Title: Kumoricon Three Weeks Early: Take 2 (IMPORTANT UPDATE! 8/15/09)

Alright I did this last year and it was a lot of fun so I figured we can give it a shot again.

DATE: Sunday, August 16th

TIME: Noon

PLACE: Meet at Pioneer Square

We will not be going inside the hotel!

The plan:
Meet at Pioneer Square at noon
head over to Pioneer Place Mall around 1 or 1:30 for food
after food go over to the hotel block and give a little explanation
Head to the park for the mock battle run through.

So by this description I would plan on hanging out till about 5 pm if not latter. But for you younger people that need to tell their parents a time to be home 5 is a good estimate.

This seems fun~! And since I'm a noob when it comes to conventions(sadly), I'd like to get the feel of things, a month early!

I like being able to get a look around the hotel before going. It helps me find things faster when I am in a rush. It is also good to find food places around there and parks as well.

I can't go to this, I'm a brides maid in my brothers wedding. Man I really wanted to go to. I want to know where everything is and I wanted to see people. :< You guys all have fun there. it is a ways off though.

Well that is too bad.

Looking around the hotel can be very very helpful. It will also get people who are driving familiar with the place.

It happened last year. I remember one in particular. We found a double-tier table and a bunch of people (Nikkiolie included) piled onto (and into) it to get pictures taken. Tom also took a couple shots of Kahlan and I as Barret and Rinoa switching weapons (thus the sig-pic).

So, yeah, I think cosplay pics are definitely going to happen at some point during the tour, heh.

Doesn't seem more spacious than last year's hotel? That was one of my main problems with the Double Tree, it was just so small.

Kinda....you have to take escalators to get to all the rooms and those are very narrow. I think you couldn't have two people standing next to each other. So that area is going to be pretty crowded but if I remember correctly there is a large open space outside of the main rooms....but I could be mistaken. I guess we will find out when the time comes ;D

Nice, I remember the staircase from one of Tom's pictures. I knew right then it would be used for a ton of shoots, if staff allow people to stop there.

when Pein and I were in portland the other day with Naru and peacock Sasu we as in Pein and I went inside, it's nice but a little small, but that's as far as we got. We were in cosplay for the hell of it. But that's as far as we got was past the front door

Yeah, the stairs are really extravagant and over the top. In my opinion, it's really beautiful, I like the hilton better than double tree. It's certanly larger and I hope that it dosen't get too crowded like last year

You could do normal clothes and just use a plain black zip up hoodie and make your own beads. It isn't too hard.

EDIT: I thought of some other things....
Don't jaywalk, there's cops hiding all over downtown now waiting to give you a $200 ticket. Kumoricon doesn't need that kind of reputation, Kumoricon needs your money!  ;)

Don't bring the giant Lavi hammers. Believe me when I say that the upstairs is cramped. we will be going through areas that the hammer cannot pass. unless you want to have somebody guard it in the lobby during the tour leave it at home.
I do suggest bringing something as WIDE as the hammer on one face, like a giant piece of cardboard you can fold up. that way you can practice moving something that size through the entryways and you'll know where you can and can't go.

Yeah, that'd definitely be asking for trouble. I had figured Pioneer Square would be packed, even without the holiday encouragement.

Definitely think a shady park would be better for the Mock-Battle, there's even a little court part of the Park Blocks with a statue/arch that could be nice for photos.

All can be sorted out during the pre-con of course.

I found something to do :P I still need to style the wig for kuja. The back is done and I am working on the front right now. Please remember the Hotel is not a public space and their main business comes from doing weddings and Business functions there which we do not want to interrupt.
 This is a good idea and I'm glad people are excited about con, but we also have to show the hotel our best side as Con goers, I think a mob of cosplayers showing up early and unexpectedly might freak the hotel staff out a bit.
 I will be asking around for the best way to make this happen, but for now I ask for your patience and understanding.

