Welcome to year 2010. This last year, we had 56 Yojimbo on staff. We need atleast this many if not more this coming year. I wont sugar coat the job. You will be up early and to bed late, sometimes you may not sleep or eat for long periods of time. But the rewards of seeing all those con goers having a great time is what we are all about. so please PM me the following information and I will add your information to the roster. Questions Welcome.
Duties include:
Morning Shifts: Registration lines, crowd control, peace bonding station, general assistance
Day shifts: Registration lines, Event Lines, crowd control, peace bonding station, general assistance

Done!
-
Psh, you have all my info! Only thing that should change is my age from 19 to 20.
Barring unexpected events i'll be there.
-
I'm seriously contemplating signing up this year for the first time. But I do have a question. I'll send a PM with the info and question. :)
-
Do Yojimbo have to wear special uniforms, or do they get to wear costumes like everyone else? If so how do you tell them apart from everyone else?
*Is contemplating signing up*
-
the last few years we have worn either a red haiori or a red sash tho this year we definitely did not have enough. not sure about next year as of yet but while on duty we do often wear something that can be easily recognized in a crowd.
-
Hmm okay.
One more question...
What exactly does a Yojimbo do, and what are the benefits of becoming one?
(yeah I sound like a newbie I know)
-
added my response to the original post
-
Sent my info to you.
Though there is a small chance something could pop up in the future and I would have to back out, but unless that happens (I would let someone know) consider me available to help out.
-
Sending my info now! Though I want to let you know that I want to also help the
maid squad (I'd prefer to wear a maid costume and fight Convention-Crime!)
Really, I just want to do as much as absoultely possible... I really wanna be supre
involved cause that just makes me excited even more for the con!
YAY!
~Allykat
-
I'm up for another year, you should have my info already.
When do we usually do this klite event me hears about?
-
kylite - we should all talk at one of the upcoming meetings about your shortage of yoji uniforms. I had no idea we didn't have enough, and I think it'd be fun to get a group together to have a little sewing party and make some more. I think the red haori is important, since it's become somewhat iconic at k-con. Most returning people know that when they need security, they should look for the red jacket! :)
We can also attempt to collect red fabric donations at upcoming meetings, too. I'm sure plenty of cosplayers have leftovers that they'd be willing to share. :)
I'll look for you at the first or second meeting and we can talk about this.
-
Do I really need to give you my info again?
-
I don't remember any tags, but were the haories linen per chance? That's what some of them felt like to me.
-
some were made of different material, not honestly sure what. or even how their made but we need more but well... the budget isn't exactly an easy thing to get into...
-
While the red haori's are cool, perhaps they may be... fiscally ineffective for ALL the yojimbo?
Perhaps they should be worn by Yojimbo-Team/Platoon Leaders? Then there underlings can wear
a red headband/Arm Band with a specific symbol/character/number on it designating them to that
Yojimbo leader. That was the red Band and Haori are universal, and the leaders of the Yojimbo are
distinct from the grunts/teams. Making Red Bands seems alot easier/cheaper then a bunch of Haori's.
But thats my 2 cents.
~Allykat

