Title: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: Jamiche on July 23, 2007, 01:11:50 pm
Due to popular request ( ;)), we are trying a new event at the convention this year - Cosplay Chess.

We will be looking for 32 chess pieces, and 2 chess masters for the event, as well as alternates.  You do not have to know how to play chess if you are chess piece, all moves will be coordinated by the chess masters.

As this is Cosplay Chess, your character cosplay will be the deciding factor in who gets to participate.  This is not a first-come, first-serve sign-up -we will be looking for complete cosplays, with a preference for well-known characters.  This is a separate event from the Cosplay Contest, you will not be judged on the quality of the cosplay, or if you made it yourself - you just need to be a recognizable character.

To sign-up to be a chess piece, you need to do the following:
If you are interested in being a chess master, or want to help out in another way, please let us know by posting here, or via e-mail or PM.

Sign-ups will be open until August 25th, or until all the spots are full.  Players will be notified of their team and position the week before con, and will be required to attend a meeting before the event.

If you have any questions, please post here or PM me.

This Evil is up for it. I've already sent in a forum for it.
I missed my chance to be in the cosplay chess at Animazement so I'm excited about getting another chance.

To think I came here with the intend of waking this thread up.

Oi, this form was easy until it asked; angsty/happy. We need a 'bipolar' or 'spaz' option. >_>

Eh, what fi you have other characters with you and therefore a high probabality of special attacks the likes of which we just havent thought of in great detail?  Im a pretty spontainious person after all.

Hi!

I sent in a form, but I'd like to know what day and time at the con this is scheduled for, as I didn't see it on the schedule and I'm staff so I have to make sure I can be available. Thanks!

This isn't official (yet), but its looking like Cosplay Chess will be Monday at 11am, with a mandatory pre-meet at 10am to discuss how things wil go (if you are staff, and can't make the pre-meet, let me know and we can work something out).

So far, we have received 6 registrations... we need 32  :)  So keep those reg forms coming in.

Ah, I can try and get a few more of my friends to sign up, but then youd have to change the name to ''Bleach chess"
While it may be fun, I dont want to bleach-spam the hell out of an entire event.

Look at it this was, of all 32 pieces in a chess set, 16 are all the same (except for color).

Staff is allowed to particitpate, you just need to make sure it doesn't interfere with your staff duties.  If you are going to be at the general meeting/mini-con this weekend, come talk to me and we will see what we can work out. :)

Kissarmy:  I got your pics, but not your form.  Can you please try again?

As of right now, we have 13 registrations - we need 32.  So please, keep those forms coming in :)

Cosplay Chess will be held Monday, at 11am (with a mandatory pre-meet at 10am.)  It's on the last day of the con, so there's usually only a few other panels going on at the same time.  We hope to have the schedule up soon.

Save the blank .pdf to your desktop, then re-open it through that file. Fill out the form, and save it again. It won't save the filled in form, but it will tell you that it is saving the information on the form. Attach that file (it will look like a text file with an earth at top) to an e-mail and send it in. Fillable .pdf's can be pretty weird, but this should help.

ok. so saved blank doc.    Re-opened it.   Filled it out.   went to save a copy again. said

"Data typed into this form will not be saved. Adobe reader can only save a blank copy of this form."

The form doesn't allow you to save the information.  If you fill out the form, then hit the e-mail button, it sends all info in an .xml file... it just doesn't save a copy of the filled out form.

You can try the form again (don't worry about saving it), or you can just send me the info the form is asking for if it's just not working for you.

Hmm. It might be smart to have a list of characters that are already taken, so people don't send in a cosplay that's a double of one previously sent...although there's the flip-side to that, where there won't be a "surprise effect" if people know who will be the pieces...

Just a thought.
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: Jamiche on August 14, 2007, 09:24:33 am
So far, there has only been one duplicate, and I may allow it because it's a variation of the costume (and I need the people  ;D).  If we start getting too many duplicates, I may post that we will not be accepting certain characters, or I may not... as the rules state, this is not a first-come, first-serve sign-up, the best cosplay will be the piece chosen.

That said, I don't want to run people off, or start an arguement - right now, we have about 14 of the 32 pieces we need, so I'm not turning anyone away.  If you have multiple cosplays you would be willing to do, please, by all means submit more than one for consideration.

I would say that a merchant of any kind is much like a Rook or a Bishop. However, it is all up to Jamiche to decide.

(Rook is generaly represented as a castle, i.e. a store place for weapons. Bishops are generally helpful and rich, i.e. a merchant)

Best thing is to talk to the manager in charge of wherever you are staffing. That sort of stuff is usually not decided on until Friday before the con (at least for the yojimbo), but not sure how it works for whatever you're working. You can also talk to the manager to request to not work during the time this is going on so you can attend either way.

