Exactly ask the title asks.
My group and I want to go to the dance, but this is all of our's first year at Kumoricon, and I figured I might find out a bit ahead of time what we should be expecting. 83
Like, how many people tend to show up?
Do people go in their cosplays still? Or is it more of a "normal clothing" thing?
Are there refreshments by chance?
-
Will my daddy be supervising?
anyways yeah you can be in your cosplay but I would say just wear anything really, also its gonna be fun and get ready to get your techno/anything groove on!.!
-
The Dance? What's to be expected?
Shenanigans... And lots of it.

The dance is an officially classified Hootenanny. That is to say, chalk full of hoot with just a little bit of nanny.
But what can you expect?
Lots of great music. We stick with PG-13 rating until midnight, when last year we kicked it up into an adult swim those of us 18 and over. I think Portand has a curfew of midnight (and the Yojimbo enforce it?) for those under 18.
Lots of people in cosplay attire. At least a few hundred people wander in and out all night and the dance floor is usually full with a core group of people shakin' it. Beware the conga line full of cosplayers.
Lots of colorful lights. More than last year. Maybe some random AMV images projected on the screen beside the stage.
We haven't had beverages in the past except for a water service, Yojimbo will tell you what you can and cannot bring into the dance.
We have the main room with a dance floor. Usually the dance is closest to the stage with the Dj's spinning on the stage, further towards the back are tables and chairs for those who need a break from all the beats.
It's a fun little event and my team puts a lot of effort and planning into making the dance one hell of an event. Hope to see you there.

Most people stay in their cosplay but like me, Im gonna change cause my costume will get wrecked If I dance for hours in it.
ALOT of people show up. At first its packed and you got to wait a bit to get in but as the night goes on slowly people leave. Last year they had a dance floor in front with a stage where the DJ was and in back they had tables set up for people to sit with water in the back. But unless you are one of the first people in there you wont get a table, lol.

WOO! REPRESENT xD
trust me, you'll have a lot of fun. Oh and I SUGGEST that you guys do the conga line lol fun as hell if I so say so myself...

snakeling - You've officially became one of the coolest people of the day. I'm giving you two points for using "hootenanny." Where's Zhalf when you need him to comment?
-
expect randomness!!
-
Expect terror the likes of which many have seen but few have survived.
But mostly expect fun. Lots of people will be on the dance floor but don't let that get to you. If you take it slow and not force your way through you can get around the dance floor easily.
There are also tables nearby for you to put your stuff down and/or rest if you need a break.
-
the floor tends to....bounce.....it literaly moves up and down when a song lots of people like comes on. but there has to be the BELL conga around Hell_Kitty at some point in time wether at thee dance or not.
-
The dance last year was loads of fun, so I expect it to be even better this year.
Everything I was about to say was basically covered, but make sure you have comfortable, COOL clothing. I was in my cosplay outfit as Winry, and even that got horrible. It gets stuffy, sweaty, and hot, so make sure you have something to keep you cooled down.
-
I didn't stay too long because I was wearing sandals and my feet were hurting within an hour. My suggestion is wear comfortable shoes. I'll still be in my Izumi cosplay, but with better shoes at the dance.
-
BEWARE...of bad body ordor. there's gonna be a lot of it. even after people told everyone to put on some deodorant. so beware of peple lifting up there arms. the smell will arise, muwahahahahaha *coughs*
but it's better to have comfy shoes and get free water. free COLD water = <3
the dance = lots of love and fun <33
-
We should have one of the staff walk around spraying people with a fire extinguisher full of deodorant.
-
I personally avoid the dance but thats due to my enhanced hearing. LOL my poor ears were ringing for days after my last big dance LOL but ill be glad to help people to the dance and provide the with nice cold water

i hear ya. i love to dance and stuff but i'm not a fan of loud music, i'm always conscious of damaging my ears so i usually bring earplugs. hopefully the dance floor won't be packed like sardines, i gots to have some elbow room to dance like a mofo. should be fun either way.
-
I adore loud music. I listen to my iPod on full blast and wish it could get louder. XD I'm gonna kill my ears. But hopefully by the time I'm 30 we'll have electronic ears. That'd be rad.
-
so rad!! anyways the dance will pwn!
-
whaaaat?! i was at kumori con last year, and i didn't know anything about a dance...maybe thats cause i was in the videogame room half the time, but stiiiill! a dance! that sounds like a lot of fun! >w< what day is it on? I definitely wanna go!
-
Yeah! There are gonna be some sick DJ's spinning. So expect fun to ensue at this years dance! Last years was absolutely awesome, and it sounded as if everyone really loved it!
Also, for you more adventurous types, theres a fun little rave on the 1st, near PDX! It will be GREAT! Theres a seperate post I made on this same section that tells you all about it! ( :
-
and please on night of loud music wont kill you ears
-
I'm hoping that the DJ won't stick to just techno or just J-pop, but throw a variety of stuff out.
-
Yeah he did that way to much last year. I asked him to play "shout" last year
-
Who is the DJ this year?
-
I remember back in '03 and '04 I wanted so badly to go to the dance, but I was still an itty bitty high schooler living with my parents, so I wasn't allowed.
Haha, now I'm in college and I can do what I want. >: D
Sounds like the previous dances have been fun? >_<
-
That would be nice to hear any techno and Jrock/Jpop. At sakura they played a lot of techno and I stayed dancing for 4 hours straight without stopping, except for some water. ^_^
-
I'm just hoping they play some Hardcore. Gotta get that blood flowing somehow ( ;
-
There are some classic party songs that need to be played. There needs to be the obligatory techno and J-whatever music... But I want some decent American rock. They had Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" last year... But that was pretty much it... We need more.
-

