Title: Last-minute Announcement and Introduction for Kumoricon 2005
Post by: modab on September 08, 2004, 09:49:28 pm
(If you find this post confusing, or you want to know more, please pm or email me, it's late at night and I'm not so good at words right now!)

Hi everybody, you may all know me from Kumoricon 2004 as Peter Verrey, Director of Programming (and video monkey). This year, at least until our first General Meeting, I am not only Acting Director of Programming, but I have been self-selected to be the Acting Personnel Manager, a new position which combines both some of the responsibilities of the Communications Officer, and most duties of the Volunteer Coordinator, which position will no longer exist.

The very last-minute announcement is that there is an informal Thursday meeting in Eugene Oregon at 6:30 opposite the University of Oregon Bookstore. Yes, that is tomorrow. No, you probably can't make it, but at least you know it's happening, right?
We tend to have meetings every Thursday in Eugene at that time and location, but we know that a lot of our staff this year is in Portland, so we will be working with you to set up meetings up there, too.

We will be having a General Meeting in Portland in about 30 days, and the exact date, time, and location will be posted right here, and also sent to anyone who gives me their email. (mine is peterverrey@gmail.com)

So basically, if you intend to do something for the con this year, you should let me know, and also let me know how to get in contact with you so other people can as well!

Hooray for Kumoricon 2005!

Peter Verrey

I'm glad you'll be setting up meetings in Portland as well, because I will be able to make it to those. Oh, great... Now I have to check my schedual of classes...

I'm interested in getting involved and helping out but I live in Seattle.  Coming to Eugene or Portland for meetings is problematic to say the least.  Some direction please on what I might be able to contribute?  Thanks!

Yeah, I'd love to be part-time staff next year, but I live down in Sutherlin.
+ I have no ride.
= I can't make the meetings.

I have enough room for three more people in my car.  Matt, you know I can drive you.  Anyone else who may want a ride just needs to give gas money and not smoke.  The only problem is that I cannot make every meeting, so I'd probably just be able to attend the really super important ones.  Oh, by the way I was the guy who Magnus followed around everywhere and who also enjoyed night security Sat and Sun.

Edit- Did I mention I would like to be a staffish person next year?  Well, I just did.  That is if you guys still need more help.

PS: I would like to say thank you to everybody who setup this year's con.  It was my first and it was awesome.  Lots of fun.  Now if only I can manage to fit into the RPG room duriong my wakey hours next year.

I was wondering if there is going to be some contest about the Kumoricon girl up there on the upper-left.  Like, I guess Sakuracon (not sure!  This isn't fact) girl is decided by a competition or summat every year, right?

So . . . will there be something like that for us artists to play around with and design how she'll look next Kumoricon?

That would be so fun!

I have a feeling that's a no.
From what I've heard she is the creation of one of the staffers and she actually has a name. There's also supposedly an inside joke about her as well but you know how staff can be.

She has a name (I forget what it is at the moment), but apparently her appearance will be changing every year... Personally I'd rather have it consistent, but we've already got a new look since last year, so there ya go.

Now... random bias ON...

Personally I think it's simply awesome that we got an artist as great as Tara as early as our first year. The contest idea is nice, but in my humble opinion, it only turns out a picture of real quality about 50% of the time... I'm betting they have a rule about no repeat winners over X amount of time, which has an effect, even with such a huge con base.

My opinion is this: what we need is good badge art, not good mascot art.  The badge art we had this time was alright as art, but to me it hardly resembled anime at all in style. So, personally, I would much prefer to see a badge art contest.

[random bias off]

Perhaps we should start a new topic about this... I would even split this one, but it appears I'm not allowed to moderate this subforum.

I felt  slightly insulted by all of that.  I'm an excellent artist, thank you and I wasn't complaining abut Kumoricon girl as she is.  i was just saying it might be fun to play around with her!  If you wanna see my stuff you can go to http://www.mistresslegato.deviantart.com

i agree with him... and i dont think his remark was in anyway meant as an insult. i like the idea of consistency in the artwork for the webpage. besides why bother being up here... with that badges... if you win such a contest (which sounds like fun) then your work will be walkin around the con with the con-goers, much cooler i think... yeah... so think about all that and i think that we should begin work on a con badge constest... lol...

honestly... did you see the con-girl anywhere at the con besides that big poster?
the badges would be everywhere

Oh, I misunderstood the message there

A contest would be fun and a cool way to get other people involved.  I'm all for the badge contest!  It is a bit difficult to draw so tiny, but PhotoShop can shrink things.  i think it will be fun!

Ought we?

actually i like the idea of having contests for designing things like signs advertising events...basically anything that helps congoers feel and become more involved in the development of the con itself

There may be an update on the mascot status at Sunday's general meeting. Contests for fan involvement seem well supported at the weekly Eugene meetings but since a lot of decisions can't be made until someone can be put in charge of them (in other words, after this general meeting), it's difficult to say what will happen.
I have no clue what 2004's mascot was named. I kept calling her Kumori-chan just 'cause I liked the way it sounded. I should ask the artist though...

Art contest sounds like a great idea, I think it'll help bring in more artists for the year 2005.

i agree. not everyone who is an artist feels comfortable to have a big public display of multiple pieces, nor can afford to purchase merchandising space, but many would have at least a piece or two that they would love to share with congoers, and finding ways to involve them is ideal.

another option, although not affiliated with kumoricon in any official way, is the kosmix zine, which is published by one of my panelists from the fanfic panel. if anyone is interested in that, contact me privately, because it is not a con-affiliated project.

Just about any other week if we worked it out in advance and you took the Cottage Grove bus TO the meeting, I'll be willing to take you home (I live in Springfield, but I'm very close to I-5), but this wouldn't be a good day for me.

If after you get to know us and decide you want to dig in and really help out, I'll make sure you can get in touch with me each Thursday you don't drive to make sure I'll be there (I have some health issues).  I couldn't do it every week, but I'd be willing to do it once a month or so and more often as the con gets nearer.

Also, there are also carpools to the General Meetings once a month in Portland.  As I am going to be attending them again on a regular basis, I'm another body with a car.  (Also, my roommate lets me borrow the...Ta Da!  2004 Prius Hybrid car that gets 50 MPG!  Whoo!  I wish we could afford to replace all of our cars with those!)

This is also a general post for new people that have wanted to be involved.  We KNOW another 500-1000 people would have come to Kumori 2004 if we had the Space and Staff!  This year there is more national publicity, we have a two year success record and Sean (and others) and some really exciting things in the works that will really bring out the Anime Fans!

To be blunt, we need more people to be involved.  The more involved, the shorter the shifts and the more time volunteers get to enjoy the con as well as helping!

If it weren't for  gas issues I would say hell yeah! I'll be there and will dig in. As it is I've been unemployed for over a year and my car is such a gas guzzler that it's currently living in the garage under a tarp, and is why we only use the jeep. Right now I'm hoping he can juggle stuff so he can either drop me off and pick up or I can gave the car, but it doesn't look good.

Is there any forum where the minutes from the meetings are posted? I would love to get up to date and be of some help, or at least be up to speed. :)

I will be in Eugene Sat for sure and at next week's meeting. :)

I meant to go last year and couldn't make it, but I've went and pre-reg'd this year and reserved a hotel room so ** it I'll be there this time. :)  I've never worked an anime/comic convention but I've orginized other types of events before.  What all do you still need help with at this point? What are the current time & place of the thursday meetings in Eugene?