The schedule will hopefully be posted on the website soon.  Ed, you're staff for gaming, right?  Talk to Mark, and let him know you want to participate in this event... if you give him enough notice, there should be no problem with you being available (that, or tell him I need you for an event, technically gaming is under me  ;))

As of this morning, we have 18 registrations (and one one the way), so we are more than halfway there  ;D  So please, keep those forms coming in.

We are accepting all registrations (I need people  ;D).  As the rules state, this is not a first-come, first-serve sign-up, we are looking for the best cosplay... but that's not to say we won't use duplicate characters.

There isn't a running list of who has registered (mostly because I haven't compiled it yet).  As of right now, there hasn't been a Sailor Moon, and the only Ed we have is from Full Metal Alchemist.  If you are interested in playing a certain character, and are concerned that someone else has already registered, PM me and I will try to let you know.

If you don't have you badge yet, don't worry about it.. we can fill that info in at the convention.

Sorry Rose, you don't get to pick your piece... I won't know who is playing what piece until I see all the reg forms and figure how the teams will fall out. (But I will try to make sure you're not a King  :P)

she wants to know if she can apply as Belldandy (ah my goddess) and send you the pic later.

we are both really lookin forward to playin cosplay chess! :D

If you don't have a pic of you in your cosplay, you can send an image of the character you are cosplaying... it's a reference for us.  Just keep in mind that you're cosplay will need to be complete by the event.

If you can, send a pic of her in cosplay as soon as you can.. but until then, an image will be fine :)

:3 I think we should draw piece from a hat or something. That way it would be totally random.

:D YAY! NOT THE KING!
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: Dark_Magician_Girl16 on August 15, 2007, 10:39:23 pm
i agree with Rose. that would be fun to draw out of a hat!
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: AzuKyo on August 15, 2007, 10:59:03 pm
Just for fun, I'll form a counter argument (I'm pretty nuetral on the selection of pieces):

If we draw out of a hat, it could result in a major time drain. Each person would have to come up to the hat, pull a piece name, either complain or cheer for what they got and this would all take some time for each of the 32 players.

Then you have people who would complain if they got something like a Pawn or a King (which, in reality, are two of the better pieces to be). This would result in more time lose, and possibly the lose of a player.

The counter argument's way of doing it would be to assign players to pieces with disregard to much less than character. No complaints would be heard and time would be conserved from the Chess masters to duke it out.
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: Dark_Magician_Girl16 on August 15, 2007, 11:15:45 pm
That is true but it would still be fun to draw out of a ht. you caould make a rule before doing so. like. you are what you get. no complaining.
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: Dark_Magician_Girl16 on August 16, 2007, 01:21:42 am
Sorry i misspelled alot in that last post  :D :P
and i had ta add something to ;D
about the whole time drain thing. What you would do is form a line or circle (a circle would be quicker it always was in school), have people draw (and not look at what they got till everyone was done drawing) and then once everyone was done allow people to look and then say no complaining you are what ya got. most people wont complain to where we would run out of time. But then what you would do is make a list where you already have players assigned to peices,  that way if we did run out of time to do the hat idea we have a list already made.

Plus, if people are gonna argue or complain about what they are from a game of chance (the hat) then if u assign them parts they would complain there as well. (sorry if i missunderstood your idea of the assigning players thing)

 ;Djust stating my opinon :D

Cant wait to see everyone at Kumori-Con! :P
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: RoseMustang on August 16, 2007, 04:26:04 pm
Hmmm, you put up a good counter argument, but again the other side fights back.

It's true, that it would be time consuming but wouldn't we draw during the early meeting so it won't be that bad?
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: ThiefKingsHier on August 17, 2007, 04:55:36 pm

The best aspect of the game is the characters.  When its random you lose that entirely. ( in which case,  making it 'first come first serve; isnt that great either)

AT sakura con, I (Renji) Ended up being sacrificed to save the king ( Great, a perfectly Renji thing to do) ..who was Gluttony  from FMA. .(  No. Never. EVER.) ) In that case we may as well just wear normal clothes.

Doing it based off of what suits the characters is the best way to go.
Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: AzuKyo on August 17, 2007, 05:27:10 pm
I don't think they were suggesting to do the teams randomly, but rather the pieces. As in, teams would be established and with in the teams they would randomly handle out pieces.

As for the argument of Random vs. Pre-selected.

