Here we go again... :)

Rules and sign-up form for this year's Cosplay Chess are available here (http://www.kumoricon.org/?page_id=95).

For the third year, we are looking for 32 chess pieces, and 2 chess masters for the event, as well as alternates.  You do not have to know how to play chess if you are chess piece, all moves will be coordinated by the chess masters.

As this is Cosplay Chess, your character cosplay will be the deciding factor in who gets to participate.  This is not a first-come, first-serve sign-up - we will be looking for complete cosplays, with a preference for well-known characters.  This is a separate event from the Cosplay Contest, you will not be judged on the quality of the cosplay, or if you made it yourself - you just need to be a recognizable character.

To sign-up to be a chess piece, you need to do the following:

    * Read the rules (http://www.kumoricon.org/?page_id=97).
    * Fill out the registration form.
    * Submit the form and photos of your costume to chess@kumoricon.org

You must include photos of you in your cosplay, or of your cosplay itself.  This year, images of your character will not suffice.  Since this is not first-come, first-serve, you have time to wait until your cosplay is complete... there is no penalty for being one of the last ones to register.  You are also allowed to submit more than one cosplay (just submit a separate form for each.)

If you are interested in being a chess master, or want to help out in another way, please let us know by posting here, or via e-mail or PM.

Sign-ups will be open until August 22nd.  Players will be notified of their team and position the week before con, and will be required to attend a meeting before the event.

No, I won't know until I see who all signs up.. but I can hope for it :D Because I'm a dork that way...

Last year, I think evil outweighed the good... they seem to be more popular for cosplay.

How long does Cosplay Chess generally last? Does it take up an entire day of the convention if you're involved in it?

For pictures can we send links of our cosplay.com profiles for the particular costume, or do we have to submit attached photos?

@ Sayda, Last year it was on a Monday, and it didn't take the whole day but it was the biggest event and many people (myself included) left the con after it was over~

@ Sayda - Chess happens on the last day, when there's not a lot of other stuff going on.  If you are participating, you have to check in an hour prior to (which usually coincides with hotel check out, so you need to take that into account).  Usually I allot about 3 hours for the event itself, but I believe it ended earlier than that.

@ oslapedo - As long as the link works, it's fine.

I'm not sure if I should do Larxene or Cloud. I think Cloud would be chosen over the others since he is more well known.

Ehh FMA isn't really that rare but it's always great to see cosplayers from it.~ I only say this because I cosplayed from it last year at Kumoricon and wandered around with a large group of cosplayers from it.

BTW Nicolie sign up as Kuja!
For the longest time  he was my favorite character-not in FF but 'of all media to EVAR exist'  This title has only recently been tied ( maybe JUST Slightly OVERTAKEN) with Kanda-whom Ill be cosplaying.

Is rule #1 (anime, manga, and Japanese video game characters only) unbendable? Specifically the Japanese video game part. For instance, if someone wanted to cosplay Master Chief for chess, would they be disqualified because Halo isn't Japanese?

I would love to do my Team Fortress 2 engineer cosplay for cosplay chess, and, as far as I know, Kumoricon actually has Team Fortress 2 as one of the games in the gaming room, doesn't it?
So basically, does the character have to be from Japanese media? Or are characters from American video games okay?

It would be a hard costume to make up attacks for, but I'm sure I could think of some. And there is the issue that I want to wear Cloud for at least a little bit.....

But! I am doing Wedding Yuna this year, with a plan to keep the seven-foot long train in check. ^^ I'll be sure to sign up once more for this awesome event... with an ultra-special-secret-secret-special attack. *shifty-eyes*

And sorry, but no Pikachu summon this year...

Just need to wait for my nearly three-weeks later paycheck to get in before I can finish Yuna and get picks taken.

Yup, I like rather large costumes. The veil's gonna be difficult, though. I want a 12ft square piece of really sheer, but can't seem to find any. >.> Don't really want a seam, either.

Please try to keep this thread on topic as much as possible.. it has a tendency to get off-track quickly, and that makes it more difficult for me to answer your questions ;)

@ fleur_fraise:  Go ahead and submit your cosplay.  The preference is for Japanese video games, but as long as the cosplay is recognizable and well done, it can be considered. (iirc, we had a Zim the first year we did this, so rules are bendable).

@ bucker_stalker: You can, but if you are selected, and your cosplay doesn't look like the pic at con, you may be replaced.  It's better to send a pic of the actual cosplay, even if you have to submit closer to the deadline.

@ TinTin: The preference is for only one character at a time on the board, but I won't rule it out as a possibility.  It has happened before.

@ soundninja12:  That sounds like an awesome idea, but I already have an announcer for the match.  Roy, the same guy who did it last year, will be announcing again this year.

Oh if only you could do that this year, it would be supremely awesome, that it would be. If they got somebody else though, oh well...but, maybe you can see now if you can do it for NEXT year. ^^ Oh that would be sweet.

