I was reading through my Chobits mangas the other day and in between my feelings of giddiness and excitement, I realized .. I think I like Chi a little too much. Now let's not get carried away.. obviously she's fake. But I dunno.. when I read the manga, I'm like, "Dammit! She's different! I know she is! She's special!"
When she does something cute or silly or gets sad, I admire the art and try to pinpoint her emotions and think, "Yeah, see...! She looks so real.. like a real human... oh.. well, I mean, it's a manga.. but.. still.."
I guess in a way it kind of reminds me of being a kid again. When you believed anything was possible. Like the feeling I used to get when I'd play Super Mario Bros or watch Teenage Mutant Ninjas Turtles. The kind of thing that, when you were younger, it was so cool that you wished and wished you would have dreams about it.. just so you could experience it like it was real.
I've noticed that Miyazaki films have a similar effect on me. As my brother put it when we were watching Howl's Moving Castle, "It's like watching The Wizard of Oz again for the first time." Like you spent your whole life wanting to be an adult but now that you are, you miss the simple little things; the magic and curiosity of a life free of responsibilities and limits.
Anyone else get a similar vibe? Or am I totally embarrassing myself here and about to be ridiculed off the face of the Internet? ;)

Not embarassing yourself at all! I really understand what you are talking about. I get sucked into particular anime/manga really easily. In part, I know that is due to the skill and imagination of the artists/manga-ka, but also, I am always yearning and wishing to have some true interactions and experiences with these characters. One example being FMA, I've been watching through that, and the mood gradually shifts from happy and light-hearted to tragic and dismal, thus far anyway. I won't put any spoilers, but when something tragic happens, I get pretty torn up, because of the connection that has been made with the characters. It's a heavy thing.
This is also why I am so in love with the Final Fantasy game series. Those games involve the player very very personally, and it makes the world, plot, and characters so close and real to the player, no matter who they are in reality. It's sad when the game ends, feel like I'm being torn from people I've spent great time with.
Yeah, I get pretty attached also. I know nobody is real in these things, but that is where the dreamer in us all takes over, right? ^_^

There is a replica of Mei and Satsuki's (My Neighbor Totoro) house in Japan, and I wanted to live in it. >_>;;; I am really obsessed with alot of Totoro... everything. Backpacks, books, manga, ect. Tom even got a catbus cosplayer to glomp me and give me pocky at my first kumoricon (Truly the highlight of the con).

Yeah. A few animes have made me... cry. Chobits included.

Totoro rocks. I was just watching it the other night.
And by the way.. your avatar is amazing, Neko. *takes a bite out of it*

I've been that way with Kingdom Hearts. It's beginning to startle me.

That's pretty cool to know. Kind of like how there is a replica of the Simpsons' house somewhere in the Us. Except that I would actually want to live in the Totoro house. I love that film. It got me hooked on Miyazaki's work. Too cute!

Here in Eugene we have a replica of Jebedia Springfield and the Comic Store guy
-
heh, really? That's pretty cool. I guess since the Springfield of the Simpsons is actually supposed to be Springfield, OR, then it would make sense for there to be a lot of tributes and things of that matter around Oregon.
-
It would also make sense because Matt Groening is from Oregon, isn't he? :3
As for the topic ... yeah, I get that way sometimes.
I was agonizing over the end of Final Fantasy: Unlimited, recently. XD
I felt really connected with the characters from Ouran Koukou Host Club during my own marathon of watching it...

After my experiences at Kumoricon, I feelt I really need to watch some Ouran Koukou Host Club. I sat in during a screening of some episodes in a viewing room and really liked it, thought it was mighty cute!
-
yeah you can see this happening when you show a certin episode of fma where a certin person dies and see how people react, if they want to cry.... sniff
-
Yeah, I felt something for Chi too. But then I kept thinking about how much she had to learn about absolutely everything, and I don't think I have the patience for that. But then I am a total sucker for romantic comedies anyway.

*raises hand* kingdom hearts...jeez me too

Well, every time I watch Haibane Renmei, out come the waterworks, but if you've seen my previous posts, that should come as absolutely no surprise. This is a series which deals with the questions I ask myself almost constantly - ie, what is the meaning of my existence? What does it mean to be a good human being? What gives my life meaning? Does it even have a meaning?
Also, I take NGE very seriously, given that it is the product of Hideaki Anno's experiences with depression and psychotherapy. As a dude with chronic depression and lots of experience with psychotherapy, I find it a valuable treatise on the definition of the self in relation to others. For this reason, eps 25 and 26 are to me the entire point of the whole series. I feel like the whole robots/angels bit was just candy to get us to the real ideas of identity and communication. I see these same themes as critical to Serial Experiments Lain.
I, however, am very atypical of aime fans, in as much as I approached the genre from a strictly analytical perspective, when I was 27 years old, never having watched the stuff earlier. I only later developed a real love for the format. So much so that I really adored Snow Fairy Sugar.
-
Well when I was about 10 or 11 I had the biggest crush on Athena from the GAME BOY version of her from King of Fighters 94. I remember frequently wishing she was real. Haha, I was so lame. Even if my wish had been granted she wouldn't have gone for some creepy little kid in a Gengar shirt. Haha.
-
Haven't you ever seen anime? Girls like that always go for the geeky, awkward semi-perverted guys. Always. It's like a freakin' law of nature or something.

