I don't care if you've tried with duct tape and came out completely fine, it might not be the same for other people.

This isn't directly related to making costumes, but here is a posing and con etiquette tutorial (http://behindinfinity.deviantart.com/journal/21030596/). It has a lot of useful posing tips and the latter portion contains things everyone should be aware of as a photographer as well as a cosplayer to maximise the enjoyment of everyone at the con. C:
Great idea for a thread!
(Also someone else posted this website (http://www.darkelements.ca/Tutorials/list.htm#top) in another thread - it contains links to a lot of different tutorials.)

Spiking/L Wig Tutorial ^_^
http://twinfools.deviantart.com/art/Wig-Tutorial-L-and-Spiking-104966227
Not sure about that one, honestly the wig looks very inaccurate :/
Too spiky for an L wig o3o
-
Yeah, that's why I also put spiking, because I thought it didn't look like L.
It still is good for a spiking tutorial though. Though the get the point of not using it.
To make up for it, here are two good tutorials!

been wanting to make a photo touch up w/ photoshop tutorial but I'M SO LAZY.
Fffff I could do it if someone let me use one/some of their photos ono Just basic touchups and how to delete things from the background (since that always irks me and is so simple. <8[ )
-
I think it should have its own category. I would define a prop as something you carry (a weapon, for example), and an accessory as something small (like jewelry). There are many tutorials devoted solely to armour-making.

Tim Burton Hatter top hat and costume tutorial from Threadbangers -> http://www.threadbanger.com/tb-projects/episode/THR_20091009
I did my hat with this tutorial (ack my hair looks really bad!) Over all, I think it took us 5 or 6 hours (not including letting the paint dry) to make it, but it looks awesome, and I would totally like to make more!
http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy325/RegalBP18Promo/Alice%20in%20Wonderland/TheHatterateapot.jpg
http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy325/RegalBP18Promo/Alice%20in%20Wonderland/TheHatter-HatCloseup.jpg
Some notes from when my mom and I did mine...
- When choosing the main fabric that will be covering the hat, it is best to find something stretchy, since that will be easier to get nice and flat and not have wrinkles. Same if you do lace over that!
--- I also used scraps of brocade we had laying around under the lace to make it more interesting and colourful.
- Make sure you make your poster board tube has enough room for a wig, the fabric you're using and the massive amounts of glue you might need to make the fabric stay! Mine is a little tight b/c of too much glue! We had to add an elastic band that I then wrap around my pony tail so the hat will stay on. Its better to have too much room and add in an extra band of fabric, than to have a headache after wearing a hat that's too small for 8 hours!
- The lace we used was white, with purple stitching on some parts, so for an aged effect I spray painted the back side of it with gold before we put it on the hat, then I used black paint and splotched patches of it to down tone the gold in some places.
- Don't have hat pins, not a problem! We made ours out of wire, beads, and other trinkets laying around our craft area!

Here's a resin casting tutorial I made. Works pretty well.
Part 1: http://lychee-twist.deviantart.com/art/Resin-Casting-Tutorial-Part-1-164451084?q=gallery%3Alychee-twist%2F109275&qo=15
Part 2: http://lychee-twist.deviantart.com/art/Resin-Casting-Tutorial-Part-2-164451247?q=gallery%3Alychee-twist%2F109275&qo=14
My only suggestion is to put a thin layer of caulking down, tamp that softly into the crevices of your mold with a wet paper towel, and when that's dry, then put the larger mold layer over it.
-
I noticed one thing with the resin jewel making tutorial that I highly advise against: The use of plastic cups.
I tried this on my first cast with resin, and it completely melted the cup. Thank god I thought ahead and wrapped foil around the bottom of it! What I now use is a pop can that's had it's top removed by can opener. It' works fantastically.
-
Does anyone have a tutorial or a pattern for a hood?
-
yes...but i cant find it D: i've been grabbing hoods and using them as patterns for now
-
I actually found this tutorial very helpful for concealing eyebrows and drawing on new ones. You could use this for a variety of different characters (I myself may be using it for an England cosplay.)

Found a nice wig tutorial for making some sort of "ball" or "bun?" that extends further down as well. I read some people were unsure how to do something like this and kinda randomly found it, so I thought I would share.

This is a good tutorial for an easy way to do high, wrapped ponytails with a wig. I'm using it for my Tsubaki cosplay and it works pretty well for her hairstyle.

http://chioky.deviantart.com/art/The-Tip-Top-Hat-Tutorial-103451650
Here's a fine top hat tutorial that Kit Kit sent me before I finished my Professor Layton costume. I didn't end up using it because I couldn't find heavy enough card paper, but it seemed simple enough.
-
Well, for those of you that dont like to pay like 40 bucks for a pair of cat ears, or moogle ears in my situation, heres the tutorial I used to make my ears. http://sedatedartist.deviantart.com/art/How-to-Make-Cat-Ears-Revised-64515635 and here is the finished product of how I made them http://talaredwolf33.deviantart.com/gallery/27756580#/d2qq2vv
Im making a black pair for a Suppi cosplay, and a gold pair that are rounded more for a Kero cosplay for myself. If you want tips, or need help, ask me on dA or send me a message at kirbyness420@live.com

These are great tutorials. thanks for organizing this.

