Best anime of the season or best anime of all time?
Discuss.
-
I don't like the animation style, too much exactly like powerpuff girls, not that it is horrible. The dialog and scenes were great, however. If it was a more realistic rendering I would possibly watch more then 8 minutes.
-
Stripper transformation is best transformation.
-
I have no idea what this anime is about but I like its name.
-
Haven't seen it, but I think Sahara is wanting me to cosply it with her...
-
WATCH IT THEN COSPLAY IT.
-
Shay would be stocking.
-
I've been discussing cosplaying it with a friend too, depends on if the show keeps being excellent. If so I'd be doing Panty at next years Akicon.
-
The advisor from my anime club showed me a preview of this; it looks funny as all happy heck!
-
This isn't anime. It's American cartoons with Japanese language dubs. sigh.
But then Gendy Tartakosky isn't exactly American either....
I don't think you can make me follow this show.

How is it not anime?

ALL OF MY RAGE.
I love it. The art style, animation, music, premise, and characters are all fantastic. Its dry humor may not be uproariously funny but the show's already off to a creative and sharp start. I'm glad that it's not animated completely in the style of the transformation sequence, then it'd be the same old, same old; what was cool about it was how unexpected it was.
-
Anime= animation originating in Japan
That's like saying Avatar: The Last Airbender isn't American because it's style looks like it was influenced by anime, or that Wakfu isn't French because they have Kawaii desu eyes.
-
wow this is TOTALLY a japanese anime XDDD it's really um ._. creepy <.< gross... and really sexual for my taste ._. i don't like that T_T it just reminds me of the type of american crappy shows that just happen at night in adult swim (not family guy though <3) yea ._. this is just too much for me sorry! >.< i love my more mature or "happier" anime. i guess ._. don't kill meh! ;A;
-
I WANNA WATCH.
-

Describe this more mature or "happier" anime you speak of? As far as I can tell, while the humor is a bit 'in your face and raunchy,' most anime I see has the same sexual language if not being less mature with its child like way the characters say their feelings. Everything else I kind of agree with you on, and I know there is happy anime out there.
I would like to see some anime with as much language or fanservice as the high school shows, only with an adult cast and things adults have problems with. I've seen enough school dramas, if you know of something that is actually for an older audience I would like to hear about it. No H please, I would like some adult ecchi anime, but I've no interest in going so far as to watch anything pornographic.
-
it's the fact that's it's def in your face kind of sexual humor. and it's not much of humor compared to the way family guy or some other shows protray "sex". in a way other shows poke fun at it. this show kinda just i donno ._. i watched a few episodes and i really can't stand it. it's too much of the sexual content. -_-" i guess the kinda shows i like are like more "serious" in terms of the storyline. like they actually have a plot that sort of draws my interest. for example kekkaishi, soul eater (not so much anymore lol), hitman reborn, haruhi suzumiya (it was strange at first but at least it was less of the in your face kinda stuff and it was balanced out with someone who can at least had some sense ._. lol poor kyon), inuyasha (not so much sexual content but a few jokes with moroku (sp) srsly he needs to stop -_-"), cowboy beebop (was a bit sexual but yet again not as obscene except with faye, she was cool but needs to stop the butt showing <-<), FLCL (YES it was very SEXUAL but i had some laughs out of it, and it took me a while to understand some of it lol and i understood the series, and there was something more there. it just drew my attention and it got me interested i guess cuz it had some mystery about it (at least they were more properly dressed! lawlz XDDD), neon genesis evangelion (was a VERy good manga. loved the plot and characters <3 and this story really kept me on the edge of my seat a lot X3) and there are many others! i loved chobits too but some parts were just >_< *slaps hand to forhead* it was a subtle way to get the more "sexy" appeal of manga/anime to me i guess.
but i can see you're argument there though!
the "happier" anime i guess i speak of is like the more children targeted shows, like pokemon (jap.), miyasaki films <3 (really wish he could make anime ;~;), fantastic children (that was a beautiful work of art).
-
Well the humor is not that Panty is having sex, (Which we never see. Just the post sex.) but that she is a supposed angel on a mission to destroy these "ghosts" and she is far more interested in the chasing of men and having of the sex. The joke is the dichotomy of the whole thing. It is the same joke with Stocking's love of sweets compared to her interest in the mission.
-
yes i understand that joke >.< it's just the content around it T_T i would watch this if maybe it were a bit less ._. i donno maybe the fact that it looks like the powerpuff girl's style -_-" and that children mindset is set in there cuz of that....
-
miyasaki films <3 (really wish he could make anime ;~;)
Two things:
1. His films are still anime, just not tv series.
2. He has done several tv series in his earlier days, such as Sherlock Hound, Future Boy Conan, Heidi Girl of the Alps, and Anne of Green Gables. They're all quite good for their genres.
-
Awesome anime. Stocking is my twin.
And luvan1me, are you basically saying that you don't like perverted stuff? It's hard to tell with all the emoticons.
-
@man of the public: yes i do <_< i actually watched anne of green gables when i was a kid -_-" i just wished he would do more) and i meant not movies -_-"
@fleur: nope :P i love pervy things just not this ... out there -_-" it's just the fact that's it's drawn in a way that it just gives me the mind set "powerpuff girls....little girls..." yea... had my deal with pedo stuff -_-"
-
Brief is my favorite character. The second and third episodes have been great. Well the second half of the third was made of "What this is, I don't even". but good.
-
Oh god the second half of the third episode... It was worth it for Stocking turning into Rena from Higurashi for a short while.
Also the more of this show I watch, the more I love Stocking. I was to cosplay every single one of her outfits.
-
It's not really a reliable source, but after seeing the folks over on 4chan's /a/ board rage about this show, i was somewhat put off watching it.
Is it actually any good?
-
Pft they're dumb. Panty & Stocking is genuinely fun to watch for the silly art, hilarious dialogue, and ridiculous plots. It's like watching an old cartoon from my childhood, but suited to my current tastes.
Also, poop jokes.
-
Without those jokes it might be watchable. That first episode ending ruined the rest of the show for me :/
-
The one episode I watched was humorous to me...this is one my G/F & I will probably be keeping an eye on lol. Would be great to see some cosplayers from this at con.
For some reason it kinda reminds me of the Clerks animated series...
-

