Title: Rant about the "negotiations" regarding masks and
Post by: TheHammerSpeaks on August 29, 2006, 08:26:58 pm
The twin towers were targeted because they represented Global Capitalism, the power of the United States, and arguably the pillaging of the Middle East for its petroleum resources.  Other terrorist attacks mirror this, targeting enemies that are clearly either symbolic or strategic objectives in the disruption of american government, economy, and military activity.

The drive behind the recruitment of terrorists is the glory that they see, and the mystique (a mystique that is largely created by our exaggeration of the threat) of the terrorist who wins glory by doing harm to an enemy state that has been vilified.  It is a battle fought purely in the realm of image.

Imagine a terrorist attack on a convention filled with peaceful anime lovers.  How could that possibly help a terrorist cause?  Why would any terrorist group target them?

Sure, there are going to be a lot of people at kumoricon.  still, it isn't going to be a target of terrorists, especially ones wielding METAL SUITS OF ARMOR AND BROADSWORDS.  Why has the hotel changed its policy like this?

Garghgh

They're afraid we're going to clobber their 'normal' guests with swords and shovels.  >\

One reason we don't want masks is due to the fact that last year someone decided to start bitching at hotel Staff! while wearing a mask.

Maybe they'll change their minds about this crap next year...  I hope.  There are just so many cosplays that are going to suffer without metal or masks...  It would suck for people to go through this for 2 years in a row...  Maybe if everyone behaves well this year they'll calm down...

I think you're taking it all out of context. I'd rather feel safe knowing that Hotel security is looking out for EVERYONEs general intrest.

If you're staying at a hotel as a guest of a convention or not, you want to know that the hotel will not jeopardize your safety.

If you're just a guest and you see a mass of people dressed in odd clothing and doing things you don't do in daily life, of course they will be put off.

But it's worse, when something BAD happens. If a masked person, say a sex offender, parades around like the rest of the con-goers in a mask and starts touching people. Who gets the blame? We do because we encourage masks, while all this time it was some sex offender using the fact that we're dressed differently to get away with his crime.
THEN, people from the hotel and the con will point fingers at one another and then at the Hotel for not DOING anything about it.

It's better they stop it now, then something awful happens. I'm not concerned about TERRORISM, I'm concerned for EVERYONES safety, and I think you all should too.

No masks or other items which obscure an attendees face from view may be worn while in the corridors and common areas of the hotel.

Notice it doesn't say "within the convention space" as does the previous statement in that post.

Just thought I'd point that out.

I think Pinq said it best. The Doubletree had changed their mask policy DURING convention last year because of what Waffles talked about.

They are just making it so it prevents something before it happens so they don't have to deal with the consequences of it happening. While it sucks, oh well, let's just deal with it and have fun anyway.

As for metal..I won't even go into that one because most cons don't even allow metal yet we (normally) do allow stage steel.

remember guys n gals that the main reason the hotel dosent want us in masks while wandering around is because we could not see where we are going and hurt ourselves then turn around and sue the hotel.  so many people want to do this that they eliminate the threat.

That sounds more logical than "terrorists" pissed off about their nation selling us oil, but it's still pretty stupid, since last year's con was at a different hotel.
