Some of my friends and I are thinking of starting a Cosplay Cafe. It would be your regular coffee shop accept that you'd be served in people in Cosplay.
We would also have other things like a gamer room. It would be filled with "gaming computers" X-Boxes and other consoles. We would also have anime viewing nights where we would pick an Anime and stay up all hours watching the whole series!
Just wanted to get some input!
Thanks,
PK (AKA Mr_Mustash)

OMGeez! I don't live in portland, but i'm close by and i'd come as often as possible! Along with all my anime friends! That's funny a friend of mine and I were thinking about having one wherever we are living after highschool or college. But that sounds really fun!
-
Sounds great, but thumbs down to the video games - they will attract teenagers. I'm kind of afraid of them.
-
i vote yes - sounds like a fun idea. :)
-
I love you o_o
YES! OMGYES!
I'd definitely come ;) It'd be the perfect place for me to meet up with some of my friends~
-

lol, i think cosplaying+coffee+anime will attract teenagers anyway. I'm 16 and I would go with my friends
-
hum... I'm only 13 ^-^
But I won't be a hassle! I promise!!
-
Only 15 here...but...but i will be polite. ^-^
-
yeah go for it and have Senior night ware every one is 30 to 40.
I want to open a nerd cafee ware all the tables look like R2D2 with the serving trey and the waitresses are dresses like Uhura from Star Trek. A room for video games and one for RPG games.
wasent there some one talking about this in portland a few months ago and some one called Animeshop girl in seattle wanted to open one
-
yeah, i hear it's open but i've never been there.
here's a link to their myspace:

Yes and for the gaming table I want the 12 by 5 foot 3 inch thick granett slate they had on display at Jerry hardware it still had roughed out edges but an almost mirror polish and would look Quatro Cool (thats one more then trey) on a rough timber frame.
-
"This is our Dungeons and Dragons room."
What part of your parents' house is that located in?
-
How do I sign up? I would love to work at a place like that.
-
Well, I wouldn't be a regular (I don't go down to Portland that often), but I would check it out and if I liked it, maybe make a point of stopping in when I AM in the city.
Sounds like a fun idea.
-
"This is our Dungeons and Dragons room."
What part of your parents' house is that located in?
The Basement.
But honestly a cosplay café in Portland sounds fairly cool!
I'm not a coffee drinker, (I Know and I live in the Northwest too!)
But I would definitely have to check it out!
-
that sounds fun. You cannot be scared of teenagers now..If they go and hang out at a anime cafe they are probobly harmless.
I would go..I would want to work there...and have everyone see me..Cause I am too cute..and obviously into myself. XD
-
it would be fun, i'd hope you's serve thing other then coffie cuz lots of people no like
-
The more I hear about it the cooler it sounds!
As for the location, it probably would be better for business to put it in a more populated area (although I’m not sure if it would be enough to cover the higher rent cost), but I think somewhere kind of out of the way would have a nice feel to it.
So I think it will be cool no matter where you put it, so long as I can get there!
-
Most of the Asian community in Portland is moving out of Chinatown and over the 82nd avenue. I've seen some evidence of this and read about a lot more. I think that it wuould be great for you guys to get one of the shops in the Fubon shopping center.
I would visit on a regular basis if it was open late enough. My friends and I are nightowls and they all drink coffee.
If you make sure to have a wide selection of tea then I'm sure you'll do well.
I can actually imagine having a deal with certain distributors to have their characters be the ones serving. You could actually arrange it so that there was a set of costumes for each week or so, like FMA Tues-Thurs, Naruto Friday and Saturday, Ouran on sundays, etc.
Edit: Side note I forgot to mention. My favorite webcomic, Conscrew, just started a new storyline about starting up a restaurant! Here is the beginning of the story!
http://www.conscrew.com/index.php?strip_id=769
There's two sides to the venture of course. Getting a coffee shop, and then getting the rights/materials/people for the costumes.
-
Wow you're very ambitious! :D I would definitely bike to it from PSU, lol all my money would go to there X3.
I would work there too! :D!!!
for some reason I'm imagining anime characters on roller skates. Lol "Raito! come back!!!"
-
Oh my goodness~ I'm so glad somebody else wanted to do this too. ^_^ We are wanting to do something of the Maid Cafe / Ridiculously-cute-bakery theme. I think that it would be hard to do on its own, but maybe we could go in together and do something together? ^_^
Plug:: http://www.myspace.com/nekopanbakery ::pluG
I would love to get together and talk shop!! PM me and let's scheme. :)

