Post by: reyn_grey on May 17, 2005, 12:41:03 pm
Hi! I was wondering if the Eugene people are still meeting at U of O?

I would like to get involved but seem to be missing everyone. Help!

Weekly meetings at the U of O occur on Thursdays at 6:30pm in the Fishbowl at the EMU.

Newbies are required to buy pizza for the entire group, subject themselves to extreme verbal abuse, and be our slaves in general.

Okay, maybe not, but a guy can dream, right?

bah, thursday is one of two days of the week that I have school.  Well, I may attempt to drag myself down there after a short nap :)  Unless you all are meeting during the summer, then I'll just wait untill LCC lets out and I don't have to worry about my school/work schedual anymore... just work... almost like a vacation :)

hm, good question.

this year's con chair lives in eugene, as did this year's director of ops. next year's director of ops lives in eugene, but next year's con chair lives close to portland. i personally work til midnight on thursdays, so i've been out of that loop, but it is important to find out if those meetings are happening, and if so, when and where!

separately, i received an email that indicated that this year there probably would not be a tunac group, the totally unnamed       club of u of o that preceded the founding of kumoricon and alto nimbus, the con's sponsor. however, a really nice guy (and prize-winning fanfic author!), "wuntvor," is going to host       viewings one night a week at his home, if that is also to your interest.....

that would be cool!!!

I would like to get into the anime crowd more, I kinda missed out this summer helping with Kumoricon since I lived so far out from everything and I had car trouble-but now I live in civilization again (and the car got fixed, LOL go figure)

I would also like to get involved with Kumoricon 06-but I'm not sure how or where to start. :)

I'm at this point taking times that people would be available for weekly meetings.

please, only post times if you can or will try to make it.

There is a similar thread in the general staff forums if you have access.

At emerald we mostly watch fan subs of current series playing in Japan, generally stuff that is not yet on the American market like home burns and the iffy disk from Hong Kong.  Once in a while something like a movie, last meeting I was at we watched FF: Adverent Children, and we have watched some Mizaki films and some Kurosawa samurai films

At emerald we used to watch a series 3 or 4 eps a meeting beginning to end but lately shorter series and movies because no one has been attending for long except me and 2 other old guys.

just at thought, maybe they should have a survey on the wall and at the counter at the story, inquiring if there were folks who would come if it were on a different night! or on a weekend day!

The guy at Emerald  does ask peaple what they would want to see but for legal reasona it mostly limeted to stuff that does not yet have a US distributar.  It's been friday forever and at one time there were 10 or 15 peaple showing up often the same ones who went to Tunic.

I was just there and saw what they're showing; they say it's an anime called "Pantasia."  I saw the manga of it in Japan and part of the anime earlier at the store.  It's pretty funny, I recommend it ^_^.  It's about a bakery and I guess they sign up for some competition to promote their store.  I also think in Japan they call it "Ja Pan."  (The play on words is "pan" means bread in Japanese)

It's mostly funny-ridiculous, very addicting somehow, and, if you can do it during the showing, easy to play Mystery Space Science Theather with it.  Example: Anime: "Wow, they say he rarely comes out in front of the media like this."  Me: "Yeah, I think there's a reason why." (don't want to spoil it for people)

well personally i think it's a lovely and clever poster.

here is an important question. i think one of the reasons i never went to the emerald group was it was just a teeny tv posted high up on the ceiling and with my nearsightedness i thought i might be unable to read subtitles.

is it still a small tv? is it still on the ceiling? sub or dub?

At the Emerald City Anime Club it's now a slightly larger tv.  The Tv has been moved to the top of the turnaround that has all the white worm products a little lower and closer to the chairs.  We see mostly Fansub and stuff not on the US market yet cause if it was they would want to rent it to you.  I go just because i'm there a lot anyways and there are few other members over 30 so we get in a half hour of nerd talk before the show.    And if the Ergh Pirates need Pirate gear I make Pirate Boots, Pirate vest, Pirate hats and Pirate sword belts

Just a note to Bump the topic

The next meeting of the Eugene Anime Society is on Friday Nov 25th 7:00

The show should be episode 4,5,6 of "Pantasia." AKA "Ja Pan” subbed

It’s listed as 7:00 but the clock is broken and about 20 min off so the show really starts at 7:15 to about 8:45.   Come early about 6:45 for that half hour of geek talk before the show as they close about 3 min after it's over.

