Post by: xcthulhux on August 17, 2009, 12:12:55 pm
I have been trying to start an oregon Pokemon Video game league for a long time, but i have a lack of enthusiasm among participants.

oh freaking hells yeah!

Oh Griff, we can get people to drive us down there, not like weekly or anything, but monthly maybe.
btw I live around where Griff lives, in case you didn't figure that out.

awesome.
looks like we already have a decent group, as i know 4 or so other people that would want to do this.
now would you want to do it like the card league where we have places where people go to earn badges, and have tournaments weekly and such, or would you want to have 8 gym leaders, 4 elite four members, and a champion like the video game leagues?

I like the 8 gym leader thing, considering the two of us live 3 hours away, that is assuming you live near/in portland.

I'll see where I am in October, money-wise.  I'm going to start looking for a second band to join; preferably one that will have some shows BEFORE I become busy again. :P  Need to make some money; also need to NOT have a job, because those are too restrictive and not conducive to my career development.

ANYWAY.  I still really want to get into Mario Kart DS, and will certainly be dropping another $25-$30 for whatever DS pokemon game I can find first when I do.  Pokemon pretty much isn't awesome unless you're hanging out with friends to play, so I'd definitely be down for this ****.  I can bike pretty much anywhere inside the Portland Metro Area once or twice a week.  If I can get a ride, I can go pretty much anywhere any time I don't have class or practice with my band(s).

I'd be willing to host a netbattle server so everyone here can play pokemon for free. That way people wouldn't have to commute.

Alright.  I have some unresolved debts that are unfortunately pushing it back, otherwise that would be coming along early September. :<

If I could trade the possibility of ever being rich with the guarantee that I would never be poor, I think I'd take that. :P

so guise.
because i am made of awesome, i will be more than happy to write up the rules/regulations, but we are most likely going to have to have a meeting to discuss them.
so.
what time would be best for everyone else, because i generally have a pretty open schedule.
also, where would we meet, what would we need to bring, etc.

that sounds awesome, but there should be limits to what people can use (pokemon wise) and who would be the 8 gym leaders and the elite 4?
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League

if I could, i'd wanna be in the elite 4 or at least the final gym leader :3

I know what you mean, I have been dealing with lvling my pokemon lately, and have a majority of them up to around 60, but will still need to finish... At least I have all my favorites... But like I said, there need's to be some rules to fallow, like weather or not to allow legendary's or not, if there's a lvl cap per gym battle, stuff like that... But if that's the case, I need to work on getting my pokemon up to max.

My Empoleon [Roxas] is at 100, he's the only one up that high, everyone else is 1-76

nice, I have a nice group of pokemon myself, but like I said, I need to know if legendarys are allowed or not.

So are we do battles over Wi-Fi with this?
I can join I just need to know are you using the rules you posted here, Gamestop rules(I'm still using them because I won PBR following them)or VGC rules?

I'd be willing to host a netbattle server so everyone here can play pokemon for free. That way people wouldn't have to commute.

that would be a good idea actually, that way, we could do this while at home so that way we don't have to worry about finding a place, as for a meeting, right now, I am pretty much stranded until Kumoricon when I'll be getting a ride down there... But otherwise, it's going to be hard at this moment until my car get's fixed.

I can't do it over Wi-Fi since I've got no Wi-Fi out here in forest grove. I'd have to go to a place with Wi-Fi

I know there's a program that allows for people to actually play pokemon online... I just don't think you can actually change the elite four or not.

