Title: 2007 STREET TEAM!
Post by: Antares on November 05, 2006, 12:39:16 pm
Hello everyone! This is just a preliminary start to a thread that I think will be very active this year.

Street Team is, in a way, the pre-convention face of Kumoricon. These are the noble souls who brave talking to strange comic shop managers, interested librarians and other various parties who might want to advertise in the con book, donate an item or two to our live charity auction, or just display our fliers and posters in their stores.

Since our mascot was chosen early this year, we should be able to have posters and fliers very soon. If you would like to help out the con, but are short on time, this is an awesome way to help! Please post below and (although I am not officially the ST Leader) I will get in touch with you.

If you have helped in the past, please post and let us know what worked and what didn't. Also, if you have any suggestion as to benefits (tee shirts, patches, buttons) or another name for the group (someone last year said it sounded like an 80s breakdancing group), post those too!

Hey I learned on CSI that a Street Team is the group of hanger ons who do free work for a rapper to do advertising putting up posters and handing out flyers.  I was right ti suspect there is suposed to be break dancing involved

Official launch of ST will be at the Jan meeting, so let me know you thoughts on timing, things that work, things that don't, any suggestions etc. Any and all constructive input welcome!!! Also, anyone interested in ST-specific swag? Buttons? Teeshirts? Patches? ST dinner? I can't promise anything but as I said, now is the time to get all those ideas out there before things get cra-zy!

great idea just show "restaint" with the wash fangirls and bring Nekojawia along to entertain the kids

Ohhh and add a Jazz band called Otaku Funk the backup singers/dancer will be the Wash-O-Gals.  You have to play bass and wear your porkpie hat backwords and grow a little cheesy chin beard

Of course right on but will any one do it.

A multy Media and live presentation that traveled to schools and did shows on Japanese popular culture covering history, film, games, graphic arts and print could be a thinly disguised advertisement for Kumoricon and would boost attendance (at least in the chibi room) and create a larger pool of volunteers and staff (for K Con 2017).

I'm willing to do anything as long as I understand pretty good what I'm doing. Well and if I am equipped with the proper supplies. Of course if it invovles traveling to schools I would like to have other people with me. That would be fun.

NOTICE: Street Team 2007 will launch at the January General Meeting!

The January general meeting will be held at the Salem Public Library on Sunday, January 21, from 2-5pm.

101 Liberty St. SE
Salem, OR 97301

See http://kumoricon.com for links to mapquest / Googlemaps.

I would like to really start to plan the delivery dates and places for this year's poster / flier drops (will post where they ended up last year soon - watch this space!). Also go over what all we want to say. I should have the auction donation letter ready to hand out to Street Teamsters at the meeting, but I'm waiting on:

1. Letter asking people to buy an ad in conbook
2. Letter asking people to buy a table at Kcon
3. Anything else we want to get into the hands of store owners.

By meeting time I will have contacted people who have shown an interest in Street Team, but I'm gonna try to get some time at the meeting to assign stuff.

If anyone knows any other events we should be at
(Sakuracon, AsiaFest, Japanfest etc.) please P.M. me so that we can sort out how many posters and fliers we need to devote to them (and trades...)

Weeeee! Of we go!
Happy 2007 everyone!!!!

Just so you know, TomTheFanboy and I went to the 9:30 showing last night.  They had a Q&A session with Ford Riley, a co-writer for the project, and Kevin McKeever, a production/marketing guy for Harmony Gold.  They gave out some posters and answered fan questions about the movie.

I actually was able to talk to Kevin about the con and gave him a flier, and he gave me his business card.  He came to the con in 04, and apparently is friendly with Sean, and would love to hear from us.  So, I emailed Sean the info.

^_^

We also handed out some fliers and talked up other audience members.

It was a good night!

"ummmmm...."

If so then KONICHIWA! And welcome.

This is Antares (AKA Sarah Bartash), Street Team Leader for 2007. I am just making contact with yous-all to say hello, make sure you are still interested and gather some more info.

Street Team is, in a way, the pre-convention face of Kumoricon. You are the noble souls who brave talking to strange comic shop managers, interested librarians and other various parties who might want to advertise in the con book, donate an item or two to our live charity auction, or just display our fliers and posters in their stores.

What I need to know is this:

1. What is your real name?
2. What is the best way to contact you
(email address, phone number, forum PM etc.)
3. Where are you located?
4. Where do you know of that you would be willing to drop off fliers, ask about donations etc...?

