Title: Koto player in Portland?
Post by: nonomi_ikari on May 01, 2006, 12:14:15 pm
When we were doing our whole Japanese Festival thingy here in Boise, there was a Koto player from over there in Portland? If we can, we should try to get her to come to KumoriCon and play for us as a small concert thing! ^^

She was really good and it was really awesome! It gave me goosebumps and shudders. I'll never forget it and I think it'll be a rather good thing for the con.

What do you all think?

I plotted out a comic book called Taiko Chicks who fight evil doers by beating them with drum sticks would Koto chick be an ally or an enemy

If memory serves me well, a koto is a long Japanese string instrument (I'd say about 6 feet long) that rests on the floor.  The musician sits behind it, adjusts the string holders (don't know the actual name) on it, and plays it using the picks on the player's hands.

This is Mahou Sensei Negima, class dismissed.

A Koto is a japanese harp...

Anyway...Boise has a Taiko group, and the people are really nice. (The ones I met, at least. o_O; ) I think both, or one or the other would be good experience.

koto is actually one of the most mesmerizing instruments in the world.

one of the all time most transcendant moments of my life was attending a concert by a EUGENE koto player from japan, as she just exuded mourning for those martyred by the bombings of hiroshima and nagasaki, at the commemoration thereof in eugene last summer. truly amazing.

wow, imagine a duet!

I really hate to describe it this way, but if you have seen kung fu hustle then youve seen a koto. Its the instrument those two guys used to throw swords at the "heros". And from what Ive seen, its more of an asian piano than a harp.

Actually, the koto is smaller and doesn't sound as rich, but pretty close. We had to study instruments in my Japanese class...For extra-credit, and I'm an EC whore. o.o
