Title: Mother Nature Interruptions? (Girls Only Material)
Post by: Gryffinclaw Princess on August 09, 2010, 01:01:41 pm
Has Mother Nature ever interrupted your fun during conventions?
I don't know about the rest of you girls, but I'm always worried that the morning of Con I will start and my day will be ruined.
Why? Cause Mother Nature has blessed me with immense pain and a great immune system that fights off my pain pills for about an hour and a half when I first take them.

So, what do you girls do when this happens to you?
I ask because a convention isn't like going to school everyday. At a convention you could be wearing as little as a bikini and a miniskirt if you are Rikku (FFX-2) or a huge poofy dress with a million petticoats if you are CC (Code Geass) in her black dress.
Some outfits aren't very bathroom friendly and others aren't Mother Nature friendly.
I also ask because I know there are a lot of girls out there who are thinking this question and are just too embarrassed to ask. I know they look on their calendar where they mark that dreadful day and go, "; 3; Kumori-con..... Why....?" So let us help them pre-plan and be prepared for that blasted day so no fun will be ruined because of Mother Nature!

Oh no, I'm so sorry! ; 3 ;
It must suck to feel pain around that time.
Mine has never bothered me, so I'm good, but I feel bad for people whom it does affect!

I'm very simular...And mine is evil and decides for be around the beginning of the month....Which will be when Kumo happens ;A;

Mainly, I just deal with it....And especially if I'm wearing white bottoms, I go to the restroom more often, to make sure nothing has happened...

And if something does happen, run to a hotel room right away to take it off and soak in soup and water. This will prevent it from staining. And sadly, you probably won't be able to wear that cosplay for at least the rest of the day...But **** happens...

I think I'm really odd, for nearly the whole week before mine, I totally just lose it. And I think that's the only thing that I would be worried about if it happened around con. I go insane, I get mad real easy and I cry over not getting my top ramen in Oriental flavor. If I happen to have my period I just bring a TON of extra pads, and cover my self with them. (xD It's funny but it works.) Then I come back in like three or four hours, five if I'm pushing it, and change 'em.

And I'm with neko, mainly, I just handle it and try to be as nonchalant about it as possibly.

well, I'm not too bad off when I get them. I don't mood swing too much (except for the occasion quite burning frustration, but that blows over quickly at a con), and I don't get cramps.
I DO however get prodigious headaches/migranes. So I have to be careful to bring advil whereever I go. :p

I'm pretty positive mine falls RIGHT on con this year. Ugh. Same with another member of my cosplay group, which is a little annoying. But I'll just deal. I luckily am wearing pretty bathroom friendly pants all three days. Although on day I'm a moogle so I'll be in all white. The trick is, if you're concerned about stains or something awful happening, wear dark safety shorts. It helps prevent those sort of crisises. This of course only works if you're in white, and not in swim suits. I suppose if you were...well. shoot.

I guess it all about makin sure you have what you need to really take care of that issue while your at conspace. Make sure your friends know whats up (if you're comfortable enough) so they can help make sure that you have a good con experience. And try not to think about it too much! That can sometimes make things worse.

Con is one of those things that I look foward too all year. so it'd take a fair amount of work to ruin it for me. Last year I had some kind of food poisoning that would really hit me in the mornings, but I dealt with it, and once I was dressed and woke up, it got better, and I didn't feel anything at con. I managed to have a great con experience despite everything. *shrug* that's just the way it is.

I never understood the big deal, since it's never really bothered me before ouo In fact, I usually don't even notice it start until it's too late... ;u;

But it does make me really snappy right before it, which has happened at a con three times for me (Out of the 9 cons I've attended :T)

My suggestion if you need to use a restroom and you're costume's a bit big, find a bigger bathroom away from the con, since those will be less crowded and you can probably get the huge stall. I can't make any specific suggestions since I never have to go when I'm downtown though ono

Hehe, I never even commented myself on this! ^^;

Anyways, here it goes!

As you guys read, I have pretty painful cycles and normally it wakes me up. The pain comes hardest just before I start and it's so bad that no matter how deeply I'm sleeping, I will instantly wake up. I take about three pain pills when I first start because of the level and then I take two the rest of the time. So the first day it's three in the morning, two and lunch, two at dinner, and two before bed! Then the rest of the time it's two all the time. I take Ibuprofen because it works best for me and the limit is 8. I go over the first day but only by one so it's not terrible though I wouldn't recommend it if you don't know your body very well and what it can take. I also have prescribed Hydocodone for when it is really bad but don't ever mix your pills!

I personally don't do tampons. I tried them once and it was too weird for me to have something stuck up there. So I prefer maxipads.
But no matter which you prefer, I would start wearing a pantie liner two days before you are supposed to start because you really never know if your body wants to throw you a little surprise party. If you wear tampons, I would continue to wear the liners just in case you get so busy during con or if you are far away from a rest area that you still won't ruin your panties or outfit. If you're a heavy bleeder, I would wear both a tampon and a maxipad just to be safe if you know you are going to be going to a lot of places and you don't know when you'll be able to get to the bathroom.

Personally, even if I did wear tampons, I would never wear them to a con. You never know when bathrooms will be unavailable and tampons are very dangerous. You have gasses that leave your body and a tampon plugs up those gasses inside of you. This can cause dangerous infections and illnesses. That's another reason I don't wear them period (no pun intended...).

For Maxipads with skimpy outfits, stay away from the ones with wings. Especially if you are wearing a bathing suit or a skirt. If you don't bleed too badly, I would get the small set so it doesn't look like your packing if someone so happens to take a peak when you aren't expecting it. Just remember that they don't hold as much as the medium or large ones so if you normally wear those, you'll have to make more bathroom trips so things don't get too messy.

Most importantly (and I would hope most obviously...)?
Wash yourself! Take care of yourself down there. Things may get busy and you may not always have time for a shower if your roommates are asleep but if you're on your period, keeping clean is a major part of it! If you know your night is going to be crazy, take a shower in the morning. If you can't shower at all, run the bath while everyone is getting ready and take a dip when they are all asleep.

Wow, a topic about periods and the word period has only been said once?  Come on guys, we're all big girls.  Whatever boys happen to drift into this topic can get over it and press the backspace button.  Let's all say it together now,

PERIOD!
fake edit: the poster above me posted as I was typing this, but.  lol.  my point still stands.

I used to get really awful periods with horrible cramping that would last the full week of bleeding so a couple years ago I got on birth control, and it's sooooo nice.  I'm able to plan my periods around cons, so I never have to worry about bleeding.  I just have to remember to take my pill on time.  Fortunately, since I've adjusted to it by now I don't have any negative side effects whatsoever, and periods are way lighter and way shorter.  I would highly recommend this to anyone who has bad periods.

BUT, let's pretend I'm not gifted with prescription...pills... Tampons are MUCH.  MORE.  EFFECTIVE.  You don't feel like you're walking around making noise in a wet diaper, and the discomfort last for a short amount of time before you completely get used to it.  Not to mention, (unless you have a....serious vagina ph balance problem or something) you can leave it in all day and only have to take it out at the end of the day... No trips to the bathroom to check if you're overflowing or if you need to change.  Personally, I'm terrified of public restrooms and WILL NOT USE THEM under pretty much any circumstances, so for me, that's a huge plus.  If tampons are uncomfortable for you, you're probably wearing them wrong... When you put it in, you should push right until there's the pain, then about a centimeter more just to secure it, and then let go.  That's how you know it's totally in, and I promise it shouldn't hurt any more when you're walking around.  You shouldn't feel it unless you think about it (and when you're having fun at a con, why would you?).  Hopefully if you try to use tampons you can distinguish the difference between "dirty sexuality" and "personal hygiene" and you won't have that mental block that might make it difficult to insert properly.