This week there is no cover charge for nerdy girls with glasses. AND any nerdy girl with glasses who brings a single nerdy woman with glasses gets a free lifetime membership to the club.

We might want to call to double check if he has changed the schedule; I just realized it's sort of a Holladay week

See Club Poster for address and phone number

Eugene Anime Society Report

This weeks meeting was just grand, fantastic, "Ja pan" had been rented so the show was up to a vote after the members scroured the shelves.  I was the only member who showed up, I even left work early to get there in time for geek talk and chili dogs.  So me the comic store guy and Chuckago (from peanut ball Z to your left) were the only ones there.  We waited untill 7:30 then called it off then me and chuck went for ice cream.

eek, all my fault, *kicks self* well, hm, at least there was ice cream. fact of the matter is i shoulda rearranged my day to be able to go.....friday nights are really hard for me....i work 2 jobs on thursdays, typically 14 hours, ending around midnight. then i work again at 6:30 in the morning fridays, til 4, then have to run to the bank......by the time i get home around 5 or 6 after errands, i'm exhausted

i really want to see the bakery anime though

The way the club goes if there are not 3 or more members (and my kit bashed action figure did not count) who show up he cancels the show.  Looks like the Japan bakery anime is for rent (I'm the last to know) at one time he only showed stuff that was not for rent yet.   Chili Dogs and Ice cream are not realy part of the club, the building is between 7-11 and Dairy Queen so I have access to the most healthy snacks

and I can also make templar belts, templar scabbarrds, and when i replace my cloth sewing machine templar surcoats

Please do not bump topics just to "bump the topic."  It's been established that this is looked down upon, and we can't really say "don't bump one, but it's okay to bump the other," so we kinda hafta be fair on it, hence why I'm asking for no more "just because" bumps.

Reminders will be treated the same way as bumps. Please note that this thread has been at the top of the list since it was revived on October 25th.

Unless you have some sort of news, there isn't any reason to "bump" or "remind" us. And when providing updates please take into consideration the interest of others as indicated by the responses of others. If no one is interested, bumping is not going to generate that interest. Rather, it could drive people away who become annoyed at seeing you flog the event.

Not that we don't want your event to be successful, but there's a point where people go from appreciating the information to resenting it.

That sucks man. I really wish we had a larger community on these boards that we could mobilize, I do. Maybe some of our people can give you some pointers to help you breathe new life into the event. Do you know Zac?
Title: Eugene Group
Post by: Vondan on December 12, 2005, 10:41:02 pm
I don’t know if I have met Zac, I think a Zac was at one meeting in the last year.   I’m actually not in charge of anything at this club, that would be the comic store guy Stew. I’m just another member who started going about 4 years ago.  Then we had up to 10 or 15 people at a meeting, often the same kids from TUNAC.  I went to TUNAC a few times but I had work and school conflicts with that day, now I hear they are no longer on campus.  That could be part of the problem, the hard core Anime group graduated the U of O and Kumoricon moved to Portland so no more Anchor events in Eugene for anime that I know of (well there was some sort of Sailor Moon all night pajama party at one of the High Schools last year but unless they were going to invite there nerdy single aunts it did not sound like my thing).  For the last year it seemed to be either random HS kids or a few other ancient anime fans (over 30) like me.

Another reason this concerns me is that the Owner of ECC is not into anime, if any one had noticed that is why the staff was made to take down all the Anime posters and put up comic super hero posters.  I feel they may have a shift in there stores focus.

I would almost be willing to have something at my store as I already have War Games and RPG games with gown ups, but my shop is a mess right now, there are dangerous things like golf bags of swords and flammable liquids and when I get the sewing room finished I would never be able to get the cosplay girls to leave.

What Eugene needs is for all the clubs to cross promote and form into one united anime union with a good location and a pan geek convention or Nerdfest
Title: Eugene Group
Post by: BigGuy on December 14, 2005, 11:26:07 am
I was running TUNAC for a while and we only had like 5 regular people coming, and I wasn't able to do it anymore and noone else wanted to step up and do it so TUNAC kinda just died out after last year. I think that with cheap ebay dvds, places like ECC and people having their own hi-speed internet anime groups are going to be getting smaller and harder to find, which is sad.

