I just thought I would ask this question because I personally missed the ball this year. I understand there might be reasons it Wasn't there but I was still a little sad. :'( :'(
-
I missed it too! And I had a cosplay with a dress this year!
-
Agreed. There should have been one. The raves got old after awhile. Mixing things up with a Masq. would have been a wonderful idea.
-
I wanted the ball. It would have been so fun.
-
Yea, I think I could've used a chill space to just relax and dance without going crazy XD If we have one next year, I will definitely get a tux/dress :D It'd be cool to use masks. Didn't they make that a requirement in '09?
-
What I would love is a ball where you have to dress nice but a mask isn't required- that'd be the best.
-
The ball was my favorite event of last year. I greatly missed it this year.
-
Ive never been able to go to a ball so i was looking forward to one this year, only to have my dreams dashed. Saddness
-
I actually enjoy balls more then raves. Rave get boring after awhile and a ball got class.
and I love the Cinderella like feeling

It would be awesome to have a ball! Though I think it wouldn't be masquerade because they had signs saying "NO MASKS" this year. Unless I was hallucinating... Which could be true because of the lack of sleep I had during the con. XD
-

That's how it was in 2010 afaik. I did dress check and I was told anyone with formal wear or cosplay was allowed in.
-

The no-mask rule was only in the hotel lobbies and parts of the hotel that are visible from the street, which is the rule in most hotels. It would be ok in an event room where the masquerade ball would be held.
-
^Oh! Thank you for the clarification on that. ^_^
-
I've actually been contemplating on whether or not I would submit the needed forms to run an official ball myself, so that we can have one. The idea of a ball is much more fun than a rave to me.

Please~? I'd be willing to help, but I don't know what or how I could contribute :p
-
Actually, our cosplay group, Cannot Unsee, is hoping to hold a Hetalia dance this year. Which would be open to everyone, really. We would basically be calling it the Congress Dance, in the vein of the balls held for the international congress at Vienna (in 1814) where they really just danced and didn't get much done. It would not have to be a masquerade. I'd love it if we could get together with anyone who is also thinking of hosting one, and try to get it to actually happen.
*pokes man-tune and says that he should find out her skype from fem!france so they can discuss it, maybe*
I would love to have a ball with formal or cosplay dress-code, and music that isn't rave music playing.
-
Who is man-tune? ^^;
-
Wa-kun, Washu, Manchiru, lady man that's ranma and slayers fan
-
This idea sounds like a lot of fun! I think I'll need to look on YouTube for some videos of it to get a better idea...
My girlfriend, if she's able to make it, would absolutely love this! Plus, if I can finish my Shizuo Heiwajima cosplay by then, I can wear that underneath my Org. XIII coat (my Luxord cosplay) for that enhanced formal-wear look! Brilliant!
Also, the KH group (KH PJ Party {2010} and KH 101 {2011} panels) was wanting to try to do a dance for Kcon 2011, but we decided on a panel instead. Oh well...

Well, when we get closer, (assuming that it'll be me doing it at all) you'd have to remind me that you'd be willing to help out.

Well, it's nice to see that I can be summed up in one sentence, I guess... ;D
-
A ball would definitely be better than a rave.
-
Having a ball next year would be amazing.
this past k-con was my first con, along with most of my friends, and we we're really bummed that there wasn't a ball, mostly because we'd heard so much about it, and we even took the time to do some formal cosplays.
If there's a ball this year, I will cry of happiness ;*;
-
Well, then I've decided. I SHALL SUBMIT THE PAPERWORK NEEDED FOR HOSTING A BALL!!!
I'm guessing that the paperwork won't be available until January or so... I'm hoping to get enough ideas from people by then to know what to aim for.
:D <-- Reaction to this decision.
-
i've never liked raves and realy wanted to go to the ball but there wasnt one ;-; i want one but there has to be a person cap cuz it was WAY to crowded 2010
-
Yay! If its decided that we are indeed having one, i think a fall themed ball would be cool. Or a masked ball, ive always wanted to do to one.
-
I wsa thinking about a masquerade ball, too. However, once the paperwork is submitted, I was also thinking about making a thread for people to make recommendations for themes, and such.
-
Thats a good idea
-
Thank you. It will probably be in the Panels area though, once I get things rolling.

