I've been hearing murmurs about Mewcon from everyone and I'm curious about it. I might be at my mom's in Vanouver during winter break, so it's totally a possibility that I could go ;D Anyone else have information, or planning to go?
-
I preregistered at Kumoricon. It sounds fun. :)
-
The website is here (http://www.mewcon.com/). It takes place December 31st through January 1st, and it is in Vancouver, WA.
There will be events similar to Kumoricon's: anime viewings, gaming, contests (I'm sure). Also, A-Key Kyo and The Slants will both be playing there.
I haven't registered yet but I plan to do so and attend. It sounds very fun.
-
Oh sweet sauce. It looks like it's in it's first year, I think I'll probably be there with my little sister :) I imagine a bunch of KCon veterans will be there, I'm getting pretty excited for it already : D
-
I think I'll be with my dad that week! I'll think about going.
-
^ If you do go I hope I don't miss out on getting pictures of you like I did this past weekend, heh.
-
Sweet! I'll be with my mom, since it'll be during winter break! Yay convenience!
Oh and I made an account on the mewcon forums, they're pretty nice, but it's disorienting since I'm so used to these ones :D
-
It's not just an anime convention; it's for sci-fi and fantasy too, so in addition to anime, there will be a viewing room which will prob'ly have movies playing.
It also means a potentially wider array of costumes~ :D
-
That's really cool, I'm totally set on going to this ;D
I'm thinking maybe at Mewcon we could have a KCon meetup, so everyone who's been to KCon this year can see everyone all over again. I know I miss all the friends I made at KCon already <3
-
Oh yeah, Sci-Fi and Fantasy too. Hmm, I may try to get the Hellboy done for this then. *scratches chin* Hmmm....
-
I'm hoping that the wider variety of content might let me persuade my boyfriend to come to this with me; he collected Star Wars figurines as a kid.
-
I'm going. So are you.
-
I am going, and I hope to see you all there!
-
My group is going! :D
See you all there!
-
YAY!!! Now I'm even more excited!!! I keep accidentally thinking of this as "Meowcon" though XD
-
I first thought of it as μcon. >.>
-
yeah im really curious about it. the site is well put together but somewhat lacking in information i feel. guess ill just have to go!
-
Yaaay =3
I'm going aswell.
So excited~
-
yeah im really curious about it. the site is well put together but somewhat lacking in information i feel. guess ill just have to go!
For me, the site was kind of the opposite. Cheap white background, little image on the left, but all the info's there. ^_^
-
mmmm man another con i'm really tempted i'll see what goes on *toils fox tail*
-
You should go. =3
Being at a Con on New Years is epic.
-
It'll be the best New Year's party ever. :D
-
I've never been one to party on New Year's, but this would certainly be reason to, heh. I'd boogie til I broke in half haha.
-
Spending New Years with a bunch of cosplayers would be amazing.
I am officially excited.
-
I think it's a brilliant idea. My friends and I talked about how cool it would to have one on New Years and viola! Years later, there's a con!
-
I first thought of it as μcon. >.>
Hehehe. . . you're not the only one who's had that thought. I'm going to use that somewhere at the con; I haven't figured out where but SOMEWHERE. :D
I'm running gaming; feel free to sign up as game room staff if you love me; I swear I won't ever leave or become intoxicated!
-
I first thought of it as μcon. >.>
Hehehe. . . you're not the only one who's had that thought. I'm going to use that somewhere at the con; I haven't figured out where but SOMEWHERE. :D
No doubt! (*has been to Greece*)
Although in Greece it has the numeric value of 40, it is the *12th* letter of the Greek alphabet.
This is a *New Year's Eve* party, i.e., the most important time to mark and celebrate will be *12 am.*
(Also per wikipedia in Christianity it's used as the middle point between alpha and omega, so another logical twist for marking midnight with it.)
I do not know if alcohol will be allowed at the party (but I imagine those of age can at least drink in their hotel rooms). Might be appropriate to toast with a *micro* brew, since most who know of mu know it as a symbol for the prefix "micro".
Meantime given that this con also ties in sci fi and fantasy, those obsessed with Lost
*ahem*
*blushes*
*watches eps on the abc site obsessively*
may know that
"Typing the numbers (4,8,15,16,23,42) from the fictional TV series Lost resulted in the character "µ". In Microsoft Windows, holding down the "Alt" key while entering these numbers results in the character appearing wherever your cursor is (though the 4 and 8 are superfluous). (this does not work in XP or later OS versions)" (per Wikipedia).
Then of course there is that mu is also used to denote the
"Standard gravitational parameter of a celestial body, the product of the gravitational constant G and the mass M." (per Wikipedia).
(Most wouldn't know this, but a long-time friend of mine researches gravity at U of O at a PhD level....)
So it would be appropriate (if 18+)to watch Gravitation LOL!
-
I was thinking it was just μcon because it's only two days instead of five (yes, us yojimbo work hard!)
-
I'll be going to Mewcon; I pre regged at kcon :)
-
yeah im really curious about it. the site is well put together but somewhat lacking in information i feel. guess ill just have to go!
For me, the site was kind of the opposite. Cheap white background, little image on the left, but all the info's there. ^_^
i didnt think it was particularly pretty but it was straight forward. ive seen some asswackward websites where i felt that they were trying to hid info from me, i thought the site was easy to maneuver.
-
I kind of like the forums, but they're slightly disorienting XD I couldn't find any info on panels or whatnot for Mewcon though, I looked too!
-
People don't really go on the forums....lol
-
I go on the forums all the time. There aren't any information for panels because we haven't come up with a whole lot. There are a few things that we're planning to have, I think. Just ask on the forums about anything you want to know.
Post on the forums and people will follow!
-
I joined the forums. :) yay
-
Me and my Death Note group from K-con are all going!! Or we hope to!! It's pretty cheap for a hotel room there too O_o
I am SO excited!!!!!
-
Im going, also on the mewcon forums though I havent posted. I do like how cheap the hotel rates are.
-
I'll probably end up helping to staff the event as well, most likely.
-
I wanna go, but right now im kind of iffy on money and I've never been to another con besides Kumoricon before so I'm not sure, I kind of wanted to save and see if I could go to Fanime in 2009 as well.
-
hah my phone messed up and gave me this, come spend mew years at mew con XD
-
hah my phone messed up and gave me this, come spend mew years at mew con XD
Heh, Nice
I'm planing on going just need to make sure I can get the time off work.
-
There is a bar on-sight where all drinking will occur. I'm going to be working hard to try to have close-circuit TV's set up in Gaming, the bar, and the lobby hooked up to be viewing main events so nobody misses out on the celebrations. :]
-
Sweet! I'm really looking forward to this.
-
hopefully I can make it to mewcon. There's another con in it's first year called Aki-con, it's in Everett though so there might be more people from sakura con going to that one instead of Kcon. Lucky me, I live just about the same distance from all of them, hurray for four hour drives to cons!!!
-
Think I might go
-
Will be there for sure
Awesome.
-
Waffles! Yeah!
I will be there too ;) I'm staff!
-
I just checked my calendar at work and those days are booked solid. :( So, I know I'll have to work those days. I might come out to hang out with everyone after work though.
-
Waffles! Yeah!
I will be there too ;) I'm staff!
ORLY? What's your username on MEW forums? I haven't seen you there yet.
-
Oh man I wish I could go! But with my tiny income I highly doubt I would be able to afford it. xD Oh well. I hope you all have fun there. ;D
-
Shouldn't be hard to afford. Just put aside $50 and pre-register ASAP. It's only one night so no exorbitant hotel fees.
-
Depending on how many nights you consider con nights ;) pre reg night is the 30th, new years eve 31st, and it ends midnight the second day so three nights for those of us heavy con goers...
but yeah, if you're on a budget as far as cons go its a pretty inexpensive one, especially if you came for both days and only split a room with someone for the main night :D
-
I think I'm staying two nights.
-

They make you work on holidays?
eww
-
I want to make this as cheap as possible for me. So I have to find 2 other people to stay with XD
Nevermind. It's been fixed
-
So now I'm in if my friend goes with me.
Hopefully if she says yes we can find 2 more people to make room cheaper.
-
Did you all see the cost for a room if you get it at the MEWcon discount? It's friggin $70 a night! For a single! That's ridiculously amazing!
-
OH SNAP
I love con discounts
omg
-
Did you all see the cost for a room if you get it at the MEWcon discount? It's friggin $70 a night! For a single! That's ridiculously amazing!
Yeah... how did they do that? That's way cheap O.o
Mewcon has mad skillz.
-
No kidding....I'm like "how can we get Kumoricon to get those kind of discounts?" lol
-
Dey has sum mad skillz.
I wonder how they got those discounts?
-
Maybe its a special discount for "services" rendered.
-
Too bad I don't need a hotel for Mewcon! Those deals are insane!
-
$10 says I'm drinking VISO instead of sleeping throughout this convention. I can pull an 80-hour shift EASY if I'm working with video games the whole time. Not going to bother with a hotel room; 90% of my luggage will be set up in the game room the whole time anyway. :D
-
wowza! :o
-

Are you even allowed to do that?
-
No con curfew and the fact that I DON'T CARE I'LL BE 18 IN, LIKE, A COUPLE WEEKS AFTER THE CON says yes. :<
Mah con schedule:
day prior: wake up bright and early, around 8ish. Grab my pre-packed everything, confirm everything with any sponsors or suppliers I have, and catch my ride. Get everything set up and hope that at least 2 (preferably 20) other people show up to help me run the game room
day 1: 24 hours of fun! Well, probably 16, but I don't intend to sleep on the night of setup when there is a room full of video games that I have full access to. . .
COUNTDOWN: run an exciting awesome cool something in conjunction with whatever they're doing in Main Events.
day 2: 24 MORE hours of fun! (we're at 64 now)
party hard, then clean up - figure it'll be 12-20 hours later before I get home and pass out. :]
For the record. . .
My longest non-stop run without sleep was 108 hours.
I slept about 3 hours between 10am friday and midnight Monday for Kumoricon. IT WAS FANTASTIC! O,o
I sap energy from others. As long as people are running around having a great time, I have energy to run off of. I'll start trippin' and flippin' out of things gets calm though.
-
Man. I could never stay up that long. o__o;;
-
I plan on going. I want my parents to pay for it as a Christmas present ^_^
-
108 hours...holy shizz that's almost 5 days D:
-
108 hrs. :o
I need sleep or I'll go berserk... or, you know, delusional...
It's all good, so long as I catch a few Z's. Man, I love me some naps.
-
Oh man. Now I'm totally excited about this!!
I still haven't decided whether to go or not. . . As tempting as it sounds. . .
I mean, first Sakuracon, Kumoricon, Akicon, then Mewcon! Four cons in one year! Holy crap! @.@ I'm gonna be poor by the end of this year! *does not have a job* >.<;;;;;
Meh. I don't know. I may or may not go. If it wasn't for the money, I'd so go. And I really want to! Waaa! DX
-
My buddy ghudda stayed up for 5 days just at his comp mostly he then passed out watching a movie
-

That's sort of how it was for me during the 108 hour run. I just posted on spam forums 80% of the time. Then I ran into a bed and slept for 5 hours, then got up at 7am and didn't sleep again for 3 days.
-
just registered eve-fiance and i the other day, weeeeeeeeeeeeee ^.^ *is super excited*
-
I am most likely going, hope the boss okays my vacation soon so I can get a room while there are still some left....
-
Yup, Kahlan and I are registered so now we just need to get a room. Hopefully they aren't all gone yet. And yay for some New Years Ninja Nonsense! (We'll be in our NN cosplay, I'm sure.)
-
Haha, I sure *hope* that the rooms aren't filled up. We're having a meeting on the 21st/23rd of the people staying in our room, and if we are in fact, all staying together. I wonder if it would hurt to just book at least one room before then...
-
Couldn't be a bad idea. If you book a room and then later want two but they get filled, at least you will have one room. You can fit people into one room, but you can't fit people into no rooms if you don't have any, lol.
-
Sadly me and my sister shall not be able to have our NN cosplay done by Mewcon. But I hope you and your wifey-to-be have fun! :3
-
I'm really hoping I can go with my DN group! =D My b-day is also in December, so it could be a celebration too. PARTY TEIM!
-
how old will you be turning?
-

Neat. Mine's on the 27th!
What a nice present for being a December baby, eh? xP
-

Ah, well you two are still going to MEWcon, right? ^_^
-
I booked my room long ago; I call it "Console Gaming". :D
-
MMMmmmm hmmmm, maybe you should get some real sleep in a staff room too for a little tiny bit. You cannot run tournies if your deadz, lol.
-
Don't you know? Tofu is a mysterious creature. He has actually found a way to convert the flashing lights of a DDR screen into pure energy! He doesn't need any other form of sustenance (except Viso which initiates the conversion chain reaction in his system). Viso and flashing lights = complete existence-support for DancingTofu.

