Post by: JeffT on August 04, 2009, 08:34:06 pm
The first General Meeting in August will be held on Sunday, August 9 from 1pm-5pm at our hotel, the Hilton Portland and Executive Tower.

The exact room is still being determined.

Hilton Portland and Executive Tower
921 SW 6th Ave
Portland, OR 97204

Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=921+SW+Sixth+Avenue,+Portland,+OR+97204&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17) with aerial view

General meetings are open to the public. Meet and plan with other staff, join staff or become a volunteer, and learn about open staff positions.

Brace for expensive parking! I heard that Portland has decided to leave the parking meters ON for all days, rather than turning them off on Sundays

From http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=34798 (http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=34798):

Quote
Hours of Operation

Parking meters operate in Downtown (including NW) from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday.

Lloyd District meters (from just south of Weidler to just south of Lloyd Blvd and Grand Avenue to the River) operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.   All other Lloyd District meters operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

OHSU Meter District operates from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Free Parking on , New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

So yes, expect to have to pay for parking if your driving to the meeting. Depending on the cost, it might be easier to use a Smart Park (http://www.portlandonline.com/smartpark/).

Speaking of which, is it true that there won't be a fareless square come Sept? If so, before or after Labor Day? (In Eugene, our EMX rapid transit is instituting fares for the first time, the day after Labor Day.)
Meantime, I will be at my cousin's wedding in the midwest during this meeting, but Kate and Steve from Creation Station will likely be there, if anyone has any questions--and especially if anyone would like,
you are more than welcome to turn in your fanfics, novella, novels, manga, online manga, and webcomic entries for our contest, in person there at the meeting!
If interested in doing so, try to reach me or Kate (mellonemrys) before the meeting to facilitate hooking up!

There is a possiblity it will be limited to rail only (MAX and street car still being free), but it is just a proposal right now. http://trimet.org/news/farelessrail.htm

I'll be LATE to this, but I'll be there in time for breakouts to talk tournaments/gaming, or anything else anyone needs to talk to me about.

I haven't been to a meeting before (or a hotel, for that matter), so, do I just walk in, and go to the room that will be determined? Or, do I ask/check in with a lobbyist, or something like that?

I also don't have a parent permission form for staffing/volunteering, so, if I end up signing up at this meeting, would it be okay to turn in my form without it until the next meeting, or will you have some available there?

We'll have the forms you need there, but you'd still need the parental consent form before you were official. Of course if you bring a parent with you that can be taken care of as well.

You can just walk into the hotel and start looking for Kumoricon signs. I have a feeling will be upstairs, but keep your eyes open just in case.

I have a question, I heard that this con was going to be a 24hr con from a friend that went to this meeting, is this true?
Title: Re: 2009 August 9 general meeting
Post by: kylite on August 13, 2009, 12:43:20 pm
that is correct

Yes, the con is now officially 24 hrs.  What it really breaks down to is viewing rooms are running 24 hrs, gaming (both console and tabletop) will only be closed from 6am-8am for general clean-up, and panels can run later than 2am.

Does this change affect the curfew at all?

And I've been wondering, if one's a minor but is staying at the hotel can the con penalize them from being in the lobby after hours? I should think not but I'm not sure =,)

There is no change to curfew - it is still 12am to 6am.  Minors will not be allowed in convention space, and as the hotel is strongly discouraging hanging out in the lobby, the best place to hang out will be in your rooms.

Try telling that to Taco Bell enthusiasts...  ;D

But seriously, this is awesome!  Maybe next year we could try doing some panel or something that relates to the morning, like,... uh,... I don't know, learning how to cook a traditional Japanese breakfast, or something...?

That is a fabulous idea. I LOVE Japanese breakfasts... miso soup with tofu, and rice, and fish, and egg, and greens, and nattou (yum! haha) and tea... which reminds me... what food will be available at the Con site? I imagine any restaurant in the Hilton, if there is one, would cost a fortune, but how about nearby?

There are a ton of nearby restaurants. In the pocket guide or program book we'll publish a food map, and post it online near to the con.
