepare what I'm going to order or how much everything is....) and I will be taking lots of pictures, so show up in your best cosplay!!
-
I can't wait!! =D Still planning on cosplaying as Matt rain or not.
Can't wait to see everyone!!
-
I hope the snow doesn't ruin everything n____n
I'm counting on your camera, totemo!
-
Be sure to post some pics after the festival! :D

There wasn't any last year. The only place I've had it in Portland was the Sushiland a couple blocks north of Powells, on 11th st.

What is that? It looks like some sort of ball (octopus balls? shrimp shumai?), or is it taiyaki?
Oh, and I will definitely be bringing my camera with me this time. I haven't decided if I want to cosplay or not. I'm kind of not feeling like going all out with Barret this weekend, and I have nothing else that I can reasonably do. So, yeah, I might just go as Obvious Otaku No. 16 (out of 79, mind you!).......and yes I just made all that up.
-
There wasn't any last year. The only place I've had it in Portland was the Sushiland a couple blocks north of Powells, on 11th st.
Sushiland has a pre-made takoyaki, but it isn't anywhere near as good as the stuff made from scratch :( It's kind of like cheap Nissin Ramen compared to the most absolutely fresh stuff you can buy in a real soup base.
-
The picture I posted has people making fresh takoyaki.
-
Ah, looks tasty!

rain n snow n cold weather, like it really matters, we've all gone o sakurafests in cold wet rainy weather before, and we will again, its too good to miss

That was when my wife tried takoyaki for the first time now she eats it all the time.

I'm sure no matter what it'll still be fun. ^^ Today I'll be getting my cosplay stuff ready to go, and I need to find out when my friends and I are going. XD
I can't wait to get some takoyaki again! *-* (tried it for the first time at the Japan Festival last year)
-
Hmm....maybe I'll cosplay D. Grey man there... But I am so going!
-
According to the map Jeff posted there's no takoyaki D:

NOOOO!!! DDDD: *sob* How can they not have it??

I dont think it would be on the map would it, i think the peeps selling were part of te store or somthing cuz they didnt have a booth but a stand near the entrance
if they do have it remeber to get vannila first as it has been know to sell out
-
There is still hope!
Ok, got everything figured out. ^^ My friends and I will be there around 12:30/1-ish
-
We will be there 11:30-noon ish!
-
I'll be there before the festival even opens!(around 9:45 or somewhere close to that.....)
-
I'll try to be there around 9 or 10!!! Awww, I can't wait. It's the debut of the first cosplay I ever made! And WITHOUT a sewing machine....T.T My fingers hurt SO bad. But it's worth it! XD So, I'll definetly see some people there. I'll probably be hanging out around the KumoriCon booth. Look for Sakura, ne?
-
Meep I'm excited too! >w< If you see me come over and say hi! Look for the fluffy vest and goggles, can't miss me. ^^b
-
^-^ I will! XD
-
i will be going we no cosplay for me though. don't have anything ready ::) *coughlazycough*
but if i remember i mite wear one of the last 2 years shirts from kcon :D
-
With a stroke of luck, I has finished my outfit of awesomeness! It's not a cosplay...but it's still cool! Shoot, if I had a blond wig I could be sexy no jutsu Mello :3
-
i'll be around noonish as well, i'll be in a fox hoodie and wearing a laughing man messenger bag =P
-
I'll try to be there around noon with my hisoka cosplay =3 *scrounged it up, after all*
Someone let me cling to them >:
(btw, anyone know any good way to temp bleach/ make your eyebrows lighter? o_o
-
(btw, anyone know any good way to temp bleach/ make your eyebrows lighter? o_o
I was actually looking into this same subject a while ago. They say that it's REALLY dangerous! So, what I did was go to Sally's Beauty Supply and get some of Claudia Stevens' Hair Highlighter. http://www.amiyuy.com/truecolors/cosplay/images/Sakura/hairhilighters.jpg I don't know how well it will work for certain colors, since it's not amazing for me. [I got pink. ugh.] I'm pretty sure it was under $10, to be safe. But, I guess it worked REALLY well for this one girl. Remember that eyebrows are always dark than the hair color!
-
I will be there early like 9ish my girl will be in haruhi outfits and my son will be in a blue chinese outfit. No cosplay for me as mine is not ready, I will just sport my domo-kun beanie
-
I'm probably going to be there around 10 to 12 ish?
Anyway, I don't think I'll cosplay, I have my D.Grey-Man cosplay but it's pleather and get's hot really fast, well it is gonna be cold I guess, and I don't have my Axel cosplay done. (I could wear my bunny stuff though)
-
Uwaahhh stupid makeup stuff not working
-
I'll be there around noon as well. I won't be cosplaying as any specific character. Just wearing my normal extremely goth clothing. lol. You'll see me with the small red and black wings. ^^ Big clunky boots as well.
-
That was so fun! If anyone saw me, I was the Kakashi. :D I was with Syd-chan most of the time. It was aweesoommeeee!
-
I was there at around 10:00 in the morning, in my L Lawliet cosplay(but no black eyeliner, long pair of handcuffs, or pale skin :'(). I mainly took around 31 pictures while looking at some of the booths, I also got pre-registered for this year's Kumoricon, but they couldn't print out any badges because the guy who does that got into a traffic accident, so yeah that angered me quite a bit, because I have to wait for a long while for my badge to come in the mail....
But, still after that I enjoyed some of the vanilla custard filled taiyaki, met some of my friends from the forum and ate lunch and went shopping in Uwajimaya, so it wasn't so bad.
-
Did I see you? Were you one of the L's that got a picture together at the beginning? If so, then SWEET.
-
Ne, that was AWESOME. I am so tired, though....X.X I had so many pictures taken. Oh, and I got a picture of Totemo and Laurifer!! XD
-
Did I see you? Were you one of the L's that got a picture together at the beginning? If so, then SWEET.
Yes! I was one out of the two L's that was there. Thank you for noticing that.

