The dance is usually on the second day, meaning sunday. And last year it was at 10 and in the ball room...So, I'm guessing it will be around the same time, and probably in the Paviloin Room, on the Plaza floor, or the Main Events room on the Ball Room level...
But, I'm just guessing ^^;

I'll be Yuna in her wedding dress on Sunday and Monday, so I'll probably go as her in a fancy mask, if i have the time and extra feathers. No worries about the horrendously long train, though. I'm sewing in clasps to the underside so I can roll it up into the feather motif/wings in the back. XD

Oh yes I will be pulling it back...but I'm thinking of maybe making a sash to tie around my waist and tie into a bow...or...just making a bow and attaching snaps to the back of the dress and pull it back that way and attach the bow...if I do decide to do that, what color should the bow/sash be? White or black?

Some of the cons I've been to allow make-up masks, side masks and no masks.
I'm going as Halloween Town Riku since it's formal, so I'm going to have a mini side mask but I don't know it that's alright of if I need to wear two masks X'D

That's a gorgeous mask, I've seen others from Venice too and they were equally beautiful. Europeans and their amazing mask making skills. xD
If you don't bring it though I'm sure you'll find another great mask to wear. C: Since I can understand why you'd be nervous about it being damaged.

A girl we were sitting with had sharpies so we colored on them (and my friend and I played matchmaker for this couple, it was cute. >.>).

(Why a nightgown? Well my other teddiursa one is too. >.> XD)
I saw it at good will and it was really pretty so my friend's gunna help me put brown embellishments on it so it matches my teddiursa cosplay. :D

Hmm... Tempting, tempting.
The train is much shorter on Garnet and it's easier to wear; especially for dancing. I have to do some fancy tapework to stop from falling out on the sides. (go find a picture that shows the edges/side of Yuna's wedding dress and you'll see why it could EASILY show too much side-boob for con allowances without careful taping up. ^^;; )

I heard that they're not doing a panel this year and they'll only be giving out like 20-30 masks. So, it'd be safer to just make your mask. And if all else fails, go to a party store and get one cheap for less than a dollar.

My worry is that it's not brown enough to be a Teddiursa dress, but I don't know what else to do with it, I was thinking of getting some brown leggings, and my Yuna wrap thing makes a wonderful shawl, I was also wondering if I shouldn't sew like a brown version of that for this.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make it more Teddiursa-y?
Oh, and I will be wearing my ears and moon thingy, but still, it's hard to recognize.
EDIT: Also, the brown thing's not attached cause this pretty white sequined band is where I put the brown one, it stays where I want it to when it's on me though.

People aren't going to be mega focused on how effectively you reflect your character at the masquerade (since some aren't even going in cosplay but just fancy attire) so I think you'll be fine. There is actually two layers of it, and I have tan dye. If I can control it well enough I could dye the bottom layer and leave the top white and lacy. I'm just scared to ruin it. XP

It was actually already the golden color. I'm sort of slow at crafts, so it took me a little over an hour. xD;; I had to be careful with glue because I'm such a klutz when it comes to glue. D8 It gets everywhere.

Please keep your posts on topic, and don't clutter the thread with random chat (take it IM or PM or the Off-Topic forum). Questions regarding the mask get lost in all the chatter.
In response to some of the questions I saw:
There is no mask making panel. A limited number will be available at the door, but you are better off supplying your own.
You will be required to wear a mask. No mask, no entry. That being said, I understand that some people have trouble with the masks (like if you wear glasses). You can use face paint to create the mask, or at least have one eye covered by a mask.
And just to clarify (because I have received e-mails)... the dress code is semi-formal or cosplay. Generic cat person is not cosplay... generic cat person in semi-formal attire is fine.

A mask on a stick is acceptable, but keep in mind that you will have to wear the mask the entire time you are in the ballroom, so you arm may get tired. You can always step out, and if there is not a huge line waiting, get back in, but you will have to wear the mask.

An eye patch is not a mask. True, you can do a mask only around one eye, but you are going to have to be a bit more creative that just an eye patch. ;) Also, you need to make sure that whatever you do, it does not impair your vision.. you will be dancing.

