So there's that anime EVERYONE has seen, the standard awesomeness, and if not the anime community thinks you're mental, and then there's the anime that pop out of no where, becomes hugely popular, and suddenly everyone has to see it.
So my friend is coming to her first anime convention this year, and she just started getting into anime by brainwashing of me and my other friends. So what anime's do you think she should make sure to see before she comes? Or what would you recommend to a new con goer as far as anime needing to see before going to a con? Cause you know all those inside anime jokes, and the cosplay contest, just won't be the same if you don't get the jokes being made.
Besides these ones:
Ouran High Host Club
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Fruits Basket
InuYasha
Naruto
Death Note
Bleach
Full Metal Alchemist
-
Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z
-
HEY. I watch those animes because there awesome. Naruto is not standard.
-
One Piece? o 3 o
-
azumanga daioh!
-
At least one ep of Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei
-
Haruhi Suzumiya and D.Gray Man are a few more. Then there's of course sailor moon.
Then there's the none anime like vocaloid, Hetalia, and some main stream video games. But video games are a bit of a different interest for some.
-
Soul Eater is kinda popular..
-
I can't believe kimiski didn't write Slayers! OMG! Stop the presses! lol
Make her watch something Gundam? Or Macross? Neon Genesis Evangelion?
Movies; anything Ghibli, Akira, and it's a little late, but Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers, (gotta see that every Christmas everyone), Ghost in the Shell.
Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5CM per Second.
Outlaw Star, Haibane Renmei. Maybe some Tenchi Muyo, or Ranma 1/2.
-
Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers
Ahhh thanks for reminding me *^* I always forget what it's called.
Although those were good anime recommendations, for a few of those inside jokes and discussions from those aren't brought up that often among the masses... I think this thread is more to weed out the first-priority shows.
I'll second Gundam, Macross, Evangelion, Ghibli stuff, and Ghost in the Shell for what's well-known, though.

Spice and Wolf. A very good love story. No wait. AN AWESOME LOVE STORY. So read it or watch it now at your local PC.
-
Heh, I think I've seen like 3 of all those titles. And of those 3, I haven't seen more than about 9 or 10 episodes into the series.
-
Chobits! Elfen Lied!
She's already seen Pokemon, right? Speed Racer? Lupin III?
-
every thing thats been on adult swim
-
so why isnt sailor moon on that list for the older ones xD
-
Soul eater
Higurashi no naku koro ni
d grey men
Tsubasa chronicles
Xxx hollic
Code geass
Ranma 1/2
Shaman king
Nabari no ou
-
3 more that weren't mentioned above that are a must!
Baccano!
Rurouni Kenshin
Hellsing
Also never hurts to watch a little Disgea, Outlaw Star or Samurai Champloo
-
Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho ... classics
sry if they were mentioned already--i was too lazy to look.
-
As much as I like to say yes to a lot of these, some of those previously mentioned sound better off once you get into anime (in my opinion anyway). I'd recommend "Voice of a Distant Star" and "Kino's Journey" in a heartbeat but not for someone new.
Sailor Moon
Ah My Goddess
Rurouni Kenshin
Trigun
Ranma 1/2
Tenchi Muyo
Kiki's Delivery Service
Totoro
Spirited Away
Outlaw Star
Dragon Ball Z
Full Metal Alchemist
Evangelion
Knowledge of Final Fantasy 4, 7, 9, 10 and Kingdom Hearts 1, 2
That should help get through most of the inside jokes and classics.
-
Any Ghibli movie or anime from the '90's~
Oooh, and I agree with Tokyo Godfathers, haven't seen it in awhie but it's awesome opossum.
-
Besides these ones:
Ouran High Host Club
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Fruits Basket
InuYasha
Naruto
Death Note
Bleach
Full Metal Alchemist
Hmm... I'm kinda with a few other people, call me an old otaku if you must, but some of those (Ouran? Death Note? Furuba?) Are more series you'd get to know if you really got into anime... I'd define Noob Anime as anything readily accessible or easy to watch, AKA things that have been/are on cable or network television (that doesn't really include the funimation channel, since not everyone has it, same with anime network... does that even still exist?)
So MY list would be...
Pokemon
Digimon
Sailor Moon
DragonBall
DragonBallZ
CowboyBebop
Outlaw Star
Full Metal Alchemist
Trigun
Yu-Gi-Oh
Yu-Gi-Oh GX
Speed Racer (Original)
Gundam
Gundam Wing
Tenchi Muyo
Bleach
Naruto
Almost any Movie by Studio Ghibli
Metropolis
Thats all I can think of right now... I'm sure there is more... They just have to be things you can get at Blockbuster, or right off the TV... Readily accessible, easy to swallow, beginners anime... Thats my $.02 anyway...