I agree.
-
*nods* it comes down to cost of materials, person to make said materials into the proper things, AND making sure what we wear is identifiable throughout the crowd without having to look too hard.
the red bands while nice are hard to spot and everyone wore them differently
the jackets are large and red and stand out, the only people we look like in the land of cosplay is inuyasha lol
still I am up for suggestions, donations, whatever works LOL
-
I've got a cosplay outfit I'm trying to finish, sad i couldn't get it done for this con, and after that I could see about making a single haori and multiply the materials/cost to make the amount needed for everyone working at one time to wear. The haori itself takes VARY LITTLE skill in sewing to make (single stitch ftw), and we could have a little get together to make them, but its not necessary. The cost for the fabric is probably somewhere around 7.50$ a yard. Each yard is about 54" x 36". I don't know exactly how much fabric they take, but I'm sure you can make 1 per yard if not 3 per 2 yards. Donations and cheaper/deals on fabric are all possibilities. Anyhow I still have to finish my cosplay and I'm not in a super hurry so not sure when I'll be looking into the haori.
-
well I cosplay as Kenshin, he also wears red (though a darker red than the Haori) but still.
EDIT: Can yojimbo wear the Haori over a cosplay? or do they need to wear normal clothes under it?
-
Mmm.. I was told we could cosplay, and we had others cosplaying there (not sure if they were all yoji or just other staff) but I don't believe you need to wear anything over your outfit. That would, after all, ruin the whole point of cosplaying :)
But no props are allowed on duty.
-
In that case, is there a safe place that yoji can leave their cosplay props/personal belongings while on duty? (say if they can't afford a hotel room) Cause I for one have a sword with my cosplay... and if it were to be stolen I would be royally pissed.
Also I want to clear up a rumor I heard. Yoji, as staff members, get into kumoricon for $10. is this true?

Staff pay $10, get reduced hotel rate, free T-shirt and Con Suite access.
-
Con suite??
*confused on what that is*
-
Con suite?????
*confused on what that is*
It has food and chill-out space. The runners who bring food to staff and volunteers bring it from con suite.
-
Well then sign me up!
Nvm, I already did sign up, lol.
One more question,
what do I do after signing up? Wait to be contacted?
-
Well, first there is a background check... and the current Yojimbo have to follow
you around for a month to decide if your heart is pure and your mind is free and
clear of all fear.
You will then be kidnapped at a random hour of the night and whisked away to
the "trials" where you will be grilled on your anime knowledge, your skills in the
martial arts and your ability to solve puzzles and riddles in a quick manner.
If you pass this test you will go before the great Yojimbo 1 and lay your life and
bokken at his feet. If you please him you are granted the title of Yojimbo...
if not...
Well, lets just hope you are!
(All joking of course, I think we just have to go to the meeting once they approve us
and start learning how to do what yojimbo do!)

I take Kendo.... does that count?
I certainly hope you're joking, lol. Good one, though. But I was wondering how long it would take to find out if I was approved, and when the meetings are.

We are now kind of a lame duck board. We can't sign people up for next year. We need to wait until after elections so we know who will be running Ops. Elections will be mid-October.
Right now lots of people are enthusiastic, but we can't do much until elections. Gomen. Whoever is appointed as Yoji 1 should be contacting people as soon as he is in place.
-
Alright!
-
Just attend a general meeting, meet up with the director of operations and one of the Yojimbo leaders.
I myself have been requested to sign up as Yojimbo 1 by many people so I will try for it. Wether I get that position or not is up to the new operations director
Regardless I am working on the new roster for 2010 if I can stop flaling asleep after work. (convention jet lag) LOL
-
Ah okay. Well just let me know when the meeting is.. and if I was accepted or whatnot... that would be good. I don't want to waste a trip if I am not approved as a yoji member.
-
Augh that was a huge msg to Yoji 2 soon and hopefully to be Yoji 1. Well sent my info in. I think i may be over qualified. lol
-
I will tell ya now, we rarely EVER turn anyone away from being yoji unless you were in years past and simply didnt perform ur duties and such.
Just show up at a general meeting, I will be at every one of them if I can, and we will get u set up and trained. :)
-
Ah okay. Well just let me know when the meeting is.. and if I was accepted or whatnot... that would be good. I don't want to waste a trip if I am not approved as a yoji member.
We do really appriciate people attending the earlier meetings and, if possible, more than one. The more Yoji we have who are more well trained, the better off the whole con is.
-
Okay. So how do I know when and where the meetings are at? *hopefully they are on fridays.... cause that makes transport easier*
-
Okay. So how do I know when and where the meetings are at? *hopefully they are on fridays.... cause that makes transport easier*
One of the first tasks of the new Board will be to set all the meeting times. Once they are set, they will be put into the calender on the front page of the website.
-
Kay.
-
The meetings are always on Saturday or Sunday (at least from the past four years I have been staffing) and you'll know by watching the website for the announcement about them. Hopefully we'll have it a lot like we did last year so the dates are set in advance so it is easier for people to get time off.
Also to answer a previous question: yes yoji can leave stuff in the yoji office (I do all the time) while they are on duty.
And to reanswer another question: yoji do have to wear either the sash or haori while on duty as well, whether cosplaying or not.
-
oooh... saturday might not be good for me, but I can try for sunday meetings.
@ the leaving stuff in yoji office/haori statement - Thank you for clearing that up. ^^
-
Just out of curiosity, where do you hold the meetings? what town?
-
Thats part of the things to be decided when they set the meetings but I would assume it would be the same as last year, in the hotel itself.
-

