at kumoricon 2005, watch for fanfiction theater! we will be getting together and cosplaying our own fanfics!
-
More entertainment = GOOD..
Has something like this been done before in other cons, or is Kumori the first to start it off?
-
not to my knowledge; nor has fanfic bedtime stories nor our beta station had a precedent elsewhere, to my knowledge.
one of our staff was last year's operations coordinator for sakuracon, and will be sakuracon's con chair for 2005. he was impressed, and is putting me in touch with his live programming coordinator, as they, apparently, only hold a contest, and have no other fanfic programming. and they're a 4 to 5 thousand person event.
so, hi everyone! prepare to be recruited! :)
-
Mmmmm...now I want to do Final Gift. I already have the outfit for it (y'all saw me in that purple trenchcoat, right?), and it would work great as a monologue.
-
You guys are awesome! But don't let Sakuracon steal our special event! (Just kidding, Sakura con are cool people)
As a shout out to the rest of you, look at the success of our wonder fanfic staff. If you have something fan related you want to do, from art to sculpture to acting to singing or WHATEVER, just go for it. Find some friends, post often, run a panel or event about it here at the con, and we will do our best to support you.
People like RemSevarem and Blackjack could be creating a bit of a revolution in Anime Convention thinking, and so can you!
The key is lots of hard work and persitence.
-
awww,
I let Sakura take the Sailor Moon Slumber Party from Kumori 2003 and they loved it.
Save the great first year stuff for us (unless you are staff at both places) and THEN share it. :)
(I'm now staff at both, Go Sakura! We think of them as our wonderful Big Sister con!)
-
can't i be jealous of my big sister though?
-

Me? What did I do that was so revolutionary?
Seriously, I want to know.
*blush*
-
well, I heard that you and RemSaverem and maybe a couple others were very instrumental in making all the fanfic happen, so yeah, that's going to end up being a fan fic revolution here in the northwest, and maybe throughout America.
No letting it go to your head though, you guys are going to have to build up the community even more for next year! :-)
-
Viva la revolution!
Truly, I am so glad to have been a part of this, and I hope to remain one. Fanfiction programming getting shoved to the back burner at cons (or just not existing) has been a big pet peeve of mine for a long time, and Kumori is a breath of fresh air! And I love Rem's idea for expanding the bedtime stories by creating the fanfic theatre. I just hope it doesn't phase out my baby completely...she was just starting to walk!
Regarding the theatre, by the way, I need to find a really good actor who's also a local otaku and a decent Sasuke cosplayer...at least, that's my ideal. I have an idea for a skit that would be (OMG!!1) serious, and therefore would require passable acting...

What? Maybe? Maybe?
-Hope
-
maybe as in, I can't remember any names because the con is a huge blur to me :-)

*turns into a big toothy clamp and bites wrist*
-
Yeah, dude. Ndarkerl (Hope), y'know, MADE the zine and all that. She was a really key part of everything.

Check out the Beaverton/Or thread in the General Section....Uwajimaya's is having a japanese festival on the 18th and 19th, and it looks like a few (maybe more, the thread just went up) local people are planning on cosplaying there.....You might find a passable Sasuke cosplayer!

Yeah, isn't my idea great? :D I dunno whether I'll have the guts to actually do it or not though.

I'm interested in doing a skit with someone(or a group), however, I likely not be someone you want. I do have some acting experience but its a bit limited(just some drama classes and a short play in high school). And besides the lack of Sasuke costume, I wouldn't know how well I could act like Sasuke. As it is, I'm planning to finish my Haku costume, do Neji, Pink Kimono Haku(for a solo skit I came up with if I don't get a group), and then yarichuu likes to the demon brothers with me.