Sorry to resurrect this topic but it was of personal interest :)

I started the club in 1991, at the time we had roughly monthly meetings at the McDonalds on River Road - you see, they had a side room that could be closed off from the rest of the restaurant, and it had a projection TV they used for sporting events, and while a little amused that we were using it for "cartoons", they had no problem with letting us use the room once in a while provided people coming bought food.

Buying food had been a significant concern; we originally tried holding meetings at pizza places but we hadn't counted on the cheap factor of fanboys, and after a couple of meetings where the management was like, great, you brought a whole lot of people into our restaurant, only two of them bought pizza and some of them brought their own food... we abandoned that.

Even the cheapest of fanboys could afford McDonalds.

I have some early club newsletters that I'm never letting see the light of day again, some things one does when one is 18 should be buried under very heavy rocks.

It was a good time to be a fan, anime had almost zero profile in the US so there was a real sense of evangelism and everything was new - just getting new anime to show was very much a team effort; people would bring in things and we'd tag them on to the end of the viewing schedule or just replace shows we'd planned.

It seemed quite natural at the time but somewhat surreal looking back to have 20 or so grown adults clustered in a McDonalds watching untranslated episodes of Miracle Girls and Ranma.  :)

We did have some university students attend, but the club itself was never associated with the U of O since none of the officers were students.

I left Eugene for Los Angeles in early 1995 and handed over the reins to someone who handed them on to someone who... and eventually it wound up in the hands of the Emerald City Comics guy, I want to say his name was Stu but honestly telling the staff there apart is a bit tricky.

I was concerned at the time that it was too closely attached to a commercial venue, but it sounds like they kept it alive for a very long time, so I'm glad it wound up under their care.

Yeah Stu the comic store guy (denies being the basis for the guy on th simpsons yet the creator has lived in eugene)  took over after McDonalds, he told me most of what you said including the buying food problem with the pizza place. In the last few years it was hard to get more then 3 or 4 people. We assume it was because of all the anime available now, he mostly stuck to stuff not yet on the US market, but any one with DSL could find that at home now. I had a vague idea of having something at my shop after I remodel, I already have D&D and board games. Although I’d want to reup my insurance first with the combination of Anime fans and things like machines and swords at my shop.

And I dont have any thing to eat at my shop except leather, but after I bring down a stove to work on Wax hardeneing I can make baked leather for every one to eat

Labor day weekend is always a touch tricky for me, but I'm planning to try to make it to at least one day of this year's convention - I haven't been before and it seems silly since it's less than a half hour away.  :)

Stu was a good guy and did a lot for fans in Eugene - the first anime I saw that wasn't americanized TV shows was untranslated poor quality bootleg tapes rented from Emerald City (obligatory AND WE LIKED IT! comment goes here), and his evangelizing meant that we could almost always get our hands on the legit releases to rent, when those started coming out in greater numbers.

I think you're 100% right in your reasoning - anime is EASY to get now and tracking down fansubs is hardly any work at all when you consider websites like animesuki and the explosion of high speed connections at home.

I do wonder about the future of anime clubs as a concept in the US - when the fandom was just getting off the ground, the universal mission statement of "get the message out!" was enough to hold groups together, but nowadays anime is such a part of the popular culture, that simply isn't enough any more.

I would love to be part of a club that focused on collaberative creative activities.  (I'm going to assume I spelled "collaberative" wrong there, it's awful late) - something along the lines of the "circle" that seems to be the base unit for japanese fans.

I think that model leads to more sustainable organizations, if everyone is actually working to produce something (craft a doujinshi / put on a convention / do costuming / language & cultural learning / etc), though that leaves the evangelizing and recruiting up to (a) TV, media organizations and the like and (b) individual fans sucking their hapless friends into the hobby :)

I went to Winter Comic Market for the first time this last year and it was a mindblowing experience; half a million people going to a convention with ten huge exhibition halls full of fan produced works (and admittedly one hall that had companies pitching their stuff)

The barriers to entry for anything like that happening in the US are astronomical; to be sure - domestic fans seem to congregate around cosplay and fanfic, and an awful lot of the fan works at Comic Market range from questionable to downright adult in content and US rights holders are less likely to turn a blind eye to that sort of thing...