I'm finally going to sign-up ahead of time for the cosplay chess this year. :P After being able to get in for one of the matches at last Sakuracon I realize now how much fun it really is. ^_^  I'm going to sign up for it as my Kenshin Himura and my new cosplay this year, Renji Abarai! ^_^ Though I would prefer to do it in my Kenshin..if there is a 2nd game and time enough to change maybe I could do both..but, we'll see.

What I would really love is someone I could do a special attack with...like a Sanosuke combined attack. :P Ha ha. Would be great. There is a Sano I know would be perfect for the part..just need to find him. But, any other Kenshin cosplayers are welcome of course...or any other ideas are also welcome.


Is there a way when submitting a cosplay to say which costume would be your preference or would we just message or e-mail you Jamiche and let you know that way?

Okay probably not.

Anyways. :] I'm totally...not sure wtf I should go as because I have several cosplays that I can bring just for this event.

This year I'm going as Doctor Horrible, Roy Mustang, and Two-Face for This years con.

But I also have. American McGee's Alice. Sakura-Hime from Tsubasa. Sakura from Shippuden Naruto. Yachiru from Bleach. Jinx from Teen Titans. Riza from FullMetal Infinity Sakura from Tsubasa.

So if any of those sound nice D: I'm always up for suggestions?

Can I actually retract my Kuja entry? I will only cosplay Cloud that day I am not going to wear two on the last day. I'm sorry for making things more difficult ^_^;

i was getting ready to fill ou the form and it asks for your badge number, what if you dont know that yet?

I think it would be fun to do this for '09.  I missed out last year and was really bummed about it.
I'm good with just watching or being in it.  Here are the cosplays I'm bringing to the con with me:
- Haruhi Suzumiya (TMoHS) Winter uniform
- Tsuruya (TMoHS) Summer uniform
- Sailor Saturn (Sailor Moon)  Sailor uniform
Maybe - Bible Black (custom)  Purple uniform

Would any of those want to be considered?  I can also bring others:
- Rukia Kuchiki (either soul reeper or school girl)
- Misa Amane (black outfit)
- Tohru Honda (Summer uniform)
- Sakura Haruno (pre. shipp. and shipp. outfit)
- Naruto Uzumaki fem. (shipp.)
- Tsubasa Sakura (air uniform)
- Yuki Cross (night class uniform)

I'm trying to think of an attack for Sven, since I won't be able to make anything that actually comes out of his case...Though, I might make a hammer for my Eve and then she can be my attack!

All right, finally posting on this board! Once I finish the costume, I think I'll enter Irvine Kinneas from Final Fantasy 8. If there's any other FF8 characters that want to do something special (be a special attack, request to fight each other, etc), lemme know.

I would think No Face would be on the either side, just depends on which version you're doing. If you do him as the silent skinny one, then good, but I would think that the fact that you can "eat" people (which is awesome, btw), I would think you'd be better on the bad side.

And Renge would probably be good. It's more like Nekozawa type to be bad...

So, I'm applying as three people. Two of them I'll be applying as pieces, and the third as an attack ^^
Now, I just need to finish one and get pictures and send them out...

Ah, I think I had the same question at first on the application form. I believe the coordinator wants to know about the personality of your cosplay character, whether they are happy or angsty (a character that has alot of anxiety or apprehension or is dour/ depressed)

HMMMM,

I've been kind of iffy on either to sign-up or not, since all the characters I'm cosplaying are either not popular or dont have any special powers

I know for sure I'm gonna sign up to be an attacker cause my friend is entering as Sakura (from cardcaptors) and I'm gonna be the shadow card.

but for myself as a chess piece hmmm.

If you're gonna be an attack I don't think you can be a chess piece too, I'm pretty sure it's one or the other.

Okay, it's late, so I'm not going to go thru these individually.  I'll hit the highlights, and if I missed your question, sorry and please ask again.

Badge number - if you have it, great.  If not, submit without it, and it can be added later.  It's just a way for us to track identify you.

Kiki hitting with broom - um, no.  Same rules apply for weapons here, guys.  You can brandish, but no actual contact.  I really don't want to have to stop the game because someone is bleeding or unconscious.. it's such a downer.

You can enter multiple costumes (please, not more than 3), but please don't ask me to pick for you.  I have no way of knowing who is entering, so I can't help you fill out spots and such.  Just enter what you want to, and we will go from there.

While the preference is for completed pics of your cosplay, you can send an image in until you have them, kinda like a placeholder.  Word of warning, tho.. since this is based on your cosplay, if you are picked and your cosplay is incomplete or not a close enough match (and I am last say on that), you can/will be replaced.  Just an FYI.

If you are not in play (dead piece, or in the event of multiple matches, waiting), you can be both a piece and an attack.  And if you can convince me it's super cool, you can be an attack when you are in play...

It doesn't matter if you are a super popular character, or have a special attack.  Popular characters usually have multiple entries (and I typically don't have both characters on the board, unless it amuses me ;D), and I believe the first year a school girl killed a ninja (one again, it amused me.. seeing a theme? :D).  So if you want to enter, enter.  If your cosplay is awesome, odds are you will get chosen.

The questions on form about your character are so I can determine teams.. please fill those in to the best of your abilities.  It saves my time and yours.

