I missed out on 2014 kumo, but I really am planning on going 2015!! these are the cosplays I have planned
Day 0:KarKat
Day 1:Ponyo
Day 2:Matt Miller
Day 3: Sylveon
Day 4:Shippo
Are any of these so out dated nobody would know what I'm even cosplaying?

The Homestuck (I'm guessing that's what they first one is becasue I only heard that name within that series) and the Pokemon one are the only 2 I have ever even heard of. Really popular right now are:
-Attack On Titan (STILL super popular)
-Sword Art Online (mostly season 2 right now since it's still running, but both seasons are still popular)
-Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are still quite popular, being in both of these fandom I can say this a little more than some others might think..
-Vocaloid will probably never die out.
-Adventure time is still up there too
-ANYTHING from the SuperWhoLock fandom (Supernatural, Dr. Who, and Sherlock)
So far these are the ones I'd say are really high up there.

I don't think any of these are outdated. I know them all at least. You especially shouldn't have any trouble with people recognizing Ponyo, Sylveon or Shippo, the series they're from all have ridiculously huge fandoms. In fact I think you'd be hard pressed to find more than a few people who don't recognize Ponyo with how popular Studio Ghibli films are.
