Title: SILENT HILL, Premieres April 21st
Post by: TomtheFanboy on April 12, 2006, 10:42:11 am
So I know that we've got some members of the Survival Horror Society on the boards here, plus it's a movie based on a great video game.

Anybody going to go see it this weekend? I have Friday off so i'm trying to get a group together to go see it. Any takers?

I'm going to be posting on Livejournal as soon as I get home as well, just in case I missed some of you SH fans.

I had barely heard of the video game but I want to see it because it has Zombies, who don’t love a movie with Zombies.  I have a script I’m working on about sorority girls and Zombies (but the nerdy girl saves the day) I hope to direct in 5 years.

They're not quite zombies...>>;;; They're more like humans deformed into ebil demon thingies.

Anyhoo...[I just turned my head to fast and almost got my ear ripped off by a pair of headphones...T_T god that hurt.]  I saw the ad for it when I went to see When A Stranger Calls...Another good movie, but hey, It was uber awesome. The movie would have scared me if I had not been so dang excited about SH becoming a movie. It's my fave game and I am SOOOOOOOOOOO gonna go see it in theaters on the day it comes out! ^^ ~dances around~ There's a few things that I'm going to have issues with it...with...The main char was replaced with a chick because they wanted her to look vulnerable, and the whole "Lots of survivors in the town" Thing...-_-;;;; Grrr That's just two of them...

I dont see ebil demons in the monster maual

and in my movie They're not quite zombies either.  they are evil sprits summoned to a party with a Ouji board and they enter the bodies from a neabry graveyard

I keep hearing good things about Silent Hill.  I keep thinking about buying or at least renting the game but I haven't yet.  Being someone who only knows that it is a horror game with zombies and other things in it, can someone describe what the game is like?

Does Advent Children count?

To try and actually be a HELPFUL person, I will explain Silent Hill.

The original silent hill video game for Playstation was the story of a man who got in a car wreck and lost his daughter in the mysterious town of Silent Hill. He must delve deep into the horrific mysteries of this town to find not just his daughter, but ther truth behind waht is going on. He will have to not only travel through the foggy town filled with strange creatures, but also a darker world, a nightmarish reflection of our own.

The game has a variety of monsters in it and only a few can really be classified as zombies. they're just nightmare creatures for the most part. The most clear monsters are actually in Silent Hill 4 and I can say for a fact that they are GHOSTS.

I'm not going to say more to avoid spoilers but if you want to know more you can always delve into wiki, or ask Vincent to explain. *snicker*

BTW, I can help people get in to see the movie if they can cover their ticket. I want as many people as possible at this event. who's up for Friday night? I know MissLegato is seeing it with her boy, perhaps at the very least we could arrange a double date? PM me!

Actually, I'll probably watch it Sunday on a matinee.

Unbelievable.  I went to the mall earlier today, looked in the game story, and noticed there weren't any copies of SH in the used section.  The optimist in me is saying that's because no one wanted to sell their used copies.

The search continues.

Hate to break it to you but it is nearly impossible to find a used copy of SH1 ANYWHERE.  I searched for about 2 years and when my bro finally found HIS copy . . . I found ONE at Vancouver Mall ina  game store.

Get yourself on a waiting list with as many game stores as you can!  If you're lucky one might pop up.

If you want to see Pyramid head, though, buy Silent Hill 2 (get teh Greatest Hits version because it has all the REALLY good content, extra endings, an extra scenario, etc.)

Silent Hill 1 and 3 are linked together very closely, some suggest to play them 1. then 3, then 2 and finally 4.  As four has a relation to pretty much ALL the games.  Also, you get all sorts of funny jokes if you have like, a Silent Hill 2 save when you play the third game.  And Henry will say something you'll only understand if you've played the second game . .

and I'm rambling, but I'm super-hardcore addicted to these gaaaames!  T_T

Title: A review
Post by: Antares on April 23, 2006, 10:23:11 pm
First off - if you have never played any Silent Hill games, and you wanna be scared poopless, get SH3 (warning- rated M for a reason). The game gives you enough backstory for it to make sense w/o having played 1. I hear they are re-releasing 1 with a female protagonist to coincide with the movie, which should help those who have not been able to find the old PS1 game.

Okay - on with the review. I tried not to have any spoilers, but just to be safe, don't read if you don't want to know anything about the movie, okay?