I'm much more for pre-selected, read to go as soon as we get there. The pre-meeting would be put to better use if it was used to verbally explain the cosplay chess rules and to introduce the teams to their respective chess masters.

I'm for a No Complaining rule, makes perfect sense and I think it should be applied either way.

Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: majinekochan on August 17, 2007, 08:54:28 pm
Yeah I think half the fun of it is not knowing who your gonna be but knowing that it'd fit your character. With the random you might get an "evil" character on the white team or even "cross" royalty (female King, or male Queen). With the Pre-selected way that won't happen, unless it fits the character.

Well, I can offer to reasons for offering a theoritical debate now:

1) It will eventually save Jamiche time if the time arises when she must decide how to approach asigning pieces.

and...

2) My personal reason, it keeps Cosplay Chess on the front page of the forums because we're replying to the thread, therefore generating awareness.

Well, this is a different topic than piece selection (as important as that may be), but I also want to throw in the suggestion of somehow figuring out a way so that all the pieces get to have some sort of fun in this (meaning, playing the attacker or the attacked). I recall at SakuraCon that this did not happen, and it was all a little...hectic.

...I feel sorry for the unused rooks that are all stuck in corners. :-X

D: I remember at Sakura con, that after the King was cornered the called a free for all and you just attacked people and it was a big ball of mess.

D: That's the only bad thing, is when your piece is never moved.

:D We were talking about it because were fruit cups and just wanted to debate :D That's why I started it xD Sorry.

:3 I was a pawn at Sakura Con. I was Al, Gluttony is my friend that was with us. xD The best part is dying or taking someone down. xD Best ever.

No, need to apolagize. It started as a simple suggestion, but its getting a little out of hand and we should let it go unless Jamiche asks an opinion.

I was so sad that I couldnt die dramatically cuz I was afraid Id pull my stiches. What a horrible Renji I make, HE woulda done it anyway. XP

That would come down to: Do you want a real chess game, or a cosplay chess skit?

In a real chess game, all the pieces shouldbe used. However, there is the possiblity that they will not be. It isn't always the wonderfully epic battles you see in movies or on TV specials (in fact, a lot of chess games in the media are horrifically inaccurate). If cosplay chess was a skit, it would be easy to find a match by one of the former great Grand Masters that would involve all the pieces getting their dues.

Post by: EvilAuthor on August 18, 2007, 09:53:38 pm
Chess matches at con are on different levels of how good they are and it depends on how well planned the event is, how in character the pieces are, and how good the players moving the pieces are.
I've seen video of epic battles, and I've also seen a very poorly planned game where they had to start over, because the bored with the pieces didn't match the real chess game being played and they couldn't figure out why.
I really think we need to plan as much of this as we can before hand. While I realise there's always a chance people won't show up, the event will go MUCH better if the pieces can prepare better.

Okay, so I'm gonna send in my application for cosplay chess in tonight as soon as I can find a nice picture of my cosplay. ^_^

Quick update for y'all -

We currently have 23 people registered, which means we still need at least 9 more people.  If you have not received an e-mail or PM from me confirming that your registration form was received, then you need to send in your information again.

Teams and positions will be decided once I have all the registration forms in, and I see which cosplays we have available.  If all goes well, you will be notified next week what your team and position are.  If we don't receive enough registrations prior to con to decide, we will be recruiting players at con, and you won't receive team/position info until the pre-meet on Monday.

The pre-meet will be an opportunity for you to get comfortable on the board, and a quick run-down of how the game will be played, as well as a chance to plan some battle strategy.  We will not be scripting the chess match, but we want you guys to be as prepared as possible.

And in reponse to the burning question - no, you don't get to pick your position, sorry.  All positions will be decided in advance, whether you get the info next week, or at the pre-meet.  Once you have your assigned postion, unless you can give me a compelling reason to change your assignment (or chocolate, I may be open for bribery ;D) that is the position you will play.

Title: Re: 2007 Cosplay Chess: Rules and Sign-up
Post by: Jamiche on August 22, 2007, 01:07:17 pm
After you fill out the form, there is button at the top left that says "Submit by E-mail"... it will send the info to your e-mail and you just send (after attaching your cosplay images, please :) )

If that doesn't work for you (some people have had problems) you can just e-mail all the form info and your image to chess@kumoricon.org.

Okay, check your e-mail... if you have received a confirmation e-mail from me, then you are good to go.  I received an Ed application, but that was the last one this morning... I don't think I received yours, Dark_M.  Try again, or if that doesn't work, just e-mail me the info.