Don't forget the occasional bum buddy.
Anyway...does anyone have an estimate on attendees?
-
I hope I can make it to mewcon, I should be moving to Tacoma in October, yay for a city that actually has jobs for me to get!

My personal estimate is 500-900. Unlike Kumoricon, we're starting in a large Urban center, and piggybacking off an existing subculture. Kumoricon saw a growth of 230% when moving from Eugene to Portland. I think that by starting in Portland, we will see an attendance at least twice that of Kumoricon's first year.
-
I might book a room right now, but I have a few questions (I've never done this before...):
- How many days are you staying? Which days are those?
Our group was thinking about two nights, maybe 30th and 31st? :/
- Did you book online or through the phone?
There's a place to put in a convention code for discount on the hotel site, but there's not a specific code I know of.
edit:
There's so many different rooms...maybe I'll just get the cheapest.

I'm staying three nights but then again I don't want to go home at midnight after the dance on the last day... and I'm staff so going home might not be an option anyway... but its up to you really how long you want to stay for the second day/night, depending on when you play to leave would effect weather or not you want that last night of hotel or your own bed!

The online code is 091230ME
I booked online through technically I called the hotel too to make sure it went through... I'm paraniod that way.
Hope that helps :D
-
Thank you very much! :)
-
how old will you be turning?
18! =D
Neat. Mine's on the 27th!

Awesome!!!! >w< Yes a nice present indeed!
-
yay i just booked our room!! * thanks to darkerlight for posting the code ^.^ *
-
I just realized it will be my birthday three days after MEWcon. Wow, I should do something during the con! *thinks*
-
yay i just booked our room!! * thanks to darkerlight for posting the code ^.^ *
I'm just curious, but how many nights are you guys staying?
-
I actually don't know, lol, but I think two nights.
Kahlan knows though, obviously.
-

Consume alcoholic beverages.
My birthday is also fairly soon after the con. :P Gonna suck when I'm 20 going on 21 and just barely too young to get totally drunk while playing DDR.
-
lol, Ah, I'll have something to drink, certainly. I will be 22, so I've had a full year of being able to drink legally by then, but the sentiments are all the same, heh.
I aim to have some true absinthe in my possession by then, so you know what I'll be doing, haha.
-
I know. I've mentally catalogued the ages of half the people on these forums. :P
-
I wonder how the countdown is going to work. Are we all going to have drinks and clink at the end? or kiss the person next to us? lol. So many traditions.
-
Just a heads up, 97% chance I will kiss the nearest person to me at Midnight. That hopefully won't be Laharlsama, but he's actually more likely to be the nearest person to me than anyone else. Hmm. :/
-
I'll kiss one person and then I'll clink glasses with everyone else, and give high fives, low fives, west wings, throw a hat, throw a person.....whatever people feel like doing, lol.
-
lol@ throw a person
sparkling cider, if I can't get alcohol!
-
Unless you get something really off-the-wall, sparkling cider is actually better, in my opinion. I don't like wine or champagne, so I would most likely be drinking some martinelli's on new year's, unless (like I said) I'd have something really crazy to drink, lol.
-
Actually, the only wine I've tasted (da rentz were there it's cool) that was better than sparkling cider was some wine my dad made. Probably just tasted good for psychological reasons, but it was pretty neat tasting wine that had come from my back yard.
I'll probably have 20-50 bottles of Martinelli's with me at all times during the con. I drink that stuff like oxygen.
-
yay i just booked our room!! * thanks to darkerlight for posting the code ^.^ *
I'm just curious, but how many nights are you guys staying?
i got the room for check in on december 30 and check out on january 1.
and yay sparkling cider!! though something alcoholic would be fun, sparkling cider is delicious >.O
-
Ah, we're going down for pre-reg, gotcha. ^_^ It'll be another party, and not with nearly as much crap to haul around! lol (for me anyway)
-
Alright, I might book those nights too. It kinda sucks making decisions when I'm not the ones driving to and from there...hm.
-

:P Yeah, maybe talk to the ones driving? :D at least reservations can always be changed to have less so I guess its better to book more and then change your mind then book less and not be able to later. LOL.
-
I'm most likly not going >>
I mean why does it HAVE to be on new years...
Time to be with family -_-
Bad day to be messed with man...
I remember my new years...though I shouldn't...
-
Yeah that can be a time where a lot of people can't go
As for me I at least know I ca go for one day...not sure if I'll have the other off work (I doubt it)
-

I remember my new years...though I shouldn't...
New Years, Christmas, and all holidays that I can think of have parades, festivals, parties, and fairs. Tradition is whatever you make of it, whatever is important to you and your family. K-Con started on Thanksgiving, a little more of a family holiday then New Years but it was still a great way to celebrate it. You could bring your family to MEW if they like that sort of thing, btw, traditions don't have to end with the ball dropping.
-
Going to miss most of the first day (work and all) but I'll be there for the count and for the second day :D
-
I wonder if there will be some theme-specific variant on the "ball drop" at MEWcon. Like, "let's all get together and watch the pokeball drop!" or "Come on, it's almost time to count the Pac-man down!" lol
-

omg the pac-man would be awesome! it could be going down eating little white balls that represented the seconds being counted down... *pictures in head* amazing! lol, i wish that was possible
-
Oh, it's totally possible. We should do it. ^_^
-
If you do it, you guys will forever be my heroes.
-
Omg I would LOVE to see that!
Have Styrofoam balls for pac-man to eat XD
-
That would be really epic.....But how would you do it?
-
Well you could do it with LED lights I suppose. Have a big pacman eating the dots down, until it reaches the bottom, where a ghost is waiting, and then pacman dies.... but then a new pac-man appears to signify the new year!
-
that would be EPIC! XD
-
Yeah, we have a few ideas we're tossing around, but really we have no clue how we could do it yet. LED would be the best way (but I know nothing at all about that stuff).
-
If I was still an Electrical Engineer I could suggest some stuff or even do it.....but the math was too hard and now I am a psych major ;D
-
The fact that you even knew anything about that at one point is impressive. And Psych is crushingly difficult for me to get my mind around also, lol.
-
I made a little LED thingy during my first term but I had no idea what I was doing XD (one reason I left)
But I love psych....it seems to come really natural to me.
others can help make pacman and I will analyze him XD
-
Sounds good. I'll keep thinking over the options, but I am liking the idea of LED, if anyone else knows about it and could help.
-
I wish I could go, I have a big new years eve party with my friends every year (since we dont go to school with eachother its one of the few times we all get together) and I cant miss it ;.; if it ever changes its date I may attend.
-
Well I am bet I will have to work one day....not sure when it is going to close New Years Eve....it might close early so I can make it to the countdown....I hope
-
I'm gonna get on the forums for Mewcon now o-o
-
I'm gonna get on the forums for Mewcon now o-o
I see you! :D dual forum Sugarlat!
-
Im down for Mewcon, aside form that im also going to Aki-Con!
-
The Pacman idea sounds bomb. It could also be animated if LED is too difficult. but it should totally happen.
-
I'll actually consider it. I want something clever and gaming-themed for the Game Room count down, since we will be operating at the time. I'm not sure where I'd start as far as setting that up; I can do lighting and stuff but not timed lighting. :/
-
You just have to give me credit for the idea...or Bawls. ;D
-
I'm gonna get on the forums for Mewcon now o-o
I see you! :D dual forum Sugarlat!
Actually I'm sugarlat on other forums too o-o
I should change it to Kotoko1223 >> But peoples calls meh Sugah XD
I likies
-
Mewcon forums are like a deep abyss of emptiness :D

How about both?

Sounds like a dealio. ^_^

It would be easier to use a projector and have someone animate that scene with your 30 sec time drop sync. You would only need a projector and a laptop that way. If you really want to use LEDs low res panels can be programmed using a conventional theatre style board with 1 second autofollow cues setting up a matrix for ease of programming. You could also use conventional lighting with Gobos and gellframes although depends on how many fixtures in your inventory and how animated you want your pac-man chomper to be. It would be possible to arrange a elipsodal with a dual gobo rotator with wedge shaped gobos to simulate your packman. Having one gobo with an open mouth static and having another with 1/8 wedges removed to be his mouth opening and closing. Gell it yellow and instant pac-man theatre style.
Good luck with your show.
-
Is there a place on the forums to start photo shoot meet-ups?
The forums throw me off a little compared to kumoricon's and Sakuracon's (Which I never go on btw pfft).
-
Just joined the forums! =D My username is the same as here. But dang, the forums sure are confusing. DD:
-
I also registered....same name ^_^

Seconded. I'm so used to the bountiful KCon forums that the Mewcon ones simply boggle my mind @_@
-
its really not that confusing.....>_> I think it is very easy to get around ;D
-
You adapt far easier than I :D

The forums seem so dead.. We gotta speed things up a bit! =3

yeah,.....though I did notice that most of the people on the forum were on this forum as well... >_>