It's standard in the fact that if you don't know about it at least your kind of out of the loop bigtime. It doesn't have to not be un-awesome, that's not the way I meant it.
And thanks for all the awesome suggestions! Some made me go, "Ohhhh how could I have forgotten that!" :D
-
Ya mean like Slayers? lol
You must have successfully channeled Lina Inverse!
-
Anything Clamp is just about good, and seeing as xxxHolic and Tsubasa are popular, I'd suggest one of those two.
-
every thing thats been on adult swim

You forgot knowledge of FF6...also a crowd favorite^^ :D
-

Agreed
Of their more well known series, I think this would be a good start for newcomers (in order of showing)
Magic Knights Rayearth
Cardcaptor Sakura/Angelic Layer
xxxHolic/Tsubasa
Chobits
X
Miyuki-chan in Wonderland is debatable depending on the person.
-
Oh, yes. Chobbits is a must! :)
-
Ya mean like Slayers? lol
You must have successfully channeled Lina Inverse!
Oh no, I sat her down and forced her to watch the first two seasons over one weekend, lol.
And for a second I thought someone wrote, "Miyuki Chan in Wonderland..." *shivers*

*Raises hand* That was me. But in my defense I said it's debatable depending on the person.

Magic Knights Rayearth
Ehh, maybe skip that one, unless they're like 5 y/o... ;o)
Go with Sailor Moon / Ronin Warriors.
I guess I should weigh in with MY list now too, eh? Will try to pick out fairly obvious stuff.
Here goes, from a forum n00b and an anime semi-n00b (almost, but not quite)... Only in a minimal order:
Dragonball Z (Dragonball for some of the younger-uns)
Ronin Warriors (Ha, like anyone can find a legit copy at a reasonable price! They need to reprint this.)
Saint Seiya
Sailor Moon
Yu-Yu Hakusho
Inu-Yasha
Rurouni Kenshin
Evangelion
Many things Gundam (I've seen Wing, which I liked and G, which I also sort-of liked, still working on the rest)
Robotech Protoculture collection (heh, okay, too much...)
Ghost in the Shell + SAC (SAC's gone Anime Legends, so it's cheap enough these days.)
Outlaw Star (as a few people have reminded)
Escaflowne
Ninja Scroll
Wolf's Rain
Witch Hunter Robin
Slayers
Most Miyazaki movies (Miyazaki's largely canon right? Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, etc.)
Akira
Princess Mononoke
Tenchi (debatably; not a huge fan, but it's popular and been done to death in several series, sequels and spin-offs, so I guess it qualifies, eh? Much like DB, DBZ, DBGT, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, etc.)
Naruto (debatably; the debate's been done to death on many forums, or so I hear. Listed sinec most people should have at least heard of it / know what it's all about, even if they despise it.)
Pokemon (would follow from the prior logic on Naruto, I guess? Maybe not something to go out of your way to screen for someone.)
Personally, I think Legend of Himiko and Twelve Kingdoms should make the list. Liked both. Good animation, decent storylines in both.
Sorry if a few of these were on the list already... OP said obvious / n00b / well-traveled stuff. As others have said, not all of these are maybe right for everyone. Just fairly popular. Might I repeat we should lobby to have Bandai reprint Ronin Warriors? ;) Well, I enjoyed it anyway. Hard to find good samurai / dark fantasy (well, okay maybe not; just reminiscing about the old school Toonami days).

