In terms of recruitment, we would espeically appreciate having more females sign up.  If you have before, give a shout out because I didn't see many at the con.

I will be back as well next year.  It is my intent to be involved with the Yojimbo every step of the way but who knows in what way.  But I look forward to being with you guys and I'm certainly not going to miss the chance to see everyone next year. :)

As A yojimbo for a better part of the cons Life, I want you all to know what kylite said is true but it is worth seeing everybody happy.

Also everybody loves waffles and if you join the yojimbo we can kick back and hang.

Or in some cases tie up some of the beloved goggle squad.

I'd like to point out that the more Yojimbo there are, the less difficult the job will become.  We should definitely aim to have a better ratio of Yojimbo to congoer then 1:100 for next year.  I can hardly handle 2 or 3 crazy congoers myself, so I have a lot of respect for the Yojimbo, who somehow manage to keep everything from exploding and dying.

I'm already signing up as staff for the gaming room (where I'll certainly be more effective), so I can't help out as Yojimbo, but I'll be rootin' ya'll on!

Here is a stupid question:

Do you have to volunteer before you become a Yojimbo? I'm very interested to be either :OO

Post by: kylite on September 18, 2007, 10:47:14 pm
nope, my first year as yojimbo I walked into kumoricon the night before the con looking to pre-reg. they asked me to help them set up a few things, I was more the happy to help. they asked if I wanted to be security, I said yes, next thing I knew I was yojimbo LOL.

No need to be a volunteer prior to joining the Yojimbo.  Most of us have rather amusing stories of how we started out, myself included.  The past few years it's been a bit more formalized but even so if you want to sign up to join us than you are quite welcome too.  You just need to contact the Ops Director, either in email, at a meeting, or through the Yojimbo recruitment officer (kylite).  There is a staff form on the website to fill out and the trainings to get to but otherwise signing up is a breeze.

Alright ♥ thank you all :D I'm a little nervous but I hope I will do alright.
And I already preregistered, will that be a problem? If so please let me know.
And do I mail my application? Or just post it here? I'm sorry to be a bother and all of that.

P.S.
Is it bad that I'm a girl? Do you need to be a male? If so then I'm sorry [looks down at body] DX It's impossible for me
Title: Re: Yojimbo (security) Sign-Up 2008
Post by: kylite on September 19, 2007, 10:41:35 am
although the yojimbo squad is mostly made up of males, we do have a few females and we always welcome more.  There are times when the situation requires a womans touch such as addressing a female attendee about improper cosplay. coming from a guy its just plain creepy LOL.

just post the required info here OR send me a PM and I will add you to our roster. as for you already pre-registering, I will see what can be done but I don't know the exact rules on that one yet.

Well honestly that is why I joined staff.  I'm more of a wall flower in groups but I decided the best way to meet people and have fun with anime was to join as a staff member.

anime gurl It will be a pleasure to have you along for the ride. I remember my first year as a yojimbo, it was 05 I went to the meeting and found out they wouldn't let me do it.  then I was kicking back int he game room and kylite comes up to me and pulls me outside. I figure I was in trouble of some sort maybe he had remember that at 04 every time I saw him I would mention to him what his fma costume reminded me of. but he instead asked me to join yojimbo which I did with great honor.

the yojimbo are all one big family. we watch out for each other and take care of each other. but like most good families, a little rough housing is always in the works LOL

is there anyway to be a part time yojimbo?  Like not be staff and only help out one day of the con?
Title: Re: Yojimbo (security) Sign-Up 2008
Post by: MichaelEvans on October 08, 2007, 03:36:11 pm
That... could depend.  Do you want to instead also participate in another staff level position and happen to be Yojimbo for a day too? (That would fulfil the staff commitment requirements that I recall are attached to the position. ... You know, I could have sworn fulfill was spelled this way... I Really need to check out my dictionary support.)
Title: Re: Yojimbo (security) Sign-Up 2008
Post by: melchizedek on October 08, 2007, 05:50:13 pm
Well the whole thing is that I feel for the overworked yojimbo but and want to help out, but at the same time I still want to have fun at the con.  I was helping someone watch a door at the con just because they looked tired and needed help but because I didn't have a staff badge it wasn't legit for me to watch a door alone.

Not saying I'll do this but, it looks like street team is a staff position right?  Would that be an example of what you were talking about?
Title: Re: Yojimbo (security) Sign-Up 2008
Post by: RoamingGnome on October 08, 2007, 09:09:32 pm
I'm sure I will be corrected if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that street team is now considered a volunteer position.
Title: Re: Yojimbo (security) Sign-Up 2008
Post by: MichaelEvans on October 09, 2007, 03:53:17 am
I'm trying to recall exactly what I heard when I was as tired as I was by the end of the last meeting... but I recall hearing that any position must exist on the organisational charts.  Thus... Look Here (http://www.kumoricon.org/?page_id=86)  (Yes, it's hidden in plain sight by being listed not as a specific document, but a hyperlink like you just saw.  Hit the front page, then Documents, and it's towards the end.)

The org chart for Publicity lists a 'Street Team' (staff) position, reporting to 'Street Team' (management), reporting to Publicity Director (JeffT for this year).

Now, if that position is to be removed... well, I don't specifically recall hearing that, but I'm sure Jeff would know about any such motions.

I just remember it was part of the changes they had mentioned at the beginning of the meeting when we had voted on the bylaws changes.  They had made changes to what is considered volunteers and what is considered staff.  If I recall that mooks and grunts also will not be considered a staff position either.

I'm pretty sure they said positions like street team will be made into a volunteer thing, as it is not based on hours, it is based on how many places they go to.

