Title: A question regarding games on PC's
Post by: Washougal_Otaku on July 17, 2012, 03:22:54 pm
I have recently picked up a new(-ish) laptop that is amazing for gaming purposes.  *insert hand clapping*  There is a game that I've found that I can download that, to my knowledge, was only available for the X-BOX.  With that in mind, there are some older games that I've always wanted to play that were ONLY available for the PC that I'd also like to have on here.

Here's my question: is there a specific type of controller that I need to purchase for each, or can I use a "generic" controller that will cover all of my gaming needs?  (I know that I can use my keyboard instead, but if I can get a controller, I'd rather do that).

Yes, this is completely possible. In my experience most games simply take re-mapping the keybindings to your controller. If need be you can always have your controller simulate the keys on your keyboard.

I use a controller like this one (mine is an older model). The software that came with it lets me map macros or any set of keyboard commands to any button. I had it for like six years and it still works great. Even after many rage-inducing moments ;)

...I'm not sure if I understood the details of what you said, but I can at least tell that it should be good. Thanks.

Most PC games/emulators have something that looks kinda like this:

This link one is from an SNES emulator. (http://gameornot.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Screenshot-ZSNES.png)
This link is a more generic one. (http://www.atariage.com/Jaguar/emulation/tempest_tutorial/IMG08.png)

Each screenshot is a keybind list. If you controller is working right, you can change the keyboard keys (Q,V,F1,escape,tab,etc.) to buttons on your controller(joypad up, button 1, left trigger, etc.) just like changing from one keyboard key to another.

So, kinda like adjusting button commands in fighting games, like: changing X & Y as punches to Y & B to punches?