WOW, wall of (hopefully helpful) text.  Anyways.  If you're concerned about a period, obviously don't plan to wear something where this could be an issue... Also, I don't know about you guys, but my bleeding tends to get worse when it's hot, so for your own (and perhaps your health's?) sake, I'd advise taking a few minutes to cool off outside whenever it gets too hot inside the hotel.

I apologize if my post offended anyone... However, I don't feel like vaginas/periods/tampons/whatever are anything to be ashamed of.  It's a part of life and there's no use avoiding saying things for the sake of... grossed out boys, or whatever.  If there are any girls grossed out, SHAME ON YOU!

another fake edit: Gryffinclaw Princess mentioned taking a bath, and I recently learned taking a bath/swimming during your period is totally...bloodfree!  Or, well, nothing will get out since the water creates a "plug" though obviously once you stand up.... Have a towel ready.  Or, hotel towels are usually white... Well, don't make the hotel have to buy another towel.

Serika made a good point! Shower or bath, whatever you do to clean yourself, bring your own towel! Hilton towels are white, as are most hotels. If you are on your period, you should bring your own towel. Not only for the hotel staff but your roommates. I'm sure they don't want to take a shower after you and accidentally grab your bloody towel. For period I would invest in a red towel for hopefully obvious reasons... It will never get ruined! At least, visually...

I've had mine twice during con. Perhaps one other time but I can't quite remember. I always ALWAYS worry. Because then my con is slightly ruined right there. I feel uncomfortable enough to not go to raves and that's one of my favorite parts of con.

And just in general, having your period during sucks because there are those times when you have to go to the bathroom when you prefer to be doing something else or you should be doing something else. And let me tell you, having your period while having to do a skit? WORST. EVER.

Well, all i can really say about this is that if you think your going to get your period during Kumoricon, i would suggest wearing something that has pants to cover up more and not something like a school girl uniform. For pads i would suggest useing the maxi overnight pads because they soak up more and cover up more.
And for cramps, i would suggest takeing midol. Though sometimes it helps, it won't get rid of all of cramps if your period hurts more than normal, so for THAT i would suggest wearing a heating pad (like the kind for warming up your hands and for releaving pain. The kind that start to warm up when you take it out of the package) or something warm around your lower stomach (i'm not sure if this will work with everyone though because with me, if i get too cold around my stomach, the cramps are worse).

I hope this helped a little ^^;

I am one of those uber squeemish people who is very very very uncomfortable with any of this but I feel its important to educate people and not leave a girl out to be confused and stressed out for con, con should be fun no matter what happens with your "down there" area.

(Note: I feel I have a right to be squeemish specifically because I am hemophobic... you try being a girl and hemophobic and see if you want to talk about the most horrible five days you have every month!)

*takes a deep breath*

Okay so lets talk about OPTIONS.

If you are a female you have undoubtedly researched your options as far as protection in this area. Companies have spent thousands and millions of dollars researching what works in what situations. There are options for thongs and options for night-time. Girls who prefer tampons have a million options on discretion, capacity and extra features like leak guard... of course you should research and review all the products prior to the convention, ask girls you know and do some on-line review reading to verify the claims of the company.

Go to the store and read the boxes, the instructions, and make sure you know what you are buying and for what costume/purpose. Be ready with a answer to any and all situations. Plan your check up times. Many of the Tampon options suggest a 4 hour maximum to their usefulness so I like to think ahead for reasons that I might not be able to get to a location where a changeover can occur or what not. ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP PLAN. But know your products and get comfortable with them.

Wearing feminine hygiene products at con should be a consideration in your cos-play. Just like you wouldn't wear certain products with your spandex pants or a miniskirt, you might look at your bikini bottom cos-play and realize that a light liner, a reputable tampon and a good knowledge of your bathroom options and time constraints will be the best line of defense for you. Other costumes may give you are requirement to pad on the extra protection.

Personally, I'd treat it like apart of the costume and plan your protection for each day and each specific costume. Different people require different things, and different costumes have different limitations, just
keep yourself comfortable, respect your body and you will be okay!

If you AREN'T Cos-playing... keep yourself comfortable and well groomed, I have a tendency to want to curl up in my PJ's and hide from the world... but it's a convention! Be social and fun and you'll forget your time o da month woes!

I've never had mine during the con, as mine used to bug me around the end of the month. HOWEVER *grumbles* thanks to a couple certain friends of mine I practically live with, their damn hormones have messed with mine and over the course of a couple years mine has shifted to now being near the end of the first week of a month into the start of the second week of a month, RIGHT where Kumoricon is -______-

And I'm like you with pain. The pain for me only lasts the first day, but UGHGHGHGHGHG is it PAINFUL! I seriously just try and sleep through the entire first day so I don't have to deal with it, and whenever I wake up I just drug myself up some more than force myself back to bed. If I can't sleep I usually just sit all day, near crying in total pain and constantly wiggling around in different positions to make myself more comfortable. If It happens this con, I'm just going to have to deal with the pain and have a crappy 1/3 con days. I hope its on Dead Day if I must get it during the con.

All you can do is keep track of what time your comes around, pack accordingly, and cosplay accordingly to it. -______- Stupid monthly "gift" ruining everything.

The last three cons I went to, I was on my period, fun times. The funniest part was I had at least one crossplay all those cons lol. It made me slightly crabby and quick to my emotions, but that was only one day. And I had off and on cramps. What I did was take advil when I woke up, even if it didn't hurt yet. And if I started to get cramps, I just took another advil. (if I have imense pain, I take up to 3 pills, cause I'm growing imune to two) The stuff I use is just the costco Ibuprophen.

I prefer pads, because I'm too scared of tampons. And I put in pantyliners during the con just in case I haven't started yet. Like Saki said, a warm thing on your tummy could help your pains, and I usually do that at night when I go to bed. Also, bananas are supposed to help cramps.

also, bring some sort of stain remover and extra clothes in case you do leak on your cosplay, then you can quickly go up to your room, or the bathroom and wash it in the sink.

I am so glad that someone brought up this subject. It was very brave of you.
This has been a problem for me on many levels. One of them is that, I don't know if this is true for other girls or not, does anyone else find it harder to sleep during your moon? I do. I don't know if it's hormones or cramps or....I already hardly ever sleep during cons because there is so much to do (I coordinate stuff going on in 2 rooms all 3 days), so if my body has *anything* going on with makes it harder to sleep, whether it's my moon or allergies or whatever, gosh, I can get really bedraggled. And we all know what happens when we get sleep depped, our immune systems work less well & we can G-d forbid catch that nasty con crud that always seems to go around.....

Another thing that I don't know how much it happens to other people, is that my cycle becomes not predictable during periods of increased activity and/or increased stress. That means that even if the prior several months I've been able to predict within a day or two, during the month of con, I cannot predict.

So what I end up having to do (does anyone else do this?) is make two whole separate plans of potential outfits.