Omg...that was horrible! I didn't have a mask but I had my friend's Matt goggles and I had to wear them the entire time! They were super hot to wear because of the stuff on the inside and it always left red lines on my face! But every time I slipped it off just to wipe some sweat away some person came up to me and said that I either had to keep it on or leave! Dx

It wasn't completely enforced last year because there was some question of the dress code not being announced enough for people. Which is why it's on the website, being pushed in the forums, and in the con book this year. If all goes well, I will also have a sign outside the dance :D
We are really trying to enforce it this year. There are two other dances which are informal.. for 2 hours people can be a bit more formal.

what kind of masks are you all doing? I bought this really nice fancy mask at last SakuraCon but it doesn't fit with my dress this K-Con.
So I bought some cheap eye-covering wigs at Micheals and plan to dump a load of glitter on them and then take a glitter glue pen and make some designs.
But I've seen very extravagant types of masks at previous masqurades too.
So what is everyone doing?

They are going to be watching a lot more closely this year, and that's not true. They expect you to keep your masks on at all times during the Masquerade portion of the dance, whether you're sitting around or dancing doesn't matter. Just thought I'd repeat what I'd heard.~

I remember last year I was the only one out of my friends to bring a mask so I triple-folded some newspaper and cut out three masks within a minute and taped it on each of their noses so that the staff would let them in. Most hilarious thing ever.

I was at walgreens and they have a variety of them. There are plain ones that come in several colors (orange, red, green, black, purple, white, etc.) and are only 69 cents each. The fancier ones with feathers and glitter were only 6 dollars. I'm just sayin'. :P

Look in the Halloween section of any store and you're bound to find some sort of masquerade mask.
Those were just particularly affordable yet still decent looking (esp. the $6 ones... they're actually pretty neat IMO).

Just to throw this out there (THIS IS NOT FINALIZED YET!) the Masquerade Ball may not be a part of Kumoricon next year. At the Rant and Rave after closing ceremonies, they talked about taking it out next year because of various reasons including the fact that people refused to get online and read/apply the dress code, masks were a difficulty, and the mask-making workshop leaves FAR too much of a mess and no one is willing to run it. Many attendees say that they were upset about less time for the rave, but because of the commotion and all of the events going on that could only fit in that ball room time built up. If (and I mean IF) they take out an event, it would probably be the Masquerade Ball from what I have heard. And remember, there are always the mini events throughout the year that can be a formalized Masquerade Ball.

Masquerade was fun! I was Rima off of vampire knight. I lost my glasses at the end of the dance, scared the pee out of me.@x@; but two hour's later they showed up at lost and found.^,^; I was soo happy. The DJ did a great job of music variety. lol, and here's a story for you all: So a little kid dressed as ouran's Honey, came up to me and asked "Hello, I was wondering if you would dance with my friend?". I asked who he was, but he was too far away so I couldn't see him, but I still agreed(I was too curious). He was tall, I didn't even come close to his shoulder(I'm only 5ft, but still). Turned out he was there against his will and didn't like anime that much, so after about 2 awkward minutes of dancing we parted way's. He was a big downer, I mean why dance with a girl in cosplay if you dislike anime so much? Though he was unenthusiastic, I went straight back to dancing with my friends. Now I have lots of funny story's to tell, the guy is just one of a few.>x< thanks to anyone who danced with us!

As a staffer watching over the dance, I too thought it went well. As for the comment above, there are some problems such as not having a mask panel before the dance, and improper attire due to people not reading THE RULES printed in the book or online ahead of time. While I was not doing line duty I did pop out to the line from time to time and the problem with costume/semi-formal wear did not seem that big of a deal. (sorry if you got told you couldn't enter)
I think the staff at R&R were over emphasizing their own personal dislike for the pre-planning of a Masquerade. The dance is not so much work as it is getting everyone to follow the rules without a lot of disappointed people turned away, but that's totally dependent on you all reading the rules. I know most of you on here were well aware of what was expected of you before you ever showed up to the convention, but not everyone likes to go through websites to find information. I personally liked the dance and would like to see it again next year.
That being said I'll see what can be done to keep it going. If anyone has ideas on how to make the dance better, such as music, attire, or dance events let the program director Jamiche or myself know. I would have loved to see 20minutes or so set aside for a group dance floor session with the dances preformed in the dance lesson events before hand. What do you all think? ^.^

I hope they don't cancel the masquerade. I enjoy the masquerades far more than the raves - this year I didn't even go to the raves. Besides, masks are so fun to make!