That would be convenient... as I already know how to get there.
-
Not all meetings are in the hotel due to the higher cost of using that space. Most meetings are somewhere in Portland. We also try to have one in Eugene, a couple in Salem, and maybe some in Vancouver, WA.

That would be of soooo much use if there was one in Eugene. <3 At least for me. haha.
But really, I can make it to anywhere if I need to.
-
The haoris are all cotton, but some of them are better quality cotton than others. I say hold off on any of this until the new Operations Director takes office, then we can request a budget for materials to make more. We do indeed need more though.

That actually sounds like a fun way to meet the new yoji's, maybe we should do something.......
And to reanswer another question: yoji do have to wear either the sash or haori while on duty as well, whether cosplaying or not.
Well at least a sash is easily incorporated into most costumes, not totally ruining it. Though in cosplay I doubt anyone would realize you are staff at first.
-
Thats why the Red Band would need to have some kind of symbol/word/number on it
To discern it from regular ones or generic samurai ones....
~Allykat
Not to mention most of the Yojimbo were carrying flashlights and tools or clipboards
along with their haori/sash
-
I did not see any this year but are Yojimbo allowed to cosplay???
-
I did not see any this year but are Yojimbo allowed to cosplay???
I'm not an official source on this one but I think there is nothing against doing it as long as it does not stop you from doing your duties (like a gigantic prop or soemthing) as I saw Kylite as Walter from Hellsing a few years ago, and I think I saw a Black Mage in 2008
-
As already stated in this thread IF YOU READ IT, yes we can cosplay, but no props and you still wear a sash.
-
ok...I gots a more specific question.
I was Human Inuyasha this year (nobody uploaded pics of me T_T) and I was mistaken as a yoji a few times. If I were to get the Yoji symbol on it (like the regular jackets), could I use that?->if my gf doesn't kill me
Wouldn't need to make a new one for me. I am thinking about redoing the top so I can have pockets anyway :)
-
As already stated in this thread IF YOU READ IT, yes we can cosplay, but no props and you still wear a sash.
Ok thx. and by no props you mean like no big props or non at all???
-
I'm not a yojimbo, yet, so I don't know but... I imagine the point is your hands need to be free at all times,
also I doubt while on duty you should be doing many photo ops so almost all, if any, props should be not
allowed because they will hinder you from running after or making sure people are safe. Anything besides
neccessary tools of the trade are probably going to be more of a burden then a help.
~Allykat
-

No carrying props while on duty. When not on duty, the only thing you have to worry about in regards to that is the con prop policy.
-

