Just wanted to see how many people are attending this?...because i'll be there yay!  :D

I'll be there.

I think attendance is usually in the area of 4500 individuals and isn't expected to change. (so, by population:attendance ratio, Portland has Seattle beat now, with a 7,000:1 ratio for Portland metro pop:K-con and 10,000:1 ration for Seattle:S-con)

Waahh?? Sakura-Con had 10500 paid attendees last year, according to their web site. You might be thinking of their time at the Hilton and Marriott in Sea-Tac, when their attendance was capped, before moving to the convention center in 2006.

Ummm... yeeeeaaaahhh...

Sakura-Con hasn't been 4500 since 2005, when it was capped. Sakura-Con's Pre-reg is in the 4500 area now.

May I ask where the concept that SC was 4500 and holding came from?

I doubt I'll go this coming year, mostly for some decisions they've made lately (primarily their decision to axe the Fan Creation Station), and also because it's gotten too big for me.

"We had 7,471 individual member attendees last year"

I don't know, maybe they just need to update their site or something.  I was thinking of the 2005 attendance blah blah.

So, can anyone clarify whether there were 7500 or 10500 people there last year?  And if there were 10500, why they haven't updated some of the official documents and demographics on their site 6 months after the fact?

Ill be there..  All I do is complain about how much SC completely obliterates very CONCEPT of anime fandom with theyre gushtapo-esq staff and family friendly BS..but it IS The only con between now and next summer.

Ill be Renji AGAIN ( Oi I think Im good at Renji so ill do it as long as I like thankya.)
Hopefully Ill be able to fix my bankai Zabimaru by then. What'dya know, it broke! Useless.

Also I should have 'secret cosplay' finished by then. Dont bother playing 'the guessing game' its pretty obscure.

My sister and I might be going! It depends if we can get up there, and if we can get out of school on Friday... I have an easier time since I'm in college, but she's still in high school. e.e; We could always go up later, though. I'm totally stoked though. Not really for the convention, as I kiiiinda prefer Kumoricon, but I get to hang out with some aaaawesome people and do group cosplay! (Persona 3, FF8, and MGS) S'Gonna roooock! >D If the money comes together. X_X;

Best place in the convention center is probably 4th floor outside in the park or first floor in the lobby type area.

I will be there, the staff is kinda crappy at sakuracon indeed thou, hopefully it will be better this year, its gotten so huge and offical that they killed most the fun extras for a better PR look for others. I am worried kumoricon shall become the same way in time since its run by the same people. S con used to be wild with the yuri/yaoi for pizza/pocky booths and funny random events like staged battles or random contests. They even slienced the Yaoi man so he cant yell out his awesome sayings any more.

Of the 11 board members of Sakura-Con and the 8 voting of Kumoricon, none currently overlap and only 2 have overlapped in the past, if I'm not mistaken. One of the those helped found Kumoricon and the other of them has stated publicly that he will abstain from policy votes as a Kumoricon board member for quite some time. Although there are several overlapping staff members, the organizations are completely separate.

Its true, I may know some of Sakuracon staff from Kumoricon, but I feel that the 2 will never be more than 10% integrated. so individuality will always exist.

I'll be attending for the sixth year...with group cosplays, finally! Already have my room arrangements made, now I just need to save up the cash and pre-reg. And finish my cosplays over the winter so I'm not working on them at the con (again). Doing Lum from Urusei Yatsura, Rin from Mermaid Forest, Akane and another character from Ranma 1/2, Miroku from Inuyasha...and something not Takahashi. Maybe Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke.

Eh, a lot of my friends staff Sakura Con. I'm not going to be negative towards them, since I know they're stressed out enough. It's gotta be tough running a con when it gets to that size, especially when you start getting parents attending with their kids who know nothing about anime or the convention atmosphere. And those parents tend to be the most vocal complainers. Which means trouble for the con. It sucks for the longtime attendees, that they've got to be accomodating towards the ignorant.