Sharon, a little girl prone to seizures in which she chokes out the words "Silent Hill", is taken by her mother to said ghost town against the wishes of her father. After they literally crash into town (a very finely executed scene), Sharon disappears, and her mother Rose sets off in search of her.

If you have played any of the games, be ready for the first hour to experience true heady bliss. The cinematography is superb - you feel as if you are playing the game on the big screen. There are some minor plot malfunctions, but the visuals make up for it, and you truly do want to keep watching (the cop, Cybil, is great fun.)

However, things start to falter in hour two, when it seems as if the script is missing about 30 pages. This gap is filled by a convoluted flashback / narrative sequence which serves to confuse newcomers and alienate those familiar with the story. Not that the movie makers shouldn't have taken liberties with the plot to make it more manageable in a cinematic sense, but the way that they determined to change it does not necessarily make it any better a story.

To me, the special effects were more hits than misses - some were wonderful. The blade scenes of Pyramidhead brought cheers from the theater filled with obvious fans. But another scene looked rubbery and fake (most of the effects were computer generated). The climax was interesting enough but the movie then stumbles to what I felt was a predictable and unsatisfying ending.

My rating? B-

Next up - Fatal Frame the Movie???

i honestly don't know HOW that happened . . . I edited the post and for some reason an extra one showed up 0_0  eerie . . .

The movie ROCKED SO HARD,  And I was hugely skeptical about it.

Antares, I disagree that someone should start with 3.  They're gonna miss out on a LOT without knowing 1.  You can't understand Heather and what's going one without the backstory.

I think 1 scared me more than the others.  And Pyramid Head *shudders*

The movie . . . I was really very happy with it other than a few minor things.  Plus I think the ending was done to ensure SEQUEL.  Either that or DVD extras will be the alternate endings :3

I'm a very happy Demon Nurse.

Aw man, I'm looking at the review of SH in the newspaper (RegGuard) right now.  Looks like Roger Ebert didn't like it very much (1 1/2 stars).

Well I'm going to take your guys' word over his and still watch it.

How do you think video games like Silent Hill (or in fact, any game) work as movies? Does it help or hinder the popularity of the game,  or does it not make a difference?

It's funny, I find myself citing Kotaku.com twice in about 15 seconds. They had an article up about the huge difference in reader review scores and professional critics' scores for Silent Hill. Massively panned by the critics, but high scores by the viewers. I suppose one would have to account for factors favorable to those high scores, such as people who didn't like the movie being unlikely to vote, or something like that.

Saw it. Liked it for the most part. Awkward dialouge in some scenes made me cringe.

And the dialog in the game didn't?

"What is a wheelchair doing here??"

(not, "what are all these dead and mutilated half-human monsters doing here?")

Radio.
What's going on with that radio?

Yeah, the first game's dialog was pretty rough (what the hell is gyromancy?) but I don't think it was that bad for its time. The sequels got WAY better after all.

I've heard complaints about how the storyline was "all explained in a neat bundle of exposition" but I thought that a lot of the stuff, like good old Pyramid Head, was still just as weird and unexplained as it needed to be.

Still the best video game movie ever.

It just felt like they thought their audience would be dumb.

"What room number did you get this paper out of?"
"Room 111."
"We're going to room 111."

I'd jus tlike to say I HIGHLY doubt Ebert is a gamer.  Therefore it was probably WAY too over is head.  It was probably a big "WTF is going on, this sucks!" for someone that doesn't "get it," ya know?

Game movies in general - take them out of context with the game (i.e. Resident Evil) or they SUCK.
Bad game movies:
- Mortal Kombat II
- Street Fighter

Silent Hill? OWNED ME.

I went to see it the day it came out. I really liked it. I cant play those kinds of games (hee hee I get afraid and hide in the corner) but I really like watching someone play them.

My boyfriend plays Silent Hill (s) and he was really impressed with the movie. and I am going to buy it the day it comes out in stores!!

Yeah, that's the kind of tone I got after reading his review.  He described stuff that, as a gamer, made sense to me.

And good news.  I found a used copy of SH 3.  I'm going to try it out later tonight (if I get some work done first).

Street Fighter is so bad that it's become a guilty pleasure :P

But the best gaming movie title is still claimed by Mario Bros. ;)