I doubt anyone would make you put the festival symbol on it. They might ask you to wear a sash, which you can tie anywhere, (I wrapped one around my hand :/ ) or not bother wear one at all. Big red outfit with a well visible staff badge is pretty good.
-
i did not see any cosplaying yojimbo this year or i dont think i did but the sash would not mess up a cosplay unless you have to have every thing perfect
-
we had a santa, a snow trooper, and a few other cosplays. but for the most part when doing yoji stuff it pays to travel light unless your on graveyard patrol
-
Just curious: Was there much confusion between red armbands = yoji and red armbands = Haruhi fans? I'd think there would be some, but I didn't notice enough of either to get an impression.
-
not really no.
-
EWWW we got downgraded from Security to Customer Service. /cry
(Its a downgrade because security does light CS and more already)
-
Haha, yep, I always cosplay. I wore 3 different costumes this con, but I end up not wearing a sash/haori because I was in the office most of the time unless needed elsewhere :P
Think I am going to make my own sash for next year if I decide to staff again (which I am sure I will).
-
Trying on different titles till I find one no one will dislike LOL. how about the QA department (quality assurance)
-
Although it's not neccessarily a good "title" I like the basic idea of what yojimbo actually
stands for; "Hand for Hire" or "Task Force"
Yeah... Task Force sounds really cool... we are THE Task Force... lol!
~Allykat
-
that is a great title
-
Sign me up.
-
LOL "Task Force"
Not bad, but probably not the kind of heading he wants.
-
It might be a good idea to change the name of the thread back... it gets abbreviated in the main window (http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/) as "Yojimbo (Quality @55."
While that may be true, it's probably not a great idea to advertise it that way. (^_~)
ps: Link added (http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/)
-
Where does it get abbreviated like such? I don't see it like that anywhere.
-
He's talking in the "Last post..." part on the main forum page.
-
Yes we're allowed to cosplay, but no prop weapons; face masks; or face paint obscuring your entire face while on duty. I had my Princess Daisy cosplay on this year.
-
we had a santa, a snow trooper, and a few other cosplays. but for the most part when doing yoji stuff it pays to travel light unless your on graveyard patrol
Ok thx Kylite
-
Alright, I've already tentatively signed up, but I guess... I'm looking for a little advice/reassurance? I'm planning on purchasing a table in the Artists' Alley, but I figure it'll take two people to man it anyway and it only comes with one guest pass. Hence, volunteering - partially for the discounted admission, admittedly, but also because I want to get involved.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else has tried something similar before? Will I probably end up spending the entire con either on duty as a yoji or manning the art table? Or is it possible to squeeze some playtime in there, too?
-
If you have your own table in AA then you will be there most the time. If you were just helping someone with a table in AA using a get in kcon free card you will still probably be helping to man your table and help with sales most the time. If you were just going as yoji, depending on how dedicated you are, you will still get to see some stuff. Though you might also get to walk around and talk to people while your working, roaming ftw. Just make sure your not a total social butterfly and you are doing the job you signed up to do WHILE ON DUTY. I don't actually remember seeing roaming yoji (though I saw some stationary) down in dealers hall, so if you think you could just watch over AA, that might not be doable depending on how the new operations director wants things to go next year. Did that answer your question?
-
Okay, so it really sounds like you can only do yoji or AA. Which is fine with me, I'll just have to uh. Cancel my sign-up... ness.
But you also mentioned something that sounded as though you can actually get two people in if you buy a table. Like, the person who signs up for it gets in, and then the pass that comes with it is for an extra second person. If that's true, then it's a load off my mind because I've got another person who wants to help me but might not be able to make it, and this way I won't have to depend on her coming.
-
ok so i fell dumb but when and how do we become yoji do we get a pm after we pm kylite(i did) and what meetings do we go to????
-
the next meeting after elections there will be staff forms, fill one out, get a signature from the operations director, and pay the $10 and ur set then make sure toattend a training or 2
-
thank you kylite this is my first year going for staff so i was lost also you know what day it will be
-
No date for the first meeting after elections has been set. You will need to look periodically at the calender to find that out.
-
I do believe that staffers made them. I can't exactly say what will happen this year, as of yet, but I do have a ridiculous amount of cloth sitting in my closet that can be used for similar en devours.
-
I don't know if I'm allowed to sign up for staff because I'll be 15 during the convention :-[ (gah! why couldn'tI have been born a few months earlier??) but I'm going to try anyways :P if I can't be staff, can I still voulnteer? I REALLY want to be apart of the convention this year instead of just an antendee.
-
i don't want to sound mean but read the first post it says 16+ so i don't think so, and to me that's to young. if it was 18+ it would be better because we wont have a 21 year old drunk hitting a 16 year old kid which i don't think that would happen do to kumoricon being so peaceful.
-
I wish I could give an official answer but since elections have not happened yet, the rules are subject to change. I would present you rquetion to the new ops director once they have been elected
-
So, quick question. Is this a volunteer position, or an actual job? If so, I'm curious as to how much the salary is. Sorry, I love the k-con, and would love to be part of the inner-workings, bu I would need to know how worth it it is.
-
Every Kumoricon staff position is volunteer (yes, even the directors).
-
Every Kumoricon staff position is volunteer (yes, even the directors).
But if you don't treat it like a job (although fun one, mostly..) you might think twice. Its a serious event with real people counting on us un-payed volunteers to keep them happy or face doom >.<"
-
your pay is the knowing you make k-con safe and i think you get in for less but i dont remember
-
Thats correct; the volunteer-staff get many perks such as:
Nifty Staff Badges!
Discounted Admission to the Con!
Discounted Room Rates @ Con Hotel!
Access to "K-Employee" Only Areas!
The Joy of Knowing you put on a great Con!
And soooo muuuuch moooore!
~Allykat
-
thats more stuff then i thought
employee only stuff i wounder what it is
-
Its been awhile since i posted on here, but after reading the past few entries it seems everyone wants the rewards of working instead of working to give others (the con-goers) a rewarding experience. When i started assisting this year on ( i think ) Saturday, i did it to help improve the con and make it more fun for others, i was not looking for the rewards given to employees.
True leaders find reward in the job itself.
-
*smiles* someone who understands me
-
i want to be yojimbo to keep the con safe if there was no rewards i would still do it
im not going to care about half of them do to me not staying at the hotel
and on day zero this year i offerd to help reg staff but they said no then later on asked for help so i did
-
*smiles* someone who understands me
LOL
that sure was a long meeting yesterday, but at least i got to learn about peoples backgrounds and what goes into a con.
Pyro
-
Me Also! Me Also!
I met awesome fun-time peoples who want to be involved in lots of
fun time things! And I'm super pumped to help Ops and Relations this
year with anything they need! K-Con is going to be AAAAA-may-ZING!
Now that the general's are appointed, the wait begins for meeting TWO,
and the adventure known as; "Who will be staff for this year!?!?" I'm
sure it'll be a good turn out! I just know it!
~Allykat
As a Side Note: Apparently waking up after a full 6 hours of sleep makes me
an incredibly chipper person in the morning... who knew?

