Title: 2012: Hetalia & SatW
Post by: Shi_no_Akuma on September 09, 2011, 07:23:13 am
Hey! If you're looking at this thread because you wanted to find out who was responsible for the disasters this year's shoots turned out to be, you're looking in the wrong place! I'm sorry but our shoot was hijacked and when we arrived to run it at the actual time, we were notified by an outside friend that it had been moved to earlier in the day and elsewhere in the park.

So for the person/people who hijacked it, not cool! And read the stuff below because they pretty much covered everything you didn't do or enforce and drove people away from cosplaying Hetalia at any future cons in the area!

Basic Etiquette Refresher
  - Rape is never funny, so refrain from making jokes about it
  - Respect Other's Personal Space
  - No one is required to do anything they do not feel comfortable doing. Ignore anyone who says otherwise
  - Encourage other cosplayers! If you see someone shying off toward the edges, and can gently re-introduce them, please do so.

 Re: Flags:
  - Do Not Deface Them (As that is someone's national symbol and it will offend people of that nation/decent)
  - Do Not Let Them Touch The Ground (Yes, some countries are more lenient. No, you are not there, so it does still apply)
  - Please Do Not Use Them As Blankets (See above) Or Capes
  - Huge Flags Are Not Necessary (If you feel that you need a flag to identify you, small ones work just as well, and are less likely to offend people)
  - Just show the flag respect; dead nation, your nation, or otherwise, it's a basic courtesy to those who have/will/are living there

↓ READ THIS ↓
There is a WWII Memorial Mural between the two hotels, and as this fandom already doesn't have the most stellar reputation when it comes to simple etiquette, I'm formally requesting that no one takes photos at/around/or anywhere near the memorial. Such behavior is in poor taste, and neither your personal reputations, the Hetalia fandom, or even KumoriCon needs the bad press such behavior would bring.
In short, just use proper manners and show the memorial the respect such places deserve.

I'm most likely going to be Italy again (considering that this was the most fun i had ever had in a cosplay), but i'm hoping to switch it up a little and try and be a version of Italy that i found from this one doujin...

But I dunno, it's in a year, so I might have more cosplays by then. ;D

It just takes practice. I have a couple pairs of shoes with that kind of heel, you just need to have some ballence and practice in them.

I'll probably be going as Poland again, don't know which outfits, and maybe Iceland.

Okie dokie Loki~

Yay this is up!  I'm going to be N.Italy and Chibitalia this year :3 and possibly N.Italy in his tanktop/boxers outfit.
Got it~ And because I didn't want to bump the old thread, you're very much welcome. c:

Succession!Prussia this year. It will happen.
Succession'll be done by Fanime if not the end of this year~ As I have a chunk of the fabric needed, all the patterns, and I need to run to Eugene to buy more fabric to re-do Femstria's jacket anyway, so I'll pick up the rest of it then~
Among everything else we're doing, I really want to do Fem!Spain, but I have no clue if there'd be any time. D: And we'd need to kidnap coerce someone to be our Fem!France. . .

I'm loving the heals on those boots.

I couldn't walk in those kind of heals to save my life xD But i've already found some boots that look almost exactly like those, but without pointy heals...
But, but those are some of the easiest heels to walk in. ;A; My absolute favorite pair of ankle boots have a slightly thinner heel, and I can run in them.

Oh hey, I'll actually be going in 2012~

I may try to do Turkey for this one (his outfit from Volume 3.)
Yeeeesss~ : D

I'll try to actually go to the shoot next year, it looks like I missed out on a lot of fun! Probs gonna do Fem!Romano again.
And yay, more Nyotalia! c:

Miria has a point. To be completely and absolutely fair, we've had a couple costumes that have been planned for years that we're finally getting in this year.
And every single one of those makes me want to hug you.

I am so coming again! It's too close to my house for me not to come! XD

I'm working on some new UK cosplay so I might do those. I am TOTALLY coming as Chibi UK though. XD
Luuuuuckyyy~ D: Next year'll probably be my last year being only three-four hours away.

Yay this is up already =D I'll either go as Fem!Sweden or Belarus again ^3^
Fem!Sweden~ <333

Eeeeh, I loved your Children's Day Poland. Did I tell you that? I think I said I loved you or something at one point.

Since I cosplayed him this year, my Denmark isn't exactly a secret anymore. so, yeah. My friends and I will be cosplaying Denmark (me), Sweden (reine), and Chibitalia (Titus_love_doll) again next year. Only this time we're taking the 18+ panel out of the hands of that dear Norway and Russia, and running it ourselves. It will be sweet, blessed chaos. *insert evil laughter here*

Looking forward to seeing everyone at con again in a years time.

I probably won't be going to this, no offense, because there would probably be one hell of a lot of triggery things said considering the lack of rules. I would, however, change the first post if I were you so that it doesn't seem like you're insulting the girls running the other panel.
Title: Re: 2012: Hetalia: Axis Powers & Scandinavia and the World
Post by: hikaru_maxwell on September 26, 2011, 03:03:00 pm
The original post was written that way because it was funny, and also so that people realize that we (the people running the panel) have a looser sense of humor and restriction than the people who ran the panel this year.  I did not intend to insult them, but I also don't intend to change the first post. Cannot Unsee's panel isn't a World Meeting. It's a panel by Hetalia fans FOR Hetalia fans that are over the age of 18.