Good luck with your show.
projector idea is great! thanks ^.^ all the other stuff you said sounds awesome, but i don't understand any of it... lol. the projector seems like the easiest and best way, so maybe we'll go that route
-
Is there a place on the forums to start photo shoot meet-ups?
The forums throw me off a little compared to kumoricon's and Sakuracon's (Which I never go on btw pfft).
Panels and Events would be a good place to start.
Pac-Man
It would be really simple to use a projector and just flash or .gif animate it, but it would have a lot less novelty to it that way. A big light-board would be a really neat thing to have that we could set up and take down and re-use every year.
I want to figure out the timing settings for PacMan if we do use a projector, because if we use a projector, it's going to be a legit PacMan map which will be systematically cleared in 20 seconds, and PacMan will eat a ghost for 5, 4, 3, and 2, then eat a fruit at 1, then clear the map at 0
It would require some research, but if I can't do the LED, I can definitely do it with a projector.
-
Just joined the forums! =D My username is the same as here. But dang, the forums sure are confusing. DD:
LOL! I think someone up there heard you. They were talking about doing site overhauls and today I logged in to ...some very nice rearranging. It was surreal.
-
I don't like it how on MC forums the admin's names are... Admin. Is Admin one person or are they composed of 100 robot followers? xD
-
I need to check this out now...
-
You weren't already planning to go to MEW? I thought you were.
-
I meant the forum....yeah I am going to try to go to Mew con but I really don't want to ask for the 31st of.....maybe I will. I think I could get away with it ;D
-
Ah, gotcha. ^_^ Well good luck getting the time off. There's space for you to crash or stay if you end up needing to or wanting to stay at the hotel for the entire con.
-
o.o ...i may take you up on that
do you have an idea of how much it will cost?
-
I have no idea, Kahlan booked the room, but I'll find out today and let you know.
-
alright. I think I might be up for it but I'm not sure yet...Maybe the whole thing might be my Christmas present and i will only have to pay for stuff I buy at the con >_>
-
So gonna try to make it!!! ;D
-
Woot! It shall be so much fun! My sister and I get to stay until it's curfew, does anyone know when it is for Mewcon?
-
I don't like it how on MC forums the admin's names are... Admin. Is Admin one person or are they composed of 100 robot followers? xD
Admin is one person. There are other forum admins that have their own forum names and a positions of admin but the forum name "Admin" is the con's chair.
-
Ah okay. I wonder who Admin is behind the mask :D
-
Ahoy maties, Mew forums have gone piratey in honor of International speak like a pirate day... it is a cool theme to see in action, wonder what they will do during the con! lol.
-
That was so cool! I love Mewcon's pirate spirit!
-
Ahoy. I be sad though. Talk like ye pirate day is over. I will miss that piratey dialouge.
-
Ahoy. I be sad though. Talk like ye pirate day is over. I will miss that piratey dialouge.
I will miss it too :( There is a ship restraunt at mew though so if we get enough pirate could we not rekindle the pirate spirit? I want to here yo-ho-and a bottle of ramune echoing through the halls :D that would make my day!
-
Orly? That would be amazing. I bet they have piratey food. -Ponders-
-
Everything there is quite Nautical. Just check out the hotel fact sheets.
-
Yay, pirate food! I am gonna aim to update my casual pirate outfit to a full one for MEW. I already have the jewelry (Speaking of which if anyone wants pirate/gypsy-esque bracelets for pirate costumes or wear, I be making and selling them, just get a hold of me.) ^_^
-
We could have a VERY epic pirates vs. ninjas... just need to find some ninjas whilling to take on pirates on their own ship!
-
It would be an uphill fight for ninjas. I think Pirates vs. Zombies might be a closer fight.
-
Darkerlight: Hi sweetie, I PM'd you a while back (let me know if you didn't get it, it's in my outbox, I'll send again). Please reply when you have time. Basically I need to know if you are still interested in there being some form of Creation Station and/or comparable programming run by our crew, at M.E.W.? And some specific questions thereabout as asked in the PM. Love you! Miss you! Remy.
-
Definately a form of creation station, PM'd you back :D
-
It would be an uphill fight for ninjas. I think Pirates vs. Zombies might be a closer fight.
I'm up for a fight! Let's attack the pirates in there own layer!
Isn't that what a good ninja does anyway? ;)
-
Pirates will always win ;D
I'm super excited for Mewcon now. It's nice having a con soonly after Kumoricon, it helps make the wait go faster : D And I think my friend Colleen can come to this! YAY!
-
i plan on going to it ^^
-
i've just gotten the go ahead for it. i'll be there.
-
I'll be representing the Lumberjacks.
-
Update: totally going now.
-
Update: totally going now.
Were the Lumberjacks the deciding factor? ;P
-
Update: totally going now.
Were the Lumberjacks the deciding factor? ;P
Maybe... Truth is I got all that done about two weeks ago but I was just too lazy to post that in this thread until now, plus it is the first con I will go to with me cosplaying so that will be cool.
-
Waaah me and Shay still need to pre-reg for this!
-
Definately a form of creation station, PM'd you back :D
Super awesomeness!
A couple folks from our list are chomping at the bit to help you get things rolling in this area....so when you have time please reply to my latest PM. Love you!!
-
Okay yeah double post but ...Kri, love you, didn't get to talk to you last weekend, the CS needs to hear back from my most recent PM...let me know if you need me to send again.
-
need to convince parental units to let me go...
I'll try to attend, if that's cool with everyone.
-
As of now my plan is to go but we'll see how that works out .>_>
-
Im not going. I am saving all money for K-con next year to make it the best K-con ever!
-
Thats another thing. I was thinking that I should save my money for Kcon and Scon :P
-
I think I'll be able to go to Mew now! We might even get a room at the Red Lion. Yay!
-
...~beats self in the head until dead~...-.-
-
I think I'll be able to go to Mew now! We might even get a room at the Red Lion. Yay!
Yay! We can haz Ninja Nonsense cosplay? ^_^
-
I don't know if we could get Ninja Nonsense done by Mew... me and Shay are thinking about doing TGoHS and Code Geass. (Colleen don't beat yourself up, it's not even finalized yet!)
-
Our group decided lastnight that we're going to do our best to get to mewcon >,<
I won't have enough money to do another cosplay yet, so I might just borrow a wig and go as yet another vk character that nobody does xD
Although I still think I'll end up being shiki most of the time.
-
...~beats self in the head until dead~...-.-
Be careful. Those desks are fragile.
-
Yep i going to Mew con i sooo pumped hope to see you there
-
sadly i was given the choice between xmas and new years and yeah....
-
non. I'm not going. hope those that are have tons of fun though. :D
-
I'm going ^_^ I asked for the days off today and I am really looking forward to it ;D
-
I'll be there. See y'all!
-
Looks like I'm not going. Drats.
Ah well.
Sakuracon is the main priority and we're on a budget >,<
-
Speaking of Mewcon, we (The Slants) are going to have some new, unreleased material to perform at the concert.
See you there!
-
I'll be there. See y'all!
yay! I haven't seen you in so long ;_;
-
Yeah, for a few months there I had been eaten by some giant pink monster, but I'm back now.
-
pink monster? >_> should I even ask?
-
As much as I would like to see Chris Hazelton (Misfile) http://www.misfile.com (http://www.misfile.com) that fact that they put it on new years eve will prevent me from ever going to mew. Me, much like most people I know have 1-8 things they will get invited to that day that I would not blow off for a con. Makes me sad. I hope they move the date next year. Also, of note be sure to check out the sky at dusk as you will be able to see Venus next to a crescent moon.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081125/ap_on_sc/sci_sky_trio (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081125/ap_on_sc/sci_sky_trio)
The three celestial objects come together from time to time, but often they are too close to the sun or unite at a time when they aren't so visible. The next time the three will be as close and visible as this week will be Nov. 18, 2052, according to Jack Horkheimer, director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium.
But if you are willing to settle for two out of three — Venus and the crescent moon only — it will happen again on New Year's Eve, MacRobert said.
-
yeah that can be a bit of a bummer that it is on New Years eve but I don't really have anything ever going on that night ;D
-
Looks like I'm not going. Drats.
Ah well.
Sakuracon is the main priority and we're on a budget >,<
:'(
-wanted to have some more VK fun-
-

-feels the same-
There will be more times to come my friend! >:O
-
pink monster? >_> should I even ask?
haha, pink in the sense of a pink highlighter that I had to use constantly when taking notes and reading and studying and basically being destroyed by Fall term at PSU. So yeah, a pink highlighter.....and not Kirby.
-
I see. I thought you might be talking about a baby or something >_>;
-
Ah, haha, nooo, not quite, not for a while, hopefully.
-
I'm going. Thinking about what to dress up as.
-
Ah, haha, nooo, not quite, not for a while, hopefully.
yeah I hope so x.x
-
due to a very tight budget, I won't be going sadly.
-
SO MANY CHOICES.
-
I'm a little bummed out, I won't be cosplaying. I really wanted to do a Ninja Nonsense cosplay (Sasuke or, ideally, Onsokumaru), but I just don't have the time nor the finances to do anything other than attend. So, *shrug* Oh well, I will still have a blast. ^_^
-
Aww that is too bad. I plan on Kimimaro. If I finish up Albel I might show that off too....though I may wait till Sakuracon >_>
-
Uhh..I haven't really heard anything about Mewcon since I've been so busy, so does someone want to fill me in? Like, badges, events, and whatnot?
-
Best place to find out is MEWcon Forums.
So sad everyone. I probably won't be able to go.
I mean it's on new years and what now and my mom most likely won't let me go.
-
Uhh..I haven't really heard anything about Mewcon since I've been so busy, so does someone want to fill me in? Like, badges, events, and whatnot?
Anime/manga/sci-fi/fantasy convention.
Dec. 31st - Jan. 1st
At the Red Lion at the Quay
Reg for the weekend is $40.
Room rates are super duper awesome. :0 $79 single, $89 double.
The Slants and A-Key Kyo will have a dual New Year's concert.
Chris Hazelton and Robert Axelrod are other guests that'll be there.
There'll be a common cosplay skit competition, but also a separate one for dance-skits.
I'll be running a Howl's Moving Castle panel! ;D
We'll have tabletop and console gaming.
I believe there's gonna be a Harry Potter panel, and a vampire panel. (Oh, popular fantasy. xD The vampire one will not be just about Twilight though; I think I can promise that... To say the least. )
There'll be veiwing rooms with sci-fi, fantasy, and anime movies/shows.
Art show!~
BangBangNeko will be there too.
Ur.
It will be a lot smaller than K-con. :P
Look here (http://www.mewcon.com/joomla/) for more info! :D

(That's the dance one.)
Go to the last half of this page of this thread (http://www.mewcon.com/forum/index.php/topic,185.15.html) for an idea of what we're looking for there. :]
-
ARE YOU SERIOUS???? A COSPLAY CHOREOGRAPHY DANCE CONTEST???
Now I really really wish I could go >o<
Whhyyyyy meeeee? T^T
-
HARRY POTTER PANEL?!?!?!?!
OMG HECKS YES!!! <333

Aw, I didn't pre-reg :D
Two days of epic-ness though! WOOT! And thank you! ;3
-
you can still pre-reg up till the 24 I believe ;D
I did today.
-
Really? That's strange, the pamphlet I have gives three time periods, "Aug 10-Oct 10" (30$), "Oct 11-Nov 30" (35$), and "at the door" (40$).
-
I guess they must have extended it. You can still pre reg online up till the 24th.
-
isn't it the same as the at-door price though?
-
I paid $35 but it does say that it is $40. Even if it is the same price I wouldn't want to wait in a line during the con to get my badge. I would rather wait the day before.
-
Man, I better decide quick if I want to go then.
-
I think it will be a lot of fun. Even if it is rather small ;D
-
I agree! I'm quite excited for it but I hope it gets warmer by then :D,
-
Yeah I am hoping it is a little warmer by then and also be safe enough to drive ;D
-
Oh, only online? Damn, I have no way to do it then...(why do people assume everyone has credit cards and/or paypal?)
-
Awwww that is too bad. Maybe find a friend who can pay then pay them back?
-
I am most assuredly going to mewcon! -dances-
room is booked, badges are preregistered, life is GOOD! >w<
-
I have an empty room that needs to be populated for the con.
-
I am most assuredly going to mewcon! -dances-
room is booked, badges are preregistered, life is GOOD! >w<
I was going to get some badges for some friends but I may wait till the door because I don't want to buy badges if there isn't going to be an event >_>
-
This is true. If there's gonna be a MEW this year, there certainly won't be one next year.
-
This is true. If there's gonna be a MEW this year, there certainly won't be one next year.
What's that supposed to mean? Seems pretty solid to me.

YAY! i might be going!

Why wouldnt there be an event? I'm confused.
-
This is true. If there's gonna be a MEW this year, there certainly won't be one next year.
Why would you say that? You always seem to think things are going to turn out bad. You always find fault in whatever makes someone happy.

if the snow keeps up like this they may close it.
-
Oooh, the weather. Well, I'm sure it will clear up in the week. Hopefully.
-
Looks like the weather should be cleared up by the 28th at the latest. Hopefully weather wont be a factor.
-
oh okay,
Is it fairly bad up by vancouver? I'd cry if I couldn't go. I havn't been to a con in over a year. -foams-
-
I'm hoping that it will be fine and I am sure that it will be fine.
Yeah Vancouver is pretty bad. They have about 10 inches of snow right now. A lot of the highways are closed too x.x
-
This is true. If there's gonna be a MEW this year, there certainly won't be one next year.
Eep! Don't say such things. I want to go to one someday xD
-
To those of you who are going:
JOIN THE COSPLAY CHOREOGRAPHY CONTEST!
or get people you know to do it!
A sign-up form should be up soon on the site...
But for info and example videos, go to this thread (http://www.mewcon.com/forum/index.php/topic,185.0.html) - replies # 23 onward.
You can do the Hare Hare Yukai, or the Hana Kimi cheer dance, or Massara Blue Jeans, or create your own dance or WHATEVER!~ We just need people to join. :/
-
I say it because MEW is a for-profit. The con chair walks away with whatever's left, leaving no seed money for next year's event.
-
That doesn't sound good for future cons if they do that.
CASSI! Mew forums confuse me but I might want to officially sign myself up for your dance thing :3
-
Hooray, osla~ If you know anybody else who might do it, please encourage them to do so. :3
-
Id like to sign up for thine dance thinger,
Is there a sheet/form yet?
-
Not yet, there will be one soon. I'll inform y'all as soon as I find out when it is up.
Get your friends and other people to join!~
-
Spleeny, Naru, and I are going. :3
-
I am really looking forward to this con. I know it will be much smaller than Kumoricon but that's ok. I am going to be there as Kimimaro ^_^
-
I'm excited!!~~
-
Is anyone going to be there on pre-reg night on the 30th?
-
I'll be there.
-
I'm going to be there with Marie and Steven and Anna.....maybe Patrick :P
-
I am going to MEWcon as Kagura sohma with a Kyo Sohma and Tohru Honda from fruits basket :D
-
That would be a fun group. I'll keep an eye out for you ^_^
-
awesome :D who will you be going as Nikki?
-
I'll be getting there on the 31st and staying through the new year, so not on pre-reg, but I will be bringing my Barrett with me. Not sure if I will wear it, but I'm bringing it in case. Can't wait to see y'all there.
-
I'm going on the 30th. I need to pick up my badge but I will be there bright and early on the 31st ^_^
-
We'll hopefully be able to get there early on the 31st because we need to get our badges too.
-
Yeah I think we might be there about 5 or so. I guess it depends on when they want to go :P
-
I am just glad the snow will be all gone by the time mewcon happens :).
-
Should I stay or should I go now....
-
Yea i woke up this morning and the snow was mostly gone I was like "chaaa!...-falls back asleep-"
so who all is going as what? :D
-
I am going as A Pocky box and Holiday Near
-
I say it because MEW is a for-profit. The con chair walks away with whatever's left, leaving no seed money for next year's event.
You really know how to say things that can piss people off, don't you? For your information, there is most definitely going to be a MewCon Next year. We are already making plans for it as we speak.
To Everyone else:
MewCon is definitely going to be smashing fun! I will be in attendance! Look around for me if you can XP Who knows my hair may be dyed to another color. Knowing me and my craziness. -wishes she had more money so she could get purple and finally do Yuugao-
-
Thanks you. ^_^ Good to hear the news from the front lines, so to speak.
-
Eve:
Well yeah, XD frontlines is what you could call me XP I'm FAIRLY certain there will be a MewCon next year. We are already making plans for guests. SO to speak of, we also know that con WILL be happening this year. The forecast shows that the weather will definitely be clear enough.
-
@ Iruka, that was awfully mean and random. Anyway I'll be going as Kallen Kozuki in black knight uniform for both days. I'll have a Euphie and a Lulu :3
-
Yea i woke up this morning and the snow was mostly gone I was like "chaaa!...-falls back asleep-"
so who all is going as what? :D
I already told you who I was going as but keep an eye out for Kimimaro ^_^
I am hoping to get an Orochimaru plushie while I am there but we'll see what happens :P
-
@ Iruka, that was awfully mean and random. Anyway I'll be going as Kallen Kozuki in black knight uniform for both days. I'll have a Euphie and a Lulu :3
Wasn't really that mean or random if you look at the last few pages of posting and discussion, but anyway, I'll let it die, lol.
-
I know what happened a few pages ago and it had all been resolved until she dredged it back up. I'd also like to put it to rest but I won't ignore rudeness. OT: Does anyone know what the curfew is? xD
-
On the 31 it's 2 am and on the 1st it's midnight.
Also for pre-reg on the 30th its midnight
-
Well from what I know... and I do mean what I know... there really isn't a curfew. People of all ages are free to mill about the con grounds for as long as they want on the con days.
-
Oh that's awesome! Are The Slants and AKeyKyo playing on different days or on the same day? Thank you guys for being so helpful x3
-
From what I know, they will be doing a New Years Dance. They will be playing on the same night (31st), from what I remember? Their will be a Dance, and there is also plenty of Countdowns all around Con.
-
Yea i woke up this morning and the snow was mostly gone I was like "chaaa!...-falls back asleep-"