5. Will you be at the JANUARY 2007 meeting (Salem Public Library on Sunday, January 21, from 2-5pm. 101 Liberty St. SE Salem, OR 97301
6. Are there other Aime-related things (clubs etc.) you are involved with or conventions you are planning on attending this year?

It is important for you to respond and keep in touch. I am also open to any suggestions, ideas, comments etc. you may have. I am working on some street team buttons and perhaps some other tchotchki exclusive for Street Team 2007 members, and in conference with the convention chair to find out what other things we can offer ST members. Stay tuned, and feel free to leave any information on our official link on the Kumoricon forums under "Get Involved"

Title: KCON At CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!
Post by: Antares on January 31, 2007, 09:06:28 pm
Hi everyone!! I would like to say that we are trying very hard to get a booth at this year's Chinese New Year which is taking place at the Portland Convention Center on Feb 10.

With up to 10,000 attendees, we'll need some help, so please get in touch ASAP if you can visit us at the booth for a bit!!!

This coming year is the Year of the Pig and the first day of the Chinese New Year will be on February 10th. To celebrate the longest and most important holiday on the Chinese calendar, the 2007 Chinese New Year Cultural Fair will be held on Saturday, February 10th at the Oregon Convention Center. The 2007 Chinese New Year Cultural Fair- Year of the Pig - will showcase both traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities including Chinese folk dance, Chinese instrumental music and
popular oldies, dragon and lion dance, and Kung Fu and martial arts demonstrations, and Chinese puppet show. There will also be more than 100 booths featuring different products and services. The attractions will
thrill both the young and old.

More info here:
http://www.portlandchinesetimes.us/cny07/2007nyf.html

I should know by Friday for sure if we have a booth.

That's my birthday weekend and I don't know what plans my friends are making. My birthday is on the 15th so they might be done by then. *shrug*

What locations should I visit when Pocky Club goes to Lloyd Center for our meeting on the 11th?
AKA the meeting-for-people-who-can't-go-to-Eugene?

They have a Suncoast and a little Sanrio type store hidden in the back. Is there anything else there, maybe the video game shops?

If any of you are worried about missing out on information at the meeting in Eugene this very same day, remember that Pocky Club is having a meeting in Lloyd Center where I will be giving out information from the meeting in Eugene.

I'm opening it up to all Portland staffers and not just the Club because not everyone can be everywhere at once. Also, if you need information taken TO Eugene, please notify me (or valliegirl if it's more "official" staff info) so I can bring it to the directors.

Would it be possible to put a word document on the Kumoricon page or somewhere we could download it of all the various email addresses and advertising rates, etc? That way everyone could easily print them out and leave a copy with comic stores and other potential vendors/donators.

Hello Everyone --

I will not be at the Feb. meeting in Eugene tomorrow
(DIVA classroom (Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts)
110 W Broadway, Eugene, OR 97401
from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.
)
so please say nice things about Street Team :D , and if you have any questions please email me. Also, don't forget to let me know where you are leaving fliers.

As I'm sure you know by now, I am going to be at the Portland Convention Center at the Chinese New Year Cultural Celebration from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Sat.  For those of you who are not going to Eugene (or drive real fast), you can stop by, say "hi" - bring your friends to register (hint hint!) Anyone who registers at the fair will have their badge mailed out special the following Monday. We will have a drawing for a "vintage" (2006) tee shirt and some stickers to give away, we'll be taking registrations and signing people up for volunteering. I'm bringing my camera! Admission is only $3!

We will also probably be doing the Uwajimaya Sakurafest in April. Please let me know if you are interested in working the booth there!

Thanks to all who attended the Chinese New Year Fair! We gave out over 200 fliers and about 60 reg forms, talked to tons of people - some who had never heard the word "anime" and others who are very excited to learn that an anime convention existed in the Portland / Vancouver area. We made some good contacts and hope to have photos up soon.

special thanks to lili and heidi for manning the booth!

Dearest ST peeps,

There is another fair next weekend, the Asian Celebration in Eugene, at
which Copic Marker has offered us a little bit of space on their table.
I already have three people who have volunteered for shifts at manning
the table.

So far we have the following people interested in helping, but we still have some holes in the sced. we need to fill:

- Ellen
- Vondan
- Rachael

Please let me know if there is anyone else out there who would like to attend and help out Street Team!

Once we have a count we can organize shifts.