peter, thanks for all the praise. for those who don't know him, peter is great and sweet and supportive, and was this year's programming chair and last year's con chair overall!
BJ, Hope, AJ: yes, we really are doing something revolutionary. to the point that our guest professor, toni levi, is wanting us to write articles about it for our book. promulgating fanfic from the backburner to front and center in the con universe is a real passion for us, and *we are attaining that passion!* :P
and no worries, filkaeris. i figured fanfic bedtime stories would be one night (say, saturday) and then fanfic theater, the next: thus permitting one to segue into the other. like: you liked the fic i read? well get together with me and let's prepare to act it out!
now if only we can figure out where to put hope's MyST event.......yeah, we *better* stay on labor day weekend: fanfic alone is going to have enough entertainment to fill 3 evenings!
:)
love,
rem.
ps for those of you who don't know: john, last year's ops chair and this year's con chair for sakuracon, is giving my contact info to chris norman, head of programming for sakuracon, to see if whomever he has working on fanfic would like some assistance. i plan to keep kumoricon's innovations sacred to us; but if sakuracon were to copy anything from us and advertise its origins as us, that would only render us even more notorious as the vanguard in fanfic programming.
i am so proud of all of us! thanks especially to my steering committee: blackjack gabbiani, filk aeris, and hope nickel. and to additional panelist ket matsura.
and to peter and the rest of alto nimbus for being so supportive of our redefinition of fanfic programming!
love!
rem. :P

And all those other bigwigs from other cons said fanfic wasn't a big part of the anime con experiance. Total kudos to you guys! I just wish I could have been involved but was so totaly tired by then that I just went to bed... oh well, there's always next year!
Nyco
-
I didn't go to the bedtimes stories as I kinda dragged else where by a friend I made at the con ^_^*. Otherwise, I would of gone as fanfic reading is one of the things I'm always doing with my free time....now if I just find more good fics to read....X_X. Either way, its something I like to see again.....so I can actually attend it next time ^_^*.
PS: Rem, how did that han bok go btw?
-
*inflates with pride and walks around with a balloon stuck on her neck*
That makes me giggle.