Baby Got Back
Mr Roboto
Engel
Mama Said Knock You Out
What else?

Oh man, the techno song that is played at EVERY dance in the history of ever. Sandstorm by Darude. XD

I'll tell you what has to be played: Resublimity from Kannadzuki No Miko.

..."What is love?" by Haddaway
I can't believe people keep over-looking that, whenever that song is played, no matter the situation, it automatically becomes a dance.
I'd love to hear "Want You Bad," it's a good party song in my opinion.
-
Whatever plays, there will be me, Naruto Uzumaki, dancing like an idiot for all to see. Sure to entertain all in some sick twisted way.

Is it wrong that I can't help staring at her boob? It looks like it's about to come out of her top... XD
-
heh
could do all the super-odd videos that people have "danced to"
so that would be "what is love" and that infamous "dragostea din tei" song... well no. Play some infected mushroom though <3

Dunno about you but that lollipop has my attention.
-
Im a guy, no more need be said.
-
I want them to play everybody dance now xD
I love that song!!
-
I ahve a ton of techno and trance, industrial etc...
and some cool technoy AMVs.
They'll be on my lappy so if it turns out yes I'll have them on hand.
-
I don't think we should put in too many song requests. Let the DJ pick the music, he is a professional after all.
As for the dance I have a bunch of random questions of my own.
So you are there to have a good time, you got your slacks, slicked back hair, black shoes. You are looking sharp and you see a lot of good looking people. A sharp pang of anxiety hits you. Now what?
Do you just kinda walk up to people and start dancing with them or do you stand around waiting for something to happen? Do you ask specific people for a dance? Do you just aim for the center of the crowd and grind against as many people as you can?
I don't know how to dance!
-
So is there going to be actual music with words? Or just techno stuff like at Sakuracon? O-o
-
We should have one of the staff walk around spraying people with a fire extinguisher full of deodorant.
yes. Yes they should. Definitely. xD
-
Is there a door fee?
-

i keep saying this
MANDATORY CHEMICAL SHOWERS.
seriously.
-
Is there a door fee?
Nope. The only thing they'll do at the door is make sure you're not bringing in inhibiting things like giant cosplay props and whatnot.
Also, if the dance room gets too full they'll probably only allow a certain amount of people in at a time. They did this at SakuraCon, so this is just an assumption.

I'm confused. Don't people take showers? How would they smell that bad? o____o;

I agree. Maybe some people just have a really strong sense of smell. Either that or they run around sniffing people.

Although some anime fans I know don't really shower much. And they do kinnda stink. XD But I don't think it's beacause they like anime that they stink. Just beacsue they're lazy, in general. Although, a lazy person's mentality could be what a lot of anime fans are? I dunno.
All I know is that...I go to the Art Institute of Portland. I'm an animation major. So I work with mostly game art majors and animation majors. And the vast majority of them are male.
And sometimes if you walk by the computer labs when an animation or game class is in session...
It kind of reeks.
It's weird.
-
the stink also happens when deodorant or whatever is used fades away over the day so people tend to smell bad in the evening.
-
Remember, folks... SHOWER. Okay? Shower! You won't meet new people who share the same interests if you smell! BATHE. Seriously, they should hand out Pikachu shaped soaps or something. Complimentary showers for everyone!
...bathe!

So is there going to be actual music with words? Or just techno stuff like at Sakuracon? O-o
I can guarantee actual words to songs, sometimes in even in Japanese. Not all the time, but a great amount of the music will have words. It’s hard to do the time warp without the cues of when to jump to the left and step to the right. There will be a mix of various genres present at the dance. Some J-pop\j rock, some anime themes, some trance anthems, some video game remixes, some syth-pop, music from DDR, a bit of industrial, a bit of class, some new favs, a smattering of beloved 80’s songs, and as I have said before chalk full of hoot, with just a little bit of nanny. And if you have a favorite song bring it up to the DJ and get them to play it for you...

