Okay, Welcome to Hetalia World Meeting 2011!!!! x3!

Sadly we didn't expect so many people to show up, guess you could say it was the practice run?
2011 will have a bigger room and hopefully more nations!
2011 is going to be another morning panel but also going to have an 18+ panel that night!
I'm gonna open the sign up early.
We also decided on no more then 2 Of the same nations for each.

Whether or not my group can make the morning one depends on how the shoots play out, and how much sleep we want.
If you think you'll be short people for the 18+ one, I can try to find a security blanket and help out~

I didn't even try to go this year cause it was so early and I knew it would be packed. Before my roomates and I made the final decision to try and go or not, what made us give up was when we saw what room it was held in... O.o We thought, "There's no way we're getting in..." and went back to bed for an hour.

Yeah we truthfully didnt think we would have such a turn out, only a handfull of people seemed interested on the forum so when we saw the line stretching down the hallway we were like :o "we need a bigger room". I felt so bad that we had to make people leave.

So next year, Hetalia goes in a Live Events room and my Randomness of the Internet Panel goes in a panel room. That way nobody loses. Plus, for the world meeting you really need to have everyone up where the audience can see them.

Anyway, I forgot to mention this earlier. It's just a suggestion, but maybe if like for example: We have two America cosplayers. One of them is over 18 and the other one is under 18. Perhaps the one over 18 could wait untill the late night pannel, that way, if we're only going to have two of the same country, another person under the age of 18 wanting to be that country could join.
It's just a thought ^^;

Actually, that was one of my questions, does the situation necessarily change when you represent the past parts of countries? I was just wondering if I should respond like the current country or as the country would during that time period :3

It really would. But then Rome and Viking Norway would have a lot to talk about. They pillage,rape, are fierce in battle, and both love good warriors...ah, and we're both pagans. At least that's the portrayal of the viking I would like to do, I know there were some that were christians later on down the road but I want to do a pagan viking <3.
Actually if we want to get technical I'd get along pretty well with Germania too since some of the Scandanavian countries like Sweden, Denmark, and Norway are descended from the Germanic people/tribes which Germania consists of. Though some would argue it's the other way around. :]

@ sandro & Saki - I've had various forms of lamb. If you go to a Mongolian Grill (or some variant) the lamb tastes a lot like chicken. There's this one Jewish lady I know who makes lamb bacon (tastes almost like real bacon but nowhere near as salty). Another lady makes lamb stew that reminds me of beef. Another family I know makes lamb jerky; personally, I only like their peppered lamb jerky and garlic & herb lamb jerky (the teriyaki is weird...). My mom makes lamb shoulder that literally tastes like a sweet pork chop (sounds weird, but it rocks!). It's all in the recipe.

If you need it to be gone the next day, makeup is probably your only choice, or maybe a spray-on body paint. The thing with that is there's alot of set up needed to do a spray on body paint.
Here's another idea, use a body suit (or have skin colored fabric between the top and bottom) and paint in the definition and belly button. We do it in Theatre, and they do it in skating.

Basically what the world meeting is is that countrys come together in a room and give their opions about different things from currentish topics like global warming and swine flu, to even the stranger topics of yaoi and englands cooking. The meeting of last year is on youtube (filmed with my camera lol) is you need more example of it.

Don't take my advice strongly since my only experience with the World Meeting is standing outside the door and watching the videos (thanks to whomever posted those!).
First I was thinking it would be fun to put everyone who is bordered IRL next to each other. Any doubles should 'cage in' their neighbors (Example: England, Wales, Scotland, England, France). However, this could end up being rather messy depending on the room and setting arrangements.
On a similar note but dropping the foregoing idea, I think it would be best to separate any doubles and spread them across the room for more character interaction. I find it when multiple people are cosplaying the same character only one (the more outgoing person in general) tends to stick out and the others fall silent (ex: If there is an America next to an England and a Spain at the front have the other America in the back sitting next to a Germany and China). To keep variety.

But it's definite now; nothing is changing on my list. The only thing that I might add is a cosplay for a photoshoot only, and that's only if the cosplay is simple. I'm researching how to do England's eyebrows right now, as well as a costume 'cause I ain't making that. I had to make that same kinda top in High School and it sucked. Never again.
Found a good one I like though.

From personal experience, find a us army uniform for England and find things for hid sling and white chollared shirt. And also try putting black eyeliner on your brows. You dont have to make it extremely england thick but with the black applyed theyll look thicker *nod*

I actually find that more 'natural' looking eyebrows look better for cosplays of England, rather than the thick stripes like in the anime/manga/pictures. But that's just IMO.