Why? Because I have to dress totally differently, depending. I always wear more layers during, and also, I have to wear different bras during. I don't know about anyone else, but I generally gain half to a whole cup size during, so everything fits differently, also my abdomen & ankles swell, so, I can't even plan the same socks or shoes. It is sooooo annoying.

Hopefully it's not that bad for most of you......

I would like to echo the mention that there are dangers intrinsic w/tampons. My friend's girlfriend freshman year of high school fell asleep without changing one when new to using them, went the whole next day, ended up with toxic shock syndrome, had to go to the hospital (really).

yeah that sucks, There is the option of birth control pills that can be prescribed for period pain (because it can lessen pain in some peeps) it also lets you know when your due to be hit by mother nature, tho it can mess with emotions and can cause weight gain

Bloating's not much fun- I don't notice it coming on, but I notice it going.  Funny thing how much a period affects life.  Sleep?  Nope.  And I get horrid circles under my eyes from lack of it.  I also tend to lose my appetite.  And life stress is a factor.

After topping out at about 11 Tylenol in a 24-hour period, I switched to Aleve.  They last eight hours so I take one when I get up, one when I get off work, and one when I go to bed.  Much simpler, though I have to make sure to take them at the first hint of pain (even if I don't think it's time yet).  If I don't, they won't kick in for a good hour, if then.  And make sure you drink a lot of water (not milk!) and take them before eating.  Eating makes them take much longer to kick in, and milk helps keep them from absorbing.  There are some days Aleve isn't quite enough, but I won't mix pills and won't take another one, since they're rather powerful.  But it's better than the stomach problems Tylenol gave me.

It seems like it would be natural that you wouldn't be at the same time of the calendar month year in and out- we don't run on a lunar calendar anymore.  Or maybe I'm just in the minority on that one.

(Ok, shame on me...this stuff grosses me out!) I get the most. horrible. cramps. for my monthly 'gift'. Sometimes I get extremely ill. There is not enough ibuprofen in the world to relieve the pain. (Sometimes I can't even keep the medicine, or even water down) Don't ever do what I do...It's stupid and can damage your liver...and who knows what else. Sometimes I keep taking ibuprofen until the pain goes away. It can be 2-3 pills every 2hrs to keep the pain away, or just to make it GO away, because the first 2 doses an hour apart didn't do anything. (My uncle, who's an optometrist, suggested I should mix Tylenol with ibuprofen, to decrease my ibuprofen intake...dont really do it that much)  My very first con, I was gifted with dealing with this irritant, and wound up leaking on my cosplay...(Wow...what a thing to happen at your first con! >> ) My Saber costume from Fate/Stay Night...It's not monthly gift friendly...Huge skirt and petticoat... I was lucky nothing got on the 'dry clean only' skirt...shorts are a lifesaver!! Luckily my period that time wasn't one of the really bad ones...

Double check with your doctor, pharmacist (drug interactions), etc...But I've found the herbal supplement vitex really helps with the symptoms when taken regularly...but I kinda stopped for a while when I misplaced mine...gotta find it!

Anyways, I agree on the pill part. I'm only on it for period-ness and 'cause parents made me. But it helps SO MUCH. I used to have EXTREME PAINS for my period and stuff was EVERYWHERE. /shot but, now everything is so manageable and NO PAIN.
But yeah... there's my two cents. Birth control works yeah.

Thankfully, I've never had my period during a con time, but I'm always afraid.
I started mine when I was in 6th grade, so about 2 years ago. Maybe 3.
And it's still irregular. Sometimes I will go 3 months without having it, sometimes I will have it twice in one month.
So I always worry.

My cramps are just horrible. It feels like someone is stabbing me with a knife and twisting it. Oii vei.
I bloat like crazy, too, that sucks because my cosplays fit me JUST RIGHT, but when I bloat, they are too small. Dx

I don't get headaches or mood swings, but I do get hot flashes, or whatever they are called.

I recommend seeing a doctor. Having periods THAT irregular is not normal, and is doctor-appointment-worthy.
Also birth control can help regulate periods. BIIIIRTH CONTROOOOOOOOL

This should be fun. Dx *sarcasm*

But I'm not.
o.o

Instead of going and talking to your father about birth control, ask him if you can go to the doctors for a check up for irregularity. Then your doctor can suggest what is best for you. If this so happens to be Birth Control, you can ask the doctor to explain it to him.
Right out asking your father for birth control is dangerous and can lead to great suspicion.

Plus, your body could be perfectly normal. If you are under great stress, your period will change and normally can be quite late. After having my period for 7 years, I am still irregular if I am under stress. I have gone at least a month without during finals or in any stressful situation. And then it gets worse because I get stressed as to it being late and it gets even worse and even later. So I would check your emotions around the time you are supposed to have your period and if you are stressed, I wouldn't worry about it being late.

Felt the need to add my two cents on the subject...
I recommend The Diva Cup (Or Lunette or Moon cup, same difference really.) If you don't like tampons, then it's absolutely out of the question. To those who are used to tampons though, the Cup is wonderful. There have been no reported cases of TSS either. Some women like them, some don't, it's basically all just preference. Here's the wikipedia article if you wish to know the details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menstrual_cup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menstrual_cup) Reviews are pretty easy to find as well.

As for cramps... The only time I get them is before my period when I haven't drunk enough water. So... Drink water? Or how about tea?

As far as cramps go, they are worse the more malnourished a person is. If you have a very nourished system, your cramps will be less painful to nonexistent. Taking vitamins regularly and eating right will help your cramps immensely.

For those of you who are like, "I eat just fine and my cramps are deadly!" Well yeah, I think I eat pretty fine, too. The truth? I really don't. Just because you think you eat fine doesn't mean you get all the nutrients you need. I suggest taking vitamin pills to make sure you get everything you need. You won't see improvement right away but after some time you will start to feel less pain during your period. ^^

I swear, if there is a date, any time in the future when I don't want to get mine, I can guarantee that I will get it for that day, even if it breaks the cycle nonsensically! I really really really don't wanna get it but I am sure I will for con! T^T
I had it during con last year... it sucked! I am really hoping for a lucky break!

Man, I forgot that there's people out there who can't use nifty sports tampons that you don't even feel that last like, all day and don't cause any problems.

That must suck.

So! My advice? If you get your period on Kumoricon and you can't wear a pad under your costume comfortably, try out tampons.

Specifically, Tampax Sport. Or any other sport tampon. They're made for people who are going to be active, they're discreet, they're small, you can't even feel them there, and they work. I'd suggest that with a thin pantliner just in case. For people with an average flow, you should only have to change once during the day.

Seriously. Tampons are little tiny lifesavers.

Just be careful with them. You can't take them out until the are pretty full of blood or it really hurts and can rip you up inside.
I tried them once and I was like, "Screw this ****! D8<" I use pads...

I know it sounds scary and I was scared when I first tried them, too. I don't use them cause I know how dangerous they can be and I don't want to risk any infections if I can't get to a bathroom when I need to. It's just like using the bathroom. It's dangerous to "hold it" because it can really screw up your insides.

You should try them though because you never know if you will like them or not. I would suggest trying them during the summer when you know you will be spending A LOT of time at home during your period. This way you can get to a bathroom when you need to and you won't have any issues of timing and such.

Woah, really? I've never had a bad experience with tampons ever.

And I still use pads from time to time.