It won't be 'lacking rules' (we actually expect our panelists and attendees both to follow con, hotel, state, and federal laws alike, and we won't hesitate to ask for people breaking those laws to be escorted out by staff), but we're not going to penalize people for getting excited and acting in-character. If a panel that ends up being more like the "world meetings" tend to become in the anime and manga isn't for you, there's no need for you to come. Please don't try to tell us how to run our panel if you have no intention of attending it in the first place. (Also, if you wish to comment on the first post of the Cannot Unsee Hetalia panel topic, please do so IN the topic in question, or PM me privately. This is not the appropriate place for this discussion.)

On a lighter note, I've heard from one of my friends on facebook that her sister might be South Korea....maybe. I hope she does, because that would be epic.

I don't think she was trying to tell you how to run your pannel. I think she was just warning you that, because of what you said in your other thread about the "insanity" that's going to happen in this pannel, someone might say something that might get other people offended (Seriously, if i was there and someone made ANY joke concerning Hitler and Jews, i'd get up and storm out of that pannel faster then a cheetah.)

So it wasn't really telling you what to do, it was more of a warning on how people might take the "people can get excited and say whatever they want" thing to the extreme and offend people.

Also, what you said about them having a looser sense of humor wasn't exactly nice...
Title: Re: 2012: Hetalia: Axis Powers & Scandinavia and the World
Post by: hikaru_maxwell on September 26, 2011, 04:50:59 pm
I've seen over 18 panels get much worse than what happened in the Hetalia panel this year, I have no intention of letting the panel get too out of hand, or letting our panelists or attendees break any laws (or con rules), but after seeing all the wank and complaints about this years panel, my assertion about needing a 'looser' sense of humor when it comes to such things seems valid, at least on my part. It wasn't intended as an insult, but you can take it whatever way you want.

I don't have any intention of cracking jokes about hitler, or jews. As far as I know, the people who have already said they plan to come, would probably find that in bad taste as well, and having most of a room glaring at you because you made a joke like that would definitely be less than comfortable for the person who did it as well.  I'm not requiring that anyone attend the panel if they don't want to, but I do ask that you kindly not give your 'advice' in an open forum if you have no intention of attending in the first place, or if you feel you truly must, please post in the topic about that panel, so we don't end up hijacking this hetalia cosplay topic any more than we already have. If someone has something to say to me or anyone else involved with the panel, and don't want to do so in the panel topic, they can do it in PMs.

Well i wouldn't be able to go even if i wanted too considering i'm only 15 .w.; But anyway, i only said what i said to try and prevent further arguements from happening over a misunderstanding. I do, however, hope your pannel goes well and that things don't get too out of hand.

Saki basically got what I was saying, but I'll still reply anyway because I don't think you understand.

Intent and how you come across are two entirely different things. Sure, it isn't your intent to sound passive-aggressive, but that's how you come across. It's simply a word of advice and a warning, as Saki explained.

Quote
It won't be 'lacking rules' (we actually expect our panelists and attendees both to follow con, hotel, state, and federal laws alike, and we won't hesitate to ask for people breaking those laws to be escorted out by staff), but we're not going to penalize people for getting excited and acting in-character.
Except those are a given. I meant lacking rules other than basic laws. Sorry, but I don't want to sit in a panel for a few hours hearing nothing but rape jokes and memes and I have a feeling other people may not, either- Which is exactly why I'm not going, because I've been to enough cons and been in the fandom long enough to know that that's exactly what it would degenerate into. If you went to this year's shoot, you'd have known that Shi and I laid down some basic rules and everything went smoothly. You wouldn't have those aside from con, hotel, state, and federal laws, which again are a given.

Quote
If a panel that ends up being more like the "world meetings" tend to become in the anime and manga isn't for you, there's no need for you to come.
Again, wasn't planning on it. Also, I wasn't aware that the world meetings in the anime/manga were rated R?

It's interesting how you say this after you continue the discussion in my thread. Also, I'm sorry you take my critique as telling you how to run your panel. I'm simply giving you advice and warning you. After all, by deciding to do this, you have opened yourself up for critique and I would rather do it in an open forum where people can respond.

Also, what you said about them having a looser sense of humor wasn't exactly nice...
Pretty much this. Also, an addendum to the Hitler jokes, I'd have to strongly resist the urge to punch anyone who made rape jokes. Hence why Shi and I politely ask the people at our shoots to not make those jokes. Thank you for bringing up the Nazis, though, Saki, I'll have to remember that for next year. Thankfully, no one shouted any jokes about the Nazis this year at the shoot.

Again, intent and the way one comes across are two entirely different things. If you choose to find offensive jokes funny, that is your business, but keep in mind that it could alienate quite a few people and keep them from going to your panel.

Quote
I don't have any intention of cracking jokes about hitler, or jews. As far as I know, the people who have already said they plan to come, would probably find that in bad taste as well, and having most of a room glaring at you because you made a joke like that would definitely be less than comfortable for the person who did it as well.
Most offensive jokes aren't pre-meditated, they just fly out of someone's mouth, and just because you won't doesn't mean no one else will. The people who say they will come are not the only people going to the panel as well.