Soooo drastic change of cosplay plans y'all. Although there were three Hetalia cosplays I was debating on for quite some time and I was going to do two of them, I decided that I would rather just make one really awesome one so I can devote all my time to it and not just half-**s the rest. I had some people take a vote and it looks like I'm gonna be Ottoman Sultan!Turkey. I'm going to do a crap-ton of research on Ottoman Sultan attire and try to come up with an awesome original design, I already have some ideas, I'm thinking of a gold and white color scheme-thoughts? After watching and reading a myriad of tutorials I now not only know how to make myself look a touch middle eastern, but also like a man and how to make his stubble/facial hair look realistic.
I'm really excited about this. So could you possibly take me off as England and Norway and replace both the day and night ones with Turkey? :3

Since you're going with a sultan flare, I'd recommend original period; I think they looked cooler then. (I think the only major advantage with Republic is that was when hats became a more common thing for males to wear, but the sultans did in original Ottoman period, too).

^^ I never understood what the point was of giving them "real" names on top of being the representations of nations, especially since many of them still have no names.

I find it gives them a sense of more "human"-ness. IMO, America, Russia, China, England, etc, are more like nicknames than actual names. Kind of like how a lot of people call the President "Mr. President", rather than "Barack Obama".
I know it's a weird way of looking at it, but it just feels that way to me.

I don't think that makes any sense. They're supposed to be their nations, and President Obama, technically, is supposed to be referred to as the president, because it's his title. Just calling him Barack Obama now would be an insult.

Exactly my point. Never even once in the anime or manga has any of the characters refered to another nation as nothing other than that nation's name (unless it was an insult such as calling Italy an idiot or something else). Though, considering it's a comedy/parody anime with humanized countries, i don't think there's any real need to be serious about names here.

Okay, that's a very good point. Personally, it's mainly a thing about being confused about who's who and why doesn't every character have a name. I saw that Ukraine doesn't have a name when I was looking up info on possible cosplay characters, and it baffled me.

My guess is that Himaruya was just being lazy and didn't feel like comming up with names fr such minor characters. I'm sure that if Ukraine ever comes back into the storyline a few more times, he'll probably come up with some name.

Say, something that I still don't understand about the fanbase is the concept of the "Bad Touch Trio." My girlfriend did a little research on it and said it probably had to do with a war in the mid-1700's in which Spain, Prussia, & France were allies. Other than that, I see no logical reason to pair these three in such a manner, especially to give their "group" such a name.

There are so many memes out there that just come out of nowhere. I personally have no idea where the term "Bad touch trio" came from, i also have no idea where the term "Spamano", "Gilbird", or "Germancest" came from ether. We cannot answer a question that has no answer.
And by the way, "5 meters" refers to Prussia's genitalia, "Spamano" refers to the yaoi pairing of Spain and N.Italy, "Gilbird" refers to the little bird that flies around Prussia's head, and "Germancest" refers to the yaoi pairing of Germany and Prussia.

Like I have no idea why all my hetalia-loving friends call America's ahoge 'Nantucket, Tenessee' when Nantucket is actually in Massachusettes. I just don't bother. I liked the fact that thhe main characters had names, mainly cause of the N & S Italy part..I find myself calling them by their human names more often than their country names.

I'm sorry if it looked as if though I made an insult (though I don't see where). If people don't know, they could have said so. If they have theories or heard rumors, they could have said those. Instead, I was advised to stop asking questions. To me, that is an insult, especially when my question is an attempt to understand a frame of mind that I don't understand. I was just looking for some sort of info, no matter how feint. As for the Nantucket, Tennessee, unless the starters had a reason for their geographical blunder, it was most likely a case of forgetfulness or unfamiliarity. I could believe that it may have even been started by a non-American, which would make the unfamiliarity part seem more probable.

If it doesn't make sense, it's a meme, and it came from the Hetalia fandom, it's very likely that you won't know exactly where it came from. Also, there's a huge list of fan terms on the Hetalia Wikia websight, so i would suggest looking there.
Also, i wasn't trying to come off as refusing to help you. If i did refuse, i would stright up tell you that i don't want to tell you that much. I was only stating that you shouldn't really be worrying about where memes start in a fandom such as this. It's like slang words, no one knows who the first person was who said it, but all we know is that a ton of people say it now because it got popular.