Seriously, if you get the sport ones with the plastic applicator you can't even feel them going in, and they're small enough to not hurt coming out ever.

But they still work.

Don't make people scared of tampons. They aren't evil.
Title: Re: Mother Nature Interruptions? (Girls Only Material)

I'm not trying to scare her, I'm just telling her my experience so she knows the dangers. She said she didn't have a mom to help her so we should help her instead. I had the ones with the plastic applicator and it was easy going in and all but I felt completely uncomfortable. Plus, I don't like the dangers that come with using them.

I think people should give them a chance because they are useful for certain situations but I don't want to tell a girl to use them without telling her the dangers as well. It's like giving someone cigarettes for the first time and not saying they could cause lung cancer.
I just don't want her to get her head into something that could be dangerous without knowing about it.

I feel bad for girls who start early. I started at around 10-11... I just know it was either the end of 4th grade or the start of 5th.

But maturing early is very bad and it increases the risk of vaginal cancer and breast cancer. So make sure those of you who mature early, like me, keep up on checking yourself. Make sure you rub your breasts and feel them to make sure they continue to feel the same. And make sure you sign up for a gyno appointment as soon as you feel you are ready.

@Gryffinclaw Princess (too lazy to go quote the post, haha): Woah, are you serious about that problem there?  With the ripping?  That....isn't normal.  How old were you when it happened?  I can understand maybe your MUSCLES causing it to feel like that when you pull it out from being nervous, or being in a bad position in an already super sensitive area, but... There's still lubrication going on, even if you don't have a super heavy flow for the day.  I'm willing to bet that, assuming you did everything correctly (and your body was definitely mature enough to produce vaginal fluids other than period blood) it was muscles, or just somehow a bad tampon.  I always used the SUPER DUPER MONSTER SIZE tampons when I wasn't on BC, and old habits die hard... So when I used one of those on an incredibly light birth-control-period, obviously there was so little blood it was (honestly, no joke) a waste of a tampon.  This has happened more than once.  And while it can be a little uncomfortable it definitely shouldn't be painful.  I haven't had that problem before at all, even when I was first learning how to wear tampons.  Huh.  I'm honestly a little perplexed. XD;;; ...Are you okay now?

Oh, a couple suggestions for the youngins considering trying tampons?  Make sure you get the kind with a plastic applicator.  Cardboard applicator is acceptable, but really.  Plastic's the way to go.  It's as comfortable as you can possible get putting a hunk of cotton in you.  I personally haven't tried the applicator-less ones cause those weird me out.  But... it seems like it'd be hard to aim into the right spot.... and they're so tiny.  That can't possibly be effective fffff--- You also might want to get used to touching yourself, if you're not.  Not saying all of you should go masturbate (oops, it's getting naughty in here) but if you're in a shower or something, at least try to get a better idea of your anatomy down there.  Make sure you can at least *start* to feel comfortable with your hands in an area you might find somewhat uncomfortable or awkward, and don't freak out or make a big deal out of it.  It's just your body, and it's ALWAYS good to know what's up with you personally, since everyone's body is different.  Also, if you have a friend or a close relative who uses tampons, talk to them.  I know it seems awkward now, but they will help you.  ...It helps if they can't ever shut up, like me.  But I was able to talk a friend through the process of putting in a tampon the RIGHT way and yeah, it's a little weird but who cares?  In the end, you're helping someone out, or just being helped out with something that JUST SO HAPPENS to have to do with the vagina.  Bet it wouldn't be as awkward for some if we experienced week-long nosebleeds once a month (or more.  or less.  everyone's different!)

Also, if you're wearing skimpy cosplay or something with a tampon?  Don't cut the string.  You'll still be able to get it out, of course, but you're gonna be spending a loooot more time.  In some underwear, the bottom section of fabric won't actually be attached to the "body" of the underwear, so you can slip whatever string of tampon is leftover in that space if you're extra concerned-- but really, the sweat and fluids produced tend to make the string kinda... wad up, I guess, and in all my time using them I've NEVER pulled my pants down at the toilet to find a string poking out of my underwear.  It's not so bad!

Have a hilarious pad/tampon ad! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpypeLL1dAs (Worksafe, but do realize since it is about PERIODS you might want to lower the volume depending on your current...computer situation.)

Serika
I was like...iunno...old. XD
It was a few years ago but definitely after I started and I was in my teens.
My mom kinda told me how to put them in (she only uses them for her heavy flow months) and said I should try one.
And when I went to take it out it felt like it was just ripping me apart. It took me forever to get it out cause I had to stop cause of the pain. Finally I gave up and just had to rip it out. It hurt but I was sick of the constant pain trying to slowly get it out.
I'm fine now, of course, but I will never use one again. :/
But also, I'm pretty small down there naturally so maybe it was my size that was the problem. We only have the smallest tampons in the house cause even my mom as a full grown woman is very small (me and my brother were C-sections cause she crushed her pelvis in a motorcycle accident.). I don't know if I'm really just THAT small or if I did it wrong or what. But I was still pretty young kinda. I mean, I started at 10-11 as I said earlier but waited a good few years before trying tampons. So yeah...not sure why it happened but it rid me of any idea of ever trying them again. :(

First of all,

I love this commercial way more, because I have actually done something similar for a social experiment!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXz9OcnRBYY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXz9OcnRBYY)

(work safe, but like the other commercial, says stuff...)

And umm.. while this is probably the most embarrassing story I have never told anyone really... I feel like you guys might appreciate it;

My mom was like me and really not okay with talking about this kind of stuff. I told her that
I'd started and she handed me some products and said to "read the instructions". Now to be
fair, this is probably the best advice anyone can give me as I will read the directions of ANYTHING
and I usually get a better idea of what to do than anyone just telling me.

However, In this instance I wasn't understanding a step or something. I was using tampons
with a cardboard applicator... and... well if you understand the mechanics of a tampon this
will make more sense but, I left the cardboard part in with it! (not the smaller cardboard
piece, the larger one that surrounds the tampon)

That was quite possibly the most UNCOMFORTABLE day I have ever had at school. And at
lunch I traded that for a pad and went the rest of the day deciding to swear off tampons
forever. I went home and re-read the directions... but it wasn't until a week later that
I figured out what I'd done wrong and tried again.. and I've been using them ever since.

----
So if you ever think you are weird... don't worry, I am sure there is a girl who has done
sillier things than you!

To avoid the period bloats if you get the pull back on your ramen intake, drink even more water than you normally do for cons, and eat lots of protien. I know for me cutting back on the salt and boosting the protien intake helps alot with some gut wrenching cramps I have had in the past. XP Also if your flow is gonna be heavy and you do suffer leaks but don't have the time for a full bathing experience right that minute but would still like to feel fresh. Well go old school and use some baby whipes or the girly adult version if you want to go that way but regular baby whipes are so multi purpose that it just seems easier to me! XD Also I know its been pointed out but no one likes to wash bloody towels of other people so as the Hitch Hikers of the Galaxy say always know where your towel is! Hmmm oh and for bigger girls out there! When it comes to pain pills check with your docter cause in some cases you can actually take more than is recommended on the bottle with no negative affects.