Here is their web site:
http://www.aaforegon.com/asiancelebration/

It is two days, Saturday and Sunday, February 17-18, and 10am-6pm both
days.

Contact me via email, PM or just post in this thread, thanks!

As the person who conduited this (Marianne proposed it to me, I forwarded it to Meg & Jeff) I spoke with Marianne today. She is the Copic distributor who is  sponsoring KC to share half her table.

Tonight she picks up the passes. There are like 10 of them, like 5 volunteers per day potentially.

Someone will need to pick these up before the event or they would have to pay to come into the event to pick them up during.

I could potentially meet Marianne there while she's setting up Friday night. She sets up after 4. I would be able to be there after 5:30 if she is still there.

I might be able to come by her work some time tomorrow instead potentially........

I personally could not do a shift until after I got out of school on Saturday, meaning no earlier than 2 on Saturday.

Maybe I could do something like 2 to 5 on Saturday.

Sunday is my only day off and so if possible I would prefer to keep it that way.

However, if the other folks can only come Saturday, then I would be willing to do perhaps 2 hours on Sunday, provided I did not also have to do Saturday, if that makes sense.

I have never been shown how to take registrations and it would be helpful if I could get that info ahead of time if possible.

Thanks everyone!

PS It would be great if someone from Street Team could let Marianne know what to expect, either through me or I left Meg a voice mail with Marianne's email address for her to pass on to Jeff.

Hello Everyone!

First off

Team Eugene
- I will be PMing you with more details, but thank you for being willing and able to help out this weekend.  We will probably just have fliers to hand out and posters to hang up - we will probably not be taking registrations - just point people towards our website (shown on the fliers) if they want more info or wish to register. What we learned from the Portland Chinese New Year festival was that it is important to educate the public on what anime is, what kumoricon is and that we exist (and that we're fun and there's lots to do etc. etc.)

Secondly - here are some photos from the Chinese New Year in Portland:

Just wanted to give one more shout out for the "Oregon Asian Celebration" at the Eugene Lane County fairgrounds this weekend. Times are 10a.m. - 6p.m. Sat and Sun. They are expecting 20,000 people (prob. less because of the rain, but still a ton!)

They will have cooking demos, crafts, martial arts, entertainment, an Asian marketplace and lots more.

Admission is only$3 and KCon will be sharing a booth with Copic markers. If you go, please stop by and say hi!

I need someone to put together a convention photo / scrap book to be used at Street Team outreach (like SakuraFestival, other cons etc.) That way we can show people what the con looks like. At certain places we can just have a laptop showing a slide show or even YouTube, but not all places have power. Anyone want to help?

At the Pocky Club meeting I dropped of some fliers and posters with Oishii Desuyo and her friends. Since they're in clackamas they're 67% more likely to visit Fubon in the next month. They're all official members of Pocky club now, and therefore Street Team volunteers.

I told them to find this thread and post if thy find places to drop them off. I also gave them two sets of the Street Team info packs. Jeff can attest to this since he showed up at the meeting and made our day.

I have already dropped off fliers at Things From Another World in Beaverton. That's my comics shop so I stop by there often to make sure they're stocked and out posters are still on the windows.

I didn't see any fliers but I know that the Kinokuniya bookstore in Beaverton has our posters up.

I can probably stop by Heroes and Hobbies in Beaverton, but I don't like those guys, they're creeps.

Repost from main page:

April 23, 2007 – Tier 2 Registration ends on Sunday

That’s right: you have 6 days to register before the price goes up to $35. If you pre-register after Sunday, you will not receive your badge until August (or at the Convention if you opt for Will Call).

We’ve just passed 400 preregistrations. With so many registrations at Sakura-Con, Sakura Fest, and online in the past few weeks, we can see increased excitement this year over last.

So register today! Let’s shoot to get 600 registrations by Sunday, April 29 at 11:59 pm!

We can do this! Using our patented Street Team Word of Mouth powers, be sure to mention to anyone who is thinking about coming to Kumoricon that if they want to get the best price, they should register now!

Thanks all.

There's a whole bunch of places along Cedar Hill Blvd in Beaverton that I haven't been able to get to since it would take so long to walk to all of them with a big bag of flyer and stuff.

Any takers for racking up the volunteer hours? I'll buy you an ice cream cone!  :D

I'm just curious, is there a list that we can look at that has all the places that have been visited and what has been done there. For instance, one place I went to accepted a few flyers, but didn't want a poster or advertising/donation info at the time, because it was so early. I'd just like to know where the word has been spread and...how much of the word, I guess  :)

However, I can only update it with as much info as Street Team members give me, so if you see something that needs to be updated, let me know.