But it shouldn't be that way. Ratings are there for a reason--things shouldn't be dumbed down for people who refuse to learn better.

Please don't talk about Staff that way, they are actually a really nice group of people. But there are laws that they need to follow and like the saying goes one bad apple spoils the bunch. There are lots of people at SakuraCon who aren't "anime savey" like the parents seriously think back to your First con, don't you remember how it felt like you were treading water for your life. Think about the laypeople who don't even know what anime is at these cons and cut them some slack. And if you still feel that way about the Con Staff, I envite you to come to a general meeting, the next one is Nov 18, at 1pm in the WSCC room 210.

As a member of Kumoricon staff I can tell you first hand that I as a person don't care about the debauchery. But unfortunately it is my sworn duty to up hold the laws of the con. the only reason they are in place is to protect both con-goers and the con itself from any sort of legal issues. To be honest I could see the time and place for everything that everyone wants to do. But unfortunately everyones views on situations are different. This is why the laws exist and are enforced. Sorry if I sound snobby. I mean no offense.

But outside of Kumoricon, I myself am a con-goer and will be fully ready to enjoy sakuracon to its fullest. Hope to see you all there!

I Know its just a few, but unfortunatly they seem to be the ones holding the cards. I also find them not be horirbly unprofesional.

Heres a list of some of the things a few of the staff on the forum have said " I dont care if you dont liek it, this is con for about the staff, not you."
" I HATE people like you your going to single handedly destroy the con I hope you never go to the con again" ) When I answered soemone question that yest here is an 'adult panel after midnight which theyre WAS yet its thread mysteriously dissapeared after the affore mentioned.
Then theres teh ever popular " IOf you domt like it dont go." This I have a REAL problem with. WHY are they telling teh hardcore fans o leave, instead of the soccer moms who dont liek anime in the first place?

Aaanyway, please forgive the rant, I dont mean any disrespect as your pretty polite about it I just REALLY dont think that additude is acceptable for people in charge. Maybe we need some blood.

Thanks for the invite, but..if I went to the meeting and people found out who I was, theyd eat me alive.

Also think about the amount of time that the staff puts into prep for the con, by the time the con actually happens I'd be willing to bet that they are sick and tired of all the wining and other stuff that hits the fan that they're pretty much at the end of their ropes. SakuraCon is a "family friendly" con so they're advertising to the kids who need parental supervision thus needing parents are there as well, and there will always be people who complain. And the con has to address these issues, "Pleasing everyone and no one." Yes I think some changes are stupid, and most of my friends refuse to go to SakuraCon, but I still go 'cause SakuraCon offers somethings you can't get at smaller cons. Like the sheer volume of cosplayers that don't go to say Kumoricon, and some of the programing.

I don't think blood would help, it might make things even worse.

You should give the Con Staff some slack and the benefit of the doubt, think about the amount of work that they put into putting on this con for you.

PS If you could post a link for the "I dont care if you dont liek it, this is con for about the staff, not you." comment I'd like to know some of the context.

There's a difference between "family friendly" and "overly sanitized". Batman: The Animated Series is family friendly. Disney going back and deleting smoking from their old movies is overly sanitized.

I might actually be able to make it, since I recently relocated from the Oregon coast to Silverlake, WA.

If I do, it'd be my first Con appearance since Sakuracon 05. (Man, it's been a LONG time).

But, thats only if some of my other friends go. If not, I'll just bored and wind up staying in my room reading manga or playing games, and I can do that at home, to be perfectly honest. >_>

Well, I'd better be there- I'm the Ops. Office Manager and the Masquerade Ball Coordinator for Sakura Con. If not, I'll send my stand-in to do the work ^_^.

And on the note of rude staff members at S-Con, yes we do pour alot of hardwork and time into putting on a great show for all of our attendees. I'm sorry if some of the staffers have ever been rude or mean, but I've also met some rude staffers at Kumori Con. I've even met some less-than-helpful Enforcers at PAX, so rude staffers are not exclusive to just Sakura Con- they're present at every con. You cannot judge the performance/attitude of the con staff on just a few select instances or members.