Not really a tutorial, but she does tell you how she did her facial hair, and it looks amazing. Try noting her on dA and ask her for some pointers.
http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=§ion=&q=facial+hair+cosplay+tutorial#/d37qkhn
-
Spirit gum is the death of rainbows... but, it gets the job done. From my experience with the underworld's glue, don't use a lot of it. I've known people who just smear their face with it and it takes the skin right off. Other than that, put the gum on the hair and stick gently but firmly. We've always had pre-shaped stuff so we've never had to make our own beards or whatnot.

At the end of that post, there's a link to charmseed's Sailor Moon wig tutorial. I used that, which is the same process for the Chibi Moon wig for the most part, and it worked great.
My only advice is that if you think you can straighten long wavy wefts for Sailor Moon's pigtails and NOT have it be a huge pain in the ass, you're wrong. So very, very wrong.
-
Anyone got a tutorial for sewing a jacket? ^^"
-
No, but Joann's usually has killer pattern sales regularly where you can get an $18 pattern for $3. You can try going to Goodwill or Value Village and see if they have a book on tailoring. That might help. I found one the other day at the Goodwill in Tigard and didn't buy it. It was old, but it had some good pointers.

Chelsea, you would know. At least your wig looked fabulous.

I found a fabulous site for making Maka's (from soul eater) scythe! Pure epic-ness i tell you, pure epic-ness!

-
hwyy , anyone have tutorials for girls cosplaying guys ? like the make up aspect?
..
also a good binding tutorial D; the one on there is no longerr
-
CLAP_attack, here's a pretty good binding tutorial -->http://the-savage-nymph.deviantart.com/art/How-to-cosplay-a-guy-58817845
-
...
For me, that is not a problem. *sigh*
-
Trust me, it's not a problem you want. :/
-
Grass is always greener on this one, I think. It makes it VERY hard to cosplay women when they're 3-4x your size. Even Super Sailor Moon required some creativity, and she's not even that ridiculous (unless you're talking legs and pelvis. I don't think any of the Sailor Senshi have proper pelvises).
-
True, I suppose both sides have their problems. Although personally I would think stuffing would be more comfortable and easier than binding. (And yes, Senshi anatomy is INSANE. When I was trying to decide which one to cosplay, I was thinking 'I like 'em all! I'll just pick the one my body type I is most similar to!' and then I dug up some pictures comparing them and I was like :/ whatever I'm just doing Uranus. They're all so much fricking taller than I am...!)
And, to maintain some semblance of on-topic-ness (at 3:00 am no less, what is this 'sleep' you speak of?), here's a big list of helpful tutorials on dA. --> http://paopudestinypro.deviantart.com/gallery/10953261#/d2qmoad. Lots of links, organized by specific anime plus some general purpose ones.
-
thanks for the link , it makes soo much sense to what I was doing wrong.
D; HNNG. cosplayers have the detication for morphing their bodies to shapes they weren't born with D;
-
Yeah. That's for sure. Both men and women have that problem. Some guys have to really work hard at buffing up for some roles.
Hey, it just hit me. If you guys ever have something small that you need to make metallic looking, try insulation tape. It's basically a very thin metal tape that comes in a roll like duct tape. I would imagine that it'd be easy to lie one piece next to another to get no seams, but I've never tried. The tape, being metal, doesn't take to dome and sphere shapes all that well, but once you get it on something and polished out, it looks pretty good!
I used it for making a mini bus stop model for my class. I wrapped it around dowel rods hot dog style with good results.
-
How easily can you cut it? Because I have a cosplay I've been working on as kind of a pet project that needs some little metal circles and some shiny earrings on it.
-
It's super easy to cut. Put the tape on craft foam first, though. The tape itself doesn't support anything on it's own. I cut mine with either an x-acto or scissors, and i'm leaning towards scissors. Just don't use nice, expensive ones otherwise they might dull out.
-
Awesome, thanks. It looks like it'll work great. I need it around a mold anyways, it's just that the earrings I need to make have to be clip-ons since my ears aren't pierced so I want them to be as lightweight as possible.
-
(https://www.kumoricon.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.venturetape.com%2Fimages%2FP%2F3520CW.jpg&hash=f7650741a9064a6f44322319658d2892b47f1d73)
There's a picture of the stuff so you can see how it's easy to bend and shiny. It does have a bit of a brushed metal look to it, though.
It should hopefully work for you. If you have some sort of smoothing tool, even a smooth rock, that will probably help you press out any wrinkles.
-
I have some tutorials to add:

I just made two tutorials and posted them. The Senshi hip roll tutorial isn't great. I'll make another one in due time if no one understands what I'm talking about.

anyone know a tutorial for like .. making life sized things ? or however you call it ..lol
this is what i want to make.