You don't know how /a/ works do you? They will continually bitch about moderately good to amazing.

EP. 6, We got Villians now.
-
So, I finally watched the first episode; not bad, the first half was better. The music is terrible. I can't seem to download any other episodes from where I usually get my downloaded anime; they get saved as HTML documents, for some reason...
-
I accept that your opinion about the music is wrong.
-
You think I should've been more honest about it? Because I was holding back about the "quality" of the music; I just didn't want to upset anyone.
-
Quite frankly I love the music, it's so much different from most anime I watch. The OP is fun and happy, and having an English ED is super interesting. The ED is the kind of thing I could have my non-anime friends listen to, plus it's simple to sing along with.
Plus "Fly Away" is freaking amazing. I was that song to play every second of my life.
-
I think you need to watch more anime, then, because I hear it quite a bit. Either way, though, it's still poor music.
And don't you mean "I want" instead of "I was"? I'm pretty sure that you were never a song. ;D
-
The music is a perfect reflection of the series itself.
See P&Sw/GB has the theme of contrast and contradictions.
In the show itself's main contrast is it's art style (a fast moving, cartoonish style) to it's content (Two "angels" who run the gambit of mortal sins, use ultra-violence to "save" the town from evil). The music reflects this (Outside of the OP, that's just a fun yet generic OP), as the music is normally quick, fun, up beat, dance or "club" beat that is used to choreograph the ultra violent fights. Even the Ending theme is a contrast, as it sounds like a fun little pop song, is set to scenes of the angels being tortured and finally killed in the end.
TL;DR:
The music isn't terrible, as it perfectly fits within the themes and style of the show.
-
The music is terrible.
-
The music is terrible.
That is not a valid argument. Why do you think that?
-
The music is terrible.
I disagree with this statement.
-
The music is terrible.
That is not a valid argument. Why do you think that?
*sigh* Fine, you wanna know why? Here I go...
1 - It was obnoxious noise. I don't typically care for music that sounds like a digital file that's been corrupted. That's what it sounded like.
2 - It reminded me of a dance club where everyone is taking some sort of drug, perhaps multiple drugs. No thanks.
3 - It's simple, in terms of music level. I prefer music made by musical instruments, not a computer. Computer sound effects can be a benefit, but when the entire thing sounds like it was made by a program instead of blood, sweat, & tears, it's not music.
4 - It was so annoying that I wanted to fast forward through it. It was so annoying that I didn't even bother listening to the ending theme. As soon as it started, I hit the stop button and went on watching football.
Is that sufficient for you, or would you like more?
-
This anime would be LOADS BETTER if Beethoven's 5th was playing for all the fight scenes. It perfectly fits the style of the show and everything.
JUST SAYIN'.
-
^ I could see that...
-
There are no words.
-
...and?
-
Not about the song, about my seething loathe for your opinion on this subject.
-
...because I'm right?
-
Cause you're so stubborn. It makes you look bad.
-
Well, actually, it's you who's appearing to be stubborn. You couldn't handle my different opinion, nor did you like my reasoning. Your constant questioning of my rights makes you look bad. You make me want to stop watching the show, you're pushing it so badly. Are you happy now?
-
I never questioned your reasoning, I may not enjoy your opinion, and I did (albeit out of a sense of humor) said it was wrong. I wasn't questioning your rights, as much as I was clarifying my use of "there are no words". I apologize for being quite so aggro with my stubborn comment.
(Note: I had a fairly aggressive response here at first, but I decided that it wasn't worth any perceived disrepect. Thus I changed it, to reflect my true feelings on this debate.)
-
Ya know, I respect that response of yours. Nicely done, Viking...

