Looks like Wonder Northwest is making a return. Nothing much on their site yet. I defiantly marking my calendar.
Wonder Northwest 2012
May 26th & 27th, 2012
http://www.wondernorthwest.com/
-
umm srry but what is that
-
Wonder NW was alright, but it seemed a bit cramped to me. The smaller amount of people was nice, but it needs a more open location, IMO.
-
Damn...It's later this time....I can't since I'm going to Fanime instead...
-
Maydrock; it's a small convention in Portland, last year's was the first one. It's sort of a general geek convention.
I'm actually really excited about this! I had fun there last year, and it was nice to have a smaller con not long after Sakuracon to combat that awful post-con depression. :P
-
I went last year and had a good deal of fun for a small, new con. However, that weekend is reserved on my calendar for Anime Oasis. I know it's also the same time as Fanime. So I say if you can't make it to one of those then head to it.
-
YAYAYYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAAYAYYAYAYAYYAYAYES!
it was fun for me
just to see people and hang out
and Rock Band ROCKED!
-
ill be going maybe i might kidnap the children with me agian
-
I had alot of fun last year, so I will most likely go again~
-
This sounds great! I don't have any friends that cosplay really so this seems like a good opportunity to make some.
-
Okay I'm a little out of the loop. What is Wonder Northwest?
-
It's a super small nerd con, last year it was very chill and super fun
Also I am aiming to make a She-Ra costume for this,

She-Ra!?! BAGS!!!! There's a name I haven't heard in forever. But how could you know about She-Ra she was on when I was a kid back in the 80's? Bring back Filmation!

It's on T.V. late at night, and I had a She-Ra book when I was little that I loved.

Looking forward to seeing your She-Ra! Make sure you take a picture next to one of our Hordak banners!
Yes, we're going to be back again this year. Memorial Day weekend, May 26th & 27th. Our website is getting bigger by the day, so definitely check there for information. We also update our Facebook page regularly with photos and videos of panels from last year.
This year, we're looking to reach out to Anime and Manga fans more, while still keeping our general Pop-Culture focus. You guys are a huge part of the pop-culture movement and nerd scene, and shouldn't be left out! As I write this, I'm working to get some Anime/Manga vendors for you all to enjoy.
Also, I'm really stoked to see those Homestuck cosplays!
If you have any questions, ask away! We're busy getting things running, but will try our best to keep an eye on this thread.
Keep an eye out for us at SakuraCon. A group of our cosplaying staffers will be there, and are more than willing to answer any of your questions. At least one of them will be carrying around a red Wonder Northwest bag from last year, and they'll be cosplaying Assassin's Creed, Homestuck, and Inception (yes, the movie).
-
Also I am aiming to make a She-Ra costume for this,
I think I remember hearing you say something about this once...
I've thought about going to this con before. Last year, I was a temp adviser for the gaming club at my college, and we talked about going to the debut con, but nobody was really motivated enough to do the paperwork (which is kind of the norm for them, unfortunately).
If I go, I won't know for sure until it gets closer to con time.

Why would you need to fill out paperwork to go? Where's your college located?
-
We would've needed to fill out travel request paperwork for the club to use its funds for the trip. Clark Community College.
-
Yesss!
I've been waiting for this.
I had so much last year.
I'm for sure going C:
-
I cannot wait to go again I am super excited for this :3
-
SO change of plans
I have two choices:
Moogle
or
Missingno
WHICH ONE!?!
-
Totally going this year, as I signed up to be a volunteer. lol
-
I'm going to try and give it a shot :)
Try and have Leaf done by then.
-

Moogle

Missingno
WHICH ONE!?!
I've already seen Moogles. Let's see Missingno!!
-
@Hawk: I was think Missingno, since it's going to be way easier. Hopefully there will be some other pokemon cosplayers there who I can glitch heheh...
-
So I'm going as Ninten this year (Ness pretty much) And I was wondering what are the rules on weapons?
Is there going to peace bonding cause I would like to bring my baseball bat. But I don't have to if it's frowned upon.
-
Last year there wasn't any rules, my friend brought a real sword (Kept it sheathed (most of the time))
but that will probably change
-