We really should plan to start closing the loop with some of the stores etc. (after the May meeting would be great) since deadlines for Vendor and Panel reg is coming up in June (I think)...

Ok I need more fliers!

Haha Sarah I will also e-mail this to you, but dakrum and I went out and hit the Vancouver area.

We went to Amazing Stories, a comic book store, and gave them fliers.

Sushi Hana on 136th and Mill plain as well as Fusion Bubble Tea right next door and gave them fliers

At the Vancouver mall we hit:
Borders - poster (which they are now displaying) and fliers, they were VERY excited because they will be at the CON this year since it is in Vancouver
Suncoast - gave fliers and poster for the employees
Barganza Pearl Tea - gave fliers
Hot Topic - gave fliers
Audrey's Treasures (Hello Kitty Store) - fliers and 2 posters because the cashier wanted an extra for themself
Unique Imports - gave fliers, but is was SO cute, this couple cam over to us to ask us about the anime convention and if they could have a flier for their granddaughter because she is coming to K-con as her first con and we gave them a poster too!  Felt special <3

Ok and that is really it.  Went back to Mind Candy but they were closed so I will have to go again later!

Before Pirates on Saturday Mr_Mustash did street team work under my supervision (I showed him where the places were).

We visited Small World (a Sanrio store, one poster), Game Trader (who took posters, fliers, and the info sheets), Powells Books (the rest of our fliers for their manga section), Borders (hung a poster and fliers on the community board), and Best Buy (took some fliers for the break room).
All of these place are in Cedar Hills Crossing on Cedar Hills Blvd in Beaverton.

We also got over to the Beaverton Wunderland. They gave us their office number for people to call. 503-238-8582

Heroes and Hobbies was closed and has no hours posted. Again, I've heard bad things about that guy. His store is mostly back issues and not new manga type stuff.

Things from Another World in Beaverton still has enough fliers.

There is a Bubble Bubble place right near Beaverton Fred Meyer that someone should visit as well.

One of my biggest faults is forgetting to bring posters and fliers when I go places. D:

However! That's going to be changed! :3
Places I'm planning to hit soon:
• Sushiland in Clackamas
• Things From Another World in Milwaukie
• Suncoast in Clackamas Town Center

Anymore places in Clackamas/Milwaukie you'd suggest?

BTW, Vic and I handed out a few fliers to people at our school and we've seem to have gotten good feedback. :3

Hello everyone!

Well, Street Team 2007 is winding down. We are still looking for any shops, restaurants etc. that have shown an interested in being involved (vendors, donations, ads etc.) but other than that (and due to the fact that we are nearly out of fliers, added to the fact that the batch we were going to have at the July meeting was misprinted, AND registration ends AUGUST 11 -pant pant-) we're in the home stretch.

If you have leftover fliers, I ask that you get them out onto the streets now!
Hit your favorite / most popular places again ('specially busy places like Powell's bookstores or Things From Another World comic shops, etc.)

And, be sure to tell everyone you know that the last chance to pre-register at the $35 rate
(and hopefully not have to stand in the registration line - pre-reg should be much faster this year because people will have their badge ahead of time) is FRIDAY AUGUST 10!

Thanks again to all of you!! You have really helped this year's pre-reg skyrocket (at last count it was 800 strong and growing - a number we didn't reach for anther few weeks last year!!!)

The little billies won't hurt you Jaz! don't be scared of them!
You can tell they'r good goats because they have circles for pupils.

Evil goats have hourglass pupils and sometimes mohawks.

I have ab unch of fliers and I will be going by Powell's in Beaverton soon (harrypotterharrypotterharrypotter) and I'll be sure to check Things in Beaverton as well.

Antares, if you can post or send me the phone number of West Side Pizza, and any of the other delivery places downtown I'd like to add the phone numbers to my map.

I saw a Chinese takeout place but I never got it on the map, I noticed you grabbed one of their menus, could I get their address from you?

I'm planning on getting their menus linked up later once I know what places delivery.

leashy, have you eaten West Side's pizza before?

I have and they are very yummy! They have lots of specials where you get a pizza, 2 liter soda, cheese bread, and dessert pizza for around $20.  I will see if I can stop in to get a bunch of their coupon things for our swag bags or something.  They also deliver and are the closest pizza place to CON, I think they also stay open until around 11 or later as well

I'll give them a ring at Westside pizza next week. They seemed really interested in providing coupons for our bags, as did Burgerworld.