-
Cosplay Cafe + Portland = Epic Win. I'd give money to that place. My humble request is catgirl maids/schoolgirls/lolitas that are heavily armed.
-
Hey, a cosplay cafe in Portland, that idea would rock!
Would there be waitresses dressed in Anna Miller's uniforms? *kitty face* (Look it up.)
-
Serving caffinated beverages to an otaku while dressed up as hot schoolgirl. What could possibly go wrong :P
The idea is interesting and I'd definitely go out of my way to see it. I just wonder how long it'd be able to stay in business, considering the amount of money and effort it would take to keep the cosplay angle going with things like specialized laundry for certain fabrics and having to deal with the costumes themselves for the employees.
None the less, it sounds fun
-
heck yes!
I'm moving to portland next Fall... do you know how great it would be to have a cosplay cafe?!?!?! I could meet other cosplayers such as myself! It could be a great way to bring all of us even closer together~*
LUUUURVE HAHAHA!
-
Yeah, uniforms and such would cost how much?
But I would definitly want to work there! lolx
-
i would like to see this acutaly happen some time because over the years this is the 3rd or 4th time this idea has poped up and yet no cafe :(
-
yeah this sounds dagerously like a nerdier backspace.
i think something like that would have the potential of working in portland. you would probably be better off with not going all out cosplay (real characters) and going with cute uniforms, and maybe doing a thing like catgirl fridays or something.
the location would be key. but i would stay the hell away from 82nd area, no one goes over there, and while you might get some very specific people who know its over there buissness, ou wouldn't get any reputable walk by traffic. you need a local with lots of walk by, somewhere in the belmont area or just a busy part of close in se would be advisable (if not down town) ive seen a couple of lots openin up recently. in fact there is one of those new gray percelle buildings going in on like...26th and devision. right kitty corner form a neiborhood sushi place. i think you wouldent want to deck it out so bad that it would be off putting to "normal" people. get the kitch goin, lots of old movie posters and toys and crap on the walls. and youd have a place that people would come for. also, the nearer you are to a high school the better, lunch rush, after school etc.
-
yeah an all out cosplay seems...iunno the wprd, but I agree with Pinku.
for waitresses be cat girls, or bunny or something? possibly a choice?
and Yes Jaz is right, this idea has come up a few times in thepast and it just dissapeared, and idea was all it was.
How would you plan out the uniforms? Like the cost and who is going to make them? So does this mean the employee must pay the intire 'who knows how much' cost for the uniform?
Also, Are all uniforms going tolook the same? I think they should.but be different in a way, like each waitress have a different color or color scheme? Kinda like a Tokyo Mew Mew thing? (still talkin' about colors)
You are also going to want something flashy, what I am imagining is kinda like a place for boba? But thatseems alittle...kinda over done?
a place that is 'different' catches many peoples' eyes. Not just an idea, the look matters by ALOT. Like clothing, people pay attention to brand, but no matter who it is by, if it is ugly, boring, or plain, they are not going to buy it. So maybe be white( like a PURE white) and bright colors? Clears and translucents, weird lookin' lights? lolx
-
exsactly,
and i mean, as far as the uniforms go, i mean if this really came about, i would make them for material cost and free coffies.
-
yeah,