Keep in mind... this is all in fun.  Strategically, it will most likely be the worst game of chess you have ever seen.  That's not the point.  The battles are the point.  The battles are unscripted... you never know what's gonna happen :D

Oh, if you have submitted a form, and haven't heard back from me.. wait until next week before you panic.  I'm working on finalizing the schedule, and that is priority (you guys have some time).

Btw, Nikki? No worries on dropping Kuja.

After thinking about it more, I'm thinking I'll enter my Matt cosplay from Digimon just for the heck of it.~ Since he doesn't really have a weapon maybe I could just drive my opponent away with terrible harmonica playing. xD Sooo close to being done with the costume and being able to send in a form!

Okay then! I won't have the feathers until next week, and I'm leaving for Idaho on Wednesday, so I'll have the base dress, veil, tiara, and everything BUT the feathers done by the end of Tuesday. I'll have to send in my app with just that, though. I'll have the wings base done! The only other thing is adding the feathers, which I need to wait to come. If they don't in time I'll jury-rig a couple boas, marabou, and attack my feather pillows. XD

And we decided what my friend's going to be as my attack! She... is... a... MOOGLE! XD

Sorry guys, I have been concentrating on the con schedule, and the due date slipped my radar.  I haven't had a chance to reply to any of the applications that have been sent in, so if you haven't heard anything, don't panic... no one has.  But I should be able to respond to all of them in the next couple of days, and I will post when I have gone thru them all.. that way, if you don't get an email, you know to resend.

And since I haven't had a chance to review anything, I'm going to leave sign-ups open to at least Weds, Aug 26. Plus, there haven't been as many entries as last year, so if you were still thinking about it, sign-up.

Keep in mind, when I get your form is not critical, it's your cosplay.  So, if for some reason I lost your application and you have to resend, it's not going to set you back on the list.

Oh, and on another note.. I'm still looking for chess masters.  Because you really, really don't want me to be the one making the moves :-X

I could be a chess master. I'm not that great of a strategist but I do tend to use all my pieces, which is really what you want in Cosplay chess

Also I could do it as Krosp from Girl Genius, he actually plays chess, and I'm cosplaying him.

Would that be a reason to reject my application?
Just because my attack didn't make it in?
Plus, I listed 2 attacks, and she was only one of them.
I do hope that this isn't as big of a problem as it is in my mind.

The attack isn't as critical as the piece is.. in fact, people have done their attacks last minute and brought to the pre-meet. so don't worry about it.

Like I said earlier, if you haven't heard anything yet, don't worry, because I still haven't responded to them yet ;)  But you will be hearing in the next day or so...

Okay, finally got all the form email replies out, so if you haven't heard from me, odds are I did not receive your application.

As of right now I have about 35 apps, and all the costumes look really good, so it will be a hard decision to make. :)  I will be posting the teams on the forums by next Monday, so I have some time to play with the teams a bit, see what I can shake out.

Remember, if we have enough time for second match (which there was last year) and interest in it, we can have one so all the alternates can play as well.

And I still need another chess master, so if anyone else is willing to step up, I would appreciate it.  Doesn't anyone want to take on Olivia? ;)

but the rules this year are you have to send a pic of you in costume, they won't accept a pic of your character.

Brotherhood is actually awesome, it glosses over some stuff from the manga, and bits that took some time in the original, but other than that it's great.

I'm not sure what room it will be in It will be in Live 1 and 2 on Monday from 12PM to 3PM (note, the pre-meet is 10:30AM to 12PM), hopefully what happened last year won't happen this year...being, that they simply ran out of room! I was in line to go see the chess but they not long after I got there had to turn away a sizable number of people as there just wasn't any room left for people to go in. Also of course they had to be sure there was enough room for the fights..so yeah, that was a bummer. 50~100 some people turned away I would say.

Likely, the same thing will happen again *chuckles* only because of the room size more people will be able to come in. It is after all the biggest event/show on the last day of the con I think that's not hard to agree on right? (Could be wrong though of course) I'm excited to see what the turn out will be as well as the match-ups. ^_^


Oh, has it been decided then on who the two Chess Masters will be? From what I read I think that's the case but I wanted to check. Loved chess for years and I'm okay at it..but wonderful at grabbing attention so it would work well. :P I'm not sure if the Chess Master (even if I wouldn't be able to be one, I'm still curious) is actually IN the game or not..don't know how it works for Kumoricon. At Sakuracon '09 I was lucky enough to get in on that in my Kenshin outfit (Lols, I replaced a Stormtrooper that didn't show up.  ;D ) and the 'King' was also the Chess Master. However those games were pre-decided before the start of the game, so I'm not quite sure...hm. Anyway, hopefully I can get some answers on that. ^_^

Should be fun. One way or another.

It's too late to send in a form, the teams are being announced tomorrow. BUT your best would be to show up at the Pre-meet, just in case someone doesn't show up and you can try to take their spot.

My guess on that would be no, but I'm not sure. From what I can tell they really want to see how the cosplay looks on you in particular.