This happened to me every single con before AX.
Honestly. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.
Thankfully mine aren't usually painful and I don't have a heavy flow.
Taking a ibuprofen wouldn't hurt if you are on your period at con and have extra tampons/pads.
If your cosplay isn't bathroom friendly have a friend with you to help.
I prefer using pads cause you don't have to worry about them so much.
If you're staying at con or near it is always helpful, if you don't ask to borrow a friends for a few minutes if you have a large cosplay.
Public restrooms aren't the best place to do that sort of stuff.
But I'm probably not much help XD that's just my two cents

I talk about periods with my guy friends all the time. XD;; But you probably gathered from my posts I'll pretty much say everything.  NO BIG DEAL.

If I was having a period when I'd already made plans for a skimpy costume, then I'd probably just wear a tampon since they're easier (to me, anyways, and much easier to conceal and less worry aaaa i really can't praise them enough----) and for backup, one of those liners made for thongs so there'd be no concern of any little wings or anything sticking out.

OH, I remembered a great way to help with cramps my doctor told me awhile back.  Lay flat on the floor.  No pillows, DO NOT PROP YOUR HEAD UP... and I mean it when I say floor.  It needs to be a completely flat surface due to....your spine, or something.  I guess this causes the muscles to relax a lot, and helps the blood (the blood in your VEINS) circulate more evenly.  OR SOMETHING.  But it really works.  In my experience, there's a sharp increase in pain for several seconds, and then after a couple minutes the pain should be completely gone.

I learned that after having to do relays back in middle school. I would go strip down to my bra and shorts and lie down on the cool smooth cement floor. Probably not the cleanest place but the chill of the floor and just the position really helped especially if you are like me and get fevers based through the torso when feeling ill. Gut wrenching cramps and an overheated stomach cavity lead to a love of cold flat places. Sometimes I would just fall asleep in our basement on my stomach cause it help cool me down and help with cramps simultaniously.

So what happens if you are on your period at con and there are a lot of cute guys you want to talk to.  Does your period effect any sort of interaction with the opposite sex?  Do you pass up opportunities to find a new friend/love because you feel like crap?  I know most of my friends would act weird and keep more distance on their period, even if they normally would let me get vary close.  Besides being moody, how will this effect us guys?

Oh and I know what stomach craps are like.  Had them all jr. high, even went to the doctor after a while because they got so bad I thought I was dieing or something.  My advice, VARY loose undies + bottoms.  Stay relaxed, lie down flat like the others said helps too.  Heating pads are great as well, but if you are already hot use a wrapped ice pack :)

It depends on the girl. Some girls stay away and others get closer. Some get crabby and others get...well...horny.
And Im serious. I know girls like that. :/

Just really depends on the girl.

I thought girls were suppose to be most horny the week before (cuz the egg is released), not on their period.

That is true. 14 days after we have our period, our eggs are released. This lands on our PMS times before our period. However, the egg does not leave the body until during the period. This normally will happen in the middle of the period time but can differ from girl to girl. A girl can actually get pregnant during her period if the egg has not yet left her body.
Its like a cat in heat. Our bodies still want to save the egg and have a baby.

Thus, some girls will become more agressive during this time as a natural instinct.

I haven't made my way through all the posts, but I have to say that if you're going to buy a towel to use during your 'happy' time, should be BLACK.  Seriously ladies, black is a very forgiving color if you have trouble keeping control over Aunt Flo.

Our bodies still want to save the egg and have a baby.

or we're just horny from increased bloodflow

@katzen0466 (and anyone else): That's true!  Since most period blood isn't going to be...bright red like your red towel, any stains left on black shouldn't be noticeable at all.  Although, unless you like to lounge around in your towel after taking a shower or bath, it shouldn't be TOO big a deal as long as it's any medium-dark color since it's not like turning a faucet on once you get out.  Occasionally I'll prefer to dry my naughty bits with toilet paper instead, if i'm not sopping wet after getting out.  This sentence sounds dirty.  But that way, there really isn't any way a large amount of blood would find itself onto the towel, especially if hotel white is your only option.  And you can just flush it.
And it should be obvious, but don't flush tampons, applicators, pads, or any similar products down the toilet!  Even if it ain't your toilet, it'll eventually clog, and pity the poor person who has to potentially dig around in all the poop that your used tampon or condom clogged up.  I know cardboard applicators sometimes say "flushable!" but if toilet paper alone can clog up your home toilet sometimes, why make it worse?

I actually had this problem at Kumori back in 2008, but since then I've always been prepared. I carry ibeprophen with me always at cons and always have a stash of pads or know where I can get some immediately should the need arise. I also monitor the calendar 3 months in advance since my period tends to jump around sometimes. Sometimes it's at the end, sometimes it's at the start, and sometimes it's in the middle, though it always is a certain number of days apart generally.

I wear shorts under my skirts, and think ahead of bathroom issues. Binding and -going- to the bathroom are things that come to mind first with costumes. Wig is second lol.

Actually, it depends on the woman really. Sometimes hormones in women haven't quite worked out, and periods can come at irregular times. Some women become constant with the every 28 days, and some women never do. It just depends on the person.

I hear from Dr. like people that its all about how consistent your diet, exercise, and stress levels are.  Example: If you lead a fairly regular (boring-for short) life you will be a lot more stable.  If you are a crazy person who does random and exciting things all the time it may be off a bit now and then.  You mess with your hormones and have poor eating habits and all goes crazy.

My flawless no-leak menstruation recipe:

Super plus tampon changed every couple of hours paired with a thin maxi pad. If I'm wearing a skirt, biker shorts go on underneath.

I've had horrible experiences with unprepared bleeding when I was younger so I've learned that if you're not sure you can make it to a bathroom or an area where you can change your stuff out, then double up with a pad and a plug.

The nice thing about liners and tampons over maxi pads is that true, thick maxi pads tend to bunch up after a while, and I always feel like I look like I have a penis or something just because of the bulk.

As far as cramps/headaches go, I don't have that much any more. Usually I just popped a couple of Advil and was fine. Advil has ibuprofen in it which is an anti-inflammatory and good for headaches and general ick. Women-geared over the counter medicine (meaning you can buy it without a prescription) like Midol actually have the same stuff as Tylenol (acetaminophen) as well as caffeine. Caffeine boosts your metabolism which is why some of you gals might need to take a whizz a lot after drinking a lot of coffee or caffeinated tea.

Oh yeah. Birth control is AWESOME when it comes to pms/menstruation. I'm like clockwork now. Less problems. Less bleeding, and I know when stuff's going down. I highly recommend it to people who have menstruation issues. Many people take it for that and not just to avoid pregnancy. It's too late now to be get on birth control to be effective in time for the convention, but for general "I feel yucky and advil isn't working" pms stuff, it might be worth speaking to your doctor about. HBC (hormonal birth control) comes in many forms and can be really cheap.

For those of you on HBC, a word of advice: If you find out that you are due for your period during the con, do NOT just skip the placebo week for your period and continue on to your next pack. I tried this to dodge my period during a trip to Hawaii and ended up with a very light but still very much there two-week period. It was so frustrating.

I feel it is very safe to say that diet and exercise have an effect on your period, and I personally know many nurses who would agree with me.

I just realized that this thread exists. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP A LONG TIME AGO. My friends and I always have this conversation beforehand to see who has to suffer mother nature's wrath during a convention. Luckily I haven't had it happen to me yet, but one of my poor friends has had her period at nearly every convention we've attended. Just stay hydrated, change pads/tampons regularly (times differ depending on which product you're using), etc. I definitely make sure that I always have Midol on hand because my first two days are freaking hell (I've even cried a few times, ugh). Of course we're all different. The best thing you can do is take care of yourself. Cosplay is great but your health pretty much trumps anything.