Makura.
-
egads! duly noted: thanks!
meantime: yeah, we're proving the other cons wrong :)
i never got to wear the Han-Bok, due to the fact that it was in my suitcase, in my back seat--buried under the bumper to my dad's car, which came off in my on my way to the con!
but come with me to sakuracon and you can see it in its full glory....when i'm not handing out roses as tuxedo kamen, that is! :)
-
Okay, lets try to meet up at sakura con then. I like to take a picture of someone in a han bok. You can find my AIM s/n in my profile.
-
actually, i'm hoping a slew of fanfic aficionados (try saying that 3 times fast!!!) will collaboratively invade sakuracon and prove there is interest in fanfic programming! :)
now if we could only agree about in which fandom to cosplay our little takeover of their programming :)
-
I'd love to help someone doing a fic in either the Digimon, Slayers, Yu-Gi-Oh, or otherverses, but those are the three I'm well-versed in. I've read/seen a lot of Hikaru no Go, Pokemon, Naruto, One Piece, YuYu Hakusho and Shaman King, but I'm not as far as people who've watched the fansubs and everything are...
I have pretty good acting skills, but I'm better at pulling off comedy than serious acting. I'd be willing to try at either, though.
I'd write a skit of my own but I'm bad at that kind of thing.
-
Acting out fanfics sounds somewhat interesting to me. As I mentioned before, I have some limited acting experenice in high school and another time, someone commented I would make a good director O_o. However, Naruto costumes are my main focus right now. I don't mind if its a serious or a comedy fic.
-
digimon, slayers, pokemon, and naruto are all well represented amongst the 42 submissions for this year's con. pokemon, digimon and shaman king are all well represented amongst the 8 or so submissions from last year's con. (notice the quintupling of entries?--pardon the neologism if that is one :) )
so we are well on our way! :)
-
Rem, I know this likely going to be very early to ask, but how do you think the fanfic theater will be held? Will it be something that will be reheared(sp?) before the con like a play?
-
i would imagine that some of the skits would be rehearsed ahead of time, and some would be impromptu, improvised on the spot. for example, if the previous night's fanfic bedtime stories event had inspired someone to approach and ask if they could act out the fic :)
-
I wonder...if there was a fanfic cosplay officially...would people be allowed to act out the shounen ai/yaoi fics? Or would they say no way?
-
shonen/shoujo should be fine at any time.
yuri/yaoi/hentai should be doable, but only during the after hours, adults only programming time.
at this year's bedtime stories, we had sort of mapped it out that during the last hour or two, adult-themed material would be permissible, so long as the reader provided advance notice, so that if anyone would find it offensive, they would have the chance to leave ahead of time.
in my opinion--which should not be mistaken for con policy; there will have to be staff discussion on this--i'd like to see things function like at a movie theater. there might be some things that would have an R rating, which would mean that folks over 17 would be ok, but under 17 would need to be accompanied by their adult guardian to be allowed to participate.
it might be that we have to go with 18 and up. i'm not sure. i'm sure someone on staff will look into the legalities of things.
-
What would be the time limits? If they act out some fanfics, it could last hours. Cause the main difference I see is that you would be giving more stage time(to act out the whole fic). And since they have more stage time, a people have easier time doing non comedy stories(more time to get characters developed).
-
hm, good question. well, what we did this year with bedtime stories, was that if someone's fic was novella length (i.e. with chapter installments), we would have them read one installment, then go through other names on the list, then get back to the novella. it could potentially work with fanfic theatre, like: tune in next time for more of (title)!
-
That's great! I would be willing to cosplay the fanfics (it sounds really cool), but I don't think I'd be ready with one by the con, and I'm not really ready to dust off my old ones. I've been too busy with other things to actually sit down and write much fanfic for a few years......mou....
-
I could cosplay some of my stories, if I found the right people. Anyone willing to be Sailor Star Healer and Sailor Star Fighter for me? ^_^ :D :D :D :D
-
fabulous, both of you.
actually, i'm hoping to crossplay tuxedo masks for a fic :)
meantime, one of my goals with this concept is to help cosplayers and fanfic writers hook up and expand their creativity together; and to recognize how many folks have aspirations towards both or involvement in both. i'm so grateful for every time i see this working:)
-
@the_wind_the_sea:
If I finish my other costumes in time, I'll try to make a Star Healer costume.....But....it might not work out. If you want to know why...see my list of planned cosplay for next year in the other thread.... 8O I am soo working myself too hard. I'm not even finished with Songstress Yuna yet, and my Jacket for Duo died on me this weekend...Oh, well, more sewing...but sewing's fun, so it's okay!
Ladida......................................................
-
i asked at the staff meeting last night and we just have to figure out how late we are running activities after we find out who will be insuring us,then we will decide when/how to hold after hours adults only programming :)
-
@hikaru_maxwell
YAY!!!! ^_^ Then all I'd have to find is a Star Fighter. WOOT! ^_^ Oh, I was the one that e-mailed you on the obsessedwithanime boards.
-
I like to be part of it if possible, even being able to watch would be great!
-
@the_wind_the_sea:
Cool! Yeah, I got your message. I'm looking forward to next year.
@everyone:
If anyone wants me to be in their fanfics, here's a list of the cosplay I'm planning to have finished by next year:
Duo Maxwell (Endless Waltz only. I'm sure there'll be enough of the series)
Saior Venus (For Cosplay contest, don't ask unless you want to be in it....)
Sailor Star Healer (for Michi ^_^)
Songstress Yuna (for Karaoke, should be done by halloween.)
Summoner Yuna (because I can)
Oh, and possibly a Naruto character, though it might end up being a fan-made character....because I don't really feel like dressing as one of the others....(If I did a male, it would probably be Ikeda-sensei, and a female....anyone but Sakura....the pink hair gives me flashbacks of Chibi-usa)
Honda Tohru (for the Furuba gang, for Sakura-con)
Ten-Ten (a wandering monster on the way to Gregminster in Suikoden 2, because of the obscurity factor. Still looking for a Rin-Rin and Ran-Ran)
Dark Misato (the dark version of evangelion Misato, because I don't feel like dying the leather jacket my best gave me red.)
-
fabulous detail, hikaru. i would love to meet you. will you be at the general meeting?
-
Possibly. When and where? I live in troutdale, and I'm restricted to Public Transit routes. (plus, I have to be at Gresham transit center by 9:00pm on any night if I want to get home on time....;_;)
-
sorry, i have no idea where troutdale is
the general meeting is this coming sunday, october tenth, from 1:15pm to 4pm, at the downtown branch of the portland public library. i'm quite sure it would be on at least one public transit line, but sadly i do not know which. i think the specific room is the us bank room?
-
I believe there is a stop right in front of the library or at least one nearby as I remember a stop named library. I thinking of coming on by as well. If you want, I can bring my copy of the Legend of Chun Hyang, Rem. While I'm at it, maybe I can find a picture or something of the old han bok I had.
-
Hrmm...I can make it. The downtown library is close enough to the bus lines. All I have to do is catch the Max to Galleria and 10th (coming from gresham), and walk a block away from the direction of Powells (towards the Library/10th station. See you there!