6 Hrs, thats a normal night for me. Wish i could have more.
-
6 Hrs, thats a normal night for me. Wish i could have more.
Luckeeeee... I am greatful for 3 hours of real sleep! curse my need to do everything and
not go to bed until it is done!
~Allykat
-
Sleep is for the dreamers, you are more of a do'er so I think the time each gets fits ^.^
-
I feel like that kind of scenario would make an excellent sitcom... one person sleeping all the time,
the other is constantly vaccuming or constructing furniture at 2:00am....
Oh the hilarity!
~Allykat
-
Back to Yojimbo I vote kylite for Yoji 1
-
I would gladly take the Mantle of Yojimbo 1 if it is offered to me.
That said, I am also happy to see others try it on as I have.
Either way I am Yojimbo Through and Through
-
ok time for new Qs that need As
im part of a panel and well how do i do both
do i get time to do it and go back to yoji work
-
Basically you get to sign up for a shift bock of hours to work, then u get off time, if your panel is during the off time then its fine.
-
It would be nice to see this so called block time for each person, as it didn't really exist this year to my knowledge.
-
thays because every time someone came in to go OFF SHIFT they would hear a clal on the radio for help and go running off back into the job LOL. Yojimbo often forget to take time off.....
-
ok sounds good block times for the win
-
I will now be locking this topic. For more information regarding Yojimbo, please check out the ops thread here: http://www.kumoricon.org/forums/index.php?topic=11774.0
Looking forward to seeing you all at a general meeting soon =D
