Title: A question about different versions of a song~

So, I've been thinking about entering the competition this year, but it's hard for me to find songs in my range. D: About the only one I'm really pretty good at singing is the Hare Hare Yukai, but I'm sure that LOTS of people will end up doing that one. >.<;; My question is this: If I sing a different characher version of the song (ie- Itsuki or Kyon) then would I still be able to sing it even if someone had the normal version of the song? The lyrics are slightly different in each character version, and both Itsuki and Kyon's have completely different sounding songs altogether.