Correct, I'd not remembered hearing street team, but it's in the min (near the top, first item) (http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=5697.0) (and honestly I wasn't trying to memorise those details, just the general outline of things... being there for another 4-5 hours after that didn't help).

The quick answer to the cosplaying Yojimbo is yes, mostly.  The rules regarding it are as follows:
   1) Under most circumstances weaponry or prop weaponry can't be worn with a costume while doing the Yojimbo work as you do not wish to frighten or intimidate any attendees you need to talk with.  They should be left in the room until your time off. Exceptions to this can be made depending on the prop, and permission from the Yojimbo Manager
   2) During hours working as a Yojimbo, you should not wear a mask as you want to appear friendly to attendees and approachable.
   3) Any form of costume can be worn while working as a Yojimbo so long as it falls within the normal convention policy guidelines but you must be willing to wear the red haori in such a way as to keep it visible from front and back at all times you are working.
None of these have seemed to be a problem over the years, at least I have never recieved any complaints regarding them.  If you have any questions about a particular prop or costume you are welcome to PM me about it this month, or PM the Yojimbo Manager after this month, once the job has been assigned.

Question [raises hand sheepishly]
Do we get sized for the haori? Or are we just given any size?

Post by: Trumby on October 17, 2007, 12:42:33 pm
The haori's are one size..and they are big.

I cosplay and do yojimbo at the same time. Just some costumes you can't really wear while wearing a haori. The question about attending panels and such: for the most part, we are usually working most of the con, but how we did it last year allows ypu to schedule your free time around events you want to attend or possibly working events you want to attend so you can still go to them.

Okay, for those of you who have signed up on the yojimbo roster but have not made it to a meeting yet, I highly suggest you do what you can to be at the June general meeting.  We need to get you signed up as staff (bring $10 with you, that's your reg fee) and on the staff section of the forums.  I will post the remainder of the training schedule for the summer as well as other pertinent information later.

I apologize for anyone who hasn't received a reply yet *smacks kylite for not updating the roster in a timely manner*.  If you haven't already seen, the meeting is still on the 22nd and will be at Clark College in Vancouver.  The more people that show up the better, as I'd really like to have most of our squad registered as staff by the end of July.

Just a thought for any and all of you who have either signed up to be on the yojimbo squad, or are thinking about it.  We really need you signed up as staff ASAP, we're less than three months out from the con and we need to make sure we have a full roster, I would like to have all potential yojimbo signed up as staff by the July general meeting.

a big sorry to everyone for not getting back to you sooner, iv been letting life get a bit in the way and im getting back on track now :) I really do hope to see you all at the general meetings form here on out if you can make it. Please note if you have not attended a general meeting or yojimbo training session by the august general meeting you will NOT be eligable to attend as yojimbo staff. I am placing this restriction in the hopes to motivate some of you. we have 9 who are paid and trained, the rest have not paid or filled out staff forms. (tho some have trained)

*edit by Hawkeye*
I think what kylite means is that it will be very unlikely you will be allowed to attend as staff if you're not signed up by the final August general meeting, as there are at least two that month.

For any of our current yojimbo under 18 and any thinking of joining yojimbo, you do indeed need to fill out the same parental consent/guardianship paperwork as any other attendee would.  You also will have to abide by the convention curfew, meaning that you will need to be out of convention space by 12:00 AM.  If you have any other questions about it, feel free to talk to me or kylite.

Hello,

My friend and I went to K-Con last year and loved it. This year she wanted to join the Yojimbo, now she would have done this herself, but she doesn't have a computer right now.

How would one go about joining the Yojimbo? She lives in the Portland area and she would really like to know.

Updates for any and all who have either signed up to be yojimbo or want to.  The final time to do so is during the final general meeting on August 16th.  Anyone under the age of 18 will need to have all parental consent/guardianship forms filled out.  If you've already signed up and want a custom image on your staff badge, please bring it to the meeting this weekend in digital format.  The training schedule for rest of summer goes as follows:  July general meeting, July 27th, all four Sundays in August (even the week before con), and both general meetings in August.  If none of these work for you, please tell us so we can work with you.  Also, the meeting on August 24th will be conducted by kylite on his own as I have tickets for Phantom of the Opera that day.

Just a reminder, we have a training session scheduled for this upcoming Sunday at 2 pm, Pioneer Place Mall.  Our resident cameraman tomthefanboy may show up to film the training session which I've encouraged him to do, so the more people who can attend, please do so (it's not required, I'd just like to give him as many people for the filming as possible).

for clarification, 2pm, pioneer place mall, food court, center section. You can spot me as all in black with the exception of blue sleeves and a black hat. Megan will be wearing black on skirt, shirt, shoes, and red on hat and tie.

Hope to see people there :)

I got a question

last year I was too young they said so instead I just did random volunteer work like I watch the game room door until suddenly I was being awakend and told that my shift was over and thanks alot. after that I was a run around go to boy for about an hour. and that morning when I signed in I noticed they were a bit short shifted so I asked them if they needed help they said yeah, and then I sat back there and punched cards until they were done. anyways my question is can I do that this year too because I want to do con stuffs too?

well it sounds like you want to be a volunteer more then a yojimbo :) (yojimbo are pretty much on duty all of con)

yeah pretty much except like if I see somewhere under staffed, would it be cool if I offered help? like instead of actually signing up to be a volunteer just helping when I saw some in trouble? oh is there any way you could possibly tell me if were gonna have more staff?

Actually, "roaming helper" would be a fantastic volunteer position.  Come to the August 16th meeting; I want to talk to people about developing this concept further and it would be great to have an experienced roaming helper there.