i say if youre serious about this go for it. small buissness loan this thing into exsistence. pick a roaster, look into used apliances, get a buissness licence. all thiese things are far more accessable than people think.
-
I was thinking about the 82nd area, but a few of my friends also told me not to go there. So my options are still open.
Yeah, 82nd is a really, REALLY bad place for anything nerd related. It's pretty much a trash hole once you go far down enough on either end. Really just a bad place. Not the right people either. I always thought Hawthorne would be a great place for this.
-
yaya. Hmm how much would the uniforms be approximetly and such.
Also a design for the uniforms, so many types of uniforms *0*
I really do hope that this goes through , sounds phunn.
Location has ALOT to do with it.so be careful. lolx
-
i agree entirely, anything in the clinton to stark neighborhood would be infinitely better than 82...full of..unsavory characters.
-
And avoid Killlingsworth and Albina lolx
-
I expect a retail space such as that would go for at least $16-$20/sf/year on a triple-net lease arrangement. Therefore the space alone would end up costing at least $32-40,000 annually, and would likely edge closer to $50,000 when utilities, insurance, and taxes are included. Then there'd be the overhead of running a business. Do you think such a business could earn about $7,500+ in gross receipts per month? I'm guessing this is the minimum it would take for the project to succeed.
-
I think thiscafe could make alot of money acually, and be okae'. You just need to pin point intrest of many people, not just otaku and such. So again, appearance is VERY important. and advertising can be easy.
-
the profit margin on coffee is extremly high, you get some decent barristas and youll get alot of walk in traffic pretty much anywhere in portland. people will generally go the the coffie shop closest. and if the place has wifi and good tables even better, especially if something makes it different from the other 15 cafes in a one mile radius. also if its open later than most places.
there arent many hang out places in portland for the 18-20 crowd. i remember when i had just graduated from highschool there were like 3 places in town we could go to after 9. the hotcake house, the fireside, the pied cow (which for about a year was 21 and over in the garden, which pissed us off), and like...the park. im over 21 now but i still feel that there should be more safe things for that age group to do at night.
and a place like this would be poised to cater to that buissness, especially in the summer.
-
yesh late nights are a good thing lolx
-
that is so awesome! you're very good at planning things out. ^_^ go you!! i'll definately be one of your first (and perhaps best) customers!
-
And don't forget on the week end no cover charge for girls...with glasses
-
Then it seems you are getting somewhere!
What are your ideas about uniforms?
-
you sound surprizingly on top of this. most of the time when a post like this happens its someone just makin **** up and nothing would come of it.
im serious about those uniforms though.
-
Since my mom is the co-owner..... I would like to suggest you contact Oregon Coffee Roasters when it comes to your coffee needs. The company is based in North Plains and services coffee shops all throughout the Portland Area.
-
awe man, thats vital information. are you graduating this year, and this is lie your after school plan?
-
Yah, i'm graduating early from my highschool and then taking 2 classes at PCC next year to get my High School Degree.
But even though i'm young, i'm ambitious and would LOVE to get this project off the ground.
we all know it's about surounding yourself with a staff of anime Maids
-
questions :
- do you have a name for it? or is it just going to be 'cosplay cafe'?
- ...would you hire me? XD

