Sign-ups for the karaoke contests have begun (finally) :D
The official rules for the karaoke contests and a link to the registration form are posted here (http://www.kumoricon.com/?page_id=62).
As last year, there are two contests: Kumoricon Idol and Karaoke Cosplay Hybrid. All contestants will participate in an audition round, and finalists for each contest will be selected.
Contestants are required to provide their own music.
Sign-up will remain open until August 22, or until all the pre-reg slots are filled. There will be sign-ups at the convention, but to guarantee a spot in the audition it is recommended you pre-reg: all sign-ups are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
If you have any questions, please post here or pm me.

I had a question about the idol contest. The rules state that you cannot clip/cut/edit any music, but there's my problem. The song I want to sing doesn't have an instrumental, however there is another version of the song that was extended that did have an instrumental. But the extended version is different and I only know the short version. The longer version is also over time limit. Is it okay if I fade out the song after where I'd finish singing?
-
PM me with the name and artist/anime of the song, and I will take a look at it. Songs that exceed the time limit will be faded out, or you can indicate when you would like the song to be faded.
-
is it ok to sing in the hybrid contest even if i dont have a group?
-
Is there such a thing as too short of a song?
The full length of my song is 4:47 but then the short version is only like 1:27.... O.O
-
On that note... what if we only know the TV versions of our song.... i.e. don't have a longer verions for the finals
-
Another question. Since it is Karaoke, is memorization nessicary. I'd feel I could do my best with the japanese song I don't know and all that jazz if I could referance some source of lyrics. Is this possible?
-
Kairi - you don't have to be in a group to be in the Hybrid contest, it's just that groups can't compete in the Idol contest.
Kimiski - there isn't a minimum time length.
DL Kassendra - the longer the song, the more time you have to wow the judges, but there isn't a penalty for a shorter song. And you are allowed to use lyric sheets during the contest, but you will need to provide them.
-
I sent you a PM and haven't gotten a reply yet, how much longer should I wait?
-
Yukimizu - sorry, needed to do a little research. PM sent :)
-
I have a new question.
What is the best/proper way to hold the microphone, so in order to get the best sound?
-
For my audition song, can I use the one I competed with last year? Also...is it ok to enter with the song I auditioned with last year?
-
Yukimizu - you need to hold the microphone close enough that we can hear you clearly. Your best bet is to come early and warm up, so you can get a feel for what will work best for you.
Blackjack - for this year, yes you can use the same songs from last year.

Sorry if this was answered already somewhere else on the forums:
Is the online karaoke registration filled up already? I've noticed that the form is in .doc format, so if there's still room to register online for the contest, do I e-mail a filled out .doc back?
-
Also, it says that on the form, we have to put our Badge #. Where can we find this? I'm gonna send my registration in, but send my Badge # later once I get it. Is that okay?
-
Online registration is not filled up, so just e-mail the .doc reg form to karaoke@kumoricon.org.
Don't worry about filling in the badge numers - we will take care of it at the auditions, once we have the badge numbers :).

I sent my form in a few days ago, and haven't gotten a reply. How do I know if I made it or not? ^^;
Oh, oh, one more thing. After tinkering with vocal dampening, I wanted to change one of my songs (doesn't work too well being stripped like that). -If- I have been accepted into the contest, how do I go about changing my song selection, and when can I do this?
And I have to say, thanks for hanging around this thread and answering everyone's questions.
-
I have a question..
For the signups, where you find the registration form, is that the one you can email as well? I wasn't sure if there was another one. If not, I have another question.
How do you know what your badge number is? It asks in the signup sheet and I want to know where I can find my badge number...
EDIT
Nevermind about the badge number thing. I didn;t read all the posts. ^^;
-
The registration form is linked where the rules are posted. Just fill out that form and e-mail it to karaoke@kumoricon.org (be sure to attach the .doc to the e-mail.)
I am a little behind in letting people know I received their registration forms (sorry :( ), and will be notifying people in the next couple of days. If you haven't received a confirmation by this weekend, PM me so we can figure it out.
Thanks for being patient.
Almost forgot... you can change your song selection up until you sign in for the audtions, so you aren't locked in to your selections until then. Just let us know when you sign in.

Great, thank you for the response. I just wasn't sure how long it'd take to find out. ^_^

Question for Fliks! Do fliks have to be parodies of Japanese/Anime/Video Game songs, or can they be American songs too?
-
I've got a problem. There is only one version of the song I want to sing, so does anyone know of a home program that I can use to dampen out the voice so I can see if it sounds ok.

I had the same problem. I did manage to find a program with instructions on how to strip vocals, though there's no guarantee it'll be the same way they do it at the con. The software is freeware, called Audacity.
The instructions to strip vocals are here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq?s=editing&i=remove-vocals
You may find the song sounds terrible stripping vocals in this method, so don't get too attatched; you may want to try another song if this is the case. From what I've noticed, the song has to be relatively new for the tracks to be set up correctly for being stripped. The album I'm taking a song from came out in 2004, I believe, and nothing from the same band older than that sounded very good stripped.
Good luck!

Freya - filks can be American songs, they just need to parody an anime or game.
Cheesethrower - a couple of other options for removing the vocals are the DeFX (http://ancelot.8k.com/DeFX.htm) or the vocal remover (http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=54368) plug-ins for WinAmp. You can play with these to get a feel for how your song will sound.

Today is the last day for online pre-reg for the karaoke contests, so be sure to get your reg forms in. There are a few spots left open. After today, you will have to sign-up at the convention for the auditions.
I will be posting more info on the auditions later this week, so keep an eye for updates. :D

SephiChan, Jamiche: You both are awesome. Thanks for the help. I think I've got near what I was looking for, though with my wonderful change of preference I'll probably change it at the last second. Thanks much for the help. You both win two free internets. :3

Yay! :3
I don't need praise; I was in your position before, so I did an extensive search, and found the information about Audacity on another con's forums. Glad you've got what you needed.

Pre-reg for the karaoke contests are now closed. A new thread will be started by the end of the week with the audition list and times.
If you are interested in the contests but missed out on the pre-reg, we will be taking sign-ups before the auditions. More info will be posted in the other thread as well.