Also, no offense, but have you never been to a panel, much less a Hetalia one? At a convention? People wouldn't be glaring. They'd be laughing along and they'd continue them. As much as I hate to say it, the Hetalia fandom has a bad rep for a reason and that's because the fans can get out of hand, especially when it comes to Nazis. (although you guys were amazing this year and Shi and I love you all for it. <3) Remember Anime Boston?

Quote
I'm not requiring that anyone attend the panel if they don't want to, but I do ask that you kindly not give your 'advice' in an open forum if you have no intention of attending in the first place, or if you feel you truly must, please post in the topic about that panel, so we don't end up hijacking this hetalia cosplay topic any more than we already have. If someone has something to say to me or anyone else involved with the panel, and don't want to do so in the panel topic, they can do it in PMs.
The Hetalia cosplay topic always gets hijacked. We got off-topic all the time during the very first one even, albeit that was more about history and less about potential drama. You advertised your panel in here and I gave a response- In here. I feel it was perfectly appropriate.

@MiriaRose: I knew there was a reason for awesome people like you.
But I totaly agree with you on this stuff.

As cosplayers, and in the hetalia fandom. we all really need to try our best to be ggod in this fandom. because now it seems like if you even heard of hetalia, your the biggest idiot ever. (Not calling people one, but thats how people are sorta viewed in this fandom now, and its sad.)
Because alot of us are in fact trying our best to show that not all of us are crazy.

Thanks. I don't want Kumoricon to get the rep of Anime Boston (I keep using this example for a reason guys) and I'd rather not have anyone here be posted on /cgl/. The Hetalia fandom has such a bad rap as it is- I don't want it to get even worse because someone got caught up in the moment and had a foot-in-mouth moment.

@Titus: I am most defiantly doing it!~ But the problem is since I'm going by my own design of Prussia's maid outfit, I need to find one of those sexy halloween maid costumes and alter it to be Prussia-ish. And I see some of those costumes are pretty spendy.......

I don't mean to sound rude, but this isnt your thread to make that choice. And she keeps trying to remind people about what happened so it still stays a family con and not over run by crazed fans.

She is just doing her best to keep people from getting into trouble. And if she needs to repeat her self, over and over and over again.... Its because people still don't get it and they need to learn that some things are not okay.

Plus, if you don't like what we are talking about, then just over looking it and ignore it. Easy as that.

Okay, I understand that maybe our panel is coming off as some chaotic no holds barred, this is going to be the panel that ruins hetalia forever thing (to some people), but we have no intention of letting it become that. I'm sorry if my post offended anyone, but this will be the last time I post about it IN THIS TOPIC.

Like I have said before, if any of you have a problem with the panel (which I was just excitedly saying I was going to be running because it was a shiny new thing for us to get involved in, for myself and my cosplay group), you should really post your issues in the panel topic itself. Feel free to do so, and I or any of the other panelists will be happy to address your concerns.

*shoves the topic back on track with a bulldozer*

Chroma, have you thought of making it yourself? It'd probably be less expensive to buy the fabric and make a maid uniform than spend money on a possibly not very good halloween cosplay.

When have I been hissy fitting? If I were hissy fitting I'd be far, far worse. I tend to not hissy fit over serious issues such as this. Please don't tell me to "stop hissy fitting" and to "go with the flow". You're detracting from the real issue at hand, which is a common response made by people who are being offensive when called out on it.

Quote
really everything that was said was childish and needs to end
Childish? I've been posting in a serious tone, using proper English, and been courteous. I'd hardly call that childish.

Quote
DONT even think about nor talk about it it is now in the past .
It's nice of you to tell me what to do in my own thread when this is a serious issue.

Quote
and will stay in the past this is kumoricon a family con for all you guys
Yes, it's a family con. Hence the discussion.

Quote
dislike it then thats you for me I dont care anymore
If I disliked Kumoricon, I wouldn't pay $500 a year to attend. Because that is the absolute minimum I spend on Kumoricon, from train tickets and registration and hotel costs.

Quote
so please just stop talking about those other post above your heads
Why? Seriously, it's a valid question. This is an issue. The fact that we're all still talking about it shows that. Please don't detract from it; it's important.

Quote
and what happen at anime bosten its not our con THIS is our con our family if you guys dont want it to be runied then drop it and end of story and be happy agian
I'm sorry, but dropping it doesn't solve the problems. By ignoring an issue, one makes it worse. Also, what happens at Anime Boston does matter. We represent our fandom and what we do does matter. Lots of people who attend Kumoricon go on /cgl/, and lots of people on /cgl/ hate Hetalia and will do anything for a good slice of drama. This is important.

Rozen, thank you so much.

It's not going to ruin Hetalia FOREVER. I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say, which is why I'm continuing to say it here.

Updating the first post from what I've missed, for which I do deeply apologize for, but I've had issues with both my mental and physical health lately, so responding to posts has been low on my priority list.

So if you're still missing after the edit, please feel free to remind me to add you.