Heheh, hey, it was too fun to not! And I STILL want some of that candy bar. XD
-
I was the Misa hanging around another L; we got there around 2:30 pm~
It was fun, and I bought (along with Keru, my L) lots of bread and candy.
I tried Choco Pan, omnomnom. <3

So that was you! I saw you, was uber-impressed with your boots and outfit. I wasn't dressed as anything, just me with goggles on my head. But yeah, your boots rocked. *thumbs up*

Were you the Misa I met in the bookstore? ^^
I had fun! Wish it would have been better weather though. My wig/goggles really started to give me a bad headache too. >< It was still cool to see everyone again! Hopefully Uwajimaya's anniversary festival in May will be in better weather!

It was fun, and I bought (along with Keru, my L) lots of bread and candy.
I tried Choco Pan, omnomnom. <3
Were you the Misa I met in the bookstore? ^^
I had fun! Wish it would have been better weather though. My wig/goggles really started to give me a bad headache too. >< It was still cool to see everyone again! Hopefully Uwajimaya's anniversary festival in May will be in better weather!
That I was~ ^^
Kind of wish that the weather was more like last weekend. :[
(And if my parents are willing to take me to the anniversary festival...Misa will *hopefully* be done. The real version. >w< Today was another closet cosplay)
-
I'm still amazed that it snowed o_o
Not because of the whole 'late winter' thing, but more like WHY THIS WEEKEND??? DDD:
But it still was fun xDD
Some people from the forums recognized me, but I didn't recognize them, so I was screaming about stalkers at them xDDD
I can't recognize a lot of people out of cosplay for the first time :'D

Hi Misa!!! =D It was so nice meeting you and L. You two were so sweet!
My god, that was a closet cosplay? oO It looked great!! Can't wait to see the real thing!
I thought it was just hail.. did it really snow?? O.O
-
It was soooo cold. I was there for about 20 minutes before I ran away.
-
it was sunny, it was rainy, it was sunny, it was hailing, then it snowed, then the sun came out and then it rained again, then the sun was out then it rained and it sleeted and it was windy the whole time... w t f.... -.- weather epic failed today... and i sat through all of it in my cosplay while freezing and have come to the realization that indeed i am anemic and need more iron so i dont feel so cold all the time....
-
I had alot of fun today and can finally feel my toes again. The taiyaki was so good i wish i could make it at home.
-
The weather changed so much that I started to get sick and had to leave ;-;

Sounds like some liked it, and some didn't then. I almost got some train tickets to go down there from Seattle, but I looked at the Beaverton forecast and decided not to go. The weather changes up here pretty randomly, too, but I didn't want to take a CHANCE at being rained on while paying some $60 (roundtrip ticket) for some delicious taiyaki.

Hopefully the festival on May 17th will have a better forcast!!

I second that!