Yeah, there was a tour of the hotel, food at the Lloyd Center food court, Ice Skating at the Rink, Photos all over the place (including the entrance to the Pirate store...they loved that, lol). It was crazy fun.

I talked with David and he still needs to talk with the hotel but our plan at this time is to have a walk through at the hotel on both of our August meeting dates(9th and 22nd I believe). This is not finalized yet but is our plan.

Guys,

This is the sort of thing that has the potential to create problems for us with the hotel.  The Doubletree was not happy about early con last year.  However, we were not in a situation with them where we needed to worry about working with them again and/or making future contracts.  We are in that positon with the Downtown Hilton.

The Downtown Hilton usualy books lots of really formal events like weddings.  You guys are talking about crashing space that is rented by someone else, in a highly visible group of about 30 people.  We are working with the hotel to try to have walkthroughs on meeting days.  If you guys really want to tour the hotel, please do it when we have made arrangements to do so.   

Obviously, we can't stop you.  But, if you do anything to sour our relationship with the hotel, the whole convention can be affected.  The more they like working with us, the more concessions and other things we get from them.  If they have reasons to not like working with us ... then they will only do so in the future for more money. 

When the hotel is ours, because it's during the times when WE have rented it, we can do all sorts of stuff.  We can have our fun then.  When OTHER people have paid good money for the space, it's thiers.  Touring the general area of the hotel is fine. But please, think carefully about entering private property. 

This is likely the last you are going to hear from the Kcon Board about it.  It's your choice.  I just wanted to make sure you guys understood the possible implications. 

Thanks for reading:)  In general, how well behaved our attendees are and the lack of complaints actually surprises the hotels and other venues we work with.  Also, those of us who work on the con all year long really, really appriciate what a good group of attendees we have.  If you guys weren't so awesome, running the show would not be nearly as rewarding.

Ah, well I don't think anyone involved in these plans (the unofficial walkthrough) had any idea that there was problems with the walkthrough last year. Nobody mentioned anything to us about it until now, a year later. It's good to know, and thanks for letting us know. In that respect, I can understand not going through with it. We can maybe do all the other events (just not a walk through the hotel).

I'm just surprised. I would have thought if it was such a problem and the hotel had such an issue with it, someone would have mentioned something by now. We were all left in the dark about it, apparently.

Last year we did not go into any of the room (all of them were locked) Tom just showed us where they were. But I guess for this we can just tour AROUND the hotel instead of going inside so people know where things are and wait for the actual tour on one of the meeting days.

I don't think that would be a safe bet to make. There are too many people on these forums that are way to immature. If we did go through the hotel it would be quick and not a lot of stops.

I took a couple of videos yesterday that should help everyone find the hotel. I also made a video with the last little bits of the hotel that people might be curious about.

They are horrible, so I haven't put them online yet. However, they should help people deal with a lack of hotel touring at this event.

I think the stairwells there would actually be a great place for cosplay shots, but it's probably not okay to stand around on the stairs and take pictures. x3
Oh well, the rest of the hotel is pretty and great for shots aswell.~~
(Oh, and why would you need a T.V  in the elevator? D'= Seems like a little bit of a waste of money to me. >>)

I have another Update! Since we are not going to be touring the hotel and there is only a small sidewalk to stand on outside we are going to meet at Pioneer Square, walk over to the hotel and then to the park blocks from there.

Alright my bad I found that mistake but it was just the date I made the update.

Also on the first post it says we are meeting at pioneer square, we are going to look at places around the hotel but not go in it.

Ok I edited the first post to help get rid of some confusion. But I want to strongly stress that we are not going inside the Hotel because last time people were running around and screaming and that pissed the staff off. Since we need this Hotel for one more year we want to be on good terms. And sadly there are way too many immature people that seems to come to meet ups.

Oh man, the first showing is at 1pm! I'll have to get the tickets before hand and then head over right after I meet you guys.