I know how you feel with that two day thing. Mine's mostly the first though.
I spend the first day locked in the bathroom and I turn it into my own little safe house.
We have a big bathroom so I just drag stuff in there and live in there for the day.

I know it sounds weird but it's a necessity for me. The pain is so bad I will sometimes vomit and I prefer to throw up in the bathroom and not in a trashcan.
Luckily I haven't thrown up in a while but the pain is still pretty bad to the point I don't like to move.
Once a few years ago I had to crawl everywhere cause the pain was so bad I couldn't walk straight. :/

And yeah, a lot of you are going to say to go get pills but I have some already. I just use them sparingly cause of how expensive they are and in those cases I did but they are horse pills so they take a bit to kick in. Thus, I still get some nice pain before the relief comes and I can run downstairs and sit with a heating pack on my stomach the rest of the day.

^I'm no medical professional, but I can't help but feel that HBC would help you with this one. That just sounds way too uncomfortable for me. I would've seen the doc a long time ago if my cramps made me vomit, but that's because I'm most likely an emetophobic I've seen ladies with strange angles in their arms, and done preeetty well all things considered,  but someone vomits and I am the freak outta there. Ask my best friend. She can tell you all kinds of stories. I just can not deal with it for some reason.

Speaking of heat wraps, I bet you for those of you who will be crampy over K-Con, those heat wraps that stick on to your back would probably be awesome. The only drawback is you'll probably get sweaty. Better than being achy.

My friend had that same problem for awhile. And each time...she was at my house. She had severe vomiting and major cramps, and it was all due to extreme stress. D8 I don't know you personally, and don't know if the stress thing applies to you, but I would suggest taking a few lazy days before your period.

Hehe, my stress levels are always through the roof! ^^
Even on my lazy days...
I took a stress test for my health class last year and I wasn't feeling very stressed and I scored over 500. >.>; My life just revolves around me being stressed. A lot my periods come late because of it and the pain is another factor. When I get stressed my body gets really weak, fragile, and sickly.

Every day now I've been waking up feeling sick cause I'm stressed to get my cosplays done...

Ugh speaking of stress, weight loss, and periods. Does anyone else finally get all gunghoe and into the workout game only to be foiled by a particularly long pain and stress filled period?! Cause I totally get that! I will do so well and lose a nice amount of weight only to be hit with a 5-7 day long period and just cramps and the urge to vomit or expel what little food my body has managed to process in a total flush of my system.  :P I always feel so weak coming out of it that I just can't get right back on track and end up losing my beautiful progress. As it is I am pretty sure my period won't be starting till a few days after con so I can be all crampy and con-sick!

Yeah, I don't move much at that time of the month either.  I HAVE to get off my feet.  I don't get the infamous bitchiness, but I do want to be left alone and physically inactive.  And unfortunately none of the natural remedies have worked for me in the least- cutting out caffeine helps keep them light, but nothing helps the pain.  And am I the only one that, instead of late periods, gets them sooner under stress?

For the girls that feel like vomiting at that time... have you tried switching pain medication?  I used to feel like vomiting when I took Tylenol regularly (and did once).  Pain meds tend to irritate your stomach.  Also talk to your doctor to make sure you don't have something more serious going on.

That's a good point. Ibuprofen, the main ingredient in Advil, is really, really hard on your stomach if you take too much of it (no more than 12 a day)

If you take more than two Aleve a day, that is a very bad idea and is going to make you prone to ulcers. Aleve is the Falcon Punch of medication.

I got an advil pill stuck to the side of my esophagus, and whoo boy did that burn a nice little sore on my throat. Not nearly as bad as getting one of those awful Accutane pills stuck to my throat. I'm pretty sure I bled on that one. I had the throat equivalent of an ulcer in my esophagus for a couple of weeks.

Accutane= The Devil's Acne Treatment.

I've taken Aleve for about five years with no problem, but I make absolutely sure to drink at least 8 oz of water (preferably 16) whether I feel like it or not (cold water during cramps... :P).  It can definitely make you more prone to ulcers, but it's the best one out there for me.  The only other pain medicine that is at all effective is Tylenol (Acetaminophen, also the main ingredient in Midol), which did do a number on my stomach after years of use.  Aspirin, Advil, Ibuprofen, Excedrin... none of them work.  I've heard of Tylenol not working for other people, so it just depends on the person...

My periods used to be very, very, very bad. They would leave me bedridden and crying for days at a time and were coupled with a horrid flow that was no fun whatsoever. Now I just go absolutely nutters the week before my period and have a fairly regular flow that is so much better than what I used to have. My cramps are still hell though. If I don't heavily medicate it hurts to think for a week. But the best way I've found to deal with periods while at con is to simply medicate, make sure you keep that on hand at all times, try not to be too fed up with the drooling apes you're surrounded by and kill them and get a good straight-up eight hours of sleep every night. It will save your life. Or at least your sanity.

This might sound weird, but for me, eating frozen blueberries or frozen blackberries at the start of the day and then I'm pretty good the rest of the day. ^^

I don't know why it works... but it does really well! (o^_^o)b

HEY!!! Who you calling a... Okay nvm, you are probably right about the drooling.  But only HALF the time.. at least.  But not always!!!

Hopefully everyone can just eat blueberries and you will all be happy clams the whole time ^.^

D: Very good chance that I will be on my period during con...

I don't know about you guys, but when I'm on my period & PMSing, my boobs get bigger and I have to go up to a DD unless I want to squish myself in a D...
And they've already started to grow. DX
So I'll either be PMSing (if I'm not already now. XP Haven't really been around people to notice) or on my period during con.
Lovely, right? ~ 3~

I'd rather it be late than on con.

Hopefully like..a week or two late for me. ; 3;
I don't want it on Orientation for my college, either! Cause I'll be grumpy ALL day around people I have to deal with for at least three and that's a bad first impression...

So bring on the stress to make it late! D<

Whoo hoo con-colds.

Oh, Hypnos, I have this. My will overpowers everything though. I have been holding off several colds all summer due to construction work. There is no way I will succumb to the sickness now.
On another note, I'm going to have my period at the con... And I am wearing white pants... shoooooot... *Crossing fingers in the hopes that nothing will ruin my cosplay*

well you see in a way Mother nature is nice to me because I usually only bleed to near death every other month and I'm not even taking some sort of pill, I think it might because of my poor diet or i have some sort of terminal illness that I'm going to die from..... Should I go the doctor my mom says its no big deal though but IDK? But Mother nature hates me because when ever I make plans for something like camping it comes back. my birthday was only a few days ago and I thought I would get a birthday gift from her but I didn't so....

but really do you think I should go the doctor, its been like this for almost a year now  :-[

stardust, periods differ for every woman. You're probably fine, but if you feel like it's really a problem, it might be a good idea to see your doctor. The only thing I feel you need to realize is that your doctor might request a pap smear. In case you don't know, a pap smear requires you to get butt naked in that little cloth gown and have your doc go inspect your hoo-ha. Your doc takes a little stick, scrapes the inside of your vagina, and that's pretty much it.