Nyar,But the sakuracon 07 kinda dissapointed me abit.It was my first con at the time, And i thought it woul dbe great also because it was their 10th anniversary.

But it was really unorganized from my point of veiw. They had changed the schedual for a few things a bunch. And other then the concerts  and the exhibitioners hall,There really wasn't too much going on to choose from in my opinion.I never even saw panels for anything.

A few of the staff was kinda rude to me too.I accidentally ran into one of them in a large crowd,And he glared at me.o_o;

I am going for 08 though. :3 I hope its more organized and less constant schedual changes.>.> Of course i realize i am only stating the bad opinions.Other then all that though,It was great and i can't wait to go again. ^o^

for the last couple of years, sakura con has been going thru some growing pains.  I suspect that their staff hasn't quite yet grown enough to handle much larger crowds of people(compared to sea tac) so many of them are being overworked.  at least, thats what I think is going on.

It's very difficult to keep something so big organized. And there are a lot of behind the scenes things they're trying to organize as well, such as artist events. I know just ONE of my interviews changed rooms 4 times, and I actually got taken to the wrong place for my second artist interview...they were downstairs in the atrium, and I was taken to a conference room. But I'm sure they'll get it all under control and be better organized soon :)

Mm, I'm gonna try to be at Sakuracon for 2008. But that's only if my friend can get the tickets and take me with her. None of my other friends are going besides Cat, and my mom doesn't want to spend a whole three days at a convention center with a bunch of 'cosplaying weirdos and cross dressers' as she puts it.^.^;; Even though I'm one of those cosplaying weirdos. Anywho~ So there's a 50/50 chance that I'll go, and I know I'll be dressed for it, at least. (I wanna get a Komugi outfit for it. <3) Anywho, if I show up, I hope to see people from Kumoricon there!

But it was really unorganized from my point of veiw. They had changed the schedual for a few things a bunch. And other then the concerts  and the exhibitioners hall,There really wasn't too much going on to choose from in my opinion.I never even saw panels for anything.

A few of the staff was kinda rude to me too.I accidentally ran into one of them in a large crowd,And he glared at me.o_o;

I am going for 08 though. :3 I hope its more organized and less constant schedual changes.>.> Of course i realize i am only stating the bad opinions.Other then all that though,It was great and i can't wait to go again. ^o^

i know you *poke*

EVERYONE THIS IS MY SEXYNOJUTSU GAARA :P

I plan to go to s-con as long as I can get my train ticket and such. (6 hour train ride with tons of COSPLAY STUFF, yaaaay...). It's my first s-con, and I'm excited/nervous. I love conventions but going to one the size of s-con scares me. ^^;; I've attended k-con for the past four years so anything bigger... aaaah, makes me nervous. X_X

I however hope to have an awesome time! ... And cling to my cosplay buddehs for fear of getting lost in the crowds! XD;

Waa, cut my last post. XP Looks like I'm not gonna be able to go to Sakuracon. The friend that I was planning to go with coulden't get tickets, and even though my mum said she could pay for a ticket, I'd still need a friend to go with, and none of my others are going or are able to take me along. ._. Alas, the depressing part about living three to four hours away from where a convention is, -.-

I'm sorry but it's a door thing, which is a pain having to wait in line for your pre-reg badge for up to several hours, or getting up early and getting to the convention early so you won't have to wait in line so long, but than the convention isn't open and nothing to do but to wonder around in downtown Seattle or hang out in the hotel room.

Doesn't sound that bad to me. ;P

My technique is to not get to the con until around 3pm the first day. :D

Hey everyone, I'm not trying to hijack this thread but I don't want to start a new one.

Any of you willing to help Pocky club make some deliveries at Sak this year? Two of our best delivery personnel, superjaz and Mr_Mustash, will be coordinating Pocky Club activities at Sakuracon 2008. I hope that you will all take some time to get in touch with them and help Pocky Club branch out to other conventions. Even if you just help us with one delivery you'll be doing us a big favor. It won't just be helping Pocky Club, but it will also be helping support Kumoricon.