Further deepening an otaku's love for anime babes ;)
-
Ever think you like a particular anime or character too much
yes.
that is what fanfic and cosplay is for.
^_^
-
I remember having a crush on an anime character. I'm not saying which one though.
-
Oh come on! Do tell!!!
I'm sure my first animated "crush" is much more embarrassing (not anime)
-
Oh man yes! I'm in love with L. As i think many other people are, but i like that character way to much. XD
-
If it makes you feel better Negima, I'll say some embarassing things about me and my anime obsessions.
Sometimes I hug my Hiei and Kurama plushies and tell them goodnight before I go to bed.
One of my friends went up in front of the class to translate a choir warm-up into Japanese, and I pointed at him and said, quite loudly, "You're not Shuichi Shindou!!" I think I got in trouble for that one.
My friend has a Yu Yu Hakusho wall scroll, and when I went over to visit her, I stood in front of it petting Hiei for about five minutes.
*jumps up on a table* I am an anime FREAK!!
-

After they spend at least 10 episodes beating the crap out of them......
Totally worth it!
I actually rarely get emotionally involved, but when I do I dive in with both feet. I was on the verge of tears for the Ouran finale.
I had plenty of crushes when I was growing up, some of them more embarrassing than others. Some of them creepy without context (like the little girls I want to raise and not be perveted with at all).
However I am proud to say that for years I was obsessed with Harley Quinn from the Batman cartoons. So much so that she helped me find my wonderful girlfriend Vallie when she was still all the way over in Michigan!
So don't worry! Obsessive love for animated characters can lead to wonderful things!
-
I think I've obsessed over the following characters:
Sasami (Tenchi Muyo)
Asuka (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Chi (Chobits)
Misha (Pita-Ten)
I had a semi-obsession with Sakura from CCS for awhile. And I didn't even watch the anime, besides the first movie. I just really liked all the outfits she wore. They were cute.
I spent way too much money on Sasami anime cels. And I have one with Sakura and Tomoyo.
Kinda funny if you think about it.. none of the characters are even remotely similar.
-
I feel the same way. I mean...When I was reading deathnote the first frame with L in it I knew "Ope that's going to be my obsession I bet." And I even tried not to, but I couldn't. I mean, it's kinda lame because everyone and their nerdy sister is obsessed with L...but I don't know, it just broke my heart to know that he isn't a real person, and I got depressed for a while. I mean...hell I even cut my hair like his, I thought it would make me feel better, but it hasn't really.
I find I look for people who remind me of him, and I just can't find any. Lol there's my friend Nathan who looks like Raito, and his girlfriend who looks like misa sort of, and then there's Madonna who looks like Mello, and several Matsudas...but no L's. I think I'm going to be very overwealmed with joy at Kumoricon because lots of people are cosplaying as L I hear c; .
I also was fascinated by Mugen from Samurai champloo for quite a while, but his spot got sort of absorbed by my L obsession. And of course there's Ishida from Bleach, I haven't watched much bleach but I bet I'll obsess over him once I get more of the manga.
-
Okay, JUST because I have a shrine for him in my room where I leave him offerings and burn incense and pray to him every other night, does NOT mean I don't like him too much.
[edit;] oops, double negative .-.

I saw that L! And his sign. 8D Did you see him dance? It was amazing.

Now..
O.o I will admit that I have a strange obsession with Orochimaru from Naruto and that's all that I'm saying.
-

hee hee its like when i found the candy gackt is used to pramote e-ma, i went back home to the pile of gackt stuff was like "here more gackt candy!!"
my friend heard me call it gackt candy and he says it sounds kinda wrong
maybe you can like too much at dinner at a friends a girl was like whos that on your shirt, and hair clips and necklace and shoe laces,
-
@ pixie
dude! that L rocked. unfortunately i never saw him dancing. :/
i told him he was one of the best L's at the con, and he replied 'and you're one of the ... cutest little asian girls!'. XD i was only wearing a yukata that day...

I remember something about him sitting in a chair when a girl got a picture with him and everybody spazzed.
-
Pixie Sticks, your signature picture is amazing.
-
ah yes, the first time I had EVER heard of Death Note was when I talked to him and the girl he came with from California about Pocky club in the Friday night badge pick up line!
Those two BOTH joined Pocky Club immediately and I hope I can get them to reprise their costumes for next year!

