We will be doing a cosplay photo shoot on Jan 15 at a small theater.
Jan 15, noon-4pm at Profile Theatre - 3430 SE Belmont Street, Portland (BTW this is right on the bus 15 line)

It is a small theater, "black box" style, so the floor, ceiling and walls are black and there is seating on 3 sides. The stage is not raised (well actually sometimes it is, but it won't be when we are there), so picture the stage being on the floor level, while the seats are raised around it stadium-style. There are 2 dressing rooms that we can use, a small one right next to the stage, and a larger one that is a little farther away.
There will be a few pieces of furniture there: a small couch, some chairs and benches. We can use these or move them out of the way. Their stage manager will be there to supervise. We will also be allowed to bring our own props and other items if we want to, so think about what you want to bring.
We will be allowed to change their lighting, but only by changing the brightness of the various lights, we cannot move or re-aim the lights. This shouldn't be a problem. We can also bring our own photographic lighting, which I will do.
There is no charge to participate in this event. This is not an official Kumoricon function, and I am not associated with Kumoricon. This is just something I'm arranging for fun.
People appearing in the photos that I take at these photo shoots are welcome to freely use the photos for any purpose they wish, including posting them online, making prints, etc. People who use my photos must credit me as the photographer. In return, I can also freely use my photos for any purpose, including posting them to my own web sites, or any other use.
If you want to bring a camera and take your own photos at the event you are free to do so.
There will be a limit of 20 people for this event (including me and an assistant). So far the list is:

We can't really leave MEWcon cause we have a booth in the AA this year, so any time during the con wouldn't work out so great D:

I'm going to Mewcon and I've never been to one of your shoots so I think that would be super fun~! I agree it probably shouldn't be during con events though but if it's unavoidable, I wouldn't mind making time. And umm...yeah! If this happens, I can't wait~! :D

OK, I'm starting to think we should try for the next weekend (Jan 8-9), so there won't be any conflicts. The rest of January won't work for me. So who would be able to do it then?
If we rent the theater they will charge around $200, so we would need quite a few people to make that worth it. If it's a big group, that would be super fun. If it's a small group we can have it somewhere else. If we are paying for a location I'd like for everyone to chip in something towards the fee.

I'd love to do this again, though if it's during M.E.W I can't T-T Since i'm gonna be busy all week and through the con. Since I'm Main events manager I can't leave the space till an event is going on and doesn't need me, but that's only like maybe 30 mins at max of break time. lol I'd totally be up for it the next weekend though and i'll chip in for rent; about how much? Cause I think I could get maybe 20 dollars to chip in (i'll need to sell some things XD) But yah i'll chip in as much as I can. ^-^ Because I would love to do a shoot in a theater O.O

Me and the homies definitely want another delicious shoot with you but it'd have be before or during MEW. Taking pictures at night would actually be really cool considering the costumes we'll likely wear.

would there be snow anywhere nearby by any chance? I have two cosplays that would be PERFECT with snow, but of course there's none down here next to the ocean.
And a night shoot would be pretty cool, as long as we have light to take pictures I think that'd be awesome! Would the theatre still be available at night? it would be nice to keep everyone out of the cold..

I think it might be worth exploring several things
1: for the people who can't make it Jan 8 or 9, we can try to do something the evening of Dec 30. If that would be a small group (like 5 max) we could have it at my house and avoid the cost of renting a place. if there are more than that we would rent a place. I'm not sure what would be available at that time but I'll look into it.
2: for those who can come Jan 8 or 9, I will see if the theater is available one of those days, and I'll post more info once I know what the situation is.
3: some people have mentioned doing a snow shoot. I think that's a great idea visually. Snow in Portland is highly unpredictable, and when it does come it usually goes along with icy roads that make transportation hazardous. If we happen to get perfect conditions in Portland we could do it but that would be short notice. Maybe we need a Cosplay Snow Photoshoot Rapid Response Team :)
The best way to guarantee snow would be to go up to Mt. Hood. A shoot at Timberline could be spectacular. I drive a 4WD Jeep and I'm very good at driving in snow. I could take up to 3 passengers. More than that and we'd need additional vehicles. If anyone wants to do that, we could try to set that up for some time in February.

OK, so here is what I know so far. Unfortunately, the theater plan is definitely not going to happen Jan 8-9, because they are having rehearsals then. I still want to try to do this some time later. I will look into other options for that weekend.

OK, it looks like the theater will quite probably be available Saturday Jan 15, noon to 4 pm. I really hope we can make this happen, it will be an amazing opportunity to do cosplay photos in a cool environment! Let me know if you could make it to this.