I did read it, but I also know that a lot of memes CAN be explained. In fact, most of them (at least the ones that I'm familiar with) can. I think your understanding of the word "meme" is a little inaccurate. "A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another."
Many slang terms can be traced back to their roots, too, such as "groovy," "homey," "Catch my drift," and "square." It's really a matter of investigating. There's even a term that I remember hearing in an old Chip n' Dale's cartoon, in which Chip called himself a gay dog. It was a term used at the time that can be compared to playa'.
I think we ought to agree to move on from here.
Going back to the point of this thread, I'm thinking about looking into (the real) Liechtenstein's stance on many of the proposed subjects, such as marijuana and stuff. I think it'd make the panels more interesting that way...

True, but it would still take far too much unnecessary effort to find out exactly where a fan made internet meme came from. For the most part, things such as Russia's pipe or the Youtube meme of "nice Florida" can easily be explained because they can be easily found, terms that come from message boards and chatrooms would be much harder to find considering maybe 50 to 100 out of the thousands, possibly millions of Hetalia fans out there know exactly who and where that term was first used.
Also, speaking of pot (and getting back on subject). I heard a few days ago that the entire country of Canada is going legalize Marijuana. So that might be an interesting subject to bring up if that actually happens.

Five meters comes from an LJ icon post on the comm a few years ago stating the average penis length in each country. As a joke, the creator put "5 meters" for Prussia's, and it caught on.

So, I don't remember who recommended it, but there's a flag store nearby the Lloyd Center Mall called Elmer's. They have many flags, but sadly enough, no Liechtenstein. Even if they did, they charge $79 dollars for a 5'x3' flag! :o I think I'll take a look at eBay, or something, after all...

I think we all should get there about an hour before the event. That way we could help set everything up as well (i assume there's going to be flags and other props, possibly a camara to videotape the event that we'll need to set up).

Who was it that submitted the paperwork for the panel? Depending on what was indicated as the approximate set-up time should indicate when people ought to help. If they said that it should take only half an hour, then it's possible that there will only BE half an hour available because of the previous panel's scheduled end time.

I said its an hour long panel but set up time shouldn't take too long at all.

I suppose part of it would depend on how you're wanting the room to be set-up as well. If I'm available, I can definitely help out with whatever plans are involved. It's actually part of my job to rearrange tables and chairs and stuff on campus. :D

Well here's how i see it. I've seen plenty of state OCs on websights such as DeviantART and 4chan and such and most of them are just wearing normal clothes. So with that in mind, we could have any normal person wearing any normal set of clothing come in and call themselves Oregon or Maine or whatever and eventually we'd have just a ton of random people saying thay're states. There would just be way to many people there if we did both states and countries.
And considering Sealand and Wy are canon in the series and there arn't very many canon characters that arn't nations in the series, i'm pretty sure we could let it slide.

I suppose so, but I'd like to think that whoever is doing it would at least attempt to show something (for lack of better words) patriotically symbolic to the applicable state. For example, I don't think it'd be an accurate portrayal of Washington if someone were wearing sunglasses, a straw hat, swimming trunks, and carrying a surf board. If it's just basic clothing, that's kind of a cop-out. For either Oregon or Washington, I could see them being something along the lines of a hiker or a hunter, some sort of outdoorsy character.

I know, But..well...here's an example:
1: Someone walks into the pannel and calls themself Italy. They are wearing normal every day clothes, no cosplay, and generally look nothing like Italy. So, it goes without saying that we could tell the person they couldn't be in the pannel because they arn't in cosplay.
2: Someone walks into the pannel and calls themself Oregon. They are wearing normal clothes, no cosplay, but we couldn't compare them to any of the charaters considering Oregon isn't actually a character made in the anime or manga. So we have no real way of tell weather this person is just saying that to get in, or thay're actually cosplaying as an OC for Oregon that they made up. Does that make sense?

Oh yeah, I get where you're coming from, which is why I think that they should give into an Oregon stereotype of some sort. I think if I were to go with Washington, I'd go as either a fisherman or a grunge rocker (like Nirvana). Of course, I'd have a Washington state flag, so that I'd look more like I was trying to go for the Hetalia vibe with my wardrobe, but I think that's what I'd do.

But like I said, it can also depend on how the room was previously set up and what is there/available. I do this sort of thing for a living, so I've seen plenty of examples in which a "simple" process can take over half-an-hour with four people working on it.

True. But that why i suggested earlier that we should start showing up as early as possible in order to start getting things set up.

A few other ideas:
Find out what panel will be taking place before this one. Depending on what's there, things might be close enough to where the process could be quick; if not, you'll have a better idea on what to do once it's time.
Plan out what this panel will look like, in as much detail as possible. How many tables? How will they be arranged? How many chairs per table? (I'd say 2 is most likely, but it could be possible that 3 could fit just fine...)
Coordinate with the hotel to make sure that enough tables and chairs are close by enough to allow for a faster set-up time. Actually, it'd probably be better, in many ways, to deal with the Programming department since they're already working with the hotel.