I'm not sure yet how people will be notified (since this is the first year, I'm kinda making it up as I go along ;D).  I was leaning towards the idea of the team/postions being a surprise to the general public, and just e-mailing everyone their info... but soon I may be making a plea for a specifc type of cosplay, and that would give away the teams... hmm, decisions, decisions...

well, I did chess at sakura-con. and I was really nervous about it...but once I was on stage and watching everything play out- it was really hilarious, and fun!
really, just have things ready in the back of your mind (and maybe even practiced) so you don't feel unprepared.

*plan out your characters attacks: have a couple different ones ready. examples may be *a basic attack  or *calling someone to help  (ex: let's say cloud from ffVII. *slice with sword *call vincent for backup) or if your character isn't the fighting type...(ex: let's say kyouya from host club. *calls in the secret police *calls in hunny senpai with his fighting skills *finds a death note and uses it (yes, kyouya would be the one to find a death note XD ))

*have your death scene planned out:  know after the final blow of an opposing character...how you are going to die

*know your battle cries: what are some things your character might cry out? (ex: ansem from kingdom hearts  "DARKNESS")

*remember to be loud: you're on stage...there is an audience- if you're going to take the time to say something, ARTICULATE- say it LOUD AND CLEAR so they can understand and enjoy it

this is a chance to act silly and really be in character- so have fun .  ;D and don't be too afraid.

We are still a few pieces short, so we are still accepting registrations.  I will be assigning teams and pieces in a couple of days, so any position left open will be pawns - if I receive your sign-up after I've set the teams, you will most likely be a pawn.

Keep in mind tho, if we fill out the board, we still need back-up pieces (in the event someone doesn't make it, their cosplay is not complete, special attacks, etc..) and if we have enough time, we could run a second game.  So send in your registrations :)

Hmm, it's been a while since I've watched Bleach...maybe I should read/watch up on Ishida. x] Make sure I've got everything accurate...because although I'm told by many that I often act just like him, I've gotta know my facts.

I also think an introduction of the characters at the beginning of the event would be a cool idea, and have a cool announcer do it like it's a basketball game or something and get the audience going. |D So the people who haven't watched that anime, haven't read that manga, or haven't played that video game can at least know their names...and if the cosplay is hard to identify (maybe due to likeness to another costume, due to school uniform costumes and such), then they can know who's who.

Also...got this from SakuraCon's website, after their own first Cosplay Chess:

"For next year, I would really like to see the spaces numbered and lettered "3A" "4A" etc.. Mainly because that would make it easier for the chess players to move people (and also so they don't have to come out on to the board to move people) and because, and I had this in the rules originally, I would like for the pieces to leave the board for a battle... so the audience has a clear view, and so no one gets hurt."

Yeah, I'm dressing up as School Uniform!Ishida. x3 With an oversized needle and thread prop. I've actually dressed up as him once in the past, but this time I added the prop and a wig, so it'll hopefully look much better than last time...

And hopefully we will, because I'm no chess master, either. I'm sure everything will be cleared up at the pre-meet.

For attacks, I have a very nice gun that was given to me at Sakuracon. It's a dollar store gun and makes an adorable click when you pull the trigger. I doubt the click will be heard in the audience, but as long as my gun doesn't get taken at the airport, I'll have that on stage. I also have a Roy plushie I can throw at people. I WAS going to have a custom made Black Hayate plushie, but even though the woman who made it said she mailed it a week ago, the package hasn't come in yet and my flight it 7am tomorrow so I won't have my dog for this con. Sad.
I'm all set for cosplay chess and one of my roommates is a fellow piece on my team so there's no way I'll over sleep and miss the meeting. See everyone at con!

Well, I hope my bag doesn't get searched again. Last year for Kumoricon, I took $91 one dollar gold coins [had a collection] in a pokeball since I was otherwise broke. It scanned as a ball of metal so they searched my bag, ended up spilling my coins inside my bag, and then took my gun even though it was obviously fake. This one is even more obviously fake, so maybe I'll luck out.

If they do check your bag, they will take the gun even if it is fake. Airport security is like that.

please take note that if you turn in fake firearms into security before you get your ticket most will send it on your plan  and you can pick it up at your destination. I've done this a few times and they were only bothered when it was a sniper rifle prop and it looked very real.

I other words just call and ask and they will help you.

Is there anyone who is interested in being a special attack ninja slug?

The costume is an extremely simple hoody cape that you can put on over whatever you are wearing and take off after the attack. It shouldn't muss up a real cosplay costume too much. It might even be funnier if people could recognize a character under the hood.

For the attack, it would involve any ninja moves you can think of using your elbows or shoulders instead of your hands. Or wiggling around the victim until they are paralized by your "slime".

Anyone interested?