At the very least, I'd be grateful if you could help make sure that people know that we'll be there and making deliveries. I'm sure there'll be lots of people up there who have never even heard of Pocky Club!

Thanks guys!
I'll try and be there myself next year!

I still haven't even pre-registered. :/

And I've been throwing money out the window and owe a ton.

I need to make some money and rebuild my budget.  I completely didn't notice that I've run both my accounts down to about $20 and only have minimal cash until tonight, after spending about $30 partying. :/

I meant to keep no less than $100 in my WaMu account for Sakuracon.

I need to get a job. :/

Maybe I'll offer to do some money-making tasks for the family people.

Or sell something.  I'm sure I have stuff I could sell. :P

Alright, I know this is a bit late, but seeing as my Pocky Club Newsletter just showed up in my inbox (my dad decided to put his name down instead of mine, but used my e-mail)... I'm answering Tom's call for Pocky deliverers. I'll try and stop by once in a while. It really depends on the willingness of the friends I'm going with.
I'm going as Cure White (PrettyCure MaxHeart), and Sugar (Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar).. Though my costumes need a LOT of work. (as in I've been searching for decent pictures for so long that I haven't actually started the costumes yet :-[)

It's a very nice place, but FYI, they really don't want people bringing swords in there.  Some guys I was with last year (Bleach cosplayers) had to haggle to let them stash their swords in the umbrella stand.  My advice, go as a magical girl - wands and staffs are just fine!

NeonFox: You can't bring a "weapon" into a pub, even if it's a prop.  A magical girl staff isn't a weapon. Lots of people will be cosplaying, so I'm advising them to leave their swords somewhere else, like with the concierge at their hotel.

Just a couple weekends ago there was a photo shoot downtown. I walked there with my wooden sword and aside frombiazzarre looks no one cared. Its Seattle.

However, if were talking about bars well, its Seattle and the truth is there are a few drunks and crazies late at night. Its possible one of them may try and start something over a fake weapon, unlikely, but possible.

I think it's a general McMennamins thing that they don't want people bringing sharp pointy things into their place of business.  I probably wouldn't either.

Round trip Train through Amtrak from PDX to SEA: $59.00
Round trip Greyhound Bus from PDX to SEA: $28.50
Road distance from Portland to Seattle via I-5: ~80 (calculate for urban driving and it comes out to about 100 to 110 miles and about 3 hours from most parts of Portland.)

RANDOM FACT I JUST THOUGHT OF! - It's against the law in Seattle to have an aquarium filled with water with you while riding a bus!  The reason is because the sloshing around of the water will annoy other people!

They forgot to list the 'Samurai Noodle" ramen shop which is in the same building as Owajimaya. Damned good ramen, good prices but VERY busy. I advise that you not even attempt to get in at lunch/ dinner time. Theyre open late though, so any time after 7 pm should be okay.

I just need to know which hotel you are going to, how much for gas money(or for train or airplane) and money for staying in the hotel per night(because I didn't pre-register in time and I unfortunately don't have a credit card), where to meet you at, which character you're going to cosplay as, (I'll be cosplaying as L Lawliet from Death-Note) etc

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag with me?

A picture of who you look like would work so that when I meet you, I don't waste my time looking for somebody.....

Also, drop me an email at: aphonthany@yahoo.com, please let me know if anything changes within the next few days. I'll also let you know if I can go if it's okay with my mom.

That was decidedly mediocre. Kind of takes the fun out of things when you have no money to spend in the dealers room, and have seen all of the shows already this year. The AMV contest had WAY too many Advent Children and Naruto AMVs, mostly set to music of the angsty, nobody-loves-me, just-let-me-die, I'm-going-to-die-alone variety, though there were a few shinning exceptions that I really enjoyed. They showed AMV Hell 4 in main events late Saturday night, which was great.

As always, it lacks the warmth of K-con.