“Lord of the Dance”
Or at least the manager of it.

no way hello kitty soap...
... but then i would want to steal them all and it would be kinda counterproductive...
hehehe :3

I didn't stay long at the dance last year, and I didn't go the year before,
but it's like any other dance, but 10 times better and with COOL people. 8)
-
exactly!

Confusing problems about the dance for us young-uns. On the schedule it says nothing about having to be 18 or older to stay at the dance past midnight. In the rulebook it says its cool as long as you have a guardian... So am I going to get kicked out anyway? Last year I was told it was fine, stayed until one, and then another staff member came and said it wasn't ok, so I had to leave. I just want to know what's going on. I especially want to know since there's the second dance Sunday, and I can never get enough dancing X3. If it will be 18+ it would be very helpful if the schedule said that...
I know that there was a previous post that said Kumoricon would probably follow Portland's curfew rules and such. But that's not true...
Just wondering what's going on :3?
-
@Takmai
I'm looking at my schedule and I'm not finding another dance on Sunday. I know some of us hoped for a second dance but I don't think that's going to be the case.
-
If you look at the pocket guide that's linked on the home page... There's a dance Saturday night from 8 until 2... Then there's one on Sunday night from 12 until 2. Its at the same time as the Bakazoku uncensored.
-

I spoke with Brenda at programming at the last meeting. We will have an after hours dance. It should start right after the Concert and last a couple hours.

"Between 12:00 midnight and 4:00 AM, minors age 17 and under must be accompanied by a legal or appointed guardian at all times."
"The City of Portland curfew differs slightly and is NOT enforced by Kumoricon inside the convention space."
Therefore I should be able to stay until the dances end, since I'll be with my appointed guardian. The schedule does not say 18+ for those time slots. Am I right?
-
***UPDATE*** Sunday night there will be a guest DJ from Seattle bringing her J-Pop/J-Core music down just for Kumoricon!
-
Oh wow, yet another thing to get excited about. In '04 I stayed with like fifteen other people until the thing was done (The dance floor was absolutely empty). I was sixteen then, but was wearing my Caine mask so nobody really check me (That and the Yojimbo's were trying to be nice and let us youngins have our fun). Last year I managed to stay most of the way through it by finding random people to call a guardian until I was finally told to just get out and go back to my room (lols). This year I'm 18 (!!) so I get to stay out however late I want. I wouldn't suggest the little folk bend (break) the rules as much as I did, don't want to give the volunteers a headache.
This year sounds like the dance will be the best yet. Don't worry too much about requesting, the DJs usually hit up all of the songs you want. Two songs I've had to request both times that went over well (and are essential dance songs in my book) are "Ice Ice Baby" by Ice Cube (Eat your heart out) and "Bohemian Rapsody" by Queen. Hopefully we'll get those played again this year. :)
I wore combat boots both years and that was alright. I wouldn't suggest any sort of mask or thick headware (I wore a paintball mask and my head was covered by cloth) as it will get decidedly hot. Also, capes and long gowns should be left back in the room. Ripped my cloak more than once at those dances.
About dancing: don't worry if you can't dance, I can't, it doesn't really matter. Do what's fun, no one will judge you. If you want to dance with someone, just walk up and ask if you can dance with them. Besides having a boy/girlfriend, I doubt they will turn you down. (I asked five or six pretty girls to dance last year and I was only seventeen. None turned me down.) If there's no conga line going, try to start one by asking those around you. That's how those things got going last year. Remember, it's all for fun, so don't hold back or be timid. I've seen many shy people come out of their shell on the dance floor and have a great time.
Umm... I think that should address most of the questions that were asked. Sorry for the long post, but I just want you all to have fun. :)
One last note: Don't leave stuff around in the actual dance room. I have a Seras Victoria figurine stolen last year after I hid it behind a trash can. Don't make my mistake.

Sweet deal

O.o
Are there two dances this year?
On the updated con book thing. Theres a Dance after the AMV contest Sunday and then another on Saturday after the A-Key-Kyo Concert.

Pleasseee tell me that the Guest DJ will be bringing Speed-core? Since most of it is, after all, made in Japan? And I suppose could be tossed into the J-Core catagory

Please, please let there be some anime music...
-
Well, I didn't go last year because of my lowly 13 year old-ness, I was afraid of possibly getting crushed under all the tall people. D:
But when my cousin came home from the dance she told me about it, and I was like "ksjlhgslfrfdvjh;lkdrfv I'M GOING NEXT YEAR"
And after reading this thread I'm not sure I want to. xD
If I do I'll cling to someone like I always do when I lose intrest and beg them to leave with me.
:'D
Short attention span.
Mhm.
-
I remember two years ago at SakuraCon the DJ played Rammstein's Engel.
Good times...