i agree, if you are up for a gorey experience go with elfin lied.
-
i agree, if you are up for a gorey experience go with elfin lied.
I didnt read anything after this but- YOU WANNA GORY EXPERIENCE- Go watch AFRO SAMURAI....
Or DEAD SPACE- The anime movie.
-
i agree, if you are up for a gorey experience go with elfin lied.
I agree with this^

I am not sure how you are getting the shows you are watching. If you can get the new stuff, and want shows that are popular and likely to have cosplayers I would recommend:
K-ON
Kobato
Toradora
Vampire Knight
Pandora Hearts
Valkyrie Chronicles
Lucky Star
Dance in the Vampire Bund is also worth consideration depending on age
I am really surprised none of these were listed yet :o
Also InuYasha ~ Final Chapter is now airing, so there will be an increase in the popularity of that show this year. Ponyo also will most likely be popular. ;D
For a total noob I always start out with Ghibli films, especially Kiki's Delivery Service. I would then find the easiest to understand shows with comedy in them:
Azumanga Daioh
Love Hina
Ranma 1/2
Strongest Disciple KenIchi
Fruits Basket
Chobits
Witch Hunter Robin
Scrapped Princess
Great Teacher Onizuka
Cross Game
Oh, and for fans of Fushigi Yuugi try Saiunkoku Monogatari
There are hundreds more I can think of, but you don't have enough time before con to watch them all. ;D
-
I'd recommend Kimi ni Todoke, as it is anime, but it is a slice of life comedy/drama, which lends itself to an easier understanding of the work. It's ongoing, and very good, so accessibility should be a plus.
Another to view would be A Certain Scientific Railgun, it's ongoing, very good, a slice of life sci-fi comedy/drama, but it shows some of the heights that anime can reach.
-
i dont know about here but
strike witches

I'll second Kimi ni Todoke, I thought it had already been mentioned but I was wrong. Thanks Jaybug.
A Certain Scientific Railgun is good, but you may want to see Toaru Majutsu no Index first to get the full impact. I also think it is a little more advanced for a noob, but may have a cosplayer or two wanting to try out Misaka Mikoto.
Umm... Strike Witches ??? We are talking FEMALE noob here. This is a fanservice show full of panty shots. If that is what you are going for why not recommend Ladies versus Butlers, Rosario+Vampire, or Chu-Bra instead. ::)
-
Naw, just go for Eiken! lol No, don't srsly.
If they are over 18, should we recommend some hentai titles?
( you can call me Jay, but it does say JAYBUG on my car's license plate)
-
LOL Her? Hentai? On her own free will? Nope... xD
Though we'll see about getting her into the hentai viewing room at Kumoricon... bwahahahaha
-
O.O wow what did i do
well i said it cuz every on i know has seen it and i think it is funny that no one has pants in the whole show
also you forgot sora no otoshimono and Kanokon
never watch eiken i watch the first few minutes cuz my friend said it was funny but its not
now that all the ecchi is out no more
-
What about Zoids?
Who hasnt heard of this.
-
Wolfs Rain? I used to love that.
-
KEEP HER AWAY FROM THE YAOI!!! There's enough YAOI fangirls there; we don't need anymore. ;D
But no, seriously: Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Cowboy Bebop, Bleach, and Geobreeders (just because it'd be nice to talk to someone else who's seen that one :'().
-
as i have put this else whares yaoi is gawed. Kaze stigma is pretty dam good cute and actiony. Its great.
-
It's been a while, so what are the NEW must see's out there now?
-
Hana Saku Iroha It's really good. It's kind of like Howard's End, or Remains of the Day but in contemporary Japan and using high school age girls instead of Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. I think that is the best one of the season so far.
-
When I got my friend into anime I started with Noir (I know, weird right?), and then moved onto Fushigi Yuugi to give her a small look into the spectrum (she loved them both btw). I would also recommend Break Blade (but it's not finished) and Wallflower. Maybe even Howl's Moving Castle?
-
Who are we trying to get to watch anime this time?
-
Sailor Moon? Ranma 1/2? FLCL? VAMPIRE KNIGHT! <333