If you can make it here :The Coaching Center 4750 Village Plaza Loop Eugene.
There's free WiFi but it also has those that want to play the card game.

dunno where that is.. nor do i think I can get there by trimet

It is a bit far but I was just putting it out there for anyone that can get to Eugene easily(or is in Eugene already) that there is a place for pokemon fans to come to that has free Wi-Fi.
But it is every other Saturday so I'll probably be the only one from here there.
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League

I'd have to find a place like that in P-Land or between Forest Grove and Beaverton

I could only do the card version.
I'm AMAZING at the card game, and if anyone else is in to it, I would love to make that pokemon league as well.
Dibs on being Erica (I was planning on ordering her deck)
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League
Post by: xcthulhux on August 28, 2009, 12:02:47 pm
so im thinking that the saturday after kumoricon would be the best time to have a meeting.
does anyone here object to the meeting being at my house, or would you guys rather have it in a public place.
either is fine with me, as long as i can get there via trimet.

if anyone objects to coming to my house (beaverton/aloha) than i think we should meet at pioneer square

any suggestions/objections?

yeah, fish (carp especially) don't generally run.
don't push it too hard, and remember to feed it every 15 miles.

i actually love typos because they become fun when you play off of them. like i did.

anyway, i think that each gym leader/elite 4 should have 2 types.

we will have to have a tournament on that day to see which gym leader/elite 4 everyone is going to be.
i don't know if we will have enough people to fill the spots though.

um, do any of you actually EV train or use natures and such? Or use shoddy battle to practice? If no then I'll stay clear I suppose. Though if you actually know how to battle then sure I'll join.

I'd be with Pajamurai, and I am interested.. I wouldn't mind being a gym leader; would these be based on in-game trainers?

i don't know about others, but i follow standard rules, ev train, iv breed, play shoddy etc.
i have been in the competitive scene for a long time.

I just got competitive this generation really, if we can get some more competitive users then I'm up for it.
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League
Post by: Man of the Public on August 28, 2009, 02:04:20 pm
I'm what I like to call "Barely Competitive"  I know how to EV train, Breed for natures and IVs, play shoddy, and rule Smogon, I just can't be arsed to do that for everything.
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League
Post by: xcthulhux on August 28, 2009, 02:07:31 pm
i think that most of us here are competitive, and no, the leaders will not be based off of in game leaders.
i think after the first meeting i will create a website.
does anyone so far object to the meeting being at my house in aloha?

dangit, now I really want to get down there for the meeting and try my luck at becomeing a gym leader... even tho I will probably be at a disadvantage.
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League

i want this to kind of be an IN PERSON kind of league, similar to the TCG leagues.

i think we should talk to a gaming store somewhere on the max line, and see if we can get the league started there.
that way we will always have a meeting place, and it can feel more official.

oh ya, that's a great idea... if worse comes to worse, is there another place people could use that's open for long periods of time? like a library?
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League
Post by: xcthulhux on August 28, 2009, 02:33:43 pm
i know tigard library has rooms, but they are small, and it is a bit out of the way.

other than that, i don't know.
all i know is that when there are pokemon players, there is a lot of noise.
so libraries are pretty much out if they don't have free rooms.

also, how would the league run out of a library anyway, it wouldn't work because we need to accept challenges and stuff.
Title: Re: Oregon Pokemon League
Post by: leonmasteries on August 28, 2009, 02:37:24 pm
because do to it being on ds, we sit down and battle each other, that's how we ran our yugioh toarnament's for a few years up in Chehalis. But it could work quite easily, as long as we're somewhat quiet, and it's free, so you don't have to worry about renting space like in other places.

I have set up several leagues on and offline, and i have to say that having them IRL is more interesting, and more successful.
online leagues get boring and tiring, where IRL leagues are more fun because you ACTUALLY get to meet people, and hang out. its more fun to talk about and play pokemon IRL.

about the place where we will meet, im going to call a few game stores here pretty soon and talk to them about it.

i was actually thinking about rainy day games, but im going to ask rivals fantasy games first.

well i just got off the phone with the owner of rivals fantasy games, and they said that they would be more than happy to host it on saturdays possibly once or twice a month.

im not going to say that everyone should come, but i told them we expect 8-12 people (lol), and they said that it would be fine.
also, they have wifi that we can use, which is definitely a plus.

rivals is in hillsboro, and its not hard to find.
google maps, and mapquest is a great tool.

i think we should try it out at rivals first, and if it doesn't work out, we can try rainy day.

this is really exciting.

the one thing that may be a problem is that there will be a pokemon TCG league there at the same time-ish, so if there is any conflict between that and us, we may have to switch days.
lets try not to conflict with the pokemon card people Kthxbai?