A lot of us who run the show are cosplayers. As long as we don't see the sword out (except for photos), or it isn't being brandished and swung around, its fine.
kit2kit, A baseball bat is absolutely fine to bring as long as you don't swing it around.
Our rules for this years' show are up on the website here: http://wondernorthwest.com/rules.php
THE RULES
- If it's not yours, don't touch it, take it, write on it or draw on it
- If you bring a prop (sword, lightsaber, blaster, giant robot) don't threaten people with it, swing it around, or hit people with it - even if they are your friends or enemies
- No "glomping" or tackle-hugs without asking first. If they say no, then don't do it!
- Wear clothes
-
So simple...
-
So simple...
No reason for it to be overly complicated, really.
If any of you are interested in volunteering for the show, you can submit your info through the website here (http://wondernorthwest.com/volunteer.php), and our volunteer coordinator will be in touch with you.
-
...does this mean I can wear a speedo? ;D
Well, if I go, it looks like it would not be a pre-reg thing. However, the site doesn't have at the door prices. Any idea on how much that is?
-
Really hoping my group and I can go this year! The location and price is definitely great, now we just have to see if it will fit into everybody's schedule.
-
some of my friends and i are planning an alpha kids group. we're all pretty psyched.
-
Sooo, I'll most likely be going to WonderNW in my Silver cosplay. I don't know who all I'll be bringing along, but I know quite a few people who will be attending.
-
I have 3 outfits planned for this. I'm only wearing two of them, but it depends.
I'm wearing my Steampunk Cheshire Cat for sure on the second day for the contest. And if my fellow Pirates can come, I'm being Gibbs from Pirates of the Caribbean. If they can't, I'm wearing my original Mad Hatter outfit.
-
If I can end up going I have too many costumes I'd want to wear. D: This truly seems like a great convention to bring Hit-Girl to, so I'd love to do that. But if Tommy can go, he'll be Jack, so I'd either do Sweeney or Angelica. But then if I do Angelica what would Sees do? Ffffffffffffff. Too many costumes and not enough time.
-

Actually a friend of mine who had gone before had said it was fifteen dollars to get in. :D Sorry, I didn't see the question at first.

On the website, you can pre-order a badge, for $15.
If it's anything like last year, you'll only have to pay $15 for the whole weekend, at the door as well.
Last year my fiancee and I pre-registered and only paid $10 each. And then our friend, who forgot to pre-reg, only had to pay $10 at the door as well.
I hope this helps.

Same price at door...? Awesome! My next paycheck will come after the pre-reg cutoff date, so this would be my best bet.
-
So if anyone went to MewCon in Vancouver, is the convention around that size? Smaller? Bigger?
-
i've never been to mewcon, but i believe that last year wonder northwest was about 200 people...?
-
It's about the same size as Mew usually is. Though, you don't have all the drunk people and it's all ages no matter what!
I'm excited for this, you have no idea!!!!
-
Well MewCon is a fun-sized convention, and I'm excited about Wonder, though I'm not all that sure what I'll cosplay if I don't get my pokemon cosplay done in time.
-
some of my friends and i are planning an alpha kids group. we're all pretty psyched.
Can't wait to see this! I'll probably be wearing my Jake English costume because it's easier to deal with than my Karkat costume. But who knows, maybe I'll wear that, too.
-

We had around 1000 people over the course of the weekend last year.
-
Wow, three posts in a row, sorry folks!
But this one is important. We have the judging categories for this year's costume contest ready! If you'd like to enter, the information for all of that will be up on the website shortly.
- Best Kid
- Best Period Costume
- Best Prop
- Best Cartoon/Comic/Game Character
- Best Overall
And before you ask, yes, anime counts as cartoons and manga counts as comics, guys.
-
1000 really? I thought it was way less
I am so entering the costume contest!

Wow I never though I thought it was around 260. By the way, I did register last week.
-
I hope the contest is in the afternoon....I have to go to church that morning XP
I'm definatly entering my Steampunk Cheshire Cat! My White Rabbit and Mad Hatter might be joining me too!
-
might be going if we work things out :3 ~ get to wear my Guy Cecil cosplay for the first time !

