Title: KumoriCat Ball - Saturday, April 24th in Portland
Post by: Jamiche on March 19, 2010, 06:08:14 pm
(Thanks to superjaz for naming the event  :))

Our first mini-event for 2010 will be an anime music inspired dance Saturday, 24th from 6pm to 10pm at:

Multnomah Art Center (http://www.multnomahartscenter.org/contact-us/hours-and-directions/) (see link for directions)
7688 Southwest Capitol Highway
Portland, OR 97219-2489

There is not a strict dress code (no ripped jeans, flip-flops or t-shirts), and cosplay is encouraged as always (don't forget the cat ears!).

Minimum age to attend the dance is 14 years old.  14 to 17 year-olds attending the dance need to bring a parental permission form, and all attendees are required to show ID.  If you do not have some form of ID (state issued, school ID, etc), you will not be admitted to the dance.

Tickets will be $10 if you pre-reg, $15 at the door.  For those that pre-reg, you will be entered in drawing for a door prize, and you won't have to wait in line to get into the dance.  Pre-reg is available here (http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaid=202082), and is open until Weds, April 21st.

As Dawn said, we will be awarding prizes for best use of theme, so have fun with the cat ears.

We hope to see you there :)

In that case I'm hi-jacking this thread for music requests.  What should we play?  Links to artists and or albums welcome.  I'm personally craving "Would you like to date my avatar?" and Vinyl Shakerz "One night in Bangkok"

Lady Gaga music is super fun to dance to ~

Pretty much anything with a good beat for fist-pumping makes me a happy camper =)

You can't forget David Bowie.

I mean, it would be BAMF with Gaga, Ke$Sha, AND David Bowie.

If there's a lack of David Bowie, I have three of his soundtracks on my PSP that I can easily put on someones computer.

Fear not for I own both the platinum collection (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Platinum-Collection-David-Bowie/dp/B000AMUU94) and the Labyrinth soundtrack.  Bowie will be represented.

3oh!3 and GaGa are a must, kesha, not so much, imo. But it will happen and there are people who dislike all 3....
Looking forward to attending this dance in some fashion (working or just regular attendance)

14+
No jeans, thinking about a best-cat-ears-contest.
6-10, IIRC
$10 prereg, $15 at door.  We provide water and snacks and concessions.
New location, Multnomah Arts Center, really nifty with back patio area if the weather is good.

From what I understand it's you be fourteen or older to play but you'll need a parental permission slip filled out and some form of id and for those 18+ just need id.  I think were shooting for 6pm start time because buses stop running at 10pm which gives us 4 hours to get a groove on.  I think general con rules apply to the dress code.

Jackie correct me if I'm wrong...

There will be some house and techno spun.  Fear not.  But if you have favorites go ahead and request them on this thread.  It's what it's for.

I have a question about the dress code. I have this shirt that I got and it would be great for a rave/dance like this and I am wondering if I can wear it but it does fall under the t-shirt category.

(https://www.kumoricon.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs.sears.com%2Fis%2Fimage%2FSears%2F027000VC01806918%3Fhei%3D600%26amp%3Bamp%3Bwid%3D600%26amp%3Bamp%3Bop_sharpen%3D1%26amp%3Bamp%3Bqlt%3D90%2C0%26amp%3Bamp%3BresMode%3Dsharp%26amp%3Bamp%3Bop_usm%3D0.9%2C0.5%2C0%2C0&hash=5afb30e118006a54d3577145339effa05b951728)

I would like to wear it :) But I understand if you don't want me to.

Looks like the majority of TD Bro Chad is going to be going to this :3 I'm a little excited.

Music Recommendations~ I'm ust going to list a bunch of stuff I think would be awesomely cool.

If at all possible it would be cool to play some Lonely Island music for laughs. (It's pretty heavy on the cursing, but I bet there are some edited versions out there) I'm on a Boat and Jizz in my Pants are popular.

For some regular dance music Ratatat pleeeeeaaaaaase.
-Seventeen Years
-Wild Cat
-Lex
Pretty my anything of theirs is amazing. I especially like their Hip Hop remixes but those may again be on the the cursing side a bit.

Seconding, thirding, whatevering Lady Gaga music.

If possible, songs by The Adventures of Duane and Brand0. They do nerdcore raps to oldschool video games.

GIRLS GENERATION! Korean Pop Band that is pretty popular right now. Gee is one of their most popular singles. There's also Oh!, Run Devil Run, and other things I can't think of right now.

Daft Punk is a must. Something other then Harder, better, faster, stronger though. (One more time, Around the world, Digital Love)

Cha Cha Slide.

Anamanaguchi. "Plays loud, fast music with a hacked NES", ummm for songs, Helix Nebula, Power Supply, Sting Operation.

And anything else I could suggest is probably not appropriate/isn't good to dance to/and isn't stuff the most people would know or like.

I'll probably be going with TD Bro Chad, and I want to suggest AURAL VAMPIRE. They're a Japanese band with awesome gothic-rave-like music. My favorite songs are Vampire Ecstasy and Hot Blood Workout.
Their mp3s are a little bit hard to get a hold of, but I have most of their songs on my computer, so let me know if you need any of them.

I recommend-
Yuki Kimura - Love and Joy

Maybe some cool Vocaloid stuffs? -shot- I dunno if people will like that so you don't have to take me seriously on that one.