By the way, i wanted to mention that Rivals doesn't generally allow outside food, unless its for a group, so if you guys want to make a small pool, we may be able to go pick up some pizza or something from wherever (wherever being most likely Little Caesars)

I will print out a few things such as a type chart, tournament charts, and standard rules/regulations.

It's not a waste of time, if it was maybe on a sunday, then I'd be able to go since sunday's are my lazy days and I most often am doing nothing then, saturdays are more like all hell breaks loose days for me. But the past few Saturdays have been really busy, specially with last minute things that keep popping up.

I'm just saying if regional boards exist. I would have provided link otherwise. It's gonna be hard to find willing (let alone GOOD) players IRL these days. When I was a kid it'd be a matter of asking on the playground or waiting at the mall for someone to notice me and the link cable. I think wifi/SB/NB has killed what was left of that, because the few players who wanted to play seriously found a better medium with more comp. If you don't have to leave the house for a higher level of play than you'd find outside why leave in the first place? I applaud you trying here, but I can't say I didn't see this coming.

well it sounds like we have no confirmations so i probably won't go.
im starting to think this was kind of a waste of time.
You're posting in the wrong place if you want more players. Post on other regional Pokemon boards perhaps? Could try meetup.com too.

Ah, well, for me, it's not hard to get things organized really. I talk to people out side of the internet, and things get out by word-of-mouth

I might be going to Guardian Games' Battle Road tomorrow, so I can die once more at the hands of 20 trainers...and their parents.

I'm kind of asking for help. I feel like I'm in the worst position ever. I have a decent early swarm deck, but I keep getting mashed by others with their more tuned big evolution LV.X and/or SP decks, and I have no way of getting anything that could stand a chance without building up slowly all year, and by then half the cards I've gathered are from sets dropped from Organized Play. I feel like I should have a sign at the table I play at reading "I have NO Level X or SP cards, so don't ask."

I know the main thing is to have fun, but it's hard to have fun when you're losing 90% of the time, you know why, and you can't buy much or have anything worth trading to get what you need...without dropping everything else you like to do and dwell solely on this one game. I can barely make it to a League more than once a month, yet there's so many in my area.

Anyone have any suggestions other than "go to League more, get more money or, just drop the game?"

Unfortunately TCGs take LOTS of money. Before you can actually play at tourneys you need to spend tons of money. Back when I used to play (don't know if this is a good kind of deck anymore) Haymaker variants were a good and cheap way to get into the game. If this is still viable (game's prbly changed so much since I last played) I'd go for it, get some winnings and notoriety, then start building your dream deck on the side. I'd say find a different hobby if you can't commit more time though.... Gotta play to level up vs others.

Well, actually my dream deck right now is to build a classic haymaker using tourney legal cards. They have reprints of base set Hitmonchan, Electabuzz and jungle Scyther, and the "low kick 20" machop is in stormfront (as well as the hard hitting basic killer, Machamp). So I guess if I can't beat em' I'll just take what I can. And hey, there's always Magic in the air.

ewwww Machamp. Terrible card. Same with Machoke. Stop your evolution line with Machop... You're missing the point of Haymaker if you're having stage 2 evos.... Post your config and I'll help you out. Or PM if you feel uncomfortable posting in a thread.

And what, Magic takes more money and time <_<

I can't find a good place to split this topic, but it looks like there's a good discussion regarding the Pokemon TCG going on.  Would one of you mind starting a new topic to continue that discussion?

Thanks.

You're not understanding the post at all. When you split a topic, you have to actually make a point in the topic where you split it. That is the topic of discussion, not where to put the split topic.
That said, it's clear that the last post on the previous page is the post at which you'd splice the topic, Tofu. Trim these last few posts and the splice will be good to go, which you should undoubtedly put in Gaming. Or just let the other guy make a TCG topic.
