Just bought a PS3, I have never played any of the Kingdom Hearts and I also wanted to play a bunch of the older Final Fantasy games. Ended up buying 3 kingdom hearts games, and 3 final fantasy games to find out that my 160gb ps3 is not compatable with ps2 games. :-\. My solution, keep the PS3 and buy a PS2 also.

sadness the older ps3 were compadible, tho they cost more to fix with the blue ray burns out

Yeah, i was looking at that. I wish I did more research, I guess I just kinda assumed that it would be backwards compadible. If I had known, I would have tried to buy one of the older versions online.

Sad that you have to get another console, but my advice would be buy used. like craigslist. Ps2 is one of those systems that don't really break, so I'd be less worried about being ripped off.

your problem is why i dont like thd ps3.

Though the fat ones (at least in my experience) do tend to wear out every year or so to the point where you have to do self-maintenance x-x Mine doesn't read games once in a while, and never reads a gameshark or most dvds.

I had the same problem getting XII. Then I found out that mine wasn't compadible. Although I heard there will be an update for the future that you can download good PS2 games from PSN.
This will take a while though.

Duuuude.. I've had like 4-5 PS2s go bad. I've "fixed" them but it's always just a temporary thing. I tried to replace a laser in one of mine, and in the process something got stuck and it fried a chip. Good luck replacing the chip. D:

the only game system i own is a ps2 but i only really use it to watch dvds ;0

My PS2's worked fine for 7 years.

My PS2 works fine as a paper weight. Pretty inefficient at just about anything else. Suppose it could be used a blunt object to bludgeon someone to death, but you'd really have to work at it and to be honest I don't know if the plastic outer casing could sustain multiple hits.

The only version of the PS3 that was backwards compatible was the one they had in the MGS4 bundle, and sadly since that deal ended a while ago the only way you could find one is on eBay or something. Of course people realize how valuable they are, so they won't come cheap either.
You could find a PS2 online or at pretty much any game store still though for cheap. Just be careful cause they can be fragile if dropped and their disc reader can be damaged easily. I watched my friend drop his on accident while moving it, and it shattered from the 4 ft fall...

I have had a few PS2's that wore out as well (have also done my own repairs to one of the ones I still have)...you should look to buy a new one. A lot of stores still have the new slims & they only cost around $40. Up to you really, but I wouldn't trust a used "fatboy" PS2 from craigslist.

Heh, I guess I'm lucky... I've had my PS2 for years and it still works like new... XD
Not sure what I did to keep it running so long. I just kept really good care of it, that's all I can think of. Heck, even my first PS1 is still working-- and every other console I've ever owned, knock on wood, including my PS3.
But yeah, you can find a PS2 pretty cheap anymore. You can find them at GameStop/EB Games, Toys 'R Us, Fry's, pretty much anywhere that has a decent selection of games and consoles.

Same here, only mine is getting close to 5 years. What's really funny and odd about it is that for a while the internal fan wasn't working, so it'd turn itself off due to the heat. I would set the console underneath a window fan. However, for the past year and a half, it's been fine; no fan needed. This changed less than a week ago, when my game froze. HAHA!
As for the PS3 thing, if I ever get one, I'll most likely be getting whichever is cheapest at the time.