Hopefully next year we will have a mask making panel like the years before. And remember STICK masks MUST REMAIN up on your face (or close enough) at all times :D Damn you 3 people with the stick masks this year making me scold you *shakes fist*

I'm fairly sure there are lots of ways around a wig that cant be smooshed without resorting to a stick. Such things would be covered in a panel if we had one..

Like having two ties...One on each side of the mask that just go around your ears. It's not that comfortable, but it works.

Actually, it wouldn't be. The mask panel we had the year before was simply a place for people to make masks. We provided plastic masks, glitter, feathers, sequins and glue, and let people at it.
There was no panel this year because a) no one to run it, b) made a huge mess, and c) supplies.
The con has just ended, and it's a whole year until the next one. Nothing is set in stone. Whether or not there is another masquerade is going to depend on what all is happening next year, and interest.
And yes, there is interest in the masquerade, and there were some great masks/outfits this year. But there is also just as many people who complain about the dress code, masks, and music. Even with the dress code being posted online well in advance, and in the con book, do you know how many people were turned away with the liberal dress code we did have? And how many complained about it?
So, we will just have to see what next year brings us ;)

the extension of cosplay being allowed already is a huge exception given to the dress code ^-^
as a fan of balls and how formal they are as well as how this ball turned out, I like the rules the way they are :D
btw, not picking a fight, I'm just saying that I dont think the masquerade should be taken away because of complaints from people who didnt read the rules that were posted everywhere, its taking the fun away from people who do

Oh, I agree that is not a reason to do so. But when we are limited on space in the schedule, and the number of complaints far outweigh the people who enjoyed it.... you can see where that might lead.
But, like I said.. nothing is set in stone yet.. there is still a long time to make those decisions ;)
(Although, it is nice to hear the complaint annoy others as well ;D)

I think it could be fun! Setting up some examples, giving advice for certain cosplays...
If we had more than just that day it would be nice to give paper mache options. Maybe if the panel would be on that registration Friday then have the mache that day and the rest of the days would be just normal masks or small amounts of the mache.

Like you said the people who complained obviously never cared to look for them, not even browse the main con book 2 PAGE SPREAD on the ball.. If you miss that you are more blind then me at the ball with my glasses fogging up under the mask. (contacts would have been a help hehe) As for the complainers, I've read more people say they like it on these forums then say it was suck, you aren't likely to just read one thread to see everyone's voice. Next year I'd run the mask booth, if its just a hear you go thing that makes it easy. And I'm a little neat freak so keeping it under control *hopefully* would be easy enough. That's 2 of the 3 problems SOLVED! weeee. Sadly getting the materials is the hardest problem (what about space?), and I got no ideas :/
As for a panel, I bet we could showcase a lot of different ways to make masks out of easy items. No they wouldn't get to make them, they would be stuck with most the free stuff that the Con provides (unless we actually got a limited supply for different masks) but they would be more stoked about making there own for next time.
If anyone wishes to form a panel about making masks send me a PM! I'm not saying its going to happen, its still a year away, but we can at least get a discussion going about possibilities and I can bring any ideas we think of to the board at our general meetings.

Also, if you have a mask making panel, you should quickly include what is required to go to Masque. Like pictures of what is appropriate for the girls and guys to wear. And worn them that if they don't, they will be turned away.

Just focusing on the masks for the most point, but along with clothing rules and Etiquette there would be advice on dancing and locations to learn dance. Things like this would/could all be encompassed into the mask making "Masquerade Ballroom functions and functional wear" panel :D Or something like it...

Attire
Non-formal fabrics such as flannel, denim, and mylar shall not be allowed. At least half of your body must be covered in fabric—bare midriffs or bare chests are not allowed. Formal/semi-formal attire from Asian countries is acceptable.
I think that is a stupid rule myself but I'm not the dress code dungeon master making these rules. :( (It is semi-FORMAL however so..?)

I had a great time and the masquerade was definitely one of the highlights of my experience at kcon this year...
The only hiccup was when me and my friend were almost turned away because we cosplayed a lesser-known sports manga...well, that was quickly resolved, thanks! The other person at the door let us in. Otherwise it was awesome and I'd be very sad if it wasn't gonna happen next year.

I loved teaching Squall the waltz to the moon for her Rinoa. xD Definately fun~ I love the masquerade!

We should have people bring a photo or at least remember the characters name that you or cosplaying next year. That would solve like half the problems with attire right there :D