I'll be going as a Magnet!Taito XD So i though some vocaloid would be cool

If you can burn them to disc I'll play them.  My CD players will work with MP3s as long as there not buried under a lot of directories.  Although I like using regular CD files better for quality.

It should be fine as long as it's "peace bonded", isn't used as a weapon and common sense applies.  Be aware of your surroundings and ensure enough space around you that your not whacking someone with poi.  We've had poi and other glow toys used at the Kumoricon dances in the past this shouldn't be any different rules wise.

I would kind of like a little more info on the dress code.  What's acceptable / what isn't?  Seems really vague.  Would a button up shirt with an undershirt + jeans + tennis shoes be considered OK or..?

no flip flops, T-shirts, or ripped jeans [/qoute]

So, yes, sneakers and jeans are okay.  We do not allow ripped jeans.  Flip flops are disallowed because you can't dance in them.  Well, you can, but, it likely wouldn't go well for you after about 20 minutes.

Hi! Despite having read through the thread I'm still confused on this dresscode.

So far I have gathered that you can't wear RIPPED jeans (whole are fine) or flip flops... and tee shirts (as said by Jamiche in OP)? But Nikkiolie's faux ripped tee shirt was okay'd (by Rathany)?

Are we allowed to wear tee shirts? It'd be awful to show up and be denied entry 'cause of dress code.

And from what I can tell from the communication in this thread the dress code rules have gone through somewhat of an evolutionary process, haha, I understand how that goes. ;D

Thank you for your further clarification. =)

The shirt pictured earlier is technically a T-shirt, but is still a nice shirt.  It's nicer than your run of the mill T shirt.  The best thing to do is to email Kumoricat@ to get your outfit okay'd.

The dress code has evolved from dressy-ish to more casual, to appeal to more people.

Regarding the t-shirt that was asked about - it's the style of the shirt.  So, while there may be "rips" in it, it's deliberate and not the end result of a bad run in with a pair of scissors.

What we don't want to see is someone showing up in some ratty old t-shirt, ripped jeans because they didn't care enough to clean up a bit.  You are going out to a social event.. try a little.

That being said... I am a big fan of nice jeans and a nice shirt (and that can be a t-shirt).  If it looks like you tried, odds are you are fine.  But if it looks like you just came from the gym.. probably not.

But, like Rathany said, if you have concerns, you can always email kumoricat@ and we will try and answer your questions.

So are you saying if its nice New jeans with rips in it on purpose then its allowed? Also is it allowed to wear tube tops, short goth skirts, shirts that have rips in them on purpose? trying to make my outfit.

wait! what about tuxedo shirts?
Title: Re: KumoriCat Ball - Saturday, April 24th in Portland
Post by: AllyKat on April 22, 2010, 07:52:55 pm
Lets make it simple as crayola here:

NO TO WEAR:
Ripped jeans (be they store bought or otherwise, cause how can we tell the difference?)
Ratty/Old T-shirts; screen tees, printed tees, tuxedo tees
NOTE: this does not include shirts similar instyle to the babydoll designer shirt shown in a previous post.
flipflops/thong style sandals (safety and dress code issue)

ALLOWED TO WEAR:

Nice attire as you would wear out to a club or school dance. Please dress appropriately for an event with minors in attendance (as in; lets keep those booties covered please!) and wear shoes you can wear the
entire night.

As a note; we are not trying to be hard or condemning on clothing choices. If it looks like you tried, we wont turn you away. Please try and dress up for this event as we'd like it to be a classy "Cat Ball" You'd wear your best dance attire to that wouldn't you?

If it helps; pretend you are going on a date with a cute guy/girl or your boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife but before you leave you have to pass approval by Stacy and Clinton for a night on the town... how would you dress to impress?

Do I need to make a list of items okay or does that solve the problems?

My sister and I aren't going as Seto and Joey anymore, but we're still going and dressing up! (I'm going to go out and buy me some cat ears, since my dog ears don't go with my dress.)

I also have to buy some new heels because I didn't bring any with me for this weekend....

Note:  We will be able to continue to check the Kumoricat@ email address even once set-up has started.  Yay for smartphones!  I mention this because sometimes people have assumed that they can't ask us last-minute questions.  You can!

So, everyone, please remember IDs, parental permissions if needed aaaannndd.... whatever else you might need.

Now, I must sleep.  Busy day tomorrow.  (... I still haven't made the cat ears for my outfit ...)

There will be anime and video game music.  Pretty heavy early in the night and sprinkled throughout the rest of the sets later on.  Although there will be lots of 4/4 on the floor and some game remixes as well.

I mainly just stuck to my group of friends I brought with me since for most of them it was their first experience with a dance like that or anything related to Kumoricon at all, but now I got the ones who haven't been to Kcon before wanting to go, and one of them actually pre-reged now! Woot.

So, who wants to help me compile a list of some of the songs that were played at the dance?  I'd like to get a list of some of those nerdy songs together to blast on my MP3 player while driving .. in between death metal tracks.

Edit: this is what I can remember ..

O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHky57VKWTY)
Caramelldansen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXK9ShllebQ)
Crazy Frog (is that the real title?) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKK9ypkclZM)
Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qUk94eSu2c)