I didn't get as many pictures as I wanted, seeing as how my camera was running out of battery.
That, and my hands were pretty much frozen from the cold. Hahaha
It was nice meeting a couple of you! ;D
-
Yay pictures! And they turned out well, too. ^_^
-
It was a lot of fun despite the weather! I got to meet some of you guys ^___^
The wait for the taiyaki was worth it though~
-
yes it was =D~ i was also in line just in time to get one of the last vanilla custards woo. its so true that it tastes so good when your cold. was almost shivering all over and had numb fingers so i could barely pay for them xD but it was worth it =DD~
-
Hey leashy I saw you there. Well I pay to get in Kumoricon, Yeshh! It was fun intill it rain. When I was running to my friend car to go home the band that was playing played Naruto as me and my friends ran. It was so perfect! ;D

Yeahhhh. I had to wait in line for over an hour! My fingers were numb until I had the brilliant idea to cover them with my hair so they were not anymore (although they were still super cold) and I was moving around a little to keep myself from freezing. If I had known I would have to wait that long, I probably would've worn an extra layer of clothing (in addition to the few that I was already wearing). Might've worn gloves as well. :P
-
Me, I didn't cosplay, I fired up my bike and took it for a spin to the festival. So I had jeans and leathers. However when it started snowing I wasn't excited, two wheels + ice + freeway = not good.
Special thanks to steve for standing in line and getting me taiyaki.
-
I had a great time. ^^ It was really fun, though I was freeeeeeeeezing in my skimpy little outfit. ^^' I had a great time hanging with Hazuza and Cassiopeia. And thanks for the compliment on the boots. ^^ lol
-
So I was there. But DAMN, they've gotta do something about that taiyaki line. There's no reason someone should be in line 45 minutes for a waffle! They *know* the custard ones sell better than the red bean ones, so why do they make LESS of them?
-
My friend wanted to try the taiyaki, but after waiting in line for 12 minutes we just said screw it. I felt bad because she really wanted one. ;-; It was just too cold. What can't they do something to speed up the process?

There were these two elderly women in front of use (who were really nice!) who waited as long as we did for the taiyaki (30+ minutes) and they were REALLY close to ordering (like, right in front of the stand underneath the little booth cover thing) but for some reason they just left...it made us really sad since they were so close yet they walked away and waited for nothing :'(
-
those are always super popular... im not suprised that they ran out of the custard ones, they did last year too. The line is often because people order alot of them (since they are reasonably priced) and since they make em the old fashion way and they are warm when you get them I really can't complain other than to say maybe they should make more of the custard ones and less of the redbean ones though those are good too!
lol good news i found shoes for the kcon girl cosplay at goodwill!!
-
They're a huge store. They can afford more taiyaki irons (or whatever you call the presses). They'd get their money back in no time.
-
T_T
I was just sitting at home in front of my computer on Saturday and I totally spaced out on the festival. I lose.

That's so sad.. ;-; To be waiting that long and just walk away. We had a hard enough time walking away after 12 minutes..

I should go find a taiyaki iron one of these days and help meet the overwhelming demand :D

And then have it confiscated (and sold on ebay) by the airport.

Hahaha they'd be like "ma'am, you can't bring a fish shaped hammer into the united states"
me: "it's not a hammer!!!"
them: "knowing you, you'd probably use it like one" XD

I was home from college that weekend and my parents decided to go to Uwajimaya and on the way there I was talking about the festival and didn't even know that it was going on. we pulled into the parking lot and saw a bunch of tents and I get really excited. Being a poor college student I convinced my parents to pay for the badge. ^_^ On top of that we got like $100 worth of food. I love Asian food X3

Yay, milkin the parentals. That's always good times, lol. ^_^ I jest, but yes, I'm glad to hear you got your badge! I just got mine in the mail today. *dances*
But, anyway, where do you normailly go to college?
-
Part of the reason the taiyaki lines were so long was there was a few people when I was there that ordered 15-20 of them all at once.

I go to OSU. I'm almost done with my second year and I am loving every minute of it. Now I just can't wait till I turn 21
-
A lot to do for the 21+ crowd out in that area? That's Eugene, right? Yeah, I've heard of some of the stuff that goes down out there, heh.
-
^actually osu is the one in corvallis ^.^
-
There not a whole lot to do in Corvallis, there is a lot more in Eugene. It would just be fun to hang out with friends at a bar or a club. But we are getting way off topic here XD.
-
Sweet! This is the day before my birthday so I might get my friends from Corvallis down here and we can go to that then probably cosplay on my birthday somewhere XD
-
Hope this isn't too terribly off topic, considering from what I can see this is a discussion on a past event, but is there another festival this weekend? Or perhaps it is the next... I am remembering this from a far gone conversation, forgive me. XD; If this is so, will anyone be attending? =)
-
it is the next weekend and is called japan fest

Thar be new threads for the Festival Japan.