o0o0h I want to work there toooo!!!!
we can be a big cafe familia? lolx
-
I havent been seen on these forums since last kumoricon and with sakuracon looming ever closer I have decided to visit again. And honestly, if you made an Anime Cafe I would be there all the time. Ive been waiting for one for years. Im 19 and I can say that I know quite a number of people who would love to hang out there. Most of them around my age. I know I could get xaam and some others. Anyway lots of luck and PM me when you get the space. I will do everything I can to support an Anime Cafe in Portland. I mean really? Is there a more suited city than Portland for an Anime Cafe? We're just jazzy like that.
Also as a small tip, if you want to attract the 17+ group, try getting a spot near a college. College students love to lounge around after classes to relax a bit. I think there would be moneys near any college. Prefurably a rather libral one. Anyway, good luck.
-
haha yeah. what he said. but if you trying to appeal just to a specefic age group...umm..yeah.
If you want to make money you gotta get a variety, so ayummy in the eyes of many huh? lolx
Don't be boring, and sterotypical lolx X3 But with everything you seem on top of things. :3
-
A couple video monitors on the walls showing episodes of Sailor Moon and some of those ridiculous Japanese game shows would add to the ambience. And don't bother with LCD or plasma sets! A couple of second hand Dell tft monitors, rigged to a cheap linux video client from free geek could create the same look and feel for a tenth of the cost.
-
that would be...intresting..lolx
I..wouldn't..but um uh <.< >.>
>.< QUU!!! sorry neh'.
-
I'd vote "yes," but I live in Springfield, so I can't guarantee I'd make it up there often enough to contribute at all to the success of such a place.
But it would be awesome if there was one. I would definitely make the trip up to Portland to check it out, if one actually succeeded.
If you do it, though, remember: location, location, location. It has to be in a place where teenagers could freely access -- meaning not in the bar district, somewhere safe, and near public transportation routes -- and where you would be free to do whatever you want with it.
Best of luck. :) If you do it, be sure to get the word out amply. That means a booth at Kumori Con, at least!
-
If you made an anime cafe' I would love you forever. and ever.
but it has to be somewhere I can get with the public busses, I'm not quite old enough to drive.
-
I havent been seen on these forums since last kumoricon and with sakuracon looming ever closer I have decided to visit again.
Woah hey welcome back!!! Are you going to be at Sakura Festival again?
I would definitely be all for a cosplay cafe. I think depending on what is served it could really draw alot of attention!
-
i want an excuse to wear this outfit... (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=986300)
lol.
-
Woah. Your cute...
-
Woah! This sounds like such a good idea! You have another employee right here!!! I have no problem putting on a maid or bunny suit and serving drinks. I'm in Salem right now, but by the end of summer I'll be in Portland/Beaverton (I'm applying to Portland Art Institute, so I'll definitely be in the area). But yeah, I really want to be in on this. If I get into P-Ai, I'll put flyers around campus and stuff. I doubt it wil be hard to get people from my Game Art & Design classes to come to a Maid Cafe, haha.
-
I designed uniforms..hehe lolx
Bunny and Kitty girl maid waitressy thingy peoples. woooooooooow
I could see it being a big success though. lolx
-
I'll work there! You don't even have to pay me, I'll just kind of hang around and do the dishes.
-
ATTENTION!
canada opens first cosplay cafe. (http://theinfomaniac.blogspot.com/2006/12/canada-opens-first-cosplay-caf.html) <--an article
-
So cool.. too bad it's in Canada.
-
Yeah, I understand. :)
But it's interesting to see maid/cosplay cafes outfit of Japan ~ :3
-
Go for it!! :D
I'm definately going to find a butler cafe when I go there ... >D ♥ haha!
-
If/when i got to Japan this summer I'm going to need to find one! lol
Search for them in Akihabara. But I will note they are hard to find.
(No I didn't go into one :P )
-
Go for it!! :D
I'm definately going to find a butler cafe when I go there ... >D ♥ haha!
yes we will only allow you to go to the nice new butler clubs, you stay out of the ones ware the host at the door is dressed in a lime green leasure suit
-
If someone actually starts a coffee shop like this, please please PLEASE hire me? XD
I'm a good cross-player, and I would be a good cosplayer for a shop. >_<
Skinny pretty boys that can make themselves look like women if need be are in demand, yes? :o
@ manekineko: Oh, neat~! I go to Portland Ai right now. I'm in animation. : )
Good luck coming here! n____n
-
Irate Bedlam: Thanks! I'm actually touring this Friday. So I guess it will be popular amongst some of the crowd at Ai then.
If I was hired, I'd hang out off the clock all the time.
-
Manekineko: Oh, that's very neat!
So you are going into Game Art?
If so, you'll be learning a looot of the same stuff I learned!
It's hard, I won't lie.
(And I suck at it.)
But oh well, I try and will keep trying my hardest!
Haha, I like college. This term I only have to go Monday through Wednesday. So I totally have this Friday off. XD
Heehee, it would be so cool to know someone at school from the forums, though!
If we notice each other we should totally say hi &stuff! n____n
And omg, so would I. It would be like my workplace was a con! :XD
Only, people came to stare at us.
Wouldn't we feel popular! :XD
-
yes we will only allow you to go to the nice new butler clubs, you stay out of the ones ware the host at the door is dressed in a lime green leasure suit
i'll keep that in mind. ^___^
-
i told my dad about this, he seems convinced it would do far better as a bar. and wants me to do it....wtf?
-
yes we will only allow you to go to the nice new butler clubs, you stay out of the ones ware the host at the door is dressed in a lime green leasure suit
Oh, please - and add the beige suede elbow patches and fringes on the lapel pockets!!!
- G

