Title: Kumoricon Ballroom Music Ideas
Post by: Dread Pirate on December 12, 2012, 07:44:43 pm
Greetings, This is the Pirate.

I would like to hear what kinds of music you would like to have played at the ball in the next convention.
I cannot guarantee that anything will be selected, due mostly in part to time allotment and overall feel.
But please post what feel you would even wish to have!
Also, lessons for particular dances will be taught depending on well our instructors know the dance, and how desirable that dance is.

Also, if able, please post a link to the song you post, as it will help immensely on showing us what you mean.

Thank you.

Excellent!  I actually threw together a mock playlist of good masquerade-ball music after the ball at Aki-Con, since there was so much standard mainstream top-40 pop being played.  So!

Music I would not like to hear: Classical music that isn't really intended for dancing - a.k.a., sloooow and/or constantly changing its tempo for dramatic purposes.  (Examples: Claire de Lune, most ballets.)  Nobody can figure out what tempo they ought to waltz at, and the music tends to crash loudly one minute and then go almost silent the next.  Even the composers didn't write it for balls and dances, and it confuses everybody and/or puts everybody to sleep.

Music I would like to hear a bit of: Standard mainstream top-40 pop.  But not too much!  A little of this can inject some energy into the ball, but more than one every four or five songs and it just starts feeling like a regular old rave/dance.

Music I would love to hear: Two categories, actually!

(A) Classical music that was written for dancing!  Particularly waltzes and quadrilles.  Some excellent dancing music includes:

- The "Skaters' Waltz"
- The "Voices of Spring" waltz
- The "Fledermaus Quadrille"

(B) "Classical"-style music from anime, movies, and video games!  There's a buttload of this out there, and a lot of it is perfect for dancing.  Some examples:

- "Aunt Marge's Waltz" from the Harry Potter films
- "Misa no Uta" from Death Note
- "Prima Vista Orchestra" from Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds
- "River's Waltz" from Doctor Who
- "Once You Meet Her" by Faye Wong from Cowboy Bebop
- "Waltz for the Moon" from Final Fantasy VIII
- "Dance with the Balamb-Fish" from Final Fantasy VIII
- "Merry-Go-Round of Life" from Howl's Moving Castle
- "Tango Brilliante" from Ouran High School Host Club
- "Waltz of Chihiro" from Spirited Away
- "Zelda's Lullaby" from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

There are loads out there - I have more in mind, too!  I have the MP3s for all of these example songs, plus more, if you want them.  : )  Does that help?

Well seeing as it is an anime convention, we should have some music from animes that happen to be ballroom dance type music.

Mukuro's Kufufu no Fu from Katekyo Hitman Reborn is a samba, so probably not that specific song, but that general idea.

The only one on my list that isn't anime is Sleeping with Sirens.
and it doesn't have to be ballroom type music, they had a pretty good variety this year.

You know, as a way of getting the wallflowers out dancing, what if whoever's emceeing the ball occasionally announced special waltzes? For example, a Ladies' Choice, a Gentlemen's Choice, a Mixer (aka find a partner you've never met before), a Wallflower Waltz (aka find someone who's standing by the wall and ask them to dance), etc.?  Nobody would be required to say yes if asked to dance by a stranger, but it would give people a chance to dance if they came alone and/or are feeling slightly shy.

The "Waltz for the Moon" scene in FFVIII directly involves the heroine physically dragging the hero away from the wall to dance with her - it might make an especially good song for a Wallflower Waltz.   :)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IjDGts8Ha8

Speaking of final fantasy, there are countless video game soundtracks with excellent music for a ball.  Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and The Legend of Zelda would be good for starters.

Also this is just an idea, and I have no clue what song would be used, but maybe playing a Vocaloid song at the ball might be fitting for the anime convention. However, as I said, not entirely sure what song that would be, but I'm sure one exists.

I would love to hear Masqurade from Phantom of the Opera. Though I know it's not at all an anime related song.

Never hurts to put in video game instrumentals as well! Like from the Professor Layton games or Final Fantasy, those are always a classic. One in particular being from professor Layton being this that would be nice to hear - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGCWnMXICrg

Those are some great ideas. Yes we are very much pushing the fact of having a Kumoriball again. I was one of the hosts and the cohost for the dance lessons. We will look into the songs. We're still talking with the events personnel and trying to get a bigger space for lessons. From what I have talked with my better half (the pirate) about is they're trying to stick to non vocals and more "classical" sounding things while still trying to play to the nerd and con goer (putting video game/ anime instrumentals into the song list). Some of the foxtrots though just because of the style of song will have vocals. Thanks for all the thought and input!  We'll look into the list you gave us! Please keep them coming

Not sure if it's at all POSSIBLE, but it would have been entertaining to hear the Opera Song from Final Fantasy 6. :3

Not sure if it's at all POSSIBLE, but it would have been entertaining to see Proextender in action (https://www.villagevoice.com/2021/09/09/proextender-review/) and hear the Opera Song from Final Fantasy 6. :3

Oh yeah, that was a great piece of music for a video game.