I've had it done. It's horribly awkward, but it's really not bad at all. It's a good idea in general just to make sure everything is functioning fine (and actually its part of a woman's yearly physical). It doesn't hurt at all (at least it didn't for me), and I'm sure your doctor would be very kind about it. Even if you see a pediatrician, some peds doctors do these.

Now this does NOT mean that a pap smear will happen. I'm just saying you might want to be aware of the possibility. Usually a special appointment is made for that sort of thing.

Can you tell I work in a clinic? I work in a clinic. The exact clinic where I had my pap smear. I was prodded gently, scraped politely, got dressed, and walked about fifty feet from my doctor's office to my desk. Awkward. And mildly hilarious.

I seriously won't be able to look at you guys in your outfits without wondering whether or not you have the need for a maxi pad or a tampon.

Wow, this topic if beautiful, just through I would say!
As well as that I might be having said issue this con, just as I did last year.
I always get it either the very end of the month or the very begining. XD Kumo is in the jurisdiction every year.
So the very last day, last year, WITH NO PROTECTION in site and in a boys room... and wearing a white cosplay. XD I had my dot, Was such master. GOOD THING THAT SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM THIS YEAR!
8D Zuko is red and Russia's a thick coat. XD Heat stroke may occur, but no bleeding. ^^;;;;
D: Lets just hope mood swings aren't all stupid.

I was getting really worried that I was going to start RIGHT as con began, but thankfully the stars alligned and I got it almost a week early on Sunday, which means yesterday was the last day of my cursed gift.

Funny story, last year my friend started on the second day and forgot to grab pads, so she sent me down to the little shop in the hotel to get her some. So I walk in and look around for a bit before asking the lady at the counter where the pads are, she then seriously looks at me and was like "pads of paper?" I tried to explain to her the kind of pads but she kept getting embarrassed and going "I'm not sure what you mean...." I face-palmed so hard.

stardustninja- you don't have a terminal disease!  Your hormones are probably just a bit out of whack, and maybe you do need to eat better and reduce your stress levels, if you have a lot going on.  Try cutting out junk food and seeing if that helps, get proper sleep, all that fun healthy stuff nobody gets enough of.

I lived with my grandparents for a while years ago.  It was a very awkward day the day I forgot to stock up ahead of time and needed to go to the store on Sunday, and explain exactly why it was necessary to go right now to my grandfather.  Hilarious in hindsight though!

I swear to god the forum gods are against me trying to post this:

It would be no problem.

So my uterus decided to surprise attack me. Looks like it's a periodcon for me!
@Lychee: THAT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA, mainly because I could then walk up to your table and act as if we were trading drugs. "Hey....you got the stuff?"
Title: Re: Mother Nature Interruptions? (Girls Only Material)
Post by: lychee-twist on September 02, 2010, 09:57:39 pm
And I'd be all "Who's askin'? Depends on what you're talkin' about. You want light stuff or super stuff? I've even got the finest Columbian super plus stuff that's non-scented".

Since, like I said, I'm part of Rocket Sushi Studio, I was thinking of using the term "Cotton rocket" as code. I know buying tampons and pads can be really embarrassing so I don't mind helping people out.

I'm so totally for doing this, but I really don't want to be your period supply for the entire convention (Like you only get your tampons from me, not like a situation where you had some and then ran out or had an unexpected flow). If you guys could please bear that in mind, it'd make me happy.

Tampons and pads are expensive. ಠ_ಠ Yay, coupons!

I was all worried it would start over the weekend... (and for the past two years it hasn't been even close to the con weekend) but over time, the week changes and this week was my week...

... and I was all, "Noooooo. You better start early this week so it'll be over." But no. It started two days ago. So I get to have the painters in while I'm running around as Gunner Yuna, Draco and Tomo. (I'm mostly worried about Yuna!) And also, that means I have to bring stuff with me. And I wanted to avoid carrying a purse. (cries a little)

But I'll get over it. It's better it happens now and not randomly during the con...

@ lychee-twist: OH MY GOODNESS I LOVE YOU. If I run out, I will for sure stop by. You are my new hero!

I know I'm technically "necro-ing" this thread, but I have some valuable advice to keep the red ninja's cramp jutsu at bay.  Does everyone here know what I'm talking about when I say dance stretches?  You sit down, spread your legs out as far as possible to either side, and try to connect your ear to one knee at a time. Then you try to connect your nose to the floor in front of you.

Obviously you should do these BEFORE you even don your cosplay, and I find that doing this in the mornings and evenings minimalizes the pain on either side of my crotch.

You know what? While I'm at it, let's get these 'embarrassing' words out in the open.  Menstrual blood.  Menstruating.  Vagina.
SHEDDING THE LINING OF YOUR UTERUS BUAHAHA!
These are not bad words, girls!

One time I got on ankle sliced, and my mom put on on it, for the ride to the ER.

As random as this sounds,  my wilderness survival teacher said if lost in the woods to use them while trying to make a fire as they are really dense cotton and flammable.

I do admit I like things that can have more then one use.

Every FAH-REAKIN' CON I GO TO. Because my two regular conventions are Sak and Kumo, at the beginning of the month usually which is always when it comes. Unfortunately I was staffing at Sak(And will be at Kumo), so I can't just run off to the bathroom whenever I need to. I need to tell people I'm leaving and wait for someone to relieve me.

I keep thinking that if I hang out with other girls more often, the timing will change, because it's weird and when girls hang out long enough together their periods synchronize. But yesterday I learned that my female friends in Eugene all have it at the beginning of the month too. T____T I'm doomed.

I'm going to start sewing secret pockets into my cosplays. I've never thought of that... :D

I just wear pads, although I really do hate having periods at cons.
Title: Re: Mother Nature Interruptions? (Girls Only Material)

Mine usually comes late in the month, so it should be in about a week or two and I should be clear for Kumoricon. I hope I am, at least, since both of my cosplays have a lot of white. I had it at Sakuracon this year, in a mostly-white, non-bathroom-friendly cosplay. That was nerve-wracking.

I occasionally get cramps, but it's not that often and I usually just stick it out. I don't like taking medication unless I absolutely have to, so I just lie down for a bit. I usually get really intense pain for about fifteen minutes, and then several hours of feeling fine, and then the cycle repeats itself. It doesn't happen often though, only three times in the last two years.

I know one thing that makes it harder is when I am in pain I take ibuprofen, just works better for me.
But you can't take it when pregnant.
Tylenol is what you can take but it just doesn't help as much for muscle pain (in my opinion)
It is really weird not knowing when I will get my next one will be, after baby you have like a 10 day period and then depending if you breast feed or not, can go with out one for up to 6 months.
There really are a lot of not well know things about being pregnant.  Like needing to pee all the time, starts even before your tummy gets big.  yay...:P

I only have 4 a year, haha....lol The pill is great. :D The only con I have to think about when it comes to my period is Sakura con as it depends on which weekend it's on. I've only been on once and it happened when I was waiting in line for a concert so I went to the BR and put a tampon in and bam I was back to waiting in line and then had fun at the concert. Mine didn't bug me that year, tampons are magical. <3

I was lucky last year not to have my period during the con. And I was surprised since normally when I'm excited for something like Kumoricon, it starts up and I'm like:
"FUUUUUUU MOTHER NATURE I'MA GONNA KILL JOOOOOO". (And last year it was funny that my friend started hers on Day 0, then my other friend started hers about an hour later, THEN my sister started hers seriously right after that. They all looked at me waiting for mine to start, and it never did. >:3)

For me, my troubles are these: VERY heavy bleeding, and I experience really bad cramps to the point I'm in tears, and I take pain relievers too. It still doesn't do much to ease them. I'm not really moody during my monthly, but I'm normally exhausted and just want to hide in my room til it's all over. =/ So I REALLY hope mine doesn't start during the con this year, and if it does, it will suck. But luckily, I'm in a simple cosplay this year. =D

^^; tell me about it. Even if mine does decide to go against me this year, it won't be that bad because my cosplays are fairly normal clothes and no white.