It's not a matter of fashion. There have been host clubs for women in Japan for years of different sorts of "services". The ones ware the guy at the door greeting potential customers looks like a slick young pimp or hustler he is a slick young pimp or hustler. The new Butler Cafes are a safer bet for any one under 30. A lady friend sent me a Clair magazine about the sad ladies in Japan who are 30 and never been on a date so she wants me to move to Japan and open a club to help them.
-
well... i kinda wanted to keep the place family friendly
oh no i agree, my dad is crazy and i was shareing.
-
Wow. That's in Canada? They sure are going for image. Personally, I would rather see a mixed bunch, rather than all Japanese waitresses. But that's just me, I guess... I think Japanese and Caucasian women are equally beautiful, just in different ways.
They have those in Akihabara?... Heh, I should have found one while I was there. Just because it's so over the top. I like seeing the most extreme aspects of a culture... just so long as it doesn't involve promiscuity, porn, binge drinking, illegal drugs, or smoking. ><; (Yeah, I know. I ruin all the fun.)
See, thats a maid cafe. I want a cafe that is open to both genders... if that makes any sence.
It makes COMPLETE sense for America (and Canada, for that matter). Largely because you would be encouraging cosplayer patrons, yes?
I suggest having a small souvenir to hand out to customers who come in costume! Or perhaps a small discount... like 5-10% off their meal. :) Whichever you like best.
It would be similar to this one 50s restaurant called the Ford Grill Cafe, here in Springfield, that used to play "Hand Jive" on the jukebox every 45 minutes or so. All the servers would run out and do the hand jive, and gave out stickers to anyone who got up and danced with them. :) (Sadly, they got bought out; it's no longer the Ford Grill anymore... :( )
Go for it!! :D
I'm definately going to find a butler cafe when I go there ... >D ♥ haha!
LOL!
I am definitely in support of your search. I don't have a maid fetish, but butlers are damn cool. ;)
(not that I have a butler fetish, either. Hmm.... that's an odd thought. <.<; Especially since I'm straight... that would mean women in butler costumes, don't you think? With fake mustaches, even...)
Edit:
I spoke too soon. I hadn't seen the part about the actual Butler Cafe in Japan. I was thrown off because in most anime, the butler is a grey-haired man with a mustache. In fact, I have yet to see it any other way.
I still think it's awesome, though.
-
They have those in Akihabara?... Heh, I should have found one while I was there.
I had to look really hard for one. I was wandering around Akihabara for about 30-60 minutes before I finally found one. Granted I just saw a sign in a doorway about 10 feet back from the street.
I know I've seen some with big open windows on a TV special in Japan.
I suggest having a small souvenir to hand out to customers who come in costume! Or perhaps a small discount... like 5-10% off their meal. :) Whichever you like best.
They also showed on the TV special different souvenirs you could get. Some included a button, cup, and other trinkets with a waitress' (first) name and picture on it. You could also pay to have a waitress sit down and talk with you for X minutes. Seriously.
-
This is starting to sound more like a Brothel... lol
Trust me, the thought crossed my mind plenty of times.
But fortunately the one with all the souvenir stuff was also the one with the big open windows.
-
So, is this actually something that might happen?
I mean, does someone actually have the money to start a formal buisiness? o____o
It sonds like quite an endeavour...[/size]
-
like people have said this is something that has come up a couple of times. if this particular one dosent come to be in the next year or so, i might look into doing something like this. probably toned down though since i wouldnt want o scare away normal people (or make them think they are unwellcome since they arent nerdy enough) cause i was having a conversation with my parents about this thing and they said as soon as i graduate from college (in like a year or so) they would back me on something like this (i mean i have a couple other ideas too, including a retail store and a laundry/coffie place)
-