It should be just fine; if we're getting a fairly large room like stated (since last year it's stated there were TONS of people) there should be supplies along the lines of the size of that room. (IE a huge room with only five chairs and two tables = ridiculous, I'm assuming the event/panel before us is going to be fairly large if they'll have the larger room as well)
And if the layout really is more complicated than what was previously proposed, no big deal. I'm sure we could work with it. Get a few ideas down and go with whatever works best at the time.

Germany... trying to decide if I should do a formal-er version with his blue-green jacket and black slacks (It's his reg jacket but it's REALLY formal looking, and a bit tight) or mod my green military uniform, which looks more.. rugged but doesn't have the black around the collar/sleeves (I guess I could add though. I do use it for England however so anything I added would look sort of cheesy since it has to be removable.... Choices, choices...

So I have an outfit i'm putting together, and It would be something like a 'tourist'!America (now hold on, stay with me here) The outfit including:
-American flag print Swim trunks
-Flip flops
-navy blue/white wife beater
-ridiculous amounts of patriotic bracelets and necklaces
-possibly a hawaiian print open button up
What if I came in late, acting like the douche I am, and shouting "Hey guys! I'm finally here!!...Why are you all dressed so stuffy today! It's casual Friday right?!"
Someone: "...No America..it's (insert actual day here)"
Me: "....Oh I feel a new law has been passed by my lovely Boss- everyday is Friday now!" /sits down awkwardly with McDonald's bag.

I wouldnt say skills its decent at best. And Im making it where it ties shut with ribbon to save myself the hassle of it being too small on accident. Gives a bit of leeway.

If we are allowed to rearange the furniture, the horseshoe shape that was proposed earlier would be the best I think. If we are NOT allowed to move tables then I guess that we fit as many as we can comfortably at the tables with the others either seated in front of the dias or on either side.

Just to clarify... you will NOT be allowed to move the tables. Both panels are in the classroom setup, so you will have rows of tables with chairs.

Currently suffering from post-con syndrome right now, but once that is over I think I will be far too excited for next year for a little longer than should be right. There were way too many con rules broken and way too many things brought up that shouldn't have AKA nazi/world war two jokes. It wasn't cool guys. Sorry to be the raincloud but it was a bit insane. The under 18 panel on the otherhand will happen, me and my girlfriend already have a few ideas for it.

That was my octopus, by the way. ^^ I certainly enjoyed both, but I must admit the 18+ made me rather uncomfortable at times. I know no one meant any harm, but at the same time it felt some people felt they HAD to push buttons because it was the 18+ panel. Dare I say it felt more childish. But I'm pretty sure I must've done or said something that was uncomfortable to others as well (I was the cheesy martial arts movie!Hong Kong) and for that I apologize.
I can imagine that, it certainly went crazy in there.
Hopefully we just get a longer all ages Hetalia World Meeting panel next year! And a bigger room.

I had fun! Alot of fun! But I felt dead after the panel. I don't like GerIta AT ALL and I felt like I was forced to feed into the GerIta fandom... So thats why I did.....
Next year I will be italy again....

That younger Canada's vast knowledge of cannabis just blew. Me. Away. I did research for HK's handling for the plant, but not that much. That was awesome.

I feel that should be an added rule, along with making sure others don't bring up Nazi and other inappropriate jokes we should try to not overwhelm other's OTPs. There were a few others, but obviously what takes the cake is the USUK VS FrUK. Really not needed. There are excellent fan art/fiction/comics from all sides. No OTP should be labeled better than the other.
Terribly sorry if this sounds snobbish/annoying, but I also wish for people to do some research into what their countries are doing recently (unless you are cosplaying a historical time) for next year. Especially those doing Germany and Russia/USSR. Of course, this is Hetalia and I shouldn't let that irk me so much hurhurhur... otz

I didn't go to 18+ panel but I have noticed some people on here and at k-con getting a little crazy about the cross the Germany and Prussia ware. Just to clear the air about this that cross was first a church symbol for peace and not meant for the evil that Hitler turned it in to. Not getting on any one about it but I was hearing a lot of comments on it this weekend when I was walking around with some friends and from a friend that tried being cool to history and getting a real one. so if you hear anything about it just tell them it wasn't evil just Hitler and his mind were.