^You are quite lucky, my friend. But yet again, my whole body is off, including my cycle. I will seriously have 2 periods in one month, and I skip one the next month. I have seen a doctor for my problems, and they say they'll put me on the pill (which I'm nervous about slightly cause I've heard sooooo many bad things about it).

I went on the pill at the start of the year for cramps and I haven't had any bad side effects. I had a couple pimples the first couple months but they cleared up when my body got use to it. I was nervous too but I have to say it was probably the best thing I've done. I don't have any cramps anymore (which before were basically taking me out of commission for 2 days a month and growing in the number of days) and I can time when I'm ganna get my period down to the hour so I don't have to worry mother nature's sneak attacks >.> She has some warped sense of fun.

Hi gals!
I would like to start off by saying I did NOT read all 13 pages of this topic b/c I'm lazy and should be in bed cause I have work in the AM, but I decided to troll the forums. So if I repeat anything, sorry  :-\

This is only my 3d year of k-con, but last yr I got my RIGHT b4 it started (sucks for me cause I have a 12 hour drive to get there). Mine (like a lot/most ppl) are super painful. When I was in middle school I would have to take 1 day a month off school to stay home and writhe in pain. I've gotten in more under control since then. I find that pain killers help, but what helps the most is therma-care for menstrual cramp relief. There were rumors that it was going to be taken off the market, but I stocked up so can't confirm/deny it.
As far as cosplay goes, I cosplay as Soi Fong (hence the name  ;D) and you wouldn't think it would be too hard to get in/out of, but it is a bit.... complicated. I wear pads personally, and so I just make sure to have an extra one in the bag that we carry with us, to change when I need to. I make sure to hit up the bathroom a little sooner than necessary because you never know how long the line will be.

We all know it's an inconvenience to have this problem during k-con, and I'd probably say about 1/3-1/2 of the girls at the con are going thro the exact same thing you are. Just try not to let it influence your trip too much. (ps- this is why I've never considered getting a white cosplay outfit)

That sounds pretty good! I heard it makes you crazy, at times, if on high doses of it. And yes, mother nature has a VERY warped sense of fun.... -___-

I don't know if I've posted here before or not but I'll just add my two cents in. (:
I personally have a really heavy period and have cramps the day before and the first day of my period. To prevent some pretty bad pain I just take three ibuprofen, and am done with pain for the most part for the rest of my period. I avoid cold drinks, and if I know I'll be drinking anything cold, I'll take some more medicine. So if any of you girls have that problem, just pack your medicine, and maybe some tea to drink at the hotel or wherever you're staying.
Bring plenty of pads and or tampons, panty liners never hurt, either! Even if you start your period or just have your period during the con, don't let it get you down! So long as you as are having fun, you won't notice you're on your period!

AS CHAN!!!

And yes... it has. It just sucks because up to 48 hours before... I get the whole PMS thing and grouchy and in the fetal postion in bed... and generally none of the pain killers works; unless you consider me being knocked out by them. That was the Kumoricon at the Doubletree. It made me cry... alot...

I'll keep some tampons and things at my table in artist alley if anyone would like me to. I did last year, and no one took me up on the offer, but I was there! A soldier bearing cotton and absorbency!

I love, love, love my birth control because of the obvious thing of not being pregnant (I don't find the idea attractive at all at the moment) but also because I've got my period down to the day it will happen. It's awesome to be that regular. Given I have my period every month by choice, it's just fun to be sexually active and still have my body go "Congratulations! You're childless! Brain, you celebrate while the ovaries and I will go over here and kick the **** out of my back and guts with self-pity in the meantime. Hooray!".

Luckily my nose bleeds seldomly, and when it does, it would require only a panty liner and not an actual tampon ;) There ain't no way I'm shoving a panty liner up there.

You guys are all making me quite happy I always have chocolate and milk stocked up, and consume a large amount of milk every day. That and I don't get cramps. I always get achey knees and joints. I'll only ever get cramps if I don't take ibeprophen (1-3) right when it kicks in, and if I've been lax on my in-take of milk.

I've only been bothered once so far at con with my period, but I do always pack liners, over-night and daily pads just in case.

I'm usually pretty lucky that my period ends right before con, or starts right afterwards. It wasn't fun once when it started right after I got off a plane though from my first convention >.<

By the way. I heard midol works better than ibeprophen for general pain and fatigue? I've only have tried it once before, so I'd like to hear what others think?
Title: Re: Mother Nature Interruptions? (Girls Only Material)

Midol is basically acetaminophen with caffeine in it, if I remember right. That's basically just Tylenol and caffeine. No, seriously. Caffeine. Caffeine is great for making people have to poop and go to the bathroom so not only does it help a bit with headaches, it will help with fatigue and bloating. I think there might be ibuprofen in it, but I don't remember all that well.

Really it's just a pill that's slightly fancy with no real "BANG. We have this and no one else does!" bit. I never bought it, and my mom only did once when she told me about it. She's a registered RN so she's quite familiar with the benefits of hot coffee and a good poop in the morning. As my aunt says (the head nurse at Meridian Park hospital when she's on shift) "There's nothing better than a BM in the AM".

midol also has a diuretic in it,
diuretic help get excess water out of you system, they put it in midol to help with the bloating, but getting rid of extra water.

Tho (this may sound simple) I tend to think if being on your period makes your body have extra water in it, maybe your body needs it that way?

But yeah that why women can have trouble fitting into clothes that time of the month.

I just would wear clothes that were comfy if I could or a skirt

I'm just glad I'm on birth control cause mine were really messed up.  Now I can tweek my doseage (not ofter) by a couple of days if there is something important coming up.  Luckily for me this year I still have a week before I get mine.  Ahhhh better living through chemicals.

Last year I had a horrible one and I couldn't even stand to stay in my cosplay so I got into street clothes and hit the closest bathroom every hour.

Speaking of Mother Nature interruptions, I didn't get my period, but I did get a Urinary tract infection! Yyyyaaaay severe discomfort! Hoooraaaay antibiotics that I'm not horribly allergic to!

Last thing I needed right now was to spend my precious, precious minutes in Urgent Care and getting a prescription at Safeway TT^TT I was NOT about to go to a con with this thing out of control though. No way in hell.

Ouch! Those are not fun, but easier to get in hot weather.

Be sure to drink plenty of water and cranberry juice if you like the taste, there are supplements if you don't.

I have a packed a few girly supplies in my first aid kit,(which I forgot to do last year :P) just some liners and tampons.
So just in case anyone needs something, for like evening of day O and first half of con or so, I will be in the board room on the second floor of the hillton, on the map marked as volunteer and con office. After that just around con in general. Here is to hoping tho no girl is in a situation where ya suddenly get interrupted at con.  Con is for FUN TIMES!