I already told you who I was going as but keep an eye out for Kimimaro ^_^

That would be sooo cute! :D
Im really happy that the con is close but it feels like forever away at the same time >_<
-
Yeah I know what you mean. These next few days are going to pass by so slowly. My parents are going out of town Monday and I'll have to entertain myself Monday and Tuesday then I'll be good Tuesday night ^_^
-
Halloweentown naminé and a steampunk. XDD
-so excited- Im just about finished packing. XDD
I hope to get a hug or something from everyone that goes that I recognize XDD
-
I'm sure I'll recognize a Halloweentown Namine :P
Where are you coming from?
-
Yea im actually considering just going to my dads or something monday to pass time, and play with my baby sister tuesday tho I'm all set, Tohru and I have a spa day planned xD
-
Choreography contest form is up!! Info's on the main page, also under the contests section of the site.
There's some stuff missing, so I think another version will be up soon, but this version will still be accepted and we can likely easily figure out what we need to at the run-through.
You'll need to bring in the song you're dancing to, or you could send it to me so we'll already have it.
Also.
SCHEDULE IS UP. :] (Under the Programming section.)
http://www.mewcon.com/ (http://www.mewcon.com/)
-
thank god, I asked and asked and the program is finally done glicthing out
-
I'm sure I'll recognize a Halloweentown Namine :P
Where are you coming from?
Ill be running around as that on the first day,
I'm coming from Elmira, outside of Eugene.
-
I see. So you will be staying in a hotel or at a friends?
I'll keep an eye out for you.
-
AHHHHHH!
Last minute cancelation of a party!
I can come!
I think!
That is, if I can get a Mytho costume together in three days!
Wish me luck!
I need it!
Hope to see you guys there!
~Katie~
-
Good Luck. I hope to see you there too. I got everything I need so far. I am so looking forward to this :3
-
wow, yikes good luck Sound!
I have everything I need ^_^ I finally found a yellow ribbon....well its a crappy ribbon but it works xD
-
OMG I am so excited. XD Everything's ready to go, and I'll be there with my awesome group of friends. I shall be there as Matt and staying at the hotel for a night! X3
-
@ nikkiolei - I'm hoping to get a room, either by sharing with someone from the con forums, or that my dad can pay for one =/ I'm also trying to find a ride back the second day. If I can't find a ride, then i'll only be there the first day.
Are you staying at the hotel?
Broadcast
Anyone in the eugene area willing to give me a ride back from con the second day?
-feels like a dork for asking- XDD;
-
I need a top hat for this. Nichole we need to work on our wigs at your house tomorrow before leaving. x.x; At least give them a touchup. My Axel wig looks really cute right now.
-
haha. hee.
I didn't prepare really until the last minute, so I've been rushing to get everything together and to contact everyone ouo It's been hectic.
But now my stuff's all packed and I'm ready to head out! See everyone there *0*
-
@Bundyangel I am not staying at a hotel I am having a few friends stay at my house.
@ Sayda: Thats fine, you can work on your wig here. I figured you would be anyway :P
I'm so excited for this. Its starts in less than 12 hours (for those that are pre-reged)
-
Who is going to the pre-event for the people who pre-reregistered.
I am
-
I'll be there. Not sure if I'll be in costume or not >_> ;D
-
I'm not pre-registered, but I'm going to show up anyway! I know that I will probably be in costume, but I'm not sure yet.
-
>_< I was trying on the top for my costume and the zipper came off >_< >_< >_<
but I got it fixed. I need to add a little glue to the top of the zipper to make sure it doesn't come off again >_>
-
I NEED TO FIND A GLUE SUBSTANCE. For my face. Tape doesn't work. Any ideas? It needs to stick to my face, and parts of the wig.
-
I have sports tape >_> Its made for the skin. Or you could use supper glue :P or even spirit gum?
-
But will it stick to wig hair? I was thinking about super glue, but I don't want it to damage my skin, or the wig. Aaaand I've never tried spirit gum. I've never seen spirit gum, either. x.x
-
I have some here. You are welcome to try it out. As for the sports tape it pulled off all the little hairs on my chest the last time I used it x.x
-
Okay awesome. I'm going to the Halloween store today, did you need anything there for Cosplay? XD
-
So Kahlan and I will be coming by for pre-reg tonight to pick up our stuff. We don't have a room booked until tomorrow night, so we won't be staying tonight, but we will be there for a little bit. Hope to see some of you!
-
I will keep an eye out for you. ^_^ If you see me say Hi :P
Okay awesome. I'm going to the Halloween store today, did you need anything there for Cosplay? XD
No I'm good
-
Eve are either of you going to be Cosplaying for Mewcon?
@Nikki : Righto!
-
No, neither of us are cosplaying. We just don't have it in us right now, kinda burnt out (as far as dressing, cosplaying, creating goes).
-
:P you are no fun.
Well it would be easier to pick you out of a crowd since you aren't dressing up XD
-
Sorry, lol. I don't have any new costumes, and I feel like I have been falling back on Barret a lot lately. I'm giving it some time off.
Mewcon feels so laid back, almost like a non-con (not in the bad sense, of course), I feel like I can just attend without a costume and actually be okay, haha. I plan to just enjoy the con and let others have the cosplay glory for once (as if I'm some sort of attention-hog, lol). Now I can focus on taking pictures!
-
Yeah I guess that is a good thing ;D
I plan on taking a lot of pictures. I can't wait to show off Kimimaro :D
-
I got my Kallen cosplay, I luffs it! We should be leaving early tomorrow, we didn't pre-reg so I look forward to waiting in line with everyone 8)
-
hope you guys have fun, i has the work and with the hives still going on not much in a party mood but have a blast for me!
-
I feel kind of guilty because I think I travailed the lest distance to get to the con. I travailed about 9 miles to get there. XD
-
I can't go ::sniff:: but have fun for meeee! ^0^
and someone better video record the choreography contest and upload it so I can watch xD
Have fun everyone!
-
So, quite the kick-off! (I'm kidding, lol)
No, but sitting around was alright, having Marie, Stephen, and Nichole show up made waiting for pre-reg to open more bearable.
I'll see you all tomorrow!
-
Wheee! We're leaving soon, I'm pumped to wait in some lines!
-
XD;; Mom still hasn't woken up. ....one hour drive plus waiting in line to pay....ugh. XD
-
Syddie you're going? I can't wait to see you. Lawl, we just got out of Safeway and we accidentally spent $11 on grapes :D
-
XD VERY last minute, and just for today. ME EITHER. I should give you my cell number. XD
How do you accidentally spend money on fruit?!
-
MEWCON IS OFFICIALLY OPEN
.....i think
-
I'm having fun. Its quite small but still fun ^_^
I need to take pictures now =/
-
I'm in Tanis' Go panel at the moment. Mew is pretty small but it's alright xD
-
I expect more details when someone here reaches a computer or cell phone with internet access.
Gimme the goods! :D
-
I just dropped in for an hour or so (as Industry with Kumoricon) and yes it is very small, and its very much so their first year in that respect, but EVERYONE seemed to be having fun. Not many attendees as far as I could see but it looked like lots of people were having fun or hanging out. I think this was a great way for some people to spend New Years (especially our younger Anime fans!) If you arent allready there and you can, I would say check it out tomorrow. Its small enough to see in one day if you dont mind missing some panels and stuff.
-
Wow Mew con is fun. I stared to feel sick after Bang-Bang Neko Playhouse. That was so fun. I cheated at musical chairs (I am sorry to the person I pulled the chair out from under). So I am at home and will stay here the rest. HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE CON TOMORROW.
-
The con's alright. I feel like we shouldn't have paid 40$ for such a small con, especially since it's only two nights. Akicon was three days, and it was only 25$.
-
I totally agree with Sayda. As fun as the Slants concert just was (probably the best part of Mew! Ow!) there wasn't really anything going on for hours and hours on end. I can has better second day nao?
-
I was considering driving up though may be too tired...can anyone be more precise? How small is small? What's on the agenda for today? What are the hours of available programming for today?
-
This is the schedule that they have online:
http://www.mewcon.com/schedule/index.php
-
Thx, I am 100% sure I'd've loved it
(and have to ask if I can borrow that name FanFic Free-For-All!)
but my hermit of a boyfriend gave me a footrub and backrub and I melted and decided not to drive to Portland without him. :)
-
Hmm, well......I'll be the one to say I wasn't all that keen on M.E.W.con after coming back from it. It was really cool to see A-Key Kyo again, I'm very happy that the staff invited them to play there, that was cool. Other than that though...there just was not anything going on. It's sad really, because there was potential for it to be better than it was.
Okay, I'll change that. It's not the fact that there wasn't stuff going on, there were a few things here and there. But it seemed like the schedule just collapsed all together by the second day (today). Everything I tried to attend just never happened. Rooms were left open and unattended despite the updated schedule having things planned for those locations. It just felt like there was no order or structure after the first few hours of the pre-reg evening.
I'm not trying to be negative, though. I can understand that it is the first year and problems are certain to arise. Still though...I was hoping for better.
And Kahlan says ditto.
-
There wasn't too many events that I was really interested in going to. We just hung out in the lobby or in the rooms making funny faces :P
It wasn't too bad, it was fun to hang out with people and I am hoping that the next year will be better. Maybe it will grow ;D
-
Still waiting to hear anything regarding the actual attendance, and also perhaps the # of staff & volunteers.
Perhaps New Year's is a time so many folks with a lot of con experience are doing other things with family, significant others, or out of state, that they couldn't get enough folks to work the con to keep it organized? But seriously a bunch of empty rooms during times that were scheduled--I'm in Eugene so I wouldn't know--was weather a factor this weekend? (It's been rainy but 50 degrees here.) Otherwise that's an uncomfortable flake factor--either panelists not showing up or someone not engaging coordination. Perhaps B, leading to A. For example I helped a friend plan some panels. She totally was excited and determined to follow through--even though no one ever replied to her or to me regarding the scheduling of her panels. So she didn't know where to be when til arriving. I love the couple of KC vets involved in MEW so I am positive towards the event, but it sounds disappointing at the organizational level, yet a great time at the socializing level. Mustach, what did you so love about it?
-
It was reaaaaally fun, but totally not worth the money. 80 for Ari and me wasn't what I would call fair, but The Slants were awesome and I had a lot of fun with my friends~
-
I would estimate that there was about 250 people there....though I don't have exact numbers. Also the con is still going on. It ends tonight at midnight. I'm sure they announce the attendance at the closing ceremonies.
yeah the cost was way too much for that >_>
-
Oho man! That Harry Potter panel was attractive! Golly jee willikers there were a few people that just needed to calm down. They were being sourpatches about things. But other then that, it was entertaining.
-
What's this about a Harry Potter ruckus? Were magic wands involved?
-
Haah, no. More like magic butter in a cup. There was a very angry person in there that was really upset with life. There were plenty of nerds, though!
And a voice changing thing that Megan had. Oh man it was great.
-
Hmm, no con is safe from con-drama, lol.
-
I think that panel was my favorite part :P
I really enjoyed it. I liked playing with the butter drink XD
-
I know you did. But you got Hufflepuffle down to the negatives! XD
-
I didn't do anything. The group behind us was way louder. I was giggling they were screaming XD
-
Yeah the group behind us were young and very angry teenagers. So I guess you can't blame them. But I don't think they liked us very much, either. XD
-
Yeah, at least we wern't cussing like wild XD
I loved that voice changer thing.
O.O We might not have won the point game but at least we had the most disturbing minds :P
-
Haah so did I! Yeah, that's true. The points were rigged, anyway!
-
yeah it seems like it. I'm sorry that I haven't read those books so many times that I can spell long made up words :P
-
Got back home at around 8. Had fun, but it was really small. I second what everyone was saying about there being not many things going on. But I had a ton of fun at cosplay choreography where I danced to "Sexyback" with one of my friends who was L. I can't believe I did that.. XDD Then I did the Macarena with my group which we totally failed hard at. XDDD So that was awesome.
Had fun bitching in the lobby with Sayda about the price of the con! 8D
Had a total sleep hangover by like 10pm on the first day. I even fell asleep in the lobby. And I think someone got a picture of it. *facepalm*
-
Had fun bitching in the lobby with Sayda about the price of the con! 8D
I'm a little upset that I wasn't there for that. I was way too tired to even get out of bed. I got 11 hours of sleep last night though :P
-
So, of people who saw A-Key Kyo play, what do you all think of their original material? I actually love their original songs that they played. It is great to see that they are not just a cover band, but truly skilled musicians and composers as well. I can't wait to see where they go with their new stuff.
-