I might actually reach some conclusion here but it's way too late to follow up this unfocused rambling with anything like that.  And I think I've already sunken too far into old geezer the-way-things-ought-to-be rambling and I'll probably feel quite sheepish to read this in the morning.

i agree, groups that lack an active project focus just really don't seem to hold sway anymore. i think it's a major generational issue, folks who are growing up with the ability to get whatever music or audio or video they want without leaving their bedrooms are becoming atomized and having more contact with folks online than off. it's not that online communities aren't communities, but i'm definitely in preference of knowing people in person and collaborating in person.

I swear I have only worn them maybe 5 times in 20 years, they are ugly green wool army socks only good for winter camping.    I'd tell them
I was into Military history so they gave me army socks and camo t shirts for x mas instead of Sun Tzu Art of war.

Yeah whats that

Yeah and a lot of the nerds over 30 have been attacked by Darth Real life and fall away from the true path of geekdem.  Unless they are wackadoodles.

Okay, let's try to stay on track, guys.  Some of this thread is related to the original topic, but a lot of it isn't even close... if we need to continue certain portions of the conversation, make a new thread for it or continue it by PM.

Yes we need to stick to the topic of the Eugene Group

With TUNAC gone and Kumoricon moved to Portland who is left in Eugene as a group to support anime and related hobbies? Who is sponsoring the events at the U of O this weekend?

If there is not enough support for an anime event every month can’t several genres of fandom join for an event.  The comic show in town is more business than fun, the star trek con has not came thorough in years, the RPG and table top games are spread over several stores with random schedules, when do I get to wear my Han solo outfit again, ware do the aunts dressed like Moaning Myrtle hang out

Nerds of the world Unite, you have nothing to loose but…

How popular would a meeting be with Epic anime and Samurai movies?  If I were hosting the plate would be full of Miyazaki and Kurosawa  and costumes of course.

but of course when the kids were first formulating plans for K01.  I did encourage them by saying y"eah go fo it Eugene needs a big Geek outlet at least once a year.  You dont want to be my age and wait at home for the star trek con to come by once a decade"

Tacked on from a post in the general area, posted kindly by CardCaptorConnor-EX

Wazzup,
I thought I'd be fun to mkae a guide for all you Oregon anime fans (after all, most of you are Oregonians). If you have one not on my list, fell free to let me know and I'll add it.

I have been too:
CD/GAME EXCHANGE: Hillsboro, OR. Small selection, but good if you want a bargain. Anime Only.
LA VIDEO: Aloha, OR. Basically same description as I gave CD/GAME. Anime Only.
KINOKUYA/UWAJAMIYA: Beaverton, OR. Kinokuya is a Japanese import book/video store, also have domestic products. Uwajamiya is a Japanee food store. POCKY!!!
BARNES & NOBLES/BORDERS: Various Locations. Lots of manga in B&N. Borders has anime & manga.
POWELLS BOOKS: Various, best is in Portland, OR. LOts of new & used manga, very affordable.

I haven't been to:
THINGS FROM ANOTHER WORLD: Beaverton, OR. Anime and Manga, items can also be bought online.

And there is always the KUMORICON DEALER'S ROOM. Open during con!

I knw there are is a Japanese video store in Baverton, but I can't remember its name.

There is a Things From Another World in Beaverton? There's another in Milwaukee, and that's the only one I know of.

The best place to rent Anime is Excalibur Comics on Hawthorne in Portland. They have the largest rental anime collection in the state. Maybe the country, but I can't remember specifically what they claimed. Anyway, it's a huge amount of anime, and all of it for rent! There used to be a good place in Vancouver, WA with rental anime and Sanrio toys and bubble tea, but they disappeared - I don't know if they moved or went out of business :(

I actually did a lot of the comic book store footwork for Publicity last year so I've got a big ol' list around here somewhere if you're looking for comic book stores.

the creation station is a kumoricon original. it started as the beta station at kc 2004, which was a room dedicated all con to working on fanfic and fan improv theatre, an idea born of the kumoricon_fanfiction yahoo group, of which i am a moderator and to which everyone is invited to join. at sakuracon 2005 the concept was expanded by me and melissa bernoudy (now magnan) and valeska mccartney into including fan art, in a room called the artists' den. this merging of fan art and fanfiction into a dedicated room continued with the fan creation station kc 2005 and the creation station sakuracon 2006.

i have a friend who lives next door to ye old dungeon for when there is stuff that needs to go there.

not much there, a couple computers and some comics and some gaming supplies. it's small and keeps odd hours. but it's very quaint and wise to have on the list.

perhaps there are gaming clubs in dorms and non-university group housing at u-o?