This is gonna be complicated.
I really don't wanna miss out because there's some key info I wanted to hand over/show you guys. Even if we don't go inside the hotel I want you all to see how the reg line up will go and the sweetness that is the park blocks.

I won't be there at all. We're gonna relax out in Beaverton on Sunday. I can tell ya the important stuff on here, but you'll have to print out the Small Area Map  (http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t16/TomtheFanboy/Kumoricon%202009/2009_small_area_03.png) and the Key (http://pockyclub.elite-otaku.net/SmallMapKey.rtf) yourselves. I'll put them all in this post after the next section.

The main thing I wanted to show everyone, so they could spread the word, was where the reg line is going to be. We are going to have people line up at the BACK door of the hotel on 6th avenue. From there everyone will file in, go up the escalators/stairs (or the elevator with a staff member for those in wheel chairs) and straight across to the Live Events room where there will be a large set of ropes set up for the line to serpentine through. Then at the other end of the room they'll exit out onto the foyerwhere the reg desks will be. right after the badge and swag the attendees will pass the peacebond booth and let the yojimbo check their props. I have drawn this diagram up to try and make it more clear.

Remember there is still a curfew for minors, the hotel asks us not hang out in the lobby late at night, and the only rooms that are open the FULL 24 hours are the viewing rooms. Gaming closes from 6am-8am to recharge batteries (literally, LOL).


Oh and the yojimbo inspection is just standard procedure, the yojimbo usually hang around the front doors and keep an eye on the line casually. We're just making it an official part of registration now. Now you'll know where to go each time you bring out a new costume and need another set of peacebonds for your plastic knife collection.

Alright so here is the plan so far for tomorrow. We are going to meet at pioneer Square at noon. We will probably hang out there till about one waiting for late comers, from there we will head to the mall to get some food. After eating and what not we can go past the hotel, give a little description on what is around it and how the lines will work from the outside of the hotel and then move on to the park were we will probably spend the rest of the time. We will go through the mock battle (I really don't know how long that will take) and people can take pictures or go off and do their own thing.

But that is what I have in mind so far.

I wanted to say, the open chest method doesn't look good for just binding, it still looks like I have boobs if I have a normal shirt on. All it does really is get rid ov cleavage so you can wear a low cut shirt.

I just woke up, so I don't think we'll be going. Wes was a little bummed about not having a costume, and we're flat broke.

Well shoot, I went to the Kc group meeting today, except that I looked at the calendar wrong and there WAS NO MEETING.  While that made me sad, whats worse, I even ventured to half the places you guys were at but didn't know this meet up was happening :*(   Oh well, hope everyone had a good time.  Guess I should read the forums more.

That's my mindset completely (if I still grew my hair out, that is). Now I just go for characters that have cropped/shaved heads. There are some big-hair characters I plan to do down the road, but maybe by then I will have more experience with wigs. For now, though, no thanks, lol

Yeah, it is impressive that people can have so many, but I would never want that many in a year for myself. I usually never do more than one new cosplay in a year. I like to bring one old cosplay and one new cosplay to Kumoricon every year. That's my rotation cycle, heh

well one positive thing that came from this is that I figured out what I need to do with my kuja costume to make sure that it is con ready. The main thing is to find a way for the back train part to stay up. It shouldn't be too hard and will be something to work on this week.

Also I need someone to take pictures with a better camera XD Well I have a photo shoot with Jail Break Designs (Zombie face on the forums) for each of my costumes so I will have better pictures after the con ;D

The couple that was in there, asked to get a group shot with the cosplayers.
Then there was the random bicyclist, who stopped to be in the picture. XD

Dana - Aaah, you photo'd me being an absolute dork, thank you! XD <3 Not everyday I get my picture taken at a con-event when I'm out of cosplay.

I like everyone else's pictures. I think I need to get my lense cleaned or something because everything comes out fuzzy-ish now, it didn't used to do that. ^^;