It really was a great bitching session. Oh believe me, I was definitely out of it by like 10pm. People probably thought I was on something because I was all moving slowly and probably swaying a bit. XD The red lines under my eyes from my goggles probably didn't help much either. SLEEP HANGOVER.
-
Haaah. I was wondering what those were!
-
I loved A-Key-Kyo because they were in Code Geass cosplay and I bonded with my fellow Kallen. All in all I enjoyed the second day a lot more, I almost wish that Mew was a 3 day con because the fun was just starting, and well, we did pay $40 :D
-
The con was sooo tiny but still I had such a blast, the dating games were hilarious and such but I am sad its over >.<
-
Dating game was very fun, and I'm also sad that it's over ;-;
-
I didn't go to the dating game. I love those though :P The one at Kumoricon was fantastic
The speed dating seemed a little iffy. Did anyone go to that?
-
The speed dating seemed a little iffy. Did anyone go to that?
I went to it, and it was kinda fail. The host was funny though. I talked to a lot of the same people twice, and it got confusing as to where you were supposed to go next.
-
No, I just went to the anime dating game. What was iffy about it? Oh, and I made a new thread in the suggestion box area of the Mew forums so all of our complaints and comments of this year's Mew can be heard so that if there is a future one it'll be much improved ^_^
-

A lot of the people that were there I wouldn't want to date, nor would I want them thinking that it was ok to try to date me. A lot of the guys I saw were really creepy, almost stalker like. Though I know I need to get to know people before making judgments like that, but it is really hard when you think that your safety might be in jeopardy =/
-
Omg I know how you feel, there were some creepers in the anime dating game as well >.<
-
Didn't go to either, mostly was in the dealers hall manning booth
-
Which booth did you man? The only booths I bought things from were Nekopan, the cute lolita one, and the one in the front with all the bags and stuff. I looove Nekopan's chocolate mouse cherry things *_*
-

Im sorry you did not like the prices set but Im sure you still had fun. As a staff member the opinion of the people count. If you did not like the prices did you write anything for the suggestion box. The suggestion of the people matter. Also remember it was a first year con. We will also be having it next year as well. I hope to see you there.
-
I know that some people commented about the price. And even if it was the first year it still shouldn't have been that expensive. If anything it should have been much much cheaper.
-

I half heartedly manned the subVersion booth telling people about film fest in may

And persuading the masses to fill out questionnaires and win goodies!
-
Another thing about Mew, I kinda wish they would've had karaoke. ;-;
-
That seems to be a popular thing.....though they kinda had it. There was rock band XD
-
I played Rock Band! And I discovered that bass on hard is still too hard for me xD
-
I can play bass on hard on some songs ;D
I haven't played in a while though =/
-
I have the first Rock Band now so I'll be practicing 8) On topic, I'll probably go to Mewcon again but the heads at Mew will need to prove that it'll even be worth it.
-
I may go again if I know that more people will be going this time.
-
Due to family's Christmas celebration being rescheduled for the first day and then my friend/ride having a family emergency the second, I didn't get to attend as much as I wanted to, but for the four hours I did get to go, it seemed like an all right con. I do agree, however, that the admission price was a little high.
-
you only went for 4 hours and paid that price?! I'm sorry (how much was it for one day?)
I would never do that.
-
I know that it was their first year, so having a high cost is a quicker way to make money. But honestly I would argue that if they made it a much cheaper Con (like Akicon) they would have generated more interest (especially in this economy AND after Christmas) and thus had more attendance. I know the price was WAY high for me.
And honestly....there was adult programming, but I felt "out of place" not being a young person in the "hang out" circles. I think I saw more people hanging out in the halls and lobby than in the individual panels.
Like I said before it was a GREAT place for a safe New Years for younger Otaku. I mean no dissrespect with this. I dont tipically go to Con's with a HUGE group of friends so I spend time in panels learning and enjoying what the panels are about. With all the talk of late, or panels that never opened it kinda limits what you can and cant do.
-
I know we were in the lobby most of the time :P
You could have hung out with us. We were a little older. I was wearing Kimimaro a little bit the first day then the second half of the day I was wearing black and white spotted pjs with my Albel wig ;D I was with the Light and L (they were also Axel and Roxas in the suits)
We played games and talked most of the time. Also brought up the idea of three of us being dugtrio from pokemon and one being diglett XD
-
Dugtrio would be epic xD High price might've been the reason why there were so few people. I adored Sachibelle though! I can't wait to see her at Kcon <3
-
Lol. Thanks, that would have been pretty cool. I was also talking to some of the vendors who "politely" asked if this was a real convention or a party more or less.
-
XD That's great.
It seemed like it is more of a party than a con :P
-
If it was a party then it was a rather tame one :D
-
Kahlan and I were out in the lobby most of the time, but only because we really had nowhere else to be. (Back to the post about the panels and events I wanted to attend all being dissolved/canceled.) The crowd just felt so young, it made me feel like there was no place for me, even in the lobby. Thus why Kahlan and I were usually just off on our own somewhere. It really did feel like a kids' party or something, not to be disrespectful of course. I just felt out of place, essentially.
-
If it was a party then it was a rather tame one :D
yeah it was rather tame.....I think my group may have been the wildest at times >_> ;D
Not all the time though, we laughed loudly and were very hyper

tell me about it. There were lots of kids there x.x

Eve, you're so intimidating in person. ;-;
About the karaoke... We were supposed to have it, but stuff happened. >__>
-
awwww that is too bad ;_;
yeah Eve is very intimidating :P ;D
-
you only went for 4 hours and paid that price?! I'm sorry (how much was it for one day?)
I would never do that.
Yeah, it's because I pre-reged at AkiCon before the snow storm hit and my family's usual Christmas night gathering got rescheduled. Even with that though, I was planning on going the next day, but my friend/ride had a family emergency come up, so I couldn't make it. It's all right though...my parents sound like they're going to reimburse me. :D
-
Thats good to hear. It sounded like it might have been a waste of money. Did you have fun though?
-
Eve, you're so intimidating in person. ;-;
About the karaoke... We were supposed to have it, but stuff happened. >__>
I'm sorry :'( I am trying hard not to be, but in social situations where there are a lot of people I don't know, I tend to slip into intimidation mode and not notice it.
I am sorry though, hopefully I can make a better impression next time I see you. ^_^
-
Its kinda nice that you are intimidating, it keeps the creepy and scary people away :P
But I know you and you aren't that big and bad ;D
-
Ahh, I felt so sorry for the vendors x-x; With barely anyone there, not to mention with barely any money.
I hope Mew's a lot more organized next year. A lot of things had to happen last-minute, and just barely worked out, or didn't work at all D8
-
I think nekopan did great. They sold out of a lot of their cupcakes. I bought a lot :P
I only took about $100 and I used half of that for a hotel and another 10 for pizza ;D
-
Eve, you're so intimidating in person. ;-;

omg >.< I saw him at the con and even tho I have spoken to him plenty of times I just couldn't approach O_O
lol Sorry eve Im shy outside of cons too but Im not good at walking up and saying hi...
-
I was a shy person though I grew out of it this past Kumoricon. I think the cons have really helped me become more of an outgoing person. I think everyone needs a little con to help branch out :D
If it weren't for the con I wouldn't have meet so many cool people. But I do know what you mean Hatake ^_^

