Title: Question about Kimonos
Post by: BigGuy on November 04, 2005, 11:55:44 am
Do the womens kimonos only have the long rectangle type sleeves? Or do both men and women wear them with those type of sleeves.

I found some Pink flowery curtians mixed in with a big lot of sheets and cloth I picked up, I knew no one would want a Pink Flowery Jedi Robe or hobbit cape, I can make a Kimono for one of the Von Trapps

Both men and women's kimonos can have them. It depends on what social class you are representing and in what sort of situation.

http://www.geocities.com/anne_liese_w/Japanese/japoutfits.htm will give you a chart with links to some traditional japanese kimono styles worn by the different social classes. The fewer the layers, the lower the class.  Peasants wore the most simple ones with the smallest sleeve length, and I think the only ones that were close to form fitting were yakamas.

Some examples of male anime characters with long, loose-fitting sleeves:

And historical as well (as you can see length of sleeve was pretty long for men depending on the time period):

Got a site with some men's kimonos laid out flat so you can see the dimensions. The "long, square" part of the sleeve is about 50-51 cm long.

Some pictures of modern day men wearing modern kimono:

I also found a rental site (much like our Tuxedo rental places) to give you an idea of what's the style for special occacions. Looks like Happi Coats and Hakama are "in" LOL:

in my head those are short.  i was thinking of those ones that the sleeves, when laid out flat, basically make the kimono look like one big square.  like...they go all the way down to the hem.

Hey Big Guy   I just dug around in my crates of cloth.  I found the pink flowery stuff. Once you pick out a hem  It's 3 pieces 100 inches long by 35 wide and one about 50 inches long and 35 wide.

You can have first dibs just dont tell any of the cosplay girls I'll have a 300 Sq foot sewing room when I finish the remodel of my shop

Great, were gonna start work on the remodel sunday, as you claim to be a big guy you can luft the main brace (25 foot long 2' x 12') while I supervise and Mr Scott has a brew.  If any hells angles stop buy, dont look them in the eye and stay calm if firearms are drawn.  If some ones yells "8 point saber drill"  i'd sujest being the closest to the golf bag to pick your blade

Great then you can use the Foil with the safe rubber tip and I can choose a saber, long sword or Ninja-To.   There is only one Chianmail shirt and one kevlar vest but you can pick between 2 college fencing helmets and 3 german helmets or a zoro hat

But it's fun like painting fences