Interjecting before I start quoting, but the current matter is very much on topic, as it does concern the fandom and the cosplayers who will be attending the con next year.

Look you all need to stop hissy fitting about it and go with the flow really everything that was said was childish and needs to end DONT even think about nor talk about it it is now in the past . and will stay in the past this is kumoricon a family con for all you guys dislike it then thats you for me I dont care anymore so please just stop talking about those other post above your heads and what happen at anime bosten its not our con THIS is our con our family if you guys dont want it to be runied then drop it and end of story and be happy agian
Please don't take this as a personal attack, but this is exactly why these matters need to be addressed.
Shoving things under a rug, throwing a hissy fit while attempting to call out a hissy fit, and calling parties who don't share the same opinion as you childish is not how issues are addressed and worked through. Saying dropping an issue to save it from being ruined is counterproductive, if a government was to take that initiative, nothing would get done and the majority would suffer.

As you've stated, Kumoricon is a family con, so extra measure are needed to ensure that the fandom as a whole does not do anything offensive is a main priority, and should always be an active part of your mind while still managing to have fun.

Okay, I understand that maybe our panel is coming off as some chaotic no holds barred, this is going to be the panel that ruins hetalia forever thing (to some people), but we have no intention of letting it become that. I haven't finished reading through the thread it's in yet, but by the way you have worded things, you're not leading things to end in a desirable way.

I will post in the thread when I have finished reading through it, but I will state here that you should have asked the previous runners of the last two year's World Meeting panels if it was okay for you to steal their idea, as the evidence stated has given no proof that you have, and that you have insulted them while simultaneously stealing their idea.

There is, after all, an understood respect between Kumori-Con attendees to respect others' wishes, as Kumo's community is more family like than Fanime or AX's.

Oh, Miria and Rozen, thank you so much. <3

But yes. I was talking to the person befor she choose to leave it up to the new people who are running the world meeting now about how some one was hosting a 18+ panel. And we both agreed it was a little rude to basicly take the idea. She and I both felt a little insulted because she didnt want to host a 18+ panel for good reasons. That was clearly stated.
(Hope this makes sence)

I don't speak for Programming at all, nor am I speaking as a moderator. This is just my personal opinion:

By far the best thing you can do is work on making your own panel fun and interesting. Trashing someone else's panel doesn't make yours look better by comparison. If anything, it calls it into question.