I lurk more than I post. lol.
I had a lot of fun at Mewcon. Did a lot of running around with Nate. The chaos of it all was frustrating, but it was worth it, getting to see everyone and going to the concerts.
We tried to set up a karaoke room, but we were kicked out for the A-Key Kyo concert.
Overall, I really hope that Mewcon can come back next year. I had tons of fun!
-
Dugtrio would be epic xD High price might've been the reason why there were so few people. I adored Sachibelle though! I can't wait to see her at Kcon <3
Thank you so much! I'm really glad there was such a big attendance to my concert. I was actually pretty surprised at the turnout!
You can definitely count on me to try to get into Kumo this year. <3<3<3
Through most of the con, I was cooped up in the room trying to go over my songs and as a result ended up catching a minor cold before my concert, but it was all worth it. ESPECIALLY because of Neko Pan's Pangalactic Garbleblaster Cupcake. UGHHHHH YESSSSS~~~ <3 Hitchhiker's Guide reference FTW~ <3
Rachael (Scarecrow) and I both had an awesome time. : D If there is a MEWcon next year, I would be more than happy to perform again.
-
Sorry the Rock Band kind of drowned out the concert; we were expecting you to have a volume closer to that of The Slants the night before, so we cranked it. Main Events and Gaming probably won't be right beside each other next year though. :P
-
Mewcon was fun >w<
I totally told you your concert would go well Sachi! I was sitting at the reg desk when you wandered up singing and then you were fretting about whether your concert would be any good. You've got a lot of potential, I look forward to attending your future concerts and watching you grow performance-wise ;D
Ga, my abs hurt from Caramelldansen xP
-
Oh, don't worry about the volume of Rock Band! Honestly, I hadn't even noticed it at all~ *A*;; I was getting way too into the songs and having way too much fun with my audience to even pay any attention to anything else around me.
Oh, Teepet, thank you so much! Before this, I'd never really done ANYTHING like that before. In fact, the last concert that I went to was probably back in 2004, and it was a sit-down concert all the way at the back. This whole thing was so new to me! Regardless, it was seriously the most fun I've had in ages, and I would give anything to do it again.
I NEVER EXPECTED THAT MANY PEOPLE WOULD GO UP ON STAGE FOR CARAMELLDANSEN! *A* My goodness you guys! You were awesome! Thank you, thank you, and thank you SO much again for everything, everyone who showed up!
-
You were awesome, Sachi. :D
-
I agree it was an awesome performance, loved the Guitar Hero jamming.
-
Sachi I loved you and your Scarecrow! I was the red spiky haired chick :D
-
Oh, I was the pink haired girl with the bunny. :3 I can't wait to see your Kumoricon performance. <3
-
I'm glad to hear that a lot of people enjoyed Mewcon, even though it sounds like the turnout was low. I hope they have enough funds to pull through until the next year. I remember the first year of Kumoricon in Eugene. We didn't get more than a few hundred people, so in many ways it was more like an extended party than a full on con. There were so many things that went wrong, but fortunately, a lot that went right! I still can't believe we survived and that it turned into what it is now.
Some things that were lucky for us that first year:
A dirt cheap hotel rate, because the hotel was going to go out of business literally a week or two after our con.
An AMAZING Kumoricon staff of 20-30 that worked themselves to the bone before and during the con, most working/preparing 48 hours straight during the con.
Being the first con in Oregon, so for a bunch of people that came, it was their first con ever, and we didn't have to compare ourselves to the monstrously larger and more-entertaining Sakuracon.
Some things that didn't work so well:
Only a dozen vendors could come, similar to Mewcon
Having it in november: Mewcon may have similarly discovered that getting people to attend a con in winter is difficult!
missing a LOT of stuff to do: you guys have it so lucky you can get a rock band to play at the con, among other things!
no money for real equipment: a friend of a friend loaned us a real DDR machine, and we got some basic sound equipment for a dance, and just about everything else we borrowed/begged for from friends!
I cried several times at nights before the con because I thought I was going to lose all my savings because noone would show up. Thankfully, we made enough money to break even and fund a bit of the next convention, mostly because we borrowed so much from friends or the university. For most staffers, it was their first time doing anything con-related. We sort of made everything up from scratch, based on what we'd seen as attendees to other cons. I'm sure if a lot of you went to Kumoricon's first year, you might have been unhappy attending that as well! Our solution was that if people were unhappy about the lack of stuff to do, we begged and pleaded with them to become staff for next year's con!
I think it's unfortunate for Mewcon that Kumoricon has already been established in Portland for so many years. It can lead to some unfair assumptions as to what it will be like. Because we moved Kumoricon from Eugene to Portland after the first year, we were able to shrug off any negative image we may have acquired of being a too-small con. Many people attending kumoricon the second year didn't even realize that there was one in Eugene the year before! Hopefully Mewcon's first year will have strengthened the bonds of the people who attended, and hopefully many will consider becoming staff next year, and next year's Mewcon will have a large and strong team. The most important thing for a convention (besides having enough money to rent a location) is maintaining a strong team of staff. Everything else you can reconsider. New Years may not have been the best of dates. Maybe consider changing the name (too close to Mucus!) :-) Seek out new methods of advertising.
I wish all the best to the Mewcon team for 2009, and if any of you feel it wasn't up to snuff compared to Kumoricon, just remember how far Kumoricon had to grow to get where it is today. And if you aren't staffing or volunteering your time, why not consider it? (this goes for staffing Kumoricon too of course :-))
Happy new year, everybody!
-Peter
-
Wow- nicely worded, I hope everyone involved with MEWcon reads that.
-
I mostly agree with what you said but I don't think Mewcon should change it's name because you think it sounds like "mucus" o.O To me it sounds like Mew the Poke'mon, mew as in the sound a cat makes, and I'm pretty sure there's an acronym somewhere in there.
-
Late response, woo! *A*;
: D Thank you all SO much~ <333 I'm definitely trying to get to Kumo, and even if I don't make it there, I will be more than happy to do another performance at the next MEWcon.
The funny thing about the Guitar Hero guitar! It was actually suggested as a joke, and I don't remember at which point we decided to take it seriously. I wasn't even sure if we were going to even get one, but seriously you guys in the Rock Band room uh...rock! for letting me borrow it.
-

M.E.W. = Manga and Exotic Worlds. "Exotic Worlds" being the part of the name that includes sci-fi and fantasy and such.
I don't think it should change the date, either. Sure, people have stuff to do on New Year's, seeing family and such. But a lot of people also do not have what to do. MEWcon was the best New Year's party I've ever been to, for sure.
-
I agree! One of my non-nerdy friends called me during the hardcore Slants concert and he was just chilling at home. If there was an actual countdown next year it'd be amazing *_*
-
Oh my gosh! I had a blast at MEW and I'm glad to see so many other people enjoyed it as well!
I thank all of you that came to my panels {Shonen-ai/Vampire/Harry Potter} and I hope you all enjoyed them in some way or another. I really enjoyed all of your company and I hope to see you all in my panels again next year! I will be improving on the panels and changing things up as well. If anyone has a suggestion to brighten open my panels, please PM me. All suggestion are welcome and I will try to work them into next years panels.
I also noticed many of the issues MEW had this year, but this is MEW's first year and It will surly be better next year. I really hope to see you guys at MEW '09 if I get accepted as a Panelist and Security again. I really enjoyed hanging out with ever one and I liked the fact that I got to get to know so many people. I personally believe this would have been much harder if MEW was much bigger, but I would love to see and meet new people! xD
I absolutely loved all the guests that showed up. Spike Spencer was a very amusing guy and, though he was late for a couple of his panels, he was a very enjoyable person to be around.
A-Key-Kyo and The Slants personally aren't my favorite bands, but I think they did amazingly well. In fact, I actually started to joy them after awhile. Sachi was amazing! I totally love her voice, she is very sweet, and she had a great stage presents. I really hope to see her on stage again.
Chris Hazelton was a completely new person for me, but that didn't stop me from coming into one of his panels and saying hello. I must say I enjoyed chatting with him and that he actually got me interested in reading Misfiles. He explained his manga and showed off his art in ways that almost instantly caught my attention. I personally think I will enjoy his mangas.
Robert Axelrod was a really sweet guy and he was really easy to get along with as well. I hung out with him for awhile the day after con ended and I ran into him a couple of times. I couldn't believe that such a nice guy actually played Lord Zed! Then I reminded myself that he was just playing the part of his character. I do wish I could have had more time to hang out with him though... -pouts-
Though I really wanted to go to Michael HopCroft's panels, I sadly was unable to make it to them do to the fact that I had security work. Yes, I know... Very sad that I wasn't able to meet him. I do hope that I will be able to meet him next time though! Don't think you will get away from me that easily Mr. HopCroft!
Anyways, I'm going to stop right there before I get a little carried away. If anyone recognizes who I am, just send me a message if you want to chat. I do love a good chat every now and again and I made quite a few friends that I was unable to get information from.

MEW was easily the best New Years party i've ever had, counting down with The Slants (caught on video mind you) was completely awesome and a great way to rock into the new years.
-
Sachi I definitely think you should do Kumoricon! Me and some of your other hard core mosh girls were thinking of starting a Sachi fanclub <3
-
We did a countdown in gaming. AKA five of us stood there yelling numbers and then I took a monster bite of my sandwich, and then Washu took a monster bite of my sandwich, then we realised we had been 12 seconds early because my watch was 12 seconds faster than I thought it was. :P
Modab, thank you very much for saying all of that.
When I talked to Steve about it, my understanding was that, other than attendance and earnings, MEW Con had a very good first year. Our game room was awesome, and couldn't have been that way without the fantastic work of amaZMent, SDWashu, LegoMan60, GuitarHero32, MonsterGaming, and Blaze, as well as many others who provided small things that turned out to be absolute necessities.
Sachi, I was the zombie (not cosplay; the actual zombie) with long hair and scruffy face who played the piano a little before your concert. I tried to play quietly when your phone started ringing; hopefully I wasn't too much of a disturbance or anything. That piano was a lifesaver though. I can't go more than a day or two without playing or I start tweakin'. :P
-
mewcon appeased my inner otaku fangirl soul so much. I slept for 13 hours afterward. i dont know what day it is XDD
Im so happy i got to hug and meet so many people from the forums at con. <33

Oh, haha! ^^;; The phone ringing wasn't any big deal. I actually was more worried about disrupting your playing, so that's why I left during it. I'm still really sorry about that...orz
I seriously know what you mean though, oh man. Seriously, if I lose my voice and have no access to a piano, I become ferocious. It's actually pretty frightening. orz
Kadaj, thank you very much for coming to see the show! : D I'm really really glad that you had a good time, and you can be SURE that I'll be back on stage again! <3<3<3
Oh, osla!! *A* I'm contacting Tanis ASAP to get it all set up. The moment that my voice is back and he and I are both available, some serious Kumo-talk is going to go down. WOOO~!!! : D
orz I...i...Uguu...I'm so flattered...;////;! I don't know what to say...! Th-thank you so much...!
-
Well, I hope your voice gets better soon.~ :3

/general message
i definitely had a really awesome time at MEW. A lot of people I know complained about the venue and the lack of good food in the area(which i have to say, was a problem) but really, besides that it was fun. Small cons are the best places to make con friends, you know? And it's really a nice break between Kcon and Scon. I'm really glad I went.
xD I'd been craving a con for a good month and a half, so MEWcon came at a good time, for me. What a way to spend a New Years.
-
@ Sachi, yay for Kumo-talking! Your currently nonexistant fan club is behind you all the way! @ Bad food, for me I had to stay at the hotel and the only semblance to a real meal was that overpriced rice stuff. The veggies were rather icky I must say.
-
The rice I had wasnt even cooked. ;_; Besides the food though, I thought the Con was amazing. <3
-
Thank you. I've gotta get it back in shape to use my awesome new mic for more VA work. <3<3
The one thing I was confused about was seriously...
$2 for a tiny bottle of soda? I can get a 1 liter for the same price down at 7-11! D: Bwaaahhh...
orz I don't know if I could've lived only on those noodles... So...much...sodium...!!!
-
yeah. see, that was my only real problem with the con. to get decent food, i had to walk all the way to subway, but on new years day, it was closed. i ate almost no solid food that day because of it. DD: but that was the only issue. so yeah. over priced, not so delicious food was overpriced and not so delicious.
-
Oh noes. Stupid Subway. >.>;
-
Holy crap, that was awesome. We had the Slants, we had Sachi, we had A-Key Kyo and they were decent this year, and we had some pretty fun times! Only thing that bothered me in the end was how my Go panel was only 28 minutes long. Mostly cause my panel supplies are in Kumo's shed, but still.
-
I enjoyed your epic 28 minute long panel just as much as I enjoyed our 37 second long Vocaloid dance! Mewcon was very fun for its first year, I miss it x3

