This is just a thought, but maybe around that time is when most people heard of the forum section and signed up.

It's the date when the forums were updated. Everyone who was grandfathered in from the previous forum has this as their join date. If I'm right, you won't find anyone who joined before this date. (It's the 19th, actually.)

Go to the Memberlist and the default order of members is by registration date. You can see that it's 19 Dec 2004. As Meg said, that's when we switched the forums over from some ancient system using abacuses and quill pens. Everyone had to re-register at the time.

The Kumoricon forum used to be on another site then it switched over to this one.

I can't remember if the usernames were switched automatically or not but that was the day we switched forums and were re-registered.