The Programming people are the ones who have final say on panel content, not the forums.

~~~~~
That said, I do need to say one thing as a moderator: This is the Cosplay board, not Panels. Please keep it on the topic of cosplay, and please keep it civil.
I'm basing it off of an old Marching band uniform XD (like 1960-1980's era)(it's Red, White, and balck) and Roy Mustang's pants XD
I'm working of making huge gears for the back to cover a large glue stain, and for America's huge ego, and love of all things. Need a wig, and glasses that'll have clock gears welded/glued to them. I'm doing it as effective/cheaply as possible.
Well, depeands on what you meen by nazi prussia. I wouldn't care, because nothing offends me. But if you do the hole swastika arm band, I would say just be carefull with what you say and what body languge (SP) you give off.
Personally I would not think it's a problem. I mean in 2010 there were a hand full of Schrodinger cosplayers from Hellsing. And Schro always has a nazi armband on. I think the Hellsing fandom died so much there were no cosplayers this year. But, I say you should go for it. But wait on the others opinion before you decide for sure.
In my opinion, I think Nazi!Germany though is a more logical choice, but then again could be offensive.
Personally I would not think it's a problem. I mean in 2010 there were a hand full of Schrodinger cosplayers from Hellsing. And Schro always has a nazi armband on. I think the Hellsing fandom died so much there were no cosplayers this year. But, I say you should go for it. But wait on the others opinion before you decide for sure.
In my opinion, I think Nazi!Germany though is a more logical choice, but then again could be offensive.
I wanted to do germany...(the wwii out fit... wich is, the nazi unifrom but he has a soldier's offcer hat wich confuses me) but I would just be in his normal uniform.... And germany has a M36 eilet(sp) officer unifrom (Dont ask me why I know... I am a history nut) and I wanted to get a replica of it... some day. But wth out the arm band.
What's offensive?
'Kay. I can give you my list:
Discrimination
Slurs
Sexual abuse jokes
Hell, abuse jokes in general
Nazis
Actually any genocide jokes/references
Disrespecting flags
etc. etc. etc.
Also, as for cosplaying Nazi!Germany? To a con? No. Please don't. There's a lot of people who go to Kumoricon who have relatives who were murdered in the Holocaust- Myself being one of them. And yes, I would get very, very mad. Hell, there's plenty of people in Portland and Vancouver who are survivors of that and suffer psychological damage from it. The Holocaust really wasn't that long ago.
As for Nazi!Prussia: The Prussians weren't too fond of Hitler. In 1934 Hitler enacted Preussenschloss which basically took away all of the power Prussia had, and the aristocrats were not fond of that, not one bit. Aside from that, while they were horribly racist, they didn't think that they should go kill everyone they didn't like with fire. As for nazi!Germany, most of the Germans during that time weren't Nazis.
I'm not sure what sort of personal reasons you might have for doing it, but I'd advise against it. It'd be really tasteless, bro, and staff would probably ask you to change. Aside from that, you'd get posted on /cgl/ by any of the Oregonian seagulls, and you would basically become Oregon's Axelai (whom I incidentally go to the same university as! whooo~).
Also, what exactly did Axelai do? I've seen her videos and cosplay account and she seems like a fine person to me...
Were you thinking of cosplaying Germany in an SS uniform without the armband? Or the german military uniform from the WW2 era? Although I'd love to see someone pull of the SS uniform privately, some people who have personal issues regarding WW2 and the Holocaust might be offended by it, regardless of whether you wear the swastika armband.
That said, I'm not sure con staff would be upset enough to ask anyone to change out of their uniform, so long as it covers all the naughty bits. If it had the armband, they might ask the cosplayer to cover it, but asking them to change out of their whole cosplay isn't something I think is likely to happen.
This thread is currently locked and will remain so until tomorrow.  Moderators need sleep and we don't want this to flare up again over night.  The thread may receive more moderator actions before unlocking.
Some reminders:
* Please keep talk civil and do not post comments that only serve to escalate the tension in a thread.
* While I know that politics can be relevant to some cosplays, please do try and keep on topic.  Debating politics or morality is not appropriate here.
* There has been talk in this thread of Kumoricon being a 'family con'.  I would like to point out that the rating of the con and of these forums is PG-13.  Content and outfits do not need to be be 'all age friendly'.
Alright folks, I am unlocking the topic after reading it.
A few things:
-Personal attacks are not at all kosher on the forums. I'm not going to point out who, but you know who you are.
-As I consider the forums an extenstion of the convention, I will sometimes go to the convention policies if I need to. I feel this discussion falls under this caveat of harrassment:
Quote
Harassment
-Offensive or rude behavior toward anyone
I consider this past page and a half exactly that.
If this flamefest continues, I will lock this thread and the mod team will more than likely have a discussion on if we will allow Hetalia threads moving forward. Please think about that before even thinking about going into round two of this flamefest.
I also urge you to read up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika) on the symbolism of the swastika symbol, as it was really the Nazi Party during the 1920s-1950s which villainized the symbol.
You all owe me donuts for making me mod this early. =P
@KyoKyo866: are you using your real hair or a wig?  If it's your real hair you might use gel, but if it's a wig, my friend told me to use hair wax and then spray it with a good kind of hairspray (like Herbal Essences). There's a kind of Hairspray that shouldn't be used that I can't remember the name of right now that will eat your wigs, though.
Products you can use other then hair spray
One thing about GEL is it can make the wig sticky and gorse and can sometimes eat the fibers been down that road the link below is for wigs. IF you do Gel get wig gel. not normal gel you can buy at any store . that gel is ment for human hair with its natural oils and what not.
http://www.amazon.com/Brandywine-Wig-Styling-Gel-8oz/dp/B000KGITP2
Waxes I ve use any type of hair wax for styling wigs. is is very good  when you want that good detail.
Hair spray.
I ve alot of hair spray and i wound out the white rain hair spray eats at wigs. i used it on my ayase wig (demark now) and the ends ended up looking fried.
