Title: Minecraft
Post by: Animeman73 on January 25, 2011, 10:14:23 am
In my travels across the internet I came across a rather interesting game called Minecraft, It's a survival/sandbox game where you have to build stuff and protect yourself from the various nasties in the game such as spiders, skeletons, and zombies. It's a game that can be single-player multi-player etc for a fee.

I created this thread for any and all Kumoricon goers who are Minecraft fans. If you have have any stories about Minecraft or any pictures place them right here.

Yup, I has Minecraft. My friend has a server, we kinda cheat a bit but it's still pretty fun just to see what you can make with tons of tiny blocks. Also making mine cart roller coasters is super fun.

I keep telling myself I'll get back into MineCraft again soon, then I don't.  D:

My brother got Minecraft and told me I'd like it, plus pretty much all of my male friends loved it, so I decided to play.

I LOVE THIS GAME TOO MUCH.

I always get lost in Minecraft, so I've started taking caps of the beautiful scenery I keep seeing.

I'm working on a full fledged city at the moment in classic mode, and I'll put the file up so you guys can take a look when it's done.

I think I am a full-blown addict right now, but I wont go into it. Right now I'm really wanting to find a good group of people to play with online, since single-player Minecraft can get a bit lonely at times. And to be honest, I've been watching the Yogscast video podcast on youtube, and I think Minecraft would be a lot more fun with people to play with.

By the by, having or at least knowing how to create a compass is really helpful when you are hopelessly lost in this game.

I've found it's been growing increasingly necessary to bring signs in order to map out my caves lately.  They take up a lot of space though. :P  I typically just bring 128 raw wood whenever I hit the caves nowadays and make a crafting block on the fly.  I usually try to bring 20-30 iron too in case I run out of tools or need to use carts/expand tracks or make a compass at some point.

I still want to know hoe get on Minecraft. The game looks fantastic but don't you have to download some kind of other web browser in order to play it?

My brother had me try this game and I don't really like it... :/ I guess I don't see the point of not having a real goal except to survive. I know a lot of people like it but I just can't get into it.

My brother on the other hand...yeah... He's really into it. He's pretty good, too. I sucked (this is not the reason I don't like it). I didn't even survive my first night in the game cause I didn't understand it at first.

The first time I played my brother explained the basics to me and basically gave me a tutorial then let me run free. Also it's easiest to play with enemies turned off, that's what I did.

Nope, it runs fine in Firefox and Google Chrome and I'd assume it runs fine in Internet Explorer or Safari fine as well.  There's also a downloadable client you can use which doesn't require you to have a browser open to play, just internet access so you can sign into your account.

It's a fun game. I just started playing a few weeks ago. I would post pics but the server I go on has some NSFW stuff on it. Its full of people that make more block art then buildings.

AT LAST!!! I'm on Minecraft and after 7 tries my 8th experiment is turning out reasonably well. I knew watching all those Minecraft Youtube videos would pay off for something.

Oh my dear, there is SO much more to Minecraft than to just survive. Minecraft is about creating and sharing your creations with others, not just surviving. You can create just about anything you want to if you set your mind to it. I myself am creating a floating skyport on the server I'm on.

I'll agree with that Doctor Whooves. I'm currently working on a nifty little place I like to call Fort Hope. It's going to be a fort with walls made of cobblestone. That includes Cobblestone towers.

Awesome! Since we're such a small server, we don't get many new players, especially ones who stick around after they've been whitelisted (not THAT many players on the server).

Also, RP on the server is encouraged, but it's not enforced. Mostly the RP really comes into play when we do RP events.

Also, if you haven't already done so, DON'T update to 1.6 yet. We're still using 1.5 until more patches come out from Buckett. :P

Anyone here know how to create a multiplayer type game and make it say...white-list exclusive that kind of thing?

I wound up having to find a 1.5 .jar file and manually patching my .minecraft folder back to 1.5, then it took some work to get it not to update automatically, but I did get it working.

@Animeman: the easiest way to make a private server is to just limit who the IP address is distributed.  I'm not sure how to make it so that only whitelisted users can log in.

When I get the chance Charlie, I need to show you the dungeon that spawned under the sand off the coast of my outpost. (The spawner is still there too)

Just wanted to stick my server (http://www.dangazzm.com) into the list. {its 1.6.6 as of tonight}
Also, its really simple to make a server white list only. server.properties -> white-list=true
Then add the usernames of the people you want to allow in, into whitelist.txt

Downgrading isn't difficult, you just need to replace %appdata%/.minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar with whatever version you want to use.

Anyways, just puttin my name out there if anyone needs a plugin developer/server admin :P

I found one of those once, then it didn't even have a chest in it. :/

I've found dungeons in the Minecraft universe. I usually set down torches in all the direction the monster spawner creates them then use a stone pick to hack the generator to pieces. Then I go after the loot.

If you stop the spawner from spawning using torches, it's usually more beneficial to leave it.  After you grab the loot, you can set up a mob grinder using cacti and flowing water that will harvest the monster drops for you.

edit: for creepers and zombies, a 3-block deep pit is also a sufficient mob trap; let them collect in the pit, then you can safely attack them with a sword