Just for all the hard work you put into MEW, you deserved a super long panel. Seriously, this whole thing was incredible for a first con. : D And I will definitely DEFINITELY be back to perform again next year. <3
-
Peter: Great post.
Tofu: I noticed your sig; congrats on being Prog Coord for Mew 2 (couldn't resist).
All: The main interest I had in MEW was the non-anime content. Perhaps emphasizing that angle will draw in bigger and more diverse crowds?
The main reason I didn't go was to be with my partner for the holiday. Likely there were many in that situation. There's pros and cons to the holiday timing.
-
$2 for a tiny bottle of soda? I can get a 1 liter for the same price down at 7-11! D: Bwaaahhh...
Thats why I went down the hall to the vending machine.
as for the food situation I was good. We went to subway once, ate lots of cupcakes, and had pizza for one night. I think on the 1st all I had to eat was cupcakes >_> Could explain why I was so hyper @_@
-
xD mmm cupcakes.
-
I ate a bunch of cupcakes too, so good! I bet Nekopan got the most buisiness of all the vendors xD
-
I think so too. I had at least 12 cupcakes the whole con XD
-
I think I had a few, two garble-blasters and a portal cake.
And three cupcakes with Haley and Bella at Lloyd Center.
-
12 cupcakes beats me I only had 3 :D
-
I think cupcakes are my favorite food ;D
-
Blasphemy and heresy!
Bacon is everyone's favorite food.
-
i'm quite partial to pie, really.
-
lol oh god not the Bacon thing again ;)
I actually didn't have any of the cup cakes this con :O
but I bought sooo much stuff xD
-
I had a bite of a cupcake. But other then that, I brought 1$ to the convention. And I bought a beverage with it.
-
All I bought was a NANA bag and an adorable lolita/maid headdress thing. And cupcakes :D
-
I like sweet food over savory food so cupcake are my favorite :P
-
I like sweet food over savory food so cupcake are my favorite :P
i second the sweet over savory. that's why it's so hard for me to lose weight >.< *is fighting the temptation to eat loads of the truffles left over from christmas...* gahhhh
-
I'm eating jelly bellys right now :P
-
Nope, I must disagree. Savory is my top choice. That's why Kahlan can out-eat me on goodies any day of the week!
-
I don't think I ever really get full of cupcakes >_>
I'm sure after a bunch of them I would.....but it takes a lot :P
-
I made ramen with veggies yum
-
that sounds really good ;D
just like lamb (my dinner tonight)
-
I'm having sushi! Again. But that's because it's a double date with my sister. Other then that though, I'm with Eve. I like savory. Although, I go back and forth. Usually after a savory thing I want something sweet. Or vise versa.
-
Have fun on your date ;)
back on topic though >_> Mew con was fun but it could be better with the suggestions that everyone made
-
I think we should have had a bigger Count Down. ;.;
-
I think there should have been a tv somewhere with the volume muted so we could watch the ball drop (it wouldn't be muted when the ball was dropping :P)
-
maybe next year?
Someone could have dropped some dragon balls ;)
-
i'm sad higuma and i missed it. I had to work >.< Maybe next year
-
It's sounding more impressive, the more I hear about it :)
However, it does sound like there were problems with the hotel or scheduling or? Like panelists being locked out of their panel rooms (not opened in time)? So I was wondering if MEW was booked for the same holiday timeframe and/or for the same hotel again next year already? And congratulations to everyone who did a great job there and to everyone on board for next year!
-
maybe next year?
Someone could have dropped some dragon balls ;)
Haha... YES.
-
I still want to do my Pac-man countdown ball idea. ^_^ I'll make it happen by next year.
-
I'm probably going to make a map of the area for the con next year. Pretty much anywhere you are except in the downtown area of a major city like Portland or Seattle, it's difficult to figure out where to get food, or where to find an ATM machine. I had a lot of help from one of my gaming staff who lived in the area, so with his help we were able to get food at a fairly decent price at Safeway. I still have a whole loaf of bread and half a jar of peanut butter. :D
Anyway, I think that having an area map would help a lot to make the location more tolerable. We'll probably wind up in the same venue or a similarly sized Red Lion venue in Portland/Vancouver next year.
The location isn't really a problem at all. It's less than 10 minutes from where Kumoricon 2006 was and a short walk from where Kumoricon 2007 was.
-
omg, me and a ton of people marched around the first day after the dating game but we failed to find anything still open that wasn't stupidly exspensive lol
so we just ate ramen and tolerated it, so a map would make things MUCH easier :D
-
A map would be nice
and Eve I would love to see the pac man :P
-
Yeah, I'll be sure to perfect the idea and get it made into a real, functioning mechanism. I think everyone can relate to the significance of Pac-man.
-
I could swear there were maps in the programming booklet. Did that not get out to people? Even so, there should have been a map of the con visible. Did you try the info booths?
-
The maps were at reg in the guide first and second day, also on the website and at info desk... I printed the improv program guides with maps at kinkos on the 30th when our original program guides changed their delivery dates to show that they wouldn't be delivered until late D2 of con... no one seems to read the guides though so... next year a big colored map board? :)
-
lol I didn't even know that there were programming guides
-
I saw the program guide but I didn't see a map for outside of the hotel.
-
yeah. same here. i didnt know they existed.
-
The hotel (like most hotels) had a walking map of local food, I know cause I grabbed a couple for some people, I'm pretty sure that the Subway was the closest thing that wasn't in the hotel. Those tend to be more accurate than con maps anyway (I remember a bunch of people getting lost from the bad map/confusing Portland combo during K-con 08)
I really liked M.E.W. con's small-ness, and wouldn't want it to get too much bigger. What I think we really needed was more diversity; we did a good job getting the anime fans in, but when a Sci-fi guy wandered up and asked me for programming suggestions, I really didn't have much to tell him. We also had some problems filling up some panels, which I think a bit of a boost in attendees and diversity would've helped.
I loved our vendors and hope they come back, maybe next time we can find a way to have them closer in to the con- they felt really distant.
Staff radios would be awesome, getting everyone's cell #'s was a pain in the butt (I wound up only having Venton's and Kittyminion's). I know that we were supposed to have them, hopefully next year we actually will.
-
Well, maybe people just aren't ready for our futuristic methods. We'll just have to make sure to get the map printed on some D-size posterboard (23"x35" IIRC) before the con and put those up in some discrete locations. I scaled the map we did have myself using Google Maps and pictures of the space, so it was fairly accurate.
-
while I agree that radio's would definitely help the convention as a whole in regards to communication, being that this con is still quite young, radios can be extremely expensive to purchase. I have been looking into radio rental plans and even that can be a bit spendy.
for example:
Event Communications, Inc.
$9 per radio per day
$35 per radio per week
(includes chargers, extra batteries, headsets, and free shipping to the location)
(buyer is responsible for paying for shipping return fees)
using the weekly rate as that appears to actually be cheaper, and taking into account for 20 radios Iv come to an estimate of $700 for the radios and roughly $100 return shipping. so that's $800 out of the budget just for the radios.
just my 2 cents
-
I agree Teepet, it was too bad panels like the scavenger hunt ended up not having a single person there but then there was the anime dating games that had SOOOO many people in them, I loved how small the con was because by the time you left you had met almost everyone there. but a bit more wouldn't hurt and would remove the bit of down time that happened in the con ^_^
-
I would have come as an artist, but I was scheduled to work on Wednesday and a family thing Thursday afternoon. The other thing was price. $65 dollars seemed a little pricey for the size of the con. Normally I wouldn't blink at the price at a fair or show, but I really doubted I could make that money back due to being the 1st year and the gamble of the date (either being a booming success or lukewarm showing). So instead I had a friend host my cards.
Kinda glad it worked out that way--I only sold five cards. Hardly a windfall. Plus I was told my suspicions were correct, thing were very slow and quiet, minus Nekopan who I heard did really well (though I am sure they did well, not only because of their notoriety, but being one of the few food sources nearby).
I would love to come out to MEWcon another time--but I want to make sure it's not going to be a complete loss business-wise for me. I love meeting people and having a good experience, but I have bills that need to be paid.
I would love to hear from other artists and vendors and their experience there.
-
I still think there needs to be somewhere to watch the ball drop :P
-
I agree Nikki ;D
-
I had fun at MEW Con. Despite the small size, it is still fun going to the smaller panels, hanging out with crowds, and seeing cosplay. And, I will be proud to say someday that I was one of the elite few who went to the very first MEW Con. :) The hotel was nice and I only had to leave the venue once to get food (thanks to splitting with a friend one day and getting a chicken rice bowl in the lobby another, and a raspberry chocolate cheesecake from Neko Pan), and Taco Bell was just a 5 minute drive away. If the con is held in that hotel next year I'll have to try their restaurant. Gaming got off to a great start with a range of old to new systems and there was a decent number of guests for a small con.
I found the online schedule and map! And I identified correctly that the 3D map was done in Google Sketchup! I saved both onto my iPod Touch using AirSharing, so I had them with me the whole time.
-
Does anyone know if they're doing Mew again?
-
They are! I have confirmation from Tanis.
-
YAY.
I'm definitely staffing next year, gonna make Mew2 rock! >:3
-
YAY.
I'm definitely staffing next year, gonna make Mew2 rock! >:3
Mew2= awesome.
-
Mew2... Mewtwo...
hhhhmmmm Pokemon reference, anyone? :D
-
I've always thought of Poke'mon when I think of Mewcon :D
-
I had a great time at Mewcon which I didn't really expect given the small size of the con. I kinda expected to not have a lot of fun since I didn't know a ton of people there but it actually turned into a space that forced you to get to know these people you have probably said hi to at other cons but have been too busy to start conversations with.
A lot of the panels were great, especially the ones that popped up on the fly!
-
I'm not one for panels. I can't sit still long enough at a con >_<
Plus the few I have been to were rather boring, informational, but boring. The Harry Potter one at Mew con was fun but that was because we were screwing around a lot.....and Inu I'm sorry if we messed up your panel >_<
-
xD i went to a few panel. i'm definitely going to MEW next year. lfaskdjf;laksjd
-
: D I'll be performing again next year for sure. I look forward to seeing everyone there again!
-
YAY.
I'm definitely staffing next year, gonna make Mew2 rock! >:3
*shy look* how about Kumoricon???... We needs staff too. (Unless you allready are, cause that would be awesome!)
-
xD i went to a few panel. i'm definitely going to MEW next year. lfaskdjf;laksjd
Yeah I think I'll go again next year. Hopefully the cost will go down too *hint hint* ;)
-
xD yeah. that would be cool.

/me hints hints as well
-
Ok so a lot of people want the price to go down XD
-
xD that would be awesome.
-
It would make it more fun for me. I would have more money to spend elsewhere ;D
-
yeah. money is always an issue at cons. there's just so much to buy
-
At mew con there wasn't a whole lot, I would have and should have bought more cupcakes though ;D
-
xD oh god. you know, i didnt actually get a single one the whole con. i was running around too much.
-
they were really really good. You need to get one sometime.
-
i shall, i shall.
-
Ok so a lot of people want the price to go down XD
What makes you say that? ;)
-
just a hunch ;D
-
They are! I have confirmation from Tanis.
Confirmation from Tanis isn't always definite confirmation, but with the awesome staff team we have put together, we definitely have more to come.
I don't foresee a price drop. In order to drop our prices, we'd need to have much higher attendance. Just make sure you pre-register; that's the best way to save money for the con. That way, you don't have to actually hold onto money for registration as well, so the money you save up is purely con money. Additionally, the hotel rate was lower than the Kumoricon staff rate was. That's a lot of money saved. Share a room with three other people and pre-register and you're paying just $85 or $90 if you're staying the night before AND the night after. That's pretty great considering I spent $160 on Sakuracon 2008 and $170 on Kumoricon 2008, the latter of which I was staff for. (I should be getting $80 from a friend of mine for the room at some point, but I'm still waiting on that 4 months after the fact)
-
Sad times.....I wish the price would drop. Well if it is so expensive due to the low number of people going then why was Akicon almost half the price of mewcon? It was it's first year.....I just don't get it =/
-
There was also 1500 people at Akicon, though. Mewcon was very small. But Akicon was also a day longer then Mew. I don't know, 40$ seems like a ripoff to me. Especially since this year a lot of things that were supposed to happen, didn't. The fact that it's only a 2 day convention and nearly half the events never happened really doesn't appeal to me for it's price. What were we paying 40$ for? I guess I just expected it to be more organized and have more going on for that price.
-

agreed
half the things we tried going to didn't get set up and we were confused and wondered what was going on. there wasn't a whole lot to do, so we ended up going to the mall for a few hours and hanging out in our room a lot. there was also a lot of just sitting around in the lobby. it's fun to hang out with people and such, but when you're paying that much for a con, i guess i'd expect there to be more to do to be worth the money. i understand that it's the first year and there are difficulties, but not that many difficulties... i have a lot more i could say, but i think it's probably been said already.
on a good note, a-key kyo rocked
-
Yeah I could have done everything I did at the con without paying the price. I think it was poorly organized. Again I know it was the first year but these are things you can think about improving for the next year :)
-

I totally agree with this. It seems like it would make more since to have a the cost be lower than Kumoricon's even. For these reasons.
MEW has to (unfortunatly) compeate with Kumoricon who has been running for years. Most of MEW's attendees were Kumoricon attendees as well. I think that if a "New" convention wanted to get more attention and compeate to win they should have a lower price.
Not only would that draw attention to the people with restricted income, but also to the people who are leery of a first year con in the first place.
I think attendance would have been much greater with more publisity and a lower con fee.
I could just hear people now saying things like "Im totally going to check out MEW! I can afford it with my Christmas money!"
Just a personal idea. I realize that as the first year of the con there is a HUGE risk of financial loss with low attendance, and I just have to wonder...was MEW so high priced because it thought it was going to fail? I guess my response to that is Publisity Publisity Publisity!
(Im not trying to be mean to any of the MEW staff as these decisions were in place probably from the beginning, just trying to communicate my observations and hopefully help in some way. :)
-
If the prices were so high because they thought they might fail then I can understand that. I mean that is a rather big holiday that people typically spend with family or at parties so a lot of people might not be able to make it.
-
Its the only way it makes since to me, they did have some noteworthy guests to pay as well.
-
Yeah that's true as well.
-
If the cost would have been a bit more reasonable my friends and I would have come. Since we were more concerned about Sakuracon, we found it more reasonable to put the money towards a three day con.
It just makes me wonder how many more people would have gone if the pass price was lower.
-