Strong holding hair spray is very good. as well looking online or go to a sallys. for wig when it comes to gel
More russias are always welcome! On a good note, my Denmark wig is now officially mine, so I can now style it properly without worrying about ruining my friend's Ayase cosplay. Yay for not having flat-haired!Denmark for next Kumoricon.
We (the nordics I cosplay with) were also thinking of maybe doing a mashup of SATW and Hetalia for some of the 2012 con, like randomly switching the personalities, and the similar things. For example, Hetalia!Denmark being terrified of Nature, and hiding behind the nearest Norway cosplayer, etc. It should be really fun.
There seems to be a bit of confusion on this subject, or at least there has been in the past so I'll just post a little disclaimer here:
Shi and I joint run this shoot.
It's not just one of us being fully in-charge, we do an equal amount of work. Also, I don't have access to her account and can't change the OP, so I can't add people to the list personally.
Thanks! <3
Whenever I dye things that have the potential to bleed, I overdye them a little so they're a couple shades darker than I want, then wash them by themselves so if they do bleed they don't turn anything else funny colours. After that the colour usually stays fine without bleeding onto other things.
Adding to this, if it's red, maybe wash it by itself the first few times. Or just get the apron dry-cleaned when you have to.
Red is the worst colour ever when it comes to washing I swear to god.
However, I'm down to needing wigs for Wy, Fem!Sweden, 2P!Fem!England, and Pirate!Spain, so I just need to start buying the materials and sewing down my long list of cosplays I have wigs for. c:
I also bought the wigs for my siblings' Chuck and Trixie cosplays, but those aren't needed until Kumori and they're not Hetalia related, and a good starter SLR to get into con photography.
Mmkay this is a bit of a weird post, but I'm looking for a hetalia cosplayer, specifically an american one, and I'm pretty sure this is the most likely place I'm going to find her. The night in question I met said cosplayer was..... friday or saturday. It's frankly been a long weekend and I cant remember which day was which.
I've been spending a hell of a lot of time being a monster all october at Fright Town, and I usually work in the black box. My costume changes by the night. We have cosplayers through quiet often, and while having people in costume come through as patrons is- sometimes a hassle since they can mix in with the monsters, it can also be fun since I can play spot the cosplayer. (and we have a lot of cosplayers in our monster cast too)
I had one night when I was roaming the Black Box (one of the three haunts we have) I saw a blonde wig with a hair swirl. Curious I snuck up behind the group to see if I could get a scare out of em and figure out who the cosplayer was. Turns out it was a Hetalia cosplayer dressed as America in some kinda of red coat with some white and (I think) blue in there, holding an old film real prop that had "Americas Ego" written on it.
She came through twice, second time on her own. I felt kinda bad that she was alone so I followed her through kinda at her side (we do that sometimes when folks come in alone) and she was really awesome, even if I had to leave her partway through to take care of some douche's who wouldnt turn their cell phone lights off (we made it clear no lights from the start to the end).
Whoever you were Miss/Sir America, you were coolio. If you cant get it quiet yet I was the girl with the bloody face, messed up brown hair, a black knee length dress with a rope belt that had a saw knife attached to it (and that night I believe I had one in my hand too). You were coolio and my names Jill.
So sorry if this is slightly off topic, but I'm taking this as my best bet and I was pretty appreciative of that cosplayer. Added some charm to my night.
...that guy looks nothing like an Indian.  At best, maybe he's a Spaniard who's moved to India, or something...  Thinner eyebrows and a mocha-like skin tone would make him look a lot more like an Indian, and maybe get rid of the bindi, or make it look less like a pimple...
Title: Re: 2012: Hetalia & SatW [Whoo~]
Post by: sandrobotticelli on November 06, 2011, 10:23:37 am
^That's secretly what he is. A Spaniard that's moved to India taking the Indian people's identity!
But in all seriousness, I would have liked to see a darker complexion/shade. But I've also seen, particularly in Bollywood and some Indian male models, a lot of lighter-toned Indians. I've seen my fair share of ones about as light as me! I like his eyebrows, actually. Also, bindis, from my recollection, are mainly just worn by women, I think you're referring to a tilak? In which case I think it's a cute touch, but yes, I wish it was more defined but sometimes tiny details like that are not always well drawn out with Himaruya. Usually he saves those details for official drawings/designs.
Bindis are not gender-specific.  We Westerners do tend to think of them as specifically being just for women, in particular married women, but they have many other roles that apply to both men & women, mostly meditative things.  From what I understand, the difference between a bindi and a tilak is region.
So, the "character" India isn't even Indian, but an imposter...?
I'm well aware of the roles of bindis, having been Hindu in the past myself. Bindis are a type of tilak. Though you are correct that it's not gender specific, I've just mainly in the past heard tilak when talking about men and bindi when talking about a woman. My memory totally faded me, but yes a tilak is more of a mark of the sect of hinduism (like the three lines for shaivism and the 'u' shape for vaishnavism.)
I don't know if you meant for that to be a joke or you were serious. If serious, no, that's India alright.
 But we really shouldn't go too off topic in this discussion in a cosplay thread ;]
 :'( A-kon is the one I want to go to the most.
I'm part of an anime club, and we voted between that and Sakura-con.  Since almost all of the members have never been to Sakura-con, they chose that one.  I was all, "We live in Washington, hello!  You're going to have more opportunities for that one than one in Dallas!"
I was even thinking about cosplaying as the character that the con is named after...
Well, it looks like my Scotland cosplay is going to be a strong possibility, but there's also the chance that I'll be Liechtenstein, too, though that one isn't as high a priority (at least not now).  My fiancee & I are looking to go to Tokyo in Tulsa this year, and Liechtenstein is a possible cosplay for me, just because I've recently joined an online RPG group with a bunch of TNT attendees as her; it's still up for debate.
