Yeah. That Fic.
I have one with the increasingly appropiately named "Obsession", a Pokémon fic (it won Best Novella a few years back). Yeah when I started, the title only refered to the main character. Now it's sort of...taken over my life.
Just started on the 21st chapter. I've been working on it for about...nine years now, and this chapter wil mark the end of the first year.
The main character in the fic is nine right now. I have him at 26 in the events of canon.
...I think I signed on for more than I bargained for.

At what point does the term "fic" no longer apply and "multi-volume novel" does..?

Work on it when you enjoy doing so; take breaks from it when you need to. Know it's been appreciated in its early incarnations, and there is nothing you need to prove to anyone as you progress.

I started a FFVII fanfiction called The Loveless just about two and a half years ago. It's got like 23 chapters and it's nearly done, but I just can't seem to finish it.

Yes. Although now the time gets to skip more since the first year is set up.

Sounds like you need to animate it, if it is as good as the award says, and its got enough material to chose from. Sell it and make some $$!! (unless you can produce it.) Have you tried publishing it?
If you have the first year done, work on the new changes in the character and pick a year to start up again with!

mine's called Animal Magnetism, which is a Chouji harem fic... and I think I am on chappie 23. I've taken a short break from it for a while to work on other fics but I plan on starting again rather soon ^^

thanks a bunch. It's kinda tiring to think of a new lemon every time I go for chappie and, in the mean time, make Chouji that much more badass in the action fighting, which the fic is, more or less, based around.

Speaking of lemons, have you heard of Chibihentaichan's 18+ panel at Kumoricon, 'Citrus & You'? Worth checking out sometime.