OK, I'm happy because both of these photo shoots are seeming like they are very likely to happen (90%+ probability). But in situations like this where location rental must be arranged, I will not say it is 100% until a contract is signed. I hope that will happen soon. (For those who don't know, renting a theater is not a simple thing, it involves contracts and insurance, and various stuff that is somewhat tricky to arrange.)
The photo shoot on Jan 15th at the theater will be limited to a maximum of 20 people. I don't think that will be any problem, because so far less than 20 people have said they would come to it.

These are not official Kumoricon events. I do not work for Kumoricon and I'm not affiliated with them. I'm doing this because I like Kumoricon and the local cosplay community, and this is a chance to do something fun for everyone.

For Dec 30th, don't worry about it, I'll cover that one, no donations needed. For Jan 15 at the theater (assuming that happens), it is looking like the total cost will be around $250. (I originally thought it would be closer to $200 but it turned out to be more once everything was included.)

In terms of renting a theater, it is a bargain.
For me it is a real expense, and I may not do it again, but having a photo shoot in a theater is something I've wanted to do for a long time, and I've learned to take these kinds of opportunities when they are available.

If that happens, can he and I come to the Jan 15th shoot? He might not have a cosplay and might just sit and watch but I'm not sure. I'll have to talk to him about it.

I'm definitely going to make my way up for the Jan 15th shoot, especially since I missed the last one. It'll most likely be as the Doctor. Anyone wanna be my companion? I don't mean in the Inara Serra sense :3 You could see the universe~ I must warn you that there is an awful lot of running to do, though!
I'll be happy to help with any of the photographers' lighting or anything else, especially since I'm a TA major and I'm supposed to know things like this nowadays :]
And Tom, I really ought to bring you lunch or something. It's really great that we can all get together and do this, and it's even better that you're putting together this theater thing.

Quick update: I'm happy to report that the shoot on Dec 30th at the studio has been confirmed, so this will definitely happen.
Tomorrow I will try to finalize things for the shoot on Jan 15 at the theater.
Brief summary for Dana: planning 2 cosplay photo shoots, Dec 30 from 7-10pm at a photo studio (confirmed) and Jan 15 from noon-4pm at a small theater (not yet confirmed but very likely). You've been to a previous shoot with me so you know how it works, but these are indoors so we can set up more equipment, computers, lights etc. Hope you can make it.

If you mean the studio, it is 917 NW 19th in Portland. The funny thing about the place is that it is a great place but it is at the end of a very scary looking alley. Like if it was in an anime, and the characters went into an alley like this, you would just know for sure that someone was about to get attacked by a vampire because that's the only thing that could possibly happen there. But it's completely safe, really.
If you mean the theater, I will only give out info after negotiations are complete and everything is finalized. That is just how these things work.

Are you by chance going to be at Akicon. I would love to do a shoot. I hope to be off work by that time on the 30th but I am not sure if I can be and even if I am I need to be at the hotel to help set up.

There will be a set there for the performance they are doing that night -- I haven't seen it yet but they say it will be some kind of basic "living room" type furniture. But we will be allowed to move things around if they are in our way. Their stage manager will be there to supervise. When you think of possible backgrounds for the photos, these will be some of the choices:
- black background - this could probably work for almost any costume
- black background plus whatever objects we bring in
- a living room type set
- a long narrow hallway (just outside the stage area)
- rows of seats in the background (shooting from the stage towards the audience)
- dressing room with mirrors

I can bring my own black and medium-gray backgrounds, and then we can also choose one other color from what the studio has on hand. So if there is a color you think would be especially good for people's costumes, please let me know and I'll see if that is available.
It is also possible to roll up the background and shoot against the bare wall, which is basically white. So far I haven't tried that, but it seems like it would work.
Last time we also took some shots in the alley outside the studio after we were all finished inside. An example looks like this:

That picture looks very green because the opposite wall is green and I was bouncing the flash off of the wall on purpose.

Maybe you could get a ride with someone? Or if you need to leave early to be sure you catch your bus, you don't have to stay all the way to 10pm, you could leave at 9 or something.

If you arrive right at 7pm it should be very obvious, because I'll be there unloading equipment from my Jeep and moving it into the studio. If you arrive late, you may need to knock on the door to be let in. I think the outer door always locks.
If you are driving there, do not park in the alley, it is only for loading/unloading. But there is usually parking within 1 or 2 blocks of there.

It's funny, because I know we're just taking photos like we have many times before, but on the other hand I can sort of understand their point of view. They haven't met me, and looking at it from the outside, it probably does seem like a weird thing.
I'm sorry about having the shoot be late, I would have liked to have it during the day, but that didn't fit with my work schedule. I'll try to have future shoots be earlier.

On all your own posts in the upper right corner there's a "Modify" button, which allows you to edit your posts.
It would be easier if you could also edit your first post on the first page with all the updated info about the shoots and such, so people can just look there.

