VERY, VERY IMPORTANT EDIT!!!
Everyone should also know that I submitted an event application to Kumoricon to make this official. It has been approved, and the unofficial "gijinka battles" is now an official upcoming event, titled "LARP Pokemon battle tournament."
Hello, all you cosplayers!
Last year, an unofficial activity was organised on these forums, and held at Kumoricon, called the gijinka battles. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, gijinka is the human form of a pokemon, or other non-human species. A gijinka battle is basically a real-life Pokemon battle, using the magic of cosplay... or in other words, LARPing (Live Action Role Playing).
The gijinka battles are making a return in Kumoricon 2012! If you are interested in participating, as admin (overall organizer), battle referee, trainer or Pokemon (a substantial amount of the last one is CRUCIAL) feel free to use this topic to announce/discuss it.
THE RULES
1. The layout of the battle will mimic that of one in the anime/video games. trainers will be on opposite sides of the field, with their Pokemon in front of them, while a referee stands to the side.
2. Each trainer will work with any three cosplayers. trainers are not required to cosplay.
3. Battles will be turn based, like in the video games. The outcome of a match (meaning who "faints") is decided by rock-paper-scissors by the trainers. This does not have to be done at the beginning of the match, but it still is the deciding factor of winning.
4. If it is against Kumoricon rules, it is against gijinka battle rules. This includes dangerous rough housing! Contact-based moves must have the permission of the opponent beforehand. Also, keep in mind that to break/tear/ruin someones cosplay means to be a jerk. Jerks are thrown out of gijinka battles.
5. Remember, this is for fun! If you get too caught up in winning, chances are you've stopped having fun.
About the dress code:
If you would like to participate in the gijinka battles, but are cosplaying something/someone else, don't sweat the small stuff. For example, you could cosplaying, oh, how about Zelda; and your friend is cosplaying Mario. Both of you could still participate. Any cosplay is fair game for this event.
Mario used Leer!
Zelda used Doubleslap!
Mario used Fire Flower!
Mario became a fire type!
Zelda used Din's Fire!
It's not very effective...
TIME, DATE LOCATION:
Day 1 (Saturday)
10:30am to 1:30pm
Panel 3 (Heritage E) of the Hilton

i would love to participate but i cant with how massive i will be but i look forward to seeing it
-
i wanna be a furret :D
-
i wanna be a furret :D
You would like to but haven't made the cosplay? or you, for certain, are cosplaying as Furret during Kumoricon?
*General announcement time!*
If you post that you are interested, that you would like to go, that's fine. I won't add anyone to the roster until they post that they will go, though.
*General announcement time over*
Sorry about that lecture Titus, I had to get that out there somehow. It's not only you, that was directed at EVERYBODY reading this. :P

I ask this because I will be heavily depending on everyone who says they are participating, to do so. If someone volunteers to this activity, but then backs out.... it's like having an cosplayer in the skit contest do the same. I don't mean to sound so drama-heavy, but anyone who is put on the roster will be committed to show up, so it would be appreciated that if you volunteer, you've at least started work on the cosplay. To sum things up, this topic is directed at those who have already decided who/what they are going as for Kumoricon 2012. If you are still deciding, this is the topic you want:

I am deffenatly cosplaying a furret i haev the costume
-
^Titus, you have been added!
Oh, and to everyone wondering why Titus's quote and my post are different, it's because I realized I was being WAY too drama-heavy. I modified it so that I wouldn't sound like an uptight jerk, no one wants to cosplay with one of those!
-
yay
-
You can put me down as any pokemon when i decide which one im doing. I cant decide lol but i was a ref this year, so i can be one again if you need one at any time.
-
^Tala, you are now an official referee!
-
Woo! Im also doing either cubchoo or banette, so you can put me down as a pokemon too
-
Alright so! change of plans.
My boyfriend has decided that instead of being my Beartic, he doesnt want to be a pokemon. Sooooo He is going to be a Ref, and I am going to be Cubchoo for sure.
And he refuses to get a profile on here, so if you just wanna put Tala's boyfriend, that works. But! Its official, he will be a ref cuz he doesnt wanna be a pokemon with me.
-
^Tala, I have altered the first post accordingly. Oh, and I apologize for taking soooo long!
:P

Well, I'm planning to make it to the con this year, and I'll definitely bring my Vaporeon. Only thing I'm worried about is money for the ticket. However, what exactly is required of a pokemon? Cause i'm really shy and idk if I'd be able to improv and stuff like needed :x

No problem. As a Pokemon, the only thing required of you is to act out doing whatever attack your trainer says, and pretend to take a hit when given. You can be as elaborate or minimal as you want. There isn't likely to be a lot of analytic spectators either, the attendees there will probably be involved in their own gijinka battles - you can rest easy.
-
changing im not gonna be furret i m gonna be vulpix with my nine tails and then my girlfriend is being furret
-
I'm going to be umbreon! Uh, it's not a gijinka so I hope that's ok...
-
@hyperkineticenergy: not a gijinka? Not a problem! This is for Pokemon cosplay in general.
-
Can I be a in this event? I will be a Zoroark dressed in a fursuit, not a gijinka. Is that OK?