How would you tone it down if people are in costume?...
I mean, I can understand the idea of toning down other elements, but...you're either in costume or you're not, for the most part.
Heh, unless you want all the servers to wear Daddy-hats, or something.
Incidentally, is there any issue with copyrights? Like, using a costume of a particular licensed series in a money-making establishment?
-
as far as "toning down" i mean the abstract ANIME COSPLAY OMG aspect, it has alot to do with the decor (going with more of a kitch, older toys more abstract posters etc rather than with even the mainstream of the subculture) also, where you could host costume nights you dont need the servers/wait staff/barristas/ whatever in COSTUME per se, just in cute stuff. kinda more along the lines of cute inspired uniforms rather than specific characters. and modeling the esstablishment more after the idea (for example IN anime) of what the cafe shoudl be like, the kinds of food and more ecelctic menue in the cooler (bottled imported tea ramune etc) as well as the fancy sorts of snacks you might want available say...at a loli meet up. + wifi and bubble tea.
but again like everyone says its probably not going to happen, even though i think that portlands demografic is begging for it, esspecially if it was open close to 24 hours.
-
heres a better question who dosen't want a anime caffe in portland?
-

Okay, those are some interesting ideas. I wasn't sure whether the idea of a cosplay cafe really could be toned down to be more mainstream, but if you think you can do it, I am eager to see it. :) I agree with the thought of toning down the audience-specific posters. Finding aesthetically pleasing posters that are close to the usual restaurant decor could be a better design choice, regardless -- take for instance Red Robin's movie poster idea, where not all of the posters are actually familiar to all Americans (and in any case people don't necessarily look directly at them).
Oh, also: no matter who tries this idea, if you serve katsudon, I will love you forevah. <3 (not sure how much non-Westernized Japanese food you would serve, but that's one of my favorites)
-

at that point your turning into a full blown restaurant and need way more permits etc and that would be alot more riskey. at first anyway. i mean i think IF i was doing something like this the only food would be sammiches and baked good from some local fancy bakery. like the pearl bakery or pix or some small french style bakery that i dont know about. or even....oh i cant remember the name of the place, but its a vietnamese bakery and the actual place is on powell i think somewhere, but they sell thier stuff over by the deli at uwajimaya. thier sweet breads are REALLY good and fluffy.
-
Actually, to some degree there is a cosplay tavern in town... OK, it's not anime themed, BUT you can still show up as an anime character. :D
It's the Pirate's Tavern (http://piratestavern.com/). It's a pirate themed Vegan restaurant / bar. First FRIDAY of every month is "Dress like a Pirate night" and the band Spinnaker plays :D On St Patrick's day, they also did the Dress like a Pirate night, so we showed up as crew from the Sylverna (Last Exile...yeah, they're loosely defined as pirates, so it works). I think it would be funny to have various anime pirates show up next pirate day, which will be 6 April. :D
Details:
100% Smoke free
Family Friendly (meaning under 21s allowed as it's a restaurant and bar)
Frequent live entertainment in evenings
100% Vegan food
Organic Beers and wines. :D
Location: 2839 NW St Helens Rd, Portland, OR (off HWY 30, not too far from I-405 bridge)
-
that sounds awesome, and far far from me. also i question a pirate bar with no meats. i like vegan food, but i like it best when places have mutiple options.

