It is my pleasure to announce that signups for the Kumoricon Karaoke Contests have begun!
Please go here to sign up:
http://www.kouha.net/kkd/contests/kumoricon/kumoricon2005.php3
As Imari mentioned, there are two contests, the "Japanese Idol" and the "Karaoke-Cosplay Hybrid" contest. You will notice that there is no option to select which contest you want to compete in. That is because you do not need to decide until you check in at the convention. There will be one Preliminary round for all contestants and from that we will select the finalists for each respective contest.
Any questions, just reply here or send me a PM.

Signed up, but I'm unsure why it asked for the album name. I have mine on just a compilation...

Compilations are fine, the Album field is just an aid in helping to identify the exact version if needed.

Quick question.....is the list of songs available yet?
-
On the sign up sheet it wants two songs, one for try outs and one for the final round. Can these two songs be different? And will an audience watch the try out rounds?
-
The general public will be admitted into the auditions, so your friends and family can watch, but it is not an official event. It will be informal.

Yes, these songs can be different. It's preferred that they are different, as a matter of fact.
-
Can someone give me a link to the song list please instead of ignoring me?

Well, I signed up...when can we expect an e-mail if we got a spot?
-
One more question, what if we decide that we want to do a different song later on after already signing up? Can the song be changed at the con before the contest? Especially if we provided the song overselves?
-
Yeah, I didn't know you wanted a different song for sign-up, preferrably. I just submitted it and then looked here. Wow, dumb. Anyway, I'd be perfectly okay with singing a different song at audition, so if I say that there, would it be acceptable?

Yes, you can change songs freely until you check in for the contest at the con.
confirmation emails will be sent out starting 2 weeks before the con.

I just signed up for this, and I was wondering two this:
1) Is the first song for an audition for the show, or for the first round of said show? If the former is true, would be able to use the same song for both, or is that frowned upon?
2) How will we know if we weren't accepted? Will we just not recieve an email?

1. The first song is for the audition (aka the preliminary round). The second song is for the finals. You can use the same song for both the audition and the finals.
2. We will post a list of names to the forum on August 28th.

Why is it preferred? Wouldn't you want to hear what the end product would sound like?

There's more challenge and difficulty involved in singing two different songs well than one.

So it's good for bonus points or something? I'm still confused.
EDIT: For the audition music, can it be a song from a Jpop album that was done by an American band?

I responded in the other thread, but in summary:
1. no bonus points.
2. "Cover" songs are not allowed, nor are American songs which were used in an anime series.
-
Okay, so I'm Filking. If you really want, I can sing a different song I already know for the tryouts, but I'd really just prefer to Filk it up, especially as I plan to have a routine to go along with it.

Oh no, the song in question...the American band did backup for a Jpop album so one of their songs wound up on the album. It wasn't used in a series, and it wasn't a cover, if that changes anything.
...but wait a minute, I thought dub songs were allowed. Or are you just trying to avoid things like the Digimon the Movie soundtrack where they did it like a regular movie soundtrack and just took pop songs from elsewhere rather than having stuff made for the movie?

Yup, you've got the right idea.
Dub songs created for an anime (for example, songs from Robotech, or the American version of Sailor Moon) are okay.
Pop songs or songs which were first famous outside of anime (examples: "Fly Me To The Moon", or a more recent example, the Duran Duran song "Girls on Film") are not allowed.
Regarding your song, PM me the info (title/US band/Jpop band/album tltles) and I'll make an official ruling.
-
Which means, for you potential con-scene teen hearthrobs and one-man boy-bands, the song "If Only Tears Could Bring You Back" by the failed Norwegian boy band "Midnight Sons" is hereby inadmissable. 8)

Did so last night. Do you know when I'll have a reply?

I'm looking for "For Real", the first opening to Saiyuki. I have an MP3 of it. Can I bring it on a CD (audio) and be able to check and see if the vocal dampener will work on it before the auditions? Or should I just do a different song?
Help ME!!!!!!!

As well as the opening and ending themes to the series Hanada Shonen-shi, which were both Backstreet Boys songs. There's a list of about half a dozen or so such songs off the top of my head which fit in this category.

dmstudios3, I strongly suggest you try it yourself at home first. I posted the vocal dampening information in this topic (http://www.kumoricon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1210). If that's not possible come by during open mic and we'll see what we can do.