I believe I have changed my cosplay plans for the last time but I will not promise anything. I am not doing N.Italy this year. Instead I am going to being doing S.Italy, continuing with the maid outfit idea.
Sooo, yes, I am almost positive I will be doing revolutionary war America OR another type of America. Depends on if I can really spend the tax money or not.
Alright, fixed/added!
Sadly, I have no convention to go to until Kumoricon, so these cosplays are my only concerns. ^^;;
I am on this boat to. OTL
This is actually my first year going to other cons, and we're going big (Wonder, Fanime, AX, Yaoi).
But I still wish that I could make Sakura and Otakon. :c
Haha, it's called Otakon, and it's in Maryland.
Also, there is a two week break between when school gets out and when Fanime is, Shi, so I'll probably end up staying in San Francisco with Euge for two weeks and then we'll drive down to San Jose and then Santa Barbara. xD
IF YOU GET HERE EARLY THEN YOU COULD GO TO IN-AND-OUT :D
Ah! I can tell you about this. (Sence I am one of the people running it)
Basicly, we have a panel and people sign up as characters they are going to cosplay. The Panel Leaders have a list of topics, and the countries (aka cosplayers) give their point of veiw. Just like a meeting. And other guests are welcome, and if we have time they can ask questions or give an opinon them self.
I hope that makes sence.
I'm using the visit to go fabric shopping, and I don't have any done that I'd be willing to run around Eugene willy nilly in~
Speaking of which, I think my fabric run'll include more fabric to finish up fem!America & fem!Austria, then fabric for Succession for Austria & Prussia, Panty, and Applejack's top for sure. So after getting a look at Fanime and who all has signed up, we're only going to hold a single shoot as it's hard to justify two with the amount of people we'll expect to show up this year.
Tentatively scheduled for 1pm, if you all don't mind voting (http://"http://bit.ly/L9qKEx"), we'll keep the poll up and will probably decide on the day a week or so before con itself. c:
No problem, I can see how my phrasing is vague.
We're only expecting a little. I know different areas do factor into who chooses what to cosplay, but Hetalia seemed to barely scrape up enough cosplayers at Fanime, so I'm not expecting the same turnout as the last two Kumoris. >:
Well, at the Hetalia photoshoots I ran at Sakuracon there was a huuuuuge turnout. A lot more than I had expected (which was a handful).
I still think it's a good idea to hold two photoshoots though. I can personally run around the convention letting /any/ hetalia cosplayers I see know about it.
Mmm right. I didn't really check on the turnout as Sakura, as it always falls on dates that makes it hard for others to go with me, and I'm a big fat chicken if there's no way for me to know anyone before going. ;;{While I remember, Miria, are you still willing to entertain me and go to Yaoicon?}
But it is a valid point. I'm just not sure how much people'd like being organized by someone not cosplaying from Hetalia, because I'm pretty likely to not stay in APH all that much during the weekend, save for a shoot.
I'd have to ask Miria, but if two shoots seems to stay the most popular choice, we could cover one and have other people catch the other???
Mmm right. I didn't really check on the turnout as Sakura, as it always falls on dates that makes it hard for others to go with me, and I'm a big fat chicken if there's no way for me to know anyone before going. ;;{While I remember, Miria, are you still willing to entertain me and go to Yaoicon?}
But it is a valid point. I'm just not sure how much people'd like being organized by someone not cosplaying from Hetalia, because I'm pretty likely to not stay in APH all that much during the weekend, save for a shoot.
I'd have to ask Miria, but if two shoots seems to stay the most popular choice, we could cover one and have other people catch the other???
Ah, I see..And it's okay. xD That's how I feel about conventions as well, and that's why I didn't go to a convention in TX because I didn't know anyone going (that well), and it was also too close to christmas. ;;
Well, I'm always willing to help out in any way if you need it, and I'm sure people shouldn't mind being organized by someone not in Hetalia cosplay...Seems kinda silly if they got super worked up about it.
You mean like the 18+ World Meeting that went on last year? If so no there is no 18+ panel but there are two World Meetings happening Day 1 and Day 2, both days with different topics and in the evening but slightly different times.
So will there be only one photoshoot, or will there be two?
Hallo!  ♥  I'm very late this year, but I'll be Belgium again - if my procrastination comes back to bite me in the bustle pad, I'll just bring maid-Belgium from last year; if it doesn't, I'll be what's listed in my signature.  (Hopefully it doesn't.  orz)
See you then!
So, which day is which panel? I'd still really like to be in one, but I'm not sure which day is 2p, and which is normal. (Also, finally finished my cosplay! Whoot!)
Quite. I can only manage to make it to the convention for one day, and it would be nice to know which day that will be in advance.  :-\
Okay, I'm really sorry for ignoring this, but it's been one of those years and it just keeps getting worse.
Anyway, the 'official' shoot will be Saturday at noon in front of the clocktower to move elsewhere, and another will be held Sunday if anyone's willing to pick it up, otherwise it could just be a meet.
And anyone else that needed to be added has been so.
It's okay. c:
Thank you for letting us know!
(I'd be willing to pick up Sunday's since I can't go to the Saturday one in Hetalia cosplay.)
Do you want to me to put it down the same as Saturday's, or at a different time?
Okay, apparently someone went behind our backs and changed the shoot time to 12:00 at the gazebo.
Who did this? People are leaving the fandom because of this mess.
Shi and I know how to organise a shoot. We have done this before. Our shoots have gone smoothly in the past. Whoever did this could not control the shoot. This was an awful experience for many, many people and due to the fact that apparently there were rape jokes a plenty, it could have triggered some people.
More importantly, someone deliberately went behind our backs to do this because they wanted to hijack the shoot for their own.
Stand up and identify yourself, please.
^No, it was earlier because our shoot was supposed to be at noon
But congrats whoever did! I'm done; you won. I don't love this fandom as much as I did four years ago and I'm plain tired of being undermined or ending up in arguments that shouldn't have to be argued over.
