Title: Looking for a 30" long, 2" wide bamboo pole?
Post by: Luana-neko on June 27, 2005, 07:59:03 pm
Anyone know of a place around Portland that I could get a bamboo pole about 30" long and 2" wide? If I could get two that'd be even better, but just one is fine for now. I'm working on a mallet (AKA fuzzy mallet of DOOOOOM as I like to call it), and I need the bamboo for the handle. I'm really not sure where I could find any ^.^;;

Also if anyone has ideas on the best way to make the head of the mallet (a 15" diameter and 27" long cylinder, basically), input would be greatly appreciated. It needs to be sturdy enough to get bumped into a lot in crowds as well as handle being lightly tapped on people/objects/etc for fun outside of the con. My current idea is to use lots of 1" wide balsa wood strips around a circle shape and then sanding the joints so it is a nice smooth circular shape, but if anyone knows of maybe some pre-formed material (like strong cardboard tubes or something) and where to get them then it'd be greatly appreciated ^_^

hmmm. check Michaels? You can also check the classifieds in the newspaper, you might be lucky enough to spot some.

For the head, you might be able to find something in PVC pipe, but I'm not sure.  Try hardware or plumbing stores.  For the handle, if you know anyone in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) ask them; bamboo is what most of the weapons are made of.
