Just so everyone expects it, I'll be updating the forums to the latest version of phpBB shortly. Knowing phpBB, there may be some snags. Hopefully not major ones.
More importantly, I'll also be replacing phpBB with Simple Machines Forums in the near future. This will provide us with a lot more features. We will be able to do more stuff with moderation, and implementing modifications (and removing them!) will be a LOT easier. Things may look a lot different but all of your information will still be there. Your old threads, your profiles, everything will import over.
Consider this a public input session. Any questions? Concerns with SMF? I'll even entertain alternative recommendations.

I've never heard of that particular forum. I'd love to see the Kumoricon forums using vBulliten, myself. Thats probably just me, because I honestly think thats the best forums out there.

Can we consider a chat room? We can't control moderation, but think of the amount of staff and volunteer coordination that could happen. I believe our attendees will behave, and if not, we can come up with a plan of action.

I don't know the logistics of it, but we could probably do the java type irc chat here on the site, then anyone else that knows irc can just jump on irc.
I don't know a whole lot about forum software unfortunately, but I am pretty sure vb3 has a chat room feature that actually allows your forum moderators and the like to be able to moderate the chat (can easily do the same with irc) when they are there.

I use EasyMOD to update my phpBB. Works pretty good. Haven't had any problems so far. I even have other mods in place, too. It beats the hell out of having to do everything by hand.

EasyMOD has been nothing but trouble for us. Half the time it doesn't install a mod properly and half the time when it does, the mod doesn't work for some reason.
SMF has a really nice one-click mod install and update system already built in that is even simpler to use than EasyMOD. I expect it to work as effectively as it is easy to use.

I noticed that Riza-chan and "kylite" joined. Sucks I'm always away at the time people join. Oh and ryo-ohki and sasami are both my bots. >_>;

Just to make sure, when you say our profiles would be carried over, you include our post counts in that as well right? I'd hate to have passed 1000 posts just to lose them all........... again. I know I speak for the people with post rankings above my own on this point.
Also, the subject of user groups. It was said before that we aren't big enough to warrant them, does that opinion still stand?

Heh heh, thanks reppy. My only regret is that I don't have any good scans of those pictures from Kumoricon '03.

You mean Pocky Club? It was never that they weren't big enough, it's more that we would prefer they be used for official purposes, primarily assigning forum permissions. For example, General Staff are General Staff so they can have access to the private staff forums, which as staff they should have access to.

I promise. I want to make sure we can properly import the existing database without any problems when we switch to the new forums.

As a word of warning, we are doing some stuff, like right now. So if the forums go bonk, sorry.
Update: if it was going to fail, it would have now. Our database server is currently chugging away converting our database over to the new system.
2nd update: conversion is done, and no damage to our existing forum. We now have an exported copy of the forum to work with and investigate what we can do with (and if anyone's posts got lost, so far it looks like they haven't.)

Well, this morning I couldn't access the forums or the main page, but everything is normal now.
It was at about 11:30am today when that happened.