To be on topic: New episode is great...♥ the randomness of this show lol.
-
^ I'm hoping to find a place that'll allow me to download the episodes, since my regular place only seems to have the first one working properly.
-
Or you could just watch them streaming like the rest of us.
-
...maybe I'll just wait to rent it from Netflix, or something.

I guess you'll be seeing it in a few years then, huh.

-
Why do you say that? Look at Hetalia. FUNimation picked it up in January; now it's on the shelves. It'll most likely be out by KCon '11.
-
Yes, but Hetalia was based on a manga that's been running since 2006, has a worldwide fanbase and is insanely popular. Panty and Stocking just came out, isn't based on any pre existing material, hasn't even finished it's first season yet, and is at most a niche title which hasn't quite found a huge fanbase yet.
I'd be surprised with it gets dubbed anytime soon.
-
Well for one their target demographics are completely different.
APH demo is preteen-teens, mostly girls. This demo has a huge disposable income, thus a studio like Funimation, would want to turn the product around quickly to encompass the fandom at it's hieght.
Whereas P&Sw/GB has a much more niche fandom at the moment. Also it's Demo appears to be mostly made up of college students and post college adults. A demographic that does not have the same type of disposable income to throw away on anime with. These people are also the most likely to pirate.

Good point. Oh wel, I can still wait.
-
So guys do you think Scanty and Kneesocks will be back this week?
-
If not this week, soon.
-
What I'm wondering is if it'll go back to the two-episodes format like most Western cartoons, or if it'll continue with the same story.
-
DOUBLE POSTING BECAUSE OF NEW EPISODE TODAY.
-
Just wondering: Which episode would you guys recommend to someone as a good episode to hook them?
The one episode I saw left me kinda "Meh," but I did like the dark humor and would want to try again.
-
Personally, I got hooked into watching it from episode 2...however, I have enjoyed all of the episodes so far.
-
^ But, in episode 1, they fought a giant poo! That's awesome!

Episodes 2 and 4 are great. 6 is where we start to see some resemblance of a plot and 7 well you'll just have to see.
-
I like the outfits in the second part of 7 haha.
-
The soundtrack for the anime has released samples for all the songs that will be on the cd! So here you go. :]
http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/m-serve/-/Discography/A010090/VTCL-60236.html
-
Samples? So like only parts of the song?
-
Yeah, but there are a few new songs on the list you can sample the music from. :] Like what sounds like the theme music for a new character coming up!
-
Oh God this series....Hahaha.
If I see any cosplayers related to this I will ♥ you forever.
-
There are a few in this thread ;D
And Merina I can't wait for the OST to come out, it comes out December 29th.
SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR
-
Katie what are you talking about? It's much too far, not close at all! ;A;
-
It's this month! Better than when the series first started.
-
Yes, that's true. You're right. xD
And am I the only one who wasn't too...impressed with this week's episode? I like the last 4-5 minutes though, haha;;
-
At first I thought it was going to be dumb (Jameson told me about it before I saw it) but I actually liked it haha.
The Chuck episodes were hilarious simply because they were each based on a different director and it was so obvious.
I LOVED the music video.