Don't worry, I will :D

Yea, I was going to suggest getting another thread going. I think we should just start one now; the earlier the better, you know?
-
BALL BALL BALL!
-
*throws a ball for teddy* go get it!
-
I spoke with the Director of Programming recently. She told me that the form for the ball this year will have themes and other things listed that will help determine which Ball will happen. Even though I said that I'll host the ball, I'd like to encourage anyone who thinks they could do the job to fill out the form, once it becomes available. The more people that submit a form, the more likely it is that a great idea will be found.
-
I may do that then. And i was thinking, what about a wonderland theme?
-
I would do it if others would do it with me :D
I love the wonderland theme.
Kingdom Hearts wanted to do the ball this last year but it was a no go.
theres a disney theme too maybe?
-
Oooh! Teddy gave me an idea! Why not just do a disney theme? That way anyone can dress up as a disney character and come. And kingdom hearts would work too, cuz disney and square enix both own rights over the game (right?) I love you teddy!
-
I love you too Tala!
:D
i'll admit that i think it would be cool to do a Pokemon hosted ball xD
but i'll ask doe if she wouldn't mind us doing the kingdom hearts ball thing.
EDIT: A CROSSOVER BALL?
-
I think a crossover ball would be cool.
If you stuck with one theme, it'd give people a wrong idea. I say just a simple Cosplay Ball. Themes would just cause possible limitations for people who don't have cosplay for that theme.
-
Its more like a hosted thing more than a theme.
-
From what i remember, anyone in cosplay can attend, but the theme is just like a guideline rather than a must. I just think disney would be great, cuz then we can have all the disney remixes playing, and disney movies playing on a screen in the background. And then decorations could be like fog and stars and such.
-
Oh. That makes more sense. ^^;; I do apologize for sounding like a [censored].
The ideas are great! ^^
-
XD did you censor yourself?
-
@Tala: Yes, I censored myself so I won't get in trouble. XD
-
@chromo lol! It should censor on its own but i loved that you did it yourself
-
:D This conversation has gotten extra amusing since my last post...
-
Luvan1me was planning on seeing about the ball for KH this year.