If Creswell isn't close enough, too bad.

I will host an anime party/showing this Sunday at 7pm, unless no one comes. It would be nice to be able to guess at how much food to cook however. So if you can come, pick up vondan in Eugene, then come on down.

895-5095, leave message, I work evenings, except Sunday's and Monday's.

jaybug39@yahoo.com if you want to email me.

Don't know when I have a day off for the next two weeks, but I would like to try to get something going for an anime thing down here.

Perhaps we could do a road trip and drop Kumoricon flyers at shops in Southern Oregon?

Something, or do we just isolate around here?

Hey there!
Street Team has a list of at lease some of the comic shops out there. I am rather new to Oregon so I am not even sure where all of these places are, but I thought I'd post the list and see if any of them are near where you might want to do a road trip. I gotta say, it has been great for me to see what kind of variety is out there and who is selling what!

WARNING! I cannot say for sure that all of these places are still around - you can check out http://the-master-list.com/ (online list of comic shops) to see if they have phone nubers / more info!!!

Lookin' messed up, that's how it's lookin'. My next day off is the 9th of July. I'll know more about what days off in fututre later. hopefully sooner. But I will be having Friday's and Saturday's off after that. seniority happens!

First we need the posters. Then go up to P-town and pick them up. Then have a nice long drive. Probably need to do this a couple of times.
Bend is about one day, unless you hook Klamath Falls into the route. Another trip is the coast run, Coos Bay, North Bend, Brookings. If you started early enough, you may be able to hit Medford, Ashland, and Grants Pass on the way bacl to Eugene. That is one mo-fo of a drive. About 10 hours or better.

So no playing in the ocean!

But if this is ok, let's do it!

Mailing the posters, wouldn't it be more effective to mail them to the stores? But, actually, I would like a drive to the Portland area too. Pick up my Ghost in the Shell SAC up from my dad. Save the money for other things, like making more posters/flyers.

Good grief, does this mean I have to buy goggles and drive around the state delivering posters/flyers? They don't go with Hawaiian shirts well, you know!

Showing? What? You bring your own anime. I was going to provide for basic sustenance.

Now that I know I will have Fridays and Saturdays off, maybe I will try to have people over for anime/party soon.

We get a better response and a better relationship if we give 'em facetime. (otherwise they might just toss it in the trash w/o opening it or think it is some kind of mail-spam, ie junk mail). But yeah, if you are interested in coming ot Portland regardless, that's great! As you say, get's you out of the house right

Yo Antares! Can you work up something that I can use in answering questions? Because I can think of nothing better than to point them to this forum. It's where I have gotten all info I know about K-con, which is proabaly not enough.

Guspacho wrote in the street team post. Antares, I have 5000 more flyers, but the posters have to be recreated, as the file was CORRUPT. Ugh, bad luck. I'll do my best to get them in tonight, but it may not print until after the holiday.

Oh yea, wonder if we are gonna make this road trip before the con or what. You call those flyers, look more like coasters to me.

Those "coasters" are the only advertisment that I saw for K-Con the first year I went (2004). Now I'm chair. Never underestimate the power of the 4X4 flyer.

We won't have the posters until Thursday now. But they are uploaded, in the proper format, and paid for, so this is a guarantee.

You guys can stop by my place for flyers this weekend, if you like. PM me.

Ok, here's what I can do geographically; a Bend route with 4 stops, a Medford route with 6 stops, and a Coos Bay route with 3 stops. Yes, this will take 3 different days to do this.

I will get flyers/coasters/posters, this Sunday. I have Monday off, and the following Friday and Saturday. So if someone wants to go with me, this is what is. And I mean the usual definition of the word is.

WAHOO!! Road trips!!!

Will there be any time to see anything?

Send me ideas of additional places to leave flyers/posters.

Looks good! I won't be able to join you but I did want to say that, with only two months (arg!) before the con, it is really important to check with the owner / manager of places you stop and see if they are at all interested having a vendor table (if they would like, someone from the con can give them a call). At least get a business card with their contact info on it. Grab some extra fliers so that you can leave enough to get them through to the end of August. Thanks!

I have new days off now, Fridays and Saturdays, so that won't be the same problem as before for everyone.