Forgive me; I'm clueless about such things as restaurant permits. I do, however, understand that a full-blown restaurant would be more expensive even without having to worry about permits. Please do not take my cravings as anything resembling business advice. :D Besides, if I drove all the way up to Portland, it most certainly wouldn't be for the katsudon; there are more important things in life. Like dressing in silly clothing. <3

Main stream huh? It'll get there. It is all about trend setting you guys! lolx
things start out small and then BOOM into action! I know alot of people that come from different "cliques" I think most of my friends would go..except for maybe the cheerleaders and jocks.. But they go to StarBucks. lolx
But any-hoozie, I am sure if serivice is good (yeeeeeeeah and kyuuuute, sorry to say you guys..but it matters in this age..Iunno 'bout you, but I wouldn't go to a strip club of ugly people SORRY not very nice, but I ain't gonna lie), so is food and the enviroment is phunn, friendly, and can tickle everyone fancy!
-
You've already got at leased 15-20 costumers (Including me) who'll promise to be regulars (Me again) and bring friends (not me I swear! . . . ok me). c'mon! go for it!
-
I'm. If you're looking for workers or Consultants... I'm a good Candidate. 1.5 yrs Coffee, 1.5 yrs in Sushi Restaurant, Worked as Semi-Voluteered Constaff, and used to Organizing Anime Festival at my old High School. Its interesting to see people organizing a simple Spring School Festival.
I would suggest more a Cafe House. Half Cafe, Half Coffee House. More well rounded and easier to deal with customers and insane right wing customers at moments.
-
I would invest in it. lets talk.
-
All I gotta say is if you need a Chef I am your man considering I am going through Culinary school right now and yeah I am a avid anime watcher and con goer... ontop of all that I use to work for my dad who ran a anime business so yeah... HIRE ME!!!
also having been to the maid cafes and cosplay cafes in tokyo.... you my friend are bringing crack to Otaku males....once the otaku male comes near your business they will not leave...
-
if anyone actually has the start-up money for such a project, it could be interesting... making it appeal to the general public might be hard. i don't think it could be supported by just otaku.
if miss Neko_Chan ends up going to culinary school, she and i will be opening a very elegant rococo/victorian/lolita-themed dessert place. i think i'll probably just buy an old house and put in a commericial kitchen or something. renting is such a headache!

:D it will be the best tea house is the entire world.
-
wow never knew so many people are going through culinary school besides me on here.... AWESOME
-
Can everyone imagine.... if everyone ran A Fan inspired Bussiness. Most of the year, when the Business closes, probably due to a Anime Convention. The only time, it would "stay open" is when its in walking distance from the Con.
-
he raises a good point... unless you are able to move your business to the con then bring it back.... but chances are that are only if you sell like anime n such... but that would be awesome... a mobile anime cafe or mobile anime something O.O I have thought up something brilliant
-
^It isn't like Rico's Tacos or something is it!?!?!??!
O_O
-
Mobile Cafe... hmm... makes me think like Brock from Pokemon. Too bad I didn't save enough money for a Q-Grill. But anyways back to point. People should see what kind of food I can make with a college Dorm Room stock, provided the Pantry isn't completely bare with cobwebs and the trash is full of fast food bags.
-
I always wanted a little coffee/tea anime cafe
-
I would totally be for it. J-pop music in the background, anime playing on tv's littered around the cafe, like a sports bar but with anime? Awesome
-
Anyone have any ideas of a good location?
-
I think your best bet would be finding a location near the PSU campus. Downtown or near chinatown. Or hell why not in china town? That place needs to be lifted back to its old glory, and theres lots of locations that are forclosed down there right now.
-
Would anyone like to meet up to kick this around more.
-
that'd be phunn
-
Lol me and my friends used to have this idea too, and then during the night it would be an anime disco ^_^
I only plead you provide tasty pastries!
-
Chinatown gets kinda sketchy at night, it might not be a great place if you want to stay open after 9.
PSU gets the most foot traffic as any place in portland (I think urban plaza specificly)
I've pondered opening a coffee shop (some of my friends and coworkers have done this) but it seems like a whole bunch of work, would it be simplier to just have an anime night at a coffee shop that is privately owned after it is normally close?
An all week late night coffee shop could easily turn into a life consuming project.
-
Any business is a life-consuming project :(
-
mhm. these are sacrifices. If you mind getting consumed don't get into it and if you complain your stupid lolx

Any thought on the Hollywood area? It is close to Max lots of traffic.

Close to the Avalon Wunderland too!