I have costumes from Hetalia still planned, but I'll be wearing them elsewhere the fandom is less caustic and I don't have to worry about watching my every step in case someone decides that they want to yank my standing out from underneath me.
Hey! If you're looking at this thread because you wanted to find out who was responsible for the disasters this year's shoots turned out to be, you're looking in the wrong place! I'm sorry but our shoot was hijacked and when we arrived to run it at the actual time, we were notified by an outside friend that it had been moved to earlier in the day and elsewhere in the park.
So for the person/people who hijacked it, not cool! And please read the stuff below because they pretty much covered everything you didn't do or enforce, which the lack of did indeed drive people away from cosplaying Hetalia at any future cons in the area!
Basic Etiquette Refresher
  - Rape is never funny, so refrain from making jokes about it
  - Respect Other's Personal Space
  - No one is required to do anything they do not feel comfortable doing. Ignore anyone who says otherwise
  - Encourage other cosplayers! If you see someone shying off toward the edges, and can gently re-introduce them, please do so.
 Re: Flags:
  - Do Not Deface Them (As that is someone's national symbol and it will offend people of that nation/decent)
  - Do Not Let Them Touch The Ground (Yes, some countries are more lenient. No, you are not there, so it does still apply)
  - Please Do Not Use Them As Blankets (See above) Or Capes
  - Huge Flags Are Not Necessary (If you feel that you need a flag to identify you, small ones work just as well, and are less likely to offend people)
  - Just show the flag respect; dead nation, your nation, or otherwise, it's a basic courtesy to those who have/will/are living there
There is a WWII Memorial Mural between the two hotels, and as this fandom already doesn't have the most stellar reputation when it comes to simple etiquette, I'm formally requesting that no one takes photos at/around/or anywhere near the memorial. Such behavior is in poor taste, and neither your personal reputations, the Hetalia fandom, or even KumoriCon needs the bad press such behavior would bring.
In short, just use proper manners and show the memorial the respect such places deserve.
OK I think there was a mix up here with the photoshoots....
I had no clue you guys were planning a photo shoot here, Im not even in this thread so I didnt even think to look here...
I did NOT try and steal your photoshoots from you, I had made my on plans for a photoshoots on the official photoshot thread  On january 30. 2012. and Finalized the photoshoots on june 27.
Your photoshoot plans were settled in August 28 so there was no way I could of stolen your guys photo shoot.
So I hope this clears up anything... I cant stress it enough when I say there was a mistake between all of this..
Impromptu photoshoot plans happen all the time. We (my group and a bunch of others people we met at con) ended up planning a shoot in all of two hours on the last day, and got so many people. If that can happen with a shoot that isn't preplanned, having more than one shoot for a series at a single con that's PLANNED is also possible, and it doesn't always have to be the same people running them.  Maybe someone put together another photoshoot completely separate from yours, but they actually told the staff about it, and it ended up being put in the "official" schedule at the front desk. Miscommunication happens, but it doesn't necessarily mean that whoever is responsible for that photoshoot was actively trying to undermine anyone else.
I know that for me, personally, I don't normally attend large 'official' photoshoots for my fandoms because they tend to be alot of sitting around waiting for your character to be called, and then you're up there for five seconds to be photographed and then it's more sitting around for HOURS (in the hetalia fandom especially) while every other character is called. possibly in the hot sun, in a hot cosplay, on uncomfortable ground. So I tend to put together/attend smaller, less official-like side photoshoots where there are less pairing options, sure, but there's also less of the sitting around and more of the having fun.
Is it possible that a side shoot like that ended up 'supplanting' your official shoot by accident? YES.
Can you absolutely guarantee that the people running it were doing it out of spite or because they 'wanted to take your place'? NO.
Personally, all I can say is that maybe you can try again next year, and this time try and make sure that the staff at infodesk with the printed list KNOW that they are two separate photoshoots for the same series, run by two different groups of people?
/end my 2cents
I didn't know about any of this, since I was unable to attend any hetalia photoshoot (except a random one on day 3) due to other cosplays and taking longer than expected to get out of cosplays. Though I did hear some bad things, I do think that it's just some people put a photoshoot together and people just clumped with them and went. I have to say, for the past 3/4 years of cosplaying Hetalia at conventions..this year was the least enjoyable this year. I mainly blame it on only being able to be in Hetalia cosplay really late and only for panels/the ball and having other cosplays take up all of my time when not expected (as well as the fact that my contacts ripped).
I mean, I can't really say much on the matter since I was unable to be present at any Hetalia photoshoot. The Hetalia photoshoots at Sakuracon though ran smoothly (except for the fact I didn't like that about 8 people would repeat what I said even when I told them not to do that and that I could repeat myself if need be) so it makes me sad to hear things apparently didn't go well at Kumoricon?
All I can say is this; Hetalia cosplays/cosplayers for kumoricon this year seemed to have a hard time, and I really hope it doesn't make people leave Hetalia again. Because there's already been enough of that and it makes me really sad that a few things or a few people made things bad. The fandom as a whole isn't bad, just like any fandom. Though the worst parts of the fandom stick out the most, especially with our type of fandom. But there's still great things about hetalia, and a lot of wonderful things have come from the hetalia fandom.
I just hope things will be better next year, because I don't want to see an even greater decrease in the hetalia cosplay fandom, especially when it's good fans of hetalia (which most usually are). I know for a fact if I can help out next year, I'd help enforce the proper rules, because it seems a lot of people need a reminder. Same goes if I help run the Hetalia photoshoot(s) at Sakuracon, I will enforce your (Shi and Miria) rules. I will also make sure people know these rules at a Hetalia PJ Panel that I'm a part of at Akicon.