Yeah the Music Video from episode 10 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYHNrwg4jJs) is awesome!
-
Honestly, this show is hilarious. Was really surprised, expecting something crappy like every other show that people tell me is amazing. Before this, I had never seen a Japanese show with the kind of humor most American cartoons use.
-
Dear Gainax,
What the **** just **** happened?
-

"If we build a long pole, we could walk up it . . ." For some reason I loved that bit, it reminded me of Monty Python. :D
-
Dear Gainax,
What the **** just **** happened?
-
SERIOUSLY.
Me and Kyle were like, "AWWW, what cute end!" And then we just sat there with our mouths wide open and threw our hands in the air in confusion.
-
SERIOUSLY.
Me and Kyle were like, "AWWW, what cute end!" And then we just sat there with our mouths wide open and threw our hands in the air in confusion.
I was like literally rocking back and forth in my chair trying not to make random noises like an infant, and then the end happened and I was like "WHAT"
-
That end.. exploded my brain.
-
It is a Gainax show, so I saw something like that coming.
-
Not watching it myself, I wantred to chime in that since it's Gainax so that pretty much settles the question that it *is* anime, as far as how AMV contests would define anime vs. non-Japanese origin.
I tend to personally prefer other anime, such as drippingly-detailed sceneries:

Major PWNage over Sponge Bob and Invader Zim, ne?
-
The fact that you used "pwnage" and "ne" kind of ruins your point there, and you can't say that all West animation isn't that detailed. Look at Avatar (the TV series) and tell me it doesn't have "drippingly-detailed sceneries" that are better than that.
Not to mention you're coming in and saying P&S isn't good animation when you haven't even seen it yourself.
-
^^ Moribito is seriously nifty, no doubt. (^_^) If you liked that one, you might also enjoy Ghost Hound and Hell Girl - both pay a lot of loving attention to visuals, though Hell Girl gets a little fanservicey by the end.
*realizes he's going off on a tangent*
Er, sorry about that. So yeah, Panty and Stocking, the subject... I gather that Gainax pulled another "Where the ****ity ****ing **** did that ****ified **** **** ending come from?"
-
Western Animation can be just as good Japanese. Just saying.
Panty and Stocking has beautiful animation. Whenever I watch it I'm in awe on how smooth amazing it is.
anyway just saw the last episode yesterday. And Im not quite sure what happened XD
all I know is that Stocking blew my mind.

Fixed it! :D

The fact that you used "pwnage" and "ne" kind of ruins your point there, and you can't say that all West animation isn't that detailed.
Where did I say that "all West animation isn't that detailed" - ( are you confusing what I wrote with someone else's post?) My first point (that PnSnGB *is* anime) is to let people know that despite its unusual style, it would 'count' as anime for stuff like the AMV contest. That should be received as a *positive* message on this thread.
I then added that the style seemed to resemble some other shows that I personally find not to my preference, and that I like some other stuff a LOT better, and gave one particular reason (detail.)
Not to mention you're coming in and saying P&S isn't good animation when you haven't even seen it yourself.
Didn't write that either. Nevertheless, there is a lot which can be surmised from still images even without watching them in motion. Again, the first and most important point was that "Yes this is anime," even though personally I may not find it as visually satisfying as some other works.
I was scrupulous in using the word personally in my previous post.
Also glad people enjoyed an entertaining, whacky ending...
-
...So basically you came in, told us something we already knew, and said it wasn't to your preference. Because that's all stuff we need to know.
-
You know, fleur; I don't think he said anything that warranted your reaction. Couldn't you have tried to have been civil about it? The mods have been cracking down on the degrading talk a lot lately (which is nice), so I'd like to think that everyone would be trying to speak kindly to each other. I kinda like you, fleur, so I hope that you'll take these words sincerely, especially from someone who's guilty of talking down on people from time to time (which I'm honestly trying to avoid). Please play nice?
-
Some people on here are way too sensitive.
-
Some people on here are way too sensitive.
-
Washougal, please leave it up to me to give my own unwanted lectures. I'm old and cranky enough without getting more indirectly attributed to me.
Everyone, the subject is supposed to be Panty and Stocking, not each other's perceived hostility or sensitivity. Please stay on topic.
-
I'm late to the party! So uh. What the f**k just happened? Especially the end. I am so confused!
-
I don't even know, I'm betting it'll all be a dream.
Either the very end being a dream or the entire series being Brief's dream.
-
Either the very end being a dream or the entire series being Brief's dream.
that would be so awesome....
-
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I didn't mind the ending at all. The whole series has been so wild and unexpected that a crazy twist at the end seems to fit. If it had ended before the twist, it would have been kind of like the mundane, expected ending that a more ordinary anime would have.