I'm not sure about individual day counts, but I do know that I stuffed 1000 bags for attendees, and we had given almost all of them away.
Also, guess what? The costume contest page is up and online! (http://wondernorthwest.com/costume.php)
-
When is the premeet? Just like a half hour before?
-
I'm planning on going! and I'll probably be Sakura since all I need is the wig, I'll get some red fabric and make a headband :)
-
When is the premeet? Just like a half hour before?
That's what it was last year, yes. I'm not too sure yet, but that is probably when it will be. We will make sure to announce it and have signage around the con. It will also be listed on the sign-in sheet. Unless church runs past 2pm for you, you should be fine.
-
Thanks. Sounds good!
I'm excited to fix up my Steampunk Cheshire cat for this!!!!!
-
Man, I am so excited to go to this!
My group is deciding though so on Day 2 I'll either be Planet Starlight Chaser's Excellence guy, Blondicai or Future Rigby from Regular Show. And on Day 1, I'm being Nega Scott from Scott Pilgrim.
FUUUU~ :'D
-
I was going to be Gibbs from Pirates, but looking at the stuff I need for him, it'll be better if I wait to finish him.
So I'm being my Original Mad Hatter with my March Hare and White Rabbit day 1, and then Steampunk Cheshire Cat with hopefully my White Rabbit and Mad Hatter on day 2!
-
I might have to go check this out :)
-
gonna go with some friends ! two of us are wearing ' Tales of! ' based cosplays and maybe gakuen sengoku basara
-
I have a question about the cosplay contest, is it possible to pick your own music, as long as it's a minute long?
-

Probably not. We had one person who had a clip last year. It is a costume contest, and not a skit contest, so your presentation has nothing to do with how you're judged. Also, I don't know how our soundboard will be set up. I'm going to say "Don't count on it" but bring it just incase we end up being able to accomodate your needs. You can always find a staff member at the show and they can help you find out the answer.
-
Okay, I would like to put on a fun preformance. I also think music would help the feeling of my cosplay across
-
I know I will be using my time to be creepy and talk about the things I made!
-
I want to be mostly creepy
Oh yeah!
When will we hear back about voluneteering?

Did you submit your information through our website? You should have heard back from our volunteer coordinator by now. If you haven't, please send your information again. It may have gotten lost in the shuffle.
EDIT: Also, regarding your previous post, our costume contest is not a skit contest like they have at anime cons. What were you looking to perform?
-
I'm amining to get Korea done for this, I'm also ordering Sakuras wig today too.

You can run it by the costume contest coordinator at the show, but you may not be able to do it if it's too involved. We're not trying to stifle you creatively, but we had a couple of short little skits performed last year and they simply did not go over well.
Good news, though! We have just confirmed our first anime vendor for Wonder Northwest! Hooray!

Im gonna go as Speed Racer, i hope.

where is Crowne Plaza..Google is not telling me :P

Looks like I'm not going again this year,
oh well.

I love those games / animes :)

I'm still debating whether I want to try to get these days off or do the con in the day followed up an 8 hour shift at night. :P

There will be a pre-meet. There will be no rehearsal time. Yet another reason why a skit or performance is not the right fit for our costume contest. We simply don't have the logistics for it! I'm not opposed to the idea, because I used to do skits back in the day, but we just don't have time and space for it in such a small venue. We've kicked around the idea of having multiple costume themed contests in future years, though.

I haven't remade the map from last year, so it still has the old logo on it, but there's a map on this page.