You should have thought before saying that... you'll never get away now, MUAHAHAHA!!
Um, what I meant to say is that of course you can come and participate! At this point You don't even have to be cosplaying a pokemon to participate; you just have to be willing to adhere to the rules of Pokemon battling.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT TIME

Just like the example above, any cosplay is fair game for this, STARTING RIGHT NOW. I realized that limiting attendance to Pokemon cosplayers would be mean to those who won't be cosplaying a pokemon, but still want to join in on the fun.
END PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT TIME
I also added this announcement to the first post.
-
Sweet that's awesome! I'm also doing Leeron from Gurren Lagann.
-
Whoops I'm going to be Umbreon instead of Zoroark due to stress from school, money and skill and time it would take to make a fursuit. Though I changed it for personal matters I'm sure it doesn't matter for you except for knowing who am I.
-
UGH! I wish I were able to get my Flygon or Glalie gijinkas done for Kumo this year. This sounds so fun!
-
Pixie, maybe we should make the battles on day one and two. I know that several people won't be in their gijinka cosplay on day one, and it would be unfair to them to just have the battles day one when the majority of people will be dressed in their cosplay on day two.
-
You have a good point there, Tala, and I do believe I will take your advice.
I modified the opening post. The gijinka battles are now days one and two.
-
Thank you ^-^
-
can I go as a gijinka of Galvantula?
-
can I go as a gijinka of Galvantula?
You don't need permission, go for it!
In fact, this inspires me to make another announcement.
Useful things to know when deciding whether or not to attend the gijinka battles
1) This is NOT an invitation-only event, so RSVPing is NOT required. If you want to come, just show up, you're golden.
2) There is no "dress code" (more like "cosplay code," actually). While Pokemon may be the theme, ALL cosplayers, not just pokemon gijinka ones, are welcomed, as well as non cosplayers.
In short, no one needs permission to come, nor do they need permission for their cosplay. Just announce what you will cosplay, announce it to the world!!
I hope that clears up any misunderstandings.
-
I might be able to bring my Pichu outfit for this. :3 (or maybe some other pokemon. xD)
-
I will be there! I'm thinking either my Pikachu or Fluttershy cosplay (since my Pikachu is pretty much just for the raves)
EDIT: My friend just notified me that I have the perfect wig and shoes for Gardevoir... Pinup Gardevoir that is. So I'll be Pinup Gardevoir at some point!
-
If I dont go as galvantula, I will be Ingo, who is the subway boss.
-
This is great! I'm going to both photoshoots and one day I'm going as Rival Silver and the next I'm going as a Ampharos gijinka! :D This would be so fun, I'd totally be for it!

Rival Silver? As in THE Rival Silver, the last rival to acually make me say, "AAAAH! NO NOT HIM, ANYONE BUT HIM!" with copious amounts of interjecting expletives every time he comes on screen?
You just earned yourself a stal- *ahem* new companion!
I swear, Game Freak doesn't make rivals like they used to. Silver actually made me afraid. Every rival after Silver? I just laugh and get my rape face on.
-
changing from a gijinka to a trainer. The subway boss Ingo!
-
ooops. dubble post. ;w; sorry
-

What inspired the switch? Tell meeeeeeeeeeeeee. (I'm such a poke-at-people's-business person!)

Well, I all ready have most of Ingo done. And I am super tight on money so I dropped Galvantula. While Galvantula is my fav pokemon. I love Ingo way to much to not cosplay him. I am trying to do every thing in my power to cosplay him this year.
I was gonna have a Emmet go with my Ingo, but she can't this year.
-
Just read the new rules about other cosplays being able to participate.
I can just see it now...Luigi used Fire Blast!
Super Saiyan 4 Goku used...Tail Whip.
______'s Defense greatly fell!
-
I'm willing to bring Umbreon ( he's customized just a bit. Has a red "J" across his chest)!
-

What does the "J" stand for?
-
the "J" stands for Jay which is the name I like to go by with people I don't really know. Like, online :) It's a username I guess you could say.
-
I would love to participate in the pokemon battles again. I will be going as umberon again. My sister is going as Blitzle from black and white will also like to participate. I am so excited. K-con feels like it is just around the corner.
-
The first post has been edited, to reflect the news that this is now AN OFFICIAL EVENT! To avoid confusion among the uninitiated, the event name (the one that will show up in the programming guide) has been changed to "LARP Pokemon Battle Tournament." The topic name will be changed to reflect this.
-

-

-
Can MissingNo play too?
Yes, MissingNo can play. Go easy on us with the whole "fatally glitching save files" thing, okay? *Laughs* I know its a natural part of what you are, but you must resist your dark urges!
You did get the memo that any cosplay can be a Pokemon, right?
I look forward to seeing your awesome cosplay in action.

But it's hard to control my glitching abilities!
Yeah, but I am cosplaying from Pokemon so I thought it would be fun!
Thanks!

Is it too late?? I'm going to be a Pichu, and would love to join!!

Too late? ??? This isn't some 'apply in advance' thing, this topic is only for discussing the event. Anyone who wants to participate can do so by signing up at the event itself, it doesn't even matter what their cosplay is ;).
(The LARP Pokemon Battle Tournament will be held from 11:30am to 1:30pm, in Panel 3, also called Heritage E. Heritage E is right next to the main events room, where the opening ceremonies, among others, will be held)
Just wanted to put this out there: I am SO lucky to get that particular timeslot, in that particular panelspace. It starts half an hour after the opening ceremonies end, and that's when everyone is scouring their programming guides; both for what to next, and what they want to do during the Kumoricon weekend in general. The Pokemon LARP is going to be one of the first things they see, starting the soonest. It would be RIGHT NEXT to the room they just came out of, so it's super convenient - by time and travel standards. Victory for PIXIE!!!
-
we have more to the gange we got a pokemon trainer with us and furret and pikachu