I went to the theater earlier today to take a look at what is there. It is not a full set, it is very minimal, with just a few pieces of furniture: a couch, some chairs and benches. We can rearrange and use those or move them out of the way. But mostly it is plain black walls and floor. This is good because it means there won't be a "themed" background that might conflict with some of the cosplays.

I was banking my being able to get to the shoot on my having a car, but an interesting story involving promises not being kept and someone being a **** for no good reason has resulted in my not having one by now. I might not be able to attend, which will be a shame of epic proportions.

There is no charge to come to this. I'm paying for the theater rental. If people feel they can afford it and would like to contribute something towards the rental cost, that would be nice, but it is not required. I'd much rather have more people come to this and have fun, than have anyone drop out because of money.

I'm not sure, because I don't know what you have available. Bring things that would look interesting in a photo . . . I like props that the person can hold (folding fan, etc.) especially if they suggest a larger context around the action (martini glass, notebook, flashlight . . .).
If you have some kind of rug we could unroll on the floor, that might be interesting, otherwise the floor will just be black.

I'm doing my original Steampunk Cheshire Cat, who is an assassin who specializes in swords. And there are others doing Steampunk, which is why I wanted the guns as well.
Also bringing Kaito.
And sword wise, I think anykind is good. But any that look more fancy would be great ^^

About contributing money . . . I really appreciate that people are willing to chip in towards this, I think that's great. But it turns out it's no longer necessary for this event. In a weird coincidence, a company that made a mistake in their records quite a while ago wrote me today, saying that they figured out that actually they owe me money and they're going to send it to me, and the amount is enough to cover all the costs of this photo shoot. For this to happen unexpectedly and so soon before the shoot seems like a "sign" (poetically, at least). So I don't want anyone to pay anything, please just show up and have fun. Take the money you would have contributed to this and use it towards your next Kumoricon badge or something like that.

Two off topic things:
1. Alan Wake is a really fun game, well worth playing. The gameplay is somewhat generic but the story is great, and the concert stage scene is really epic (can't really say more without spoilers).
2. It's so funny to try to explain the concept of a cosplay photo shoot to someone who has never heard of any of this. Conversation tonight with a friend:
Her: So, these random people, they make costumes . . .
Me: well, yes
Her: of things they have seen in cartoons or something . . .
Me: well, yes, basically
Her: and then they all meet up
Me: exactly
Her: and take photos of this
Me: yes, exactly
Her: and that's it?
Me: Yes
Her: [really, really long awkward pause. She gives me the biggest WTF look ever, like she was about to say "come on, tell me what it *really* is," but thought better of it.] . . . You know how weird that sounds to a normal person like me. . .
Me: No, I actually don't see what's so weird about it. It's being creative, like any other hobby like painting or knitting or whatever.

For Saturday, if you haven't been to the Profile Theatre before, it is right next door to a place called the Tao of Tea. If you're coming in from the Belmont street side, you go in through some double doors into a lobby area. Go straight ahead and you will see another set of glass doors straight across at the other end of the lobby. Go through those doors and immediately turn left. Walk to the end of the hallway and turn right. Follow the hallway to the end and turn right again, and you will be at the entrance to the theater area.
There is also a back door on the opposite side of the building from the Belmont street entrance, and it is actually much closer to the main theater area, but it is usually locked and you can only go out, not in. But at the beginning I'll probably be over there bringing the photo gear into the theater, so we may have that door open too for a little while.

So, I have the sword (somebody wanted it), I have 3 candle holders, one has a candle, but I don't know if I can find other candles, I found a fake bloody arm, and I grabbed a string of light (I think they are purple.). I don't know if I can grab any table cloths, so if anybody can bring some that would be great. Were there any other props I was supposed to look for?
And does anybody has a silver platter looking thing, or just a plate or something I can put the arm on?

Oh yeah -- complete change of subject -- also it was fun after the shoot to talk about skateboarding with boogiepop, and then see her awesome video gaming skills at the Avalon. She was really good at Time Crisis 4 even with a semi-broken gun controller that shot nowhere near where you were aiming.

I thought the theater was a great place to have a photo shoot. It could be possible to have another one there some day. It is a little tricky to arrange though, because a lot of the time they need the space for their own rehearsals and performances. We were lucky to find a time that worked out.

Props? I didn't go to this(i will for the next one though ;3), but i can say that props are always good with photos (in my opinion at least).

Maybe more like time slots kinda thing. So we can make sure that people get equal times to get pictures. And then have a free time where if people have ideas and want more pictures, they can get it then.
And also, if we can get more photographers to come, even if they're not "professional", just so we can take more pictures in the short amount of time. Especially when we have more than three groups.