That is true. Though I wanted to go to a con anyway, and I didn't want to go alone so I paid for some friends to go....so they didn't even have to pay :P
and does anyone know the head count of mewcon? I'm sure they said it during closing ceremonies....they always do.
-
Maybe they're trying to hide the actual figures from us...
-
Maybe. I haven't seen or heard any of them :P
-
another thing i just thought of is that mew was promoted as being a sci-fi/fantasy/anime con. seemed to me when we were there, everything was just anime. it would have been better/there would have been more to do if they stuck to also having the sci-fi and fantasy aspects there. attendance would probably also go up if they promoted it more as having all three parts and spread the word through each community. i mean, the other cons people go to who also attended mew are just anime/japanese culture, so mew would stand out more if they had something different like they originally promoted, right?
-
Yeah it did seem like there was a lot more anime stuff than sci-fi or fantasy.....though I bet if there were more people then that would change ;D
-

Yeah man. Akicon was all around better advertised, though. I mean, it was also up in Everett, which is near Seattle. Seattle's a huge Cosplay community. However, Portland also holds a large group of Cosplayers, as well. I think if Mew was better advertised, and less expensive then they would have gotten a larger attendance.
-
Pre-reg is the best way to keep a cheap price especially with most local bars and venues charging a lot during New Years for one night events not two day long events. The K-Con special last year was 20$ which is a lot cheaper then at the door price or the price of most any one night concerts or events on that day. You could also become a panelist, volunteer, or staff since all three of those have various happy discounts for helping out the con :) If you've never been any of those its a good way to get your toes wet so to speak for a panel or voluteering at the next KCon after that -hint hint nudge nudge- since I'm sure 2010 Kcon will need just as much or more help as 2009.
On Akicon, it had 1248, a different type of venue in a different town and different backing... even then it was also a little known fact that they needed an enormous amount of attendees just to break even and took a huge risk, a number which MEW could not count on getting given the volatile time of year and since new 'unproven' businesses have to pay ahead of time a lot of our money couldn't spread out for things like Aki's TV commercial to repeat their technique. Perhaps this year and the next will be different in promos. Those sisters running Aki are very very brave and I give them great credit for winning at an enormous gamble but they are more of the exception then the rule for first years.
-edit-
MEW has to (unfortunatly) compeate with Kumoricon who has been running for years. Most of MEW's attendees were Kumoricon attendees as well. I think that if a "New" convention wanted to get more attention and compeate to win they should have a lower price.
Its true that this year's attendees were core Kcon attendees but it is cross genre and a new years celebration and if pulled off right won't need to compete with Kcon... It could even help to draw more people to KCon by reaching into the SF/F communities and introducing manga/anime to a different crowd.
-
I'll make sure to pre-reg then ^_^
I'll try to do it as soon as I know I can go ;D
-
A lot of people keep mentioning organization. Here's a thought to roll your mind around in: what would happen to out-of-con get-togethers if not for Nikkiolie and Oslapedo organizing them? What would happen to Kumoricon's forums if Jeff suddenly was removed? What would happen to the Slants if Simon got lost and never came back? Chaos. Even the most self-sufficient and intelligent components lose a lot of their functions when they don't have someone leading them. MEW Con was supposed to have a Programming Director this year, and that fell through. If you happen to lend your eyes toward my signature, you'll notice that MEW Con does have a Programming Director this year. MEW Con has a Programming Director this year who intends to take his time and carefully organize so that, if he can't make it to the Con for whatever reason, someone else will be there to take his place.
For those of you who don't understand how this will drastically change how well the con is organized, know that the Programming Director acts as a signal more than anything. Like a traffic signal at a busy intersection, the Programming Director provides a final and conclusive direction for the subdepartments of Programming. I can't make the price of the con lower, and it's not my job to find more attendees, but I'll do everything I can to make sure the con runs smoothly. I intend to fully implement elements of communication, fluid process, and quality appeal to make every con experience a good con experience.
Furthermore, please share feedback with the MEW Con team at [ http://www.mewcon.com/forum/index.php ].

Having a program directory would help out a lot. I'm glad to hear that there will be one next year ;D
-
Yay for future organization! Good luck Tofu =D
-
Best of luck. Also feel free to ask us for suggestions ;D

@ Tofu
I fully understand that sometimes things happen. We (the convention goers) never had a clue that you had such important positions vacant for the convention, so we could only reply on what we witnessed at the convention itself. Baised off of my observations, yes, the organization was lacking.
BUT I dont blame anyone for it. I can assume that being a new convention there are LOTS of buggs to work out and rules to set and all kinds of stuff. I admire the fact that the convention even ran when it was missing so many key players! Congrats for pulling it off!
By working at a convention from the ground up you get to see all the little details that go into making it perfect. You get a chance to understand and grow with opinions and new ideas. You get to see those problem areas and know how to fix them the next year (or at least formulate ideas on how to fix them) I almost feel like complaining about the organization of MEW this year is pointless. There is nothing I can complain about that most of MEW's staff probably isnt allready thinking. And as long as you all are thinking "Next year will be better!" it will be.
I wish I could say "sure ill be staff next year!" because I really do want this convention to succeed, (especially the SciFi part of it!) but with a baby on the way I just cant make that commitment yet.
-
Yeah I had no clue that there was no one working programming. That really would have helped out a lot if there was someone there.
With all that known now. I will try to bring as many friends as possible next year.

This is a great opportunity to mention the value of redundancy in staffing. That is to say, every major player in an organization should have at least one "understudy". Someone who knows everything about the position and is ready to pinch-hit at a moment's notice. At the very least an Assistant who, even if they aren't in the know about every detail, knows precisely where to go to find the information and how to operationalize the information if they are needed as a pinch-hitter. Thankfully we haven't needed this within Creation Station for the most part, but we started planning along those lines after Kumoricon 2005 given that I was hospitalized with asthma a couple days before the con. I made it but we realized that if I hadn't, not everyone would have had all the info they needed to do everything. Now we make sure our yahoo group has a lot of transparency and redundancy in planning!
-
yeah that is a very good idea. Always have backups.
-
Its a good Idea but even Kumoricon has issues with this. NO. 1 issue with convention backups= NEED MORE STAFF Lol.
I repeat need more staff need more staff need more staff. :) :) :)
I know that we have many positions still open in our convention let alone a newly forming one. Imagine trying to staff a new convention from the ground up...I dont think their first concern this year was understudys or assistants, I think it was more "Lets get the ball rolling!" :)
-
Yeah, in an ideal world no director drops out, and the assistant is fully preped to take place.
-
I think all cons have an issue with not enough staff.....at least that is the way that it seems to me. I though mewcon had enough staff for the amount of people that were there :P
-
Yeah, there were not a ton of attendies so gobs of staff were not really needed. I kinda liked that for the most part I couldn't tell who was a yoji
-
I think staff should mix in with the attendees. It makes them seem more like people than authority figures.....though I can see that as a problem too.
-
I would be heartbroken if Kumoricon said "Staff must wear staff shirts" and I couldnt cosplay. I think thats why they dont do it, its an Anime con! People want to cosplay!
*Although when im really tired I just throw on a staff shirt and run around not bothering with cosplay*
-
Yeah I wouldn't be a staff if I had to wear a staff shirt. :P
I enjoy cosplay way too much. Plus I just kind of want to screw around at cons, not do work
I presume you meant to type shirt, not a certain 4-letter word that leaves out one of the letters in that word, so I just fixed that for you, since I don't consider "shirt" to be an expletive. :P[/Tofu]
-
40% of the people at MEW were staff.
-
Yeah that is more than enough. Now only if all cons had that many staff XD
-
Lol. Actually, at MOST 20% of people were staff considering MEW's staff was about 40 people (most of whom were security) and there were I believe 200+ people... its small but its not so small as to have THAT much staff percentage wise.
-edit-
If only all con had that many staff in places other than security... I love the security team of KCon, Sakura, and MEW but I wish that we had that number in other departments for all over the convention.
-
I'll ask this one more time, does anyone have an actually number of the people that were there? I mean we have an estimate but I kinda want to know the exact number.
-
No. The book-keeping wasn't thorough enough to track that figure. However, my sister, who spent most of her time working registration, estimated around 200. We didn't even get the badges numbered, so the best anyone can come up with is a ballpark figure. However, based on the number of accounts registered on the MEW Forums, compared with the ratio of Kumoricon Forum accounts to actual attendance, I'd estimate around 350 people attended the convention between staff and attendees. It's not a definite figure; it's only real supporting detail is one ratio.
I think that verbal advertising will be important to MEW 2009's success. Since our audience is largely literary, we'll probably be producing Bookmarks again. If you're looking to build MEW, talk to me, Admin, Verdant Hero, Akio Legend, Lady Savant, or Kitsune about getting some bookmarks, then just hang out in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Manga sections of Powell's, Borders, or Barnes and Noble and just chat with people about the con, then give them a bookmark. A sample conversation might go like such.
"So are you a fan of [genre]?"
"Yeah."
"Have you heard about MEW Con?"
"No, what's that?"
"It's a convention held in the Portland/Vancouver area on New Year's with open gaming, live concerts, exhibitors, panels, dances, and all other neat things. It's kind of like Kumoricon and Sakuracon if you've heard of those, but smaller, with more inclusion of Sci-Fi and Fantasy."
"Sounds cool, maybe I'll check it out."
"Actually, I've got some bookmarks for the con. How about I give you one. It's got the website, date, location, and details on the back, and if you're not interested in the con, it's still a free bookmark."
"Okay, thanks!"
"See you there!"
-
yeah that would be a good idea. It's too bad that no one tracked figures though ;_;
-
well....yojimbo are required to wear the red Haori and not carry prop weapons so the security has to be clever with their cosplays.
-
Well that is no fun, but I guess it does make it a challenge. :P
-
well....yojimbo are required to wear the red Haori and not carry prop weapons so the security has to be clever with their cosplays.
That was a requirement? I just thought we did it because they were cool-looking! And because some of the yoji didn't have staff badges.
-
has the staff already started thinking about things they will do next year? Someone should mention at a meeting that there should be a tv to watch the ball drop XD
-
well....yojimbo are required to wear the red Haori and not carry prop weapons so the security has to be clever with their cosplays.
You can be a wandering samurai without a sword?
-
you could be the merchant from Resident Evil XD
-
Be a bard lol. :D
Nikki, I actually did mention that at the first meeting we had back in May 2008, but it wasn't a top priority this year. It's something to look at this coming year, and I assure you it will be considered with utmost scrutiny come 2011, or whenever the con's total anticipated attendance exceeds 1.5 times the capacity of the Main Events room.
-
The tv for new years eve?
-
Yeah.
On second thought, do you mean a TV to watch them re-show the ball drop in NYC at 12, or do you mean a TV set up to watch the New Year's Celebration in Main Events? I was actually talking about the latter, but we have a couple HUGE TV's we could probably set up in the lobby to watch the NYC ball drop.
-
Well the ball drop would be nice. It didn't really feel like a good countdown at mewcon this year >_>
-
Were you at the Slants concert? I thought their improv countdown rocked xD
-
I wasn't a fan of it. It was too informal >_>
-
The countdown was a concern expressed almost universally on the MEW Con forums following the con. We'll be working towards making sure we have something much more exciting for 2010. If we could find a way to run pyrotechnics in the main events room, you can bet your [bum] we would, but pyrotechnics just aren't a feasibility unless we're somewhere like the Memorial Coliseum. Perhaps we will be able to get some kind of New Year's lightshow put together. With the time of year, we can't rely on the weather to be nice enough for us to have something outside, or we would look into doing so.
-
That would be really sweet. It would make it much much better ;D
-
Countdown would be epic.
And I see Sachi lurking! =D
-
I really think that was one of the major things the con was missing
-
Countdown would be epic.
And I see Sachi lurking! =D
>: 3 In the shadows I hide, waiting for the perfect moment to strike!
Or being too shy to say anything of any merit. orz
-
Lol, the perfect time to strike is 10:30 at night? x3
-
I really think that was one of the major things the con was missing
Yeah, I agree. I heard The Slants did a countdown during their concert, but that wasn't a con-wide event. I think having an accessible, lobby tv is a must, and also someone should do a con-specific balldrop. I'll work on that last one, get my Pac-man going. ^_^
-
A con ball drop would be sweet.
-
For every second of the countdown he can eat another ball, and when it's New Years, he could go "Waakaaa." :3
-HitsHead-
-
Exactly! I know it would be so epic if I only got focused and did it, haha.
-
it would be very very epic :P
-
I may end up doing a really simple prototype for this year, just to get the physics of everything sorted out first, before I leap into heavy technology and all that good stuff.
-
I think its a great Idea! It would be a total "Must See" event given the date and also the Pacman theme!
-
I agree, it would be a MUST SEE! I would always remember it :P
-
If you follow through with this, make sure to keep in touch with me and I'll make sure we can put your hard work to good use.