The problem with Sak is that it is more focused on industry events instead of Pannels. Kumoricon has a LOT more pannels Sak, so for me I like it better at Kcon!

I noticed that.

To be honest overall I felt bored most of the time and did not have a good time at the con, didn't even make any friends either.  Sad ;-;

Me too! This was my first Sakuracon and I expected it to be amazing since it's so big, but I was wrong. Even though there are tons more people, I felt like S-con was actually lonelier than K-Con. Not to mention that even though the location was BIG, I preferred last year's K-Con hotel over the convention center! I guess this proves to me that all cons are different, and that I really do enjoy K-Con's atmosphere quite a bit.

But Sak was still a blast! I got to see a bunch of my con-friends, meet new people, and DANCE! WOOOOO!
Too much industry-whoring, not enough interesting, off-kilter fan stuff. It really lacks that slightly crazy feeling that K-con thrives on. Before I became a K-con regular, I used to think that Sak was better. Now I know better.

It's all a matter of taste.

Some people like the concerts. Some people like the big guest appearances and autograph signings. Some people like the big name artists in the artist alley and their original sketches (selling for over $3000 in the auction). Some people like a bigger variety of pictures to take and getting their's taken more. Some people like the huge screens, with 5 in just one room, to watch AMVs or movies. Some people like the huge exhibitor's hall and stuff they haven't seen before. Some people like the con being open 24 hours. Some people like the con having like 10 places to eat without leaving. Some people just like the bigger cons.

Of course, since this is a Kumoricon forum, you're going to hear everyone say they like Kcon better (including myself.) If you went to a Sak forum, you might hear complaints from Sak fans about Kcon.
It's just a matter of what you like. Basically it's either more interesting panels and closer friends, or bigger events and popular guests that don't come too often.

I just got back from Sakuracon.

Well k-con07 was my first anime con, sak08 was my second.

I have to admit that I totally loved sak running 24 hours. But sak was way more "family friendly" and a bit to big businessy.  The panels weren't nearly as interesting or as well put together as k-cons were (with the exception of the mech group's). I LOVE the Seattle Convention Center (I used to work there) but I felt it was not used as well as it could have been and navigation was difficult. (For instance why were the anime theaters split up on two floors? Where did the manga library hide at?) That said the exhibitor's hall was VERY IMPRESSIVE.  Also I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the rave and the concerts were pretty awesome.

K-con was easier to navigate (and not just because it was smaller). I absolutely loved the "anime that scarred me for life" panel. There was a good deal more people who seemed to be friendlier. Not that the people at sak weren't friendly but since the con was bigger it drew a crowd that wasn't just anime fans. k-con's staff seemed more organized (although s-con got me registered at the door on opening day in less than 30 min which was something that k-con couldn't claim last year... Austin was in line for over an 1 an hour 40).

I liked both cons. I wouldn't say I favor either one over the other... Its just that k-con was better with friends and sak was better with lots of cash. I plan on attending both in the future again.

Kumoricon is fun because it reminds me of Sakuracon back in 2000. It was more of an oversized anime club which made everyone feel more at ease. Everyone was there to have fun, there weren't cosplay cliques nor "my anime > your anime". Waiting around in lines was short lived, and talking to the person next to you wasn't seen as creepy. :(

Now Sakurcon is epic, 12k+ attendees and lots of fragmentation of the fan base. It was still plenty of fun, even if my ears were bleeding from the tinny highs of the concerts' poor mixing job. Oddly, the highlight of my SC adventure was hosting a panel.

Kumoricon is fun for me because it's smaller and feels very much like the Sakura-cons of old.

The one thing that I did like about Sakuracon that they didn't have at Kumoricon last year was food within the building. Last year Kumoricon was my first con and all they had to eat in that area was the coffee shop. Plus Sakuracon had a lot more people to look at and take pictures of, thats my favorite part.

I do like Kumoricon better because it is a bigger chance for me to see people from my high school that I haven't seen in a while, like I did last year ^_^. Tigard representing w00t!