Permission denied, Clap. Can you try posting again?
-
http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/files/costumes/2134/35391/chuck.jpg
Hopefully this works .. But yeah lol ;;
-
Oh! Just make him out of fleece :) If you don't want to sew, you can always paper mache a balloon for his head for starters. A balloon would probably be real size for that guy... what's his name... Chuck.
-
Well since im going to wear it .. I want it sturdy.
Fleece is good ?
I was thinking wire to form the shapes but i dont want it to bend much.
-
OOOOOh! You're going to be Chuck! Okay! Well, that changes a lot of things!
Probably start with a cardboard frame, maybe some chicken wire or paper mache over that, and I would use fleece since Chuck is a stuffed toy, isn't he? You could even glue on a working zipper if you wanted.
You're not going to be able to do his proportions unless your cosplay's head is about five feet tall and four feet across. Go for what you can. There's a Gir who's popped up at K-Con the past two years with squeaker feet that has an unaccurately sized head, but it doesn't matter. It's still a great outfit.
-
Ahhh chicken wire! Thats what i was trying to think of xD
That he is, a soft material is what i am for.
Yeah , im planning to do the best i can so it matches up with my body.
Im sorta aiming for a clean ' cosplay that looks good and difficult lol.
Like the folks that do the furries almost xD;; or the akamaru from naruto every year.
I was thinking on hand making the larger part of the zipper since they are biiig.

I am working with Styrofoam (extruded polystyrene) and need a good (and not too expensive) method for sealing the foam before I paint it. Does anyone have any good methods? With easy to find materials. thanks
-
I read that using 5 coats of mod podge and then using an acrylic would work find. then afterward sealing it all up with a layer of watered down Elmers glue. Has anyone used this method? Also what is the dilution of the elmers glue?
-
Elmer's glue when dilluted is usually just to get it kind of runny, not to completely water it out. I would ballpark it until it's the consistency of whole milk. Worst comes to worst you can always add more glue.

Cool, thanks for the info. I also discovered that super glue and Styrofoam don't work well together. Thanks goodness I tested it on scraps first. :D i will see how gorilla glue works out tonight.
-
IIIII don't know if gorilla glue is a great idea with that one. It puffs up a LOT when it dries, and it dries very, very hard making it difficult to sand down. It very well could melt the styrofoam, too. If you need to stick balls together, hot glue and a small wooden rod will work.
I don't know what you need to do exactly, but what I did for my pokeball was cover the styrofoam ball in a thin but even layer of Paperclay, sanded it smooth, spritzed it with sealant, and then painted it with no problem whatsoever.
My method is described in the Pokeball tutorial above.
-
A cheap thing you could do is paper mache (flour and water mixed) over the top. Gorilla glue is not going to work for what you need. You can't sand it if it is uneven. I use several layers of glue on craft foam and it works well but it isn't nearly as porous as Styrofoam.
-
Good idea!
There's a stove top method for flour and water paper mache that's a little more involved, but when it dries, it dries much harder than normal paper mache. If you can blend in super finely chopped up newspapers, that could probably make a pretty durable material for those styrofoam balls that can be sanded. Dirt cheap to do, too. If you've got a food processor, I would chop shredded newspaper clippings in that. Blender might work if you put it on high and then add the water then flour. Just be sure to really clean it out well.
-
Thanks for the info. I'm using the gorilla glue to to put together my cross punisher. But I also need to add a couple of small things to my sister's Riku Keyblade. So I was testing out the glue last night and yes the stuff really puffs out.
Side note:
When I put together my cross punisher I will need a really strong bond over a large surface. I've made two crosses and will put them together with a handle wedged between the two pieces in the center of the cross. If you can tell from the pic of Wolfwood below. I will have to get pics on here as soon as soon as I'm done with it. I've been documenting the process. Thought I would add a tutorial. What do you think about a tutorial?
-
Honestly, Drauska, I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean with two crosses and wedging stuff, but it never hurts to have another technique out there!

::) Will do lychee. I'm not the most articulate person so as soon as I get it done there will be a stellar tutorial ;D

Hey, does anyone have a tutorial on how to make a pattern? I've got a project and I need to make my own pattern for it. Or at least how to modify an existing pattern, cause it's for a full body suit but the shape is weird.

As promised here is a crappy tutorial for the cross punisher. I'm not as computer savey as the majority of the world so this tutorial is in segments because the forum only allows attachments of a certain size and I had to make my files smaller.

Here's a tutorial on how to make Barret Wallace's gun-arm.
It is very text-heavy, unfortunately. Step-by-step and all that, but I don't have many helpful pictures. I will eventually be remaking it and when I do I will make a more useful tutorial, but until then, I figured this might be good for someone.
