I just had 6 tabs open viewing this and the forum frontpage every 5 seconds.

So about 36 times a minute

For about an hour.

Would have gotten a lot more done, but lag was lagging.

Well, it hasn't been tested yet...

However the attached file Should probably work.

You'll also need to download http://www.christopherlewis.com/WGet/wget-1.11-beta-1b.zip (http://www.christopherlewis.com/WGet/wget-1.11-beta-1b.zip) and extract it to the same folder as the wget1mil.cmd file (or vice versa).

Well, you should just be able to unzip the linked zipfile someplace, pop the .cmd file in there, and double-click it.  Can you post what the dos window says is happening?  Or does it just run once?

1) Try right clicking the window and there should be a start selection option or something (It's been years, I've no idea what it really is called)
2) I saw a duplicate /dev/null in the first file.  You can try it again with that eliminated (right click the .cmd file, select edit, change the line with /dev/null to say it only once.)
3) Here's another file that may also work...

I've not tried Vista, I wouldn't know.

I remember the XP terminal used to be good (at least on Professional... I'm not sure if XP Home screwed it up intentionally or if it was a service pack), then it got harder to use.

It even has tab-completion in one version...

Here are some better versions...

They're labeled inside with instructions on altering the delay (I picked 4-seconds for a reason).  Just right click, select -edit- and save when done.

There are also now three versions, each of which is the same, except for the page it uses to bounce off of to make the forums detect a topic switch.  That way this thread (the common page in all three) will go up faster then the others.

It's likely less an issue of the bandwidth and more an issue of the database load.  If we had 10 people doing that, it would mean 1000 queries per second, JUST on this page.  I'd have to really hope everything ends up being cached in memory at that point.

Probably an error happened.  I set it up with a failsafe to stop on any error to prevent it from working continuously at doing no downloading.

It had tab completion at least as far back as Windows 2000, but you had to enable it in the registry (more precisely, select the keyboard key to use: obviously, you would want to set this to TAB). Only in Windows XP and after was this enabled by default.

I think the only difference between XP Home and Professional was a lack of many of the useful commands in Home.

Powershell, a free alternate shell based on .NET created by Microsoft for Windows XP and Vista, is even better than the built-in command shells.

You guys might not want to keep the wget running for too long. Keep in mind it loads both the web server and database server, and they are shared between multiple subscribers on our shared server. I checked the statistics recently and Wget is now one of the more popular browsers used to access the Kumoricon site! (I saw two distinct versions.)

I've actually had Internet issues over the last few days as well.

Comcast is my provider, and the issues are not limited to DNS server issues, though technically I'm running my own caching DNS server that queries the ISP/root servers so that should be something I'm insulated from anyway...

However I've been getting more frequent service outages (like they're restarting the network routers on some kind of emergency or at least unplanned basis).  It's one of the higher items on my list to do today, tweaking and rebuilding my firewall rules to make it easier for me to diagnose this...

Well, hyper-loading the site to rack up hits got bad enough so that Jeff noticed...  Rather then risking getting the thread locked, everyone backed off.

Probably, it wouldn't hurt to run a single copy of the batch I provided file per user.  (There are three versions so that the alternate thread changes from run to run...  I could integrate that in to just one longer file that's more foolproof though.)

You probably need to let it finish loading so the database query finishes, and the actual counter triggers.  At least, that's my guess based purely on the description of the behavior.

I took the liberty of doing the math myself, using the numbers that I think you may have used.

I'm making an assumption that you looked at the number of days that have transpired since the very first post.  -->  December 14, 2007 to December 14, 2008 is 366 days, plus 11 to reach today = 377 days.

I guessed that the view number was 831,430, since my latest view was 831,431.  Divide that by the number of days...
     _____________  = 1 day having 2205.385
377|831,430.000

The difference between one million and 831,430 is 168,570.  Divide that by 2205.385.

            ____________  = 76.436 days to reach one million.
2205.385|168,570.000

To January 25 = 31 days
To February 25 = 31 days, total 62
To February 28 = 3 days, total 65
11 days later to a total of 76, March 11
.436 is almost half a day

Today is a paid holiday. I don't know if the university had classes or not. Me, it's double time and a half to be here.

But, the union bargaining committee gave away Veteran's day, so that is just another day here. Makes me feel special, ya know. Being a veteran and all.

Thank goodness today isn't another drinking holiday, like St. Patrick's, Cinco de Mayo ( which I abhor, being of French extraction), or Labor day.

Haha...both of my brothers were THE cutest asian babies evah!!! Too bad they're older than me; I wish I could have held them and dressed them up  :D I can only look at old pics now. My bros are like mid twenties now...haha

My cousin was a fashion model in Japan way back when. 1/2 Okinawan, and 1/2 a lot like me. She is a 3rd cousin, I think. I really don't understand levels of cousin and removes. My dad's first cousin's daughter. They had a tough time of it growing up in Hawaii, at least the boy did. Haole-fied bananas he was called.

It must be something about the settings of these work computers. I can't get them to do that very well. Even though we have about the highest speed of Internet you can get here.

I've looked and I can't find the setting for always refresh a page when you look at it. I think that is what makes it go so much faster for you. I have to look at an old page if I click; Back. I think......

I used to watch that show every day after school. The easy way to tell 60s animation from any other period, is that they really didn't bother much about backgrounds. How many times can you run around the same table and lamp and not ever turn a corner?

I used to get so mad at my cats for killing birds in the front yard.
