Title: Anyone know anything about DVD-R drives?
Post by: Michael_Hopcroft on July 27, 2004, 09:44:21 pm
One of the birthday presents I'm getting is an inetrnal, OEM DVD-R drive for my computer. Since I no longer have broadband access, DVDs and CD-Rs are about the only way I can get the fansubbed anuime I desire and the only way I can give such fansubs as one can legtimately give out. I have other uses for the drive, but I can't help but wonder if anyone else has DVD-R drives, what they use them for, and whether there is nyone who can help me plug the darn thing in, set it up, and get started on burning DVDs.

I have a friend 9whoi  is not coming to Kumoricon) who is in the process of transferring a lot of his fansub collection to DVD-R. Ehich is lucky for me as I;ve gotten some pretty neato anime as a result. But I can;t help but wonder what would happen if people started trading DVD-Rs and CD-Rs the same way they used to trade VHS fansubs ten years ago, in the height of such outfits as Tomodachi Studios (I still remember how much pleasurable stress I recieved from each new volume of Marmalade Boy) and the Techno=Girls? Anyone even remember those days? Or is it a period we would rather forget in this age where almost everything gets licensed right away?

what do u need help with?

im about to buy one so i can back up alot of junk

the cables should be socketed they will only fit in one way

if its the only drive on the cable set the jumper to master hook up the power
slid it in then put the screws in and ur done

if its not the only one on the chain one of them has to be set to slave (secondary)

you could always hit the drive brand site up and find direction there probly

Yeah, almost all fansub trading has migrated over from cds to DVDs lately. If you're looking for a place to trade at, I highly recommend noated.com! I've been trading there for years, and my collection has gotten so big that it's overflowing 4 of those pop out cd holders that each hold 60 discs, plus two 100 disc spindles, and most of that's on data and R-1 dvds. I've had about 3 different DVD burners since the time they first started coming out, and I don't know what I'd do without it. Seeing as how I still store anime on my hard drives and anime file server and keep overflowing the 360 GB of space, it would take waaaaay too many cds to archive and back things up.

Outside of archiving your anime off to dvds, making copies of your R-1 dvds, and backing up your hard drive, there aren't too many other uses for dvd burners, mainly because full episode or movie downloads are the only files that typically are large enough to easily fill a whole dvd. This is just my experience tho...

If you need help installing the drive and aren't too far away then I could do it for you. It's really quick and easy as long as you're not like some of my friends who are paranoid of even opening their computer's case   Then again, I'm a computer science major and have helped build and continuously upgrade and rebuild almost all of the 7 desktop computers in my house, so I like doing stuff like playing with new computer hardware  :D