From Jeff -- Seattle has been fliered -

·         Zanadu Comics (downtown location, gave enough for them to bring half to U-District location)
Also posters
http://www.zanaducomics.com/

·         Kinokuniya Seattle
They recognized Kumoricon and said their Portland store was participating! Better result than last year, where they just had me place the flyers inside the Uwajimaya flyer rack. This time they put them on the checkout counter.

·         International Model Toys
Also posters

·         Video Hop
Next door to IMT—Japanese video rental store. Mostly Japanese TV shows recorded directly off of TV on home VHS tapes and DVD-Rs, intended for Japanese-speaking customers. Carried a good deal of anime, but a haphazard selection and not really an anime-themed store.
Gave a small number of flyers

·         Anime Kingdom (Bellevue)
Also posters
http://animekingdomonline.com/

·         Kicks Hobby Japan
Also posters
Interested—asked about exhibitors table. I emailed information to them tonight, and CCed exhibistors@kumoricon.org. Said there was a good chance they would be willing to have a table there. I also gave them program ad info.
http://www.kicks-hobby.com/

·         Scarecrow Video
Also posters
I had emailed them in advance to display these. I work with Scarecrow as part of my Sakura-Con staff position of Video Room Coordinator, also (which is a fun coincidence).
http://www.scarecrow.com/

All of these were repeats except for Video Hop.

Great! Thanks Jeff!

I am out of fliers and don't know if the messed up batch is reprinted. I will try to take the posters I have (I still have a lot) and double check places to see if they need anything else / want to donate / are or can display poster. If any Street Team members still have posters, pls. check places you have dropped fliers (main stores at lease) and see if you can put up a poster (if they don't have one up already.)

There are still about 3 weeks left to preregister and have your badge mailed to you!

When I checked on Things from Another World, they still had the poster but I had to take back the fliers. they told me they don't want fliers on the counter for more than 6 months. Also, there were other people bothering them about the con, so pay attention to the street team updates people!

So next year, I'll bring them their fliers in May and the crucial summer months will be covered.

If I didn't state this before, we have gone around to all the restaurants w/in walking distance from the Convention Center in Vancouver, and a few within driving distance, to alert them to the fact that we will be having the convention over Labor Day Weekend.

Last night I spoke with Excalibur Comics and dropped off some fliers.

Also, we have more fliers so please PM me if you need more!

Do we need to get in touch with any of the restaurants about coupons for swagbags or conbooks?

I just emailed Burgerworld and West Side Pizza.

Starbucks might warrant a call-back. Same w/ Subway. We didn't get a chance to stop at Quizno's (which is in the same bld. as the indoor portion of the Farmer's Market.

Others are up for grabs -- we'd need to get the list back from Jeff T cuz I didn't make a copy :-P

Ooh, I always forget about that Quizno's! (mental note to eat there at least once come Labor Day)

Hey, it might help get the Quiznos to work with us if you get a recommendation from the Quiznos next to the Doubletree, they had just opened before Kumoricon 2005 and they gave swag coupons. If it worked well for them they could probably give a good recomendation to their fellows up in Vancouver.

From what I recall they were only open until 4pm on saturdays and closed on sunday so good luck because they probably are closed on labor day

That's fairly dumb. They won't stay in business long that way. Nevertheless they may extend their hours for us, especially since we won't be the only draw for a lot of people to that area that weekend.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2007/07/vancouvers_indoor_farmers_mark.html

A sad note to that effect: "Less than two years after the Vancouver Farmers Market jumped into the restaurant business with visions of a bustling indoor bazaar like Seattle’s Pike Place Market, its directors are giving up.

The nonprofit organization is more than $200,000 in debt and losing more almost every day.

The indoor market this week told its vendors that the indoor space will close Sept. 30. The weekend outdoor market will remain."

Too bad! And the guy at the indoor infodesk was really nice - telling us about how he bought Pokemon for his daughter but ended up getting hooked!

HI!

Please check out the Anime News and Current Events - two movies at two different theaters.
If anyone is going and has fliers, please ask nicely if we can leave some! I really wish the theaters would give us a headsup. We will just have to keep on them!

*EDIT - I stopped by there tonight - 7/30 and dropped off fliers. Got all the info on how to get notified next time they show Anime!