OH my!! *seriously rolling all over the floor laughing* -picks self up and wipes the lint off-
Ahhh....Yagami-kun IS gay!!! X3...but that's why I love him too ^.^. But only a little >_>
AND:
Gackt might as well be anime, he's quite animated. And he's got spiky hair! (which automatically makes him anime ^.^)

The girl he came with from california, was she cosplaying as Naruto? If so then her name is Jessica and I made friends with her. XD
When we were in the line to the dance, L even danced there. In that small little space lol

I saw him with a "Hug Me" poster or something. I was tempted to go up to him, hug him and then steal a grope. But I didn't. You never know how things like that might go if you don't know the person!
-
@reppy
lol. :)
i heard they banned the hug/glomp/kiss signs later in the con though. :/
-
They did? .-.
I remember a staff was asking other staff if they should take away a sign that said "glomp me I'm emo" or something like that, but the rules were that as long as it didn't involve money, it was okay...
When was this 'later'?
-
the rule had always been there, it was in our program thing we got under policies
"signs and solicitatation no attendee of Kumoricon may wear or carry a sign offering paid services whether for cash or other form of payment, offering free services, or soliciting behavior from other attendees."
-
So no " Will GLOMP for FOOD" T-Shirts next year?
-
Sad day :'C -goes into the corner Tamaki-style and mopes with a cloud over her head-
-
Aw man! For the past two years i've had so much fun glomping people with those signs...;_;. *joins Lit_of_Fey in the corner*
-
I'm not really ARGUING, but I would just like to know what their reasoning for that is? lol were people killed by glomp-happy fangirls/boys looking to snag a grope? I like to ask "why" because it annoys people ^.^
-

I think it's an age thing or something. I don't know. A lot of under 18 people at the con.
-

Hmm that makes sense, don't want some one to claim they were molested. That's some Baaad voodoo :O
-
If I remember correctly in the past you can still glomp someone freely if you ask them first. But then again that takes away the "surprise glomp" option.
I remember when I cosplayed as Seta (Love Hina) I held up a sign that said "Help, no one knows my character." I ended up getting sympathy hugs.
-
At K-Con 2k4 I held up signs and got chicks to hug/kiss me infront of my girlfriend... She didn't mind the kiss I got but when one girl hugged me she got pissed.
And glomping is still good to go, but yeah... You need to get permission first since some glomps managed to hurt people/offend people.
And on topic... Need I say I like a certain anime/character too much? On all but one forum I'm on I have something Asuka related in my sig/avatar/profile. I love Evangelion and will fully admit I'm an Asuka fan boy.
-
Hell no. lol
-
I can totally relate to you guys. Ever since I was a teeny tot, I've always been daydreaming about my favorite characters hanging out with me. I still do. Oh yes. Dream is my middle name.
The one Anime I was overly obsessed with was Pokemon. I even cried a few times because I wanted the characters to be real so badly. Heh, I was so emo back then. Middle school days, what a ride.
My current obsession is Hiei... but then again, I get easily obsessed with other Anime guys (Shigure, Shino, Ishida...). ^^0
-
I often wonder if I like Yuka Takeuchi from Variable Geo or Chiharu Shinonome from Eiken too much. But hey, I don't mind if I DO like them too much.
Please do not complain because I like Eiken, that's just how I am. :|
-

I love Asuka. I was obsessed with her for a couple years. Still love her, too.

I used to imagine how cool it would be to have my very own Pikachu that would sit on my shoulder all the time. Walk around the mall and stuff. Ain't nobody messin' with me when I got my Pikachu. Represent Pokemon.
I got sad on a couple Pokemon episodes; the Butterfree one and Pikachu Forest, if i I recall correctly..
-
haha, I remember my first anime crush... it was li from ccs when I was nine or ten yrs.-old xD
My first thought was, 'you've GOT to be joking? Am I falling in love with a make-believe character?' and yeah, I'd have to say that I was. since then, it's sparked many anime crushes such as hatsuharu from furuba, Tamaki from ouran, and... hell if I can remember all of them! xD
Sure, I've been made fun of it by others, but I figure... so what? What's so wrong about day-dreaming? They're ideal people and characters that wouldn't exist otherwise if it weren't for sparked imagination... so I say, don't let reality and the others get ya down... *nod* indeed.
-
I love Asuka. I was obsessed with her for a couple years. Still love her, too.
Yeah... I've been obsessed with her for a good 6 or 7 years now. My girlfriend isn't really helping either... She dyed her hair red, has blue eyes and is more than happy to cosplay as Asuka (she has for the last two or three years now at K-Con) in multiple costumes.
Funny thing is, when I first found out about Asuka, I didn't really like her. My brother showed me an image of a chick whose name was "Asuka Langley" which was neat because my last name is Langley... Of course I thought "Wow, cool, I don't really care." The irony that I'd end up obsessed with her within a year.
I tend to do stuff like that, not be interested/like something at first before going totally crazy about it.
-

-
Yeah... Though that yellow badge is now mis-leading.
That's my girlfriend. She's actually done awesome with the costume, just needs the right shoes and she's set. Her hair can be done for it and look pretty good. She pulls Asuka off fairly well.
-
I'm extremely obsessed with Kino no Tabi... It's so awesome! I mean who doesn't love a good philosophical anime complete with a talking motorcycle? :D