I was the panelist 'Pirate'-England for under 18 and Seychelles for 18+ (the 'Pirate' was due to not being able to run and get the outfit and get back to the room in fifteen minutes after the Kuro panel)
I think the under 18 went great, though we'll have questions more suited to multiple nations last time. A lot of the topics on the list were GerIta, Germany, England, America, and USUK vs FrUK-centric. I don't know HOW that happened (we seemed to be missing a lot of topics from the forum list on the printed one), but Chibi and I will work to get a better list for next year.
We'll also try to showcase more pairings, instead of the 'popular' ones, or highlighting one pairing over another. I'm not sure HOW we'll do it just yet, but we'll try.
Also, this is a note for everyone; we're gonna try to get Live Events for next year. Those who didn't get in; I'm sorry, but we couldn't just break fire code, ya know? xD We packed everyone we could in the room, but the room has a max limit we MUST OBEY. And those who signed up on the forums kinda get first swing at the room.
Thanks to everyone who helped me clean the room before the 18+. That was very helpful. However, a lot of that panel was not. Con rules were broken, and I plan to complain about the Yojimbo not stepping in to help. I tried, but by the end of the panel I had a major stress headache, a near anxiety attack, and got expressed into the elevators by staff so I could get to my room and lay down. u.u Maybe, eventually, we'll try it again, but 18+ does not give us free reign to break con rules. Hetalia is a rowdy fandom, and that's okay. We tried to stop things from getting out of hand with the rules at the beginning, but very quickly they started to get ignored. We didn't bring up any of the raunchier and 18+ questions because of how fast things got out of hand.
Next year, if we get Live Events, I was thinking of getting Chibi to request a microphone. That certainly helped me out in the two Kuroshitsuji panels.

I have to say being the Latvia from the 18+ pannel and being chased by what seemed to be like ever Russia in the room its was fun.

trust me when I say you didn't hurt me at all or annoyed me, the last con I went to a Russia cosplayer was way to in character and hurt my wrist when garbing me and dragging me away from my friends with out my consent I was freak out and scared.

Yes! Between us both next year were gonna make it the best one yet. The idea I have to set it up is more like the one I was in at SacAnime. I'll go into details later on.

I don't think we should really do any pairings at all. And if we do, it should be cannon ones. (Like Lithuania X Belarus and Austria X Hungary) But still, even thoughs can set people off.

True, it would be best if we kept it relatively vague with actually pairing anyone up and did our best to stay (believe it or not) to character with how each Nation is portrayed on acting towards each other. Though I would think it is more Lithuania -> Belarus than Lithuania X Belarus~
And it was no problem helping to clean up. I only wish I could have done more to help out. My mind kept blanking out with how crazy things were getting (with the convention in general, not just in the panel).

Agreed on the pairings thing, unless it was a general pairing topic where we'd discuss being paired with people wheather we like them or not, not a specific pairings. (I don't particularly like Liet x Pol though i understand why they're a popular pairing)
Agreed with the whole convention being nuts and out of hand, "chair" and random dance parties.

Under 18 meeting was fun but I agree on the topics being a single person or 2 people centric but it still was a lot of fun.
18+....That was sooo out of hand and I totally understand how we aren't allowed to do it anymore....I wish we could do it again but we obviously need several set rules for it to even be tolorable...Personally I even got annoyed with some of the sexual things happening. At one point we had like 3 mini scenarios going on and it was hard to pull people back into continue the meeting(which it seriously wasn't a meeting by the end of the night.)
What we could do is be a little more organized and have set skits or scenerios if we have them. Like me as England putting the collar on to Seychelles at the 18+ pannel, that was planned by the two of us but I had no idea when to do it...I mean little things like that can be entertaining but maybe in a set area of the meeting instead of all happening at the same time or in the middle of someone's sentence. So if someone wanted to so something like that maybe ask the people in charge via the forums before hand and ask 'when would be a good time to do___' and then they could say 'slip it in after ___ topic' or something like that.
I seriously though the whole thing was GREAT and I would love to do it again....but maybe...a little bit more organized. ^_^

I agree with fullmetal completly about this .n. the way I'm thinking for next year is having one of each conrtry we can get all up front and then the rest be audiance members and have the whole thing run more like a Q and A. The way its working in my mind atleast, it seems a bit more managable and easier to actually plan things with the ones who sighned up.

I like the idea of one-to-one when it comes to nations. That worked well for the Kuro panels, and they went really well. As well as scripted 'events', like America breaking in the under 18. That went well.

Hi~ I was the Hungary who freaked out every time someone mention Yaoi. It's sad that I was the only Hungary who did that, I think there was like, 4 there..... Anyway, I thought the meeting was awesome ^^ I wish we could've filmed it better, but it's awesome we got any footage at all :D