-
So...
I won't be Missingno, due to personal problems and the fact that I can't find a plain long white dress
it looks like I'm being RED scout for most of the time
-
So, I've decided on going for sure and I'll be cosplaying Izaya.
-
There are only 6 days left before Wonder NW! WHOOOOO!!
-
I'm getting so excited. I can't wait to see and meet you all there!
On Saturday, I will be Jake English from Homestuck, and I haven't decided what I'm doing on Sunday yet.
-
I have a change of plans: instead of going on Saturday, I'll be going on Sunday! Oh well!
-
Probably gonna make it up Sunday! I'll be Robin, unless someone asks me to do something else with them.
-
So, I have too much to do for my Steampunk Cheshire Cat that I wont get him done. Plus my White Rabbit's outfit ran into some problems....
So instead, I'll be Death the Kid from Soul Eater with my friend being Soul. Though, because of this, sadly we wont be able to do the cosplay contest....
-
I be hang around both day I will bring my big Chococat for the ride.
-
I'm just curious to know...
If we're bringing someone with us who is 13 years old, and we aren't her parents, but we're her cousins, would we need some sort of written permission to show that she has the okay to be there?
She would be with us the whole time and not allowed out of our sight, but we just want to make sure.
Oh! And do we need ID, if we're paying at the door?
-
You do not need ID or anything. It's an all ages con.
Also, I gotta say I'm dissapointed with this year. Between the lack of people (everyone's at Fanime...jerks), and it just seems less than it was last year. What ever happened to the Karaoke and Rockband?!?!?!
-
Yeah, I didn't stick around much, there wasn't any video games or anime viewing rooms so was kinda out.
-
Yeah, I didn't stick around much, there wasn't any video games or anime viewing rooms so was kinda out.
Sorry to hear you didn't stick around.
We want gaming, but we simply don't have room for it. It's something I'm really into, and I would love to have, though. As for anime viewing rooms, we're not an anime con specifically. We are a pop culture con. We might feature some anime in in future film festivals, but it depends on what we're able to get and license for screening.
Anime IS a part of pop culture, and a part of our show, so I don't want you to feel left out. However, please bear in mind that we have VERY limited space, time, and staff with which to cover a lot of material.
-

Our Rock Band MC retired, and we thought we'd try something new. Karaoke IS fun, and I love it. I'd love to have Karaoke again, and DID want it at this show. Again, it comes down to a matter of staff and space.
Also, from what I saw when I was checking rooms, a lot of the people were in panels or the film festival. Things never really felt empty, per say.
However, I do want to thank you both for your feedback.
-
The main panel room didn't have that great of circulation. I went in a few times to listen to them debate about what was the best console but couldn't stay too long. Hot cosplay is hot.
And on an unrelated note, decided to go get coffee at the exact wrong time for the pub crawl.... was sooooooo soaked.
-
That makes sense. Sad to hear about some of that. Hopefully we'll be able to get a larger venue in the future to have all the great stuff!
-
This year seemed a bit smaller then last year. But I still had fun : D
The pirates were amusing and the everyone was really nice
Do you think next year there could be a video game room?
Also does anyone happen to know that one Doctor who was there. Man that's not very specific but this guy --> http://images3a.snapfish.com/232323232%7Ffp73472%3Enu%3D3447%3E432%3E635%3E2538432726255ot1lsi
I dont mean to come off creepy it's just that I failed to get his name and I had met him the year before too D:
-
that doctor is misterintriguing on tumblr, although he doesn't use it often. he comes to portlandstuck meetups sometimes if you want to talk to him!
i had a blast, although for me the con was mostly just a chance to be social and hang out with friends. i only went to one and a half panels and the dance at the end (which was probably my favorite part, by the way). the dealer's hall was pretty good and there were lots of cool cosplays running around.
-
I was the Roxas and I had a ton of fun. :D Especially truth and dare.
-
I wish there was more but still Wonder Northwest is a nice diversion. Just one thing about the comments remeber Wonder Northwest is a multi genre con. I like anime but it should not be the only fan group.
-
I defiantly would love to have a small video game room. I loved playing some of the old games in the venders hall, but it got crowded after a while.
Also, I would love for there to be Karaoke again. That's always the one thing I dislike about the other cons I go to, they're 95% japanese songs and I'm bad at those...Love having english and my fav songs to sing last year! Hope we can have that again!
I also encourage having more categories for the costume contest. Not just for style of costumes, but also skills.
I know it'd be awesome to have a Best Makeup category, but that's mainly b/c I'm working on costumes that involve difficult makeup and not hard outfits...
-
I was the Roxas and I had a ton of fun. :D Especially truth and dare.
^
I found you! I was Once-ler!
Thanks everyone for a great con! I had so much fun, even if I sat around for 4 hours watching doors!
Thanks to all who made our truth or dare game on day two lots of fun!