I love this idea. It sound like so much fun XD
But a question: Who will be the faces of the event? Spokes person, for lack of better wording. During the Ouran ball a couple years back, they had the entire Host club kind of be the centerfold of the crowd; they were the talkers, the introducers, and, well, the hosts. For a Disney themed, what character would we want to take on that role, and who'd be willing to dedicate a cosplay for it?
-
Well don't forget hun,
Luvan wants to try and do the Kingdom Hearts Host Ball again this year.
-
Personally, I think a con ball shouldn't focus on a single series, ya know? I know for me, if the ball has an emphasys on something I don't know, or like, I probably wouldn't want to go.
I was thinking about having my theme being more diverse, perhaps having it focus on 90's anime music, or classic ball music that has been remixed to sound more video game friendly.
-
I agree. While it would be cool to have "hosts" and such, that puts responsibility on the people cosplaying that series and it also could cause confusion to people cosplaying other series. If I were cosplaying a fancy Cantarella Kaito cosplay it would probably ward me off having a Disney theme. Not that I don't like Disney, but I would #1 not really fit in with a specific theme so probably avoid it #2 People who don't follow the forums and just look at the schedule might just see "Disney Ball" and think only Disney characters are allowed and not even read the description (assuming there is one) describing anybody could come.
Though... maybe there could be a way to do it with a theme, like having the room decorated like the ball room in Beauty and the Beast. **shrug** either way, that's my 0.02 dollars.
-
I also agree. Don't get me wrong, I like disney and KH, but having the ball focus on a single series, or something of the like, kinda puts me off of going. People might not even like the series, or know what it's about, and may not want to go. The theme should be more mainstream, something all-around that people would want to go to. Something like just a simple formal, and then the night would play its self out. You could have characters from many different series be the 'hosts' of the ball- they don't have to be from the same series, and that way I think more people would enjoy it, and it would capture a wider range of people to attend.
-
Well, when you put it like that... I get that calling it a Kingdom Hearts Masquerade or a Sailor Moon Masquerade or something like that might make it seem like you have to know about the series or dress in that fashion, but you might get the same idea if it was called something like the Anime Hunters Masquerade. Now, if it were changed to something like "the Masquerade Ball hosted by the (insert group name here)," then people would see that it was just a regular masquerade ball, but that it was going to be hosted by a certain group that has a certain theme (like the Kingdom Hearts group, for example) and that might have a special little intro to perform for the attendees. I think that would lessen the number of people who would be discouraged to go because they aren't familiar with the series being associated with the event.
(This might need revising later, as I was typing this while watching a new episode of a show, heh.)
-
That's a fantastic idea. : )
-
@Hawk: They did that with the ball that the Ouran Highschool Hostclub hosted and I heard from a few people that they didn't go because they thought it was just nothing but Ouran. I think a simple title like "KumoriBall" or "Masquerade Ball" or something like that would be fine . Nothing to theme-like, I guess?
-
Even saying hosted by Disney or kingdom hearts might scare some away in some instances. If someone is cosplaying as either of those and does not want to host then they avoid the ball. Just a consideration and certainly not as big of a consideration as naming it the "Disney Ball" or something along those lines.
-
But what I'm saying about the group name is that it's just the name of the group. I mean, if it were hosted by the Anime Hunters, for example, you wouldn't expect people to think they need to come dressed like Zach and Dane, right? (I know that's a bit of an extreme example, but it helps demonstrate my point.)
-
I know what you mean and in that case, come up with a group name that is distinguishable. :)
-
The name of an anime/video game is different than the name of a popular group, though.
-
I like the idea of a Masquerade with "hosts" like when the Ouran Host Club did it (I volunteered as an official host that night) and I think it would be really cool to have the Hetalia characters or any anime characters as hosting it since it IS an anime convention after all. People don't have to know the anime to enjoy the masquerade, you can even put a disclaimer like, "Don't know the hosts? That's okay, come enjoy dancing the night away anyway!" Or something in the pocket guide/program book ... It's not like the ball is centered around the anime that's hosting it. They'd just do a couple small gimmicks related to their anime to make it interesting to those who have seen the anime, but a gimmick where people can participate nonetheless if they know the anime or not... like finding Honey-Sempai's bunny and winning a dance. You didn't have to know the anime to find the bunny.
However if something is done like this though, or even hosts in general, there should be pre-con meetings to figure out what the hosts are going to do and dancing. That was the problem with the Ouran Hosts, is we only got to meet about an hour before the thing started to collaborate. Luckily we really only needed to learn the Waltz, pretty simple, the rest of the songs we just kind of danced to with others. Also the general hosts were kind of left out of the loop when it came to what stunts the main character hosts were going to pull. There should also be alot of pre-relations with convention staff. It was the first time it was done so we kept having to stop the dance to make announcements for staff, like about wearing shoes, fire codes, etc when all that should have been taken care of to begin with. And there were problems with some hosts getting down to the main events room before the event started as well, already cutting into the small practice time we had. I had to "argue" for a while with a Yoojimbo that I was a volunteer for the dance and I needed to get past the line and down into the event room to practice. Finally someone came to my rescue and told them they were going down as well to help and just to let me by, luckily they were staff. xD In fact, I believe that was you Washougal_Otaku. xD
-
Personally I'd like a masquerade one night, rave the next. Or the rave first, then the masquerade. Maybe have a panel before the masquerade to learn some basic dance? I would imagine many others would like the chance to brush up, go through an hour long crash course or such.
I agree with the hosting bit; Anyone else dressed as people from that series might feel like they might be approached by many people thinking they're hosting. I would personally find it interesting if the hosts were dressed as various incarnations of Kumori-tan.
-
I really would only attend a masquerade if it didn't have a set series of hosts... While that'd be cool and all, if it had the description or title say that it was a certain series, then I'd probably not go. With the pure assumption it's being put on much like the panels are, and isn't a 'main event' like the Raves are.
I'm not saying don't have hosts of a certain series, but also don't limit yourself to just that. If it's a theme of any kind, center the music around the theme. Not the hosts. That could be too demanding for those who'd have to cosplay those characters, and for anyone else who's cosplaying them- they would possibly get mistaken as one of the hosts, for example.
I mean, it's already a big undertaking to have a dance at all, let alone the 'requirements' for the masq balls. Why do you want to make it more chaotic? It'd be cool, yes. But you'd have to have a lot of people able to figure out ways to distinguish the hosts from the regular cosplayers, if it is from a series, and have all the hosts be in that similar style... It just seems too much like a hassle in my opinion. Which could result in the ball being poorly conducted, and thus wouldn't get people wanting to go, or stay to enjoy it.
A theme of 90's anime music would be cool :) If it had a title like "kumoriball" or "masquerade", something very simple like that, then I'd be much more likely to go.
-
Throwing this out there, if a staff member sees this, I'd love to get in on discussions about the masquerade/ball. I've got some ideas, and would like to hear others.
-
^ The best thing to do is to apply to run the ball yourself, or meet up with someone who has made a submission or plans to. You'd use the same form for panel submissions in order to apply to run the ball.
-
Please bring back the ball. I guess I just didn't understand the reason that I got for no ball. (there was no space for it) Instead of 2 raves couldn't one have been a ball instead.
Do we really need to sign up to run the ball? how would we even do that? not many people have the music equipment needed to do an event like this.
Are there any ideas out there? I tried to have an impromptu ball in the park last year but I ran into problems cause it would have cost a lot of money to get this in the park and the park was already in use by other organizations. :(
Please bring back the ball. I missed it a lot last year. :'(
-
My cosplay's going to be in a dress, so I really hope I'll be able to make it to the ball this year if there is one :-B
-
Just thought I should post a link to this here

^ Yeah, just saw that a few minutes ago. Good thing, too. :D ...not sure what I'll wear right now, though...
-
I still have two old Prom dresses in my closet, so that's an easy question for me. xD