Got a question for ya, Mustash.
Do you know HOW to run/manage/own a restaurant? It's a lot of freakin' work, not to mention all the paper work involved, & I think there's some stupid Oregon law passed that screws small businesses out of more tax return money, or something like that.
-
If you get hesitant, here's something to think about:
Do you like the idea of running a small food establishment in the first place? If so, then the cosplay element could be your personalization of it, but I doubt you will enjoy it unless you really are interested in running a cafe/coffee shop to begin with.
It's like video games and board games...I love playing both of them, and the idea of getting involved in the industry sound fun....but sometimes the effort required to actually MAKE them means that it's not nearly as fun as it seemed it would be.

Anybody have ideas on what they would like to see on a menu.

Those would be too cool to have.

Nooo...
T_T
The little rice ball rabbits.
And Onigiri.
I suggest this stuff because the only hardware you'd really need in the kitchen is a rice cooker.
If you want to serve "real food" and not just snackies to go with tea and coffee, I also suggest normal sandwiches. Just regular deli lunchmeat stuff for the mundanes. You'd only need like, three kinds.
Deli-chan (half sandwich)
Sandwich-sempai (normal sandwich)
Hero-sama (a larger sandwich, like on a hoagie roll)
A little cheesy but whatever.

That sounds pretty good and creative. I like the titles, nice touch.
But man, that bunny Bento......that is pretty cute. ^_^
-
and they have to be called sammiches i love sammiches!!!!
-
The bunny bento is so0o0 kyuuute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(yes..it is me again. lolx)
I want one...or 7! lolx
-
I would totally join a cosplay cafe! that would be complete pwnage, cuz this town is so boring, there's nothing to do anymore since the bowling alley closed. :(
-
I'm here after a long absance just to say once again GO FOR IT!
of course, my infantile mind isn't prepared for all of this things that you would need in order to run a small business. Paperwork, most likely a degree in some sort of culinary and or business kind of thing, employees, (other than your friends) customers (other than your friends), and probably a load of other things that I can't think of off the top of my head. but hey, don't let me pull you down. I would be delighted if this actually got beond a discussion phase.
-
Would anyone like to get to gether during K-Con and talk about a Cafe
-
that would be great
-
AAAAA!!! That Bento Bunny is so kawaii!!!! ^.^ Blah, I'm in my hyper, kawaii-loving anime fangurl mode right now [Ah, SASUKE IS SO...HOT! ;D ].
But yeah, I would drag all my friends there and have my b-day party there!!!!
Oh, I have an idea..... What if you did a, like, a strawberry smoothie in a cocktail glass? It could be like a magarita for under-aged people[or people who just don't want to get wasted]. Instead of an olive, put a pocky or a half-pocky in there.
For example: Have the people order, say, a strawberry smoothie. Then, if they want[for free or a small fee], they can also choose a flavor pocky!
Maybe it could be called Kankyou. I like the ring it has to it after you say it a few times. I think it means....Fun.
Also, Kakigori in the hotter seasons. Basically it's a snowcone with condensed milk poured on top [sometimes, it could be optional if you sell it] to sweeten it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakigori
I'm thinking of the Tokyo Mew Mew Cafe with all these desserts, ha ha.
But, have you thought of decorating plans?
No idea if any of this has been said before, didn't read.
Oh, any name ideas for the cafe?
-
Sounds great, but thumbs down to the video games - they will attract teenagers. I'm kind of afraid of them.
lol, i think cosplaying+coffee+anime will attract teenagers anyway. I'm 16 and I would go with my friends
I'm 12 and I wouldn't mind[the games, that is]. Well, it depends on what video games, really. Maybe look into DDR.
Also, would you be able to COME in cosplay? Like a miniature convention, kinda. Well, not really, but would you still be able to dress up yourself?
-
Whoever is really going with this idea - I'm always available for hire. ;D
Can you say "totemo oishii waitress"?
-
hawthorne would be the perfect place for it in east portland. they have tons of crazy stores there! it would be awsome!!
-

Yeah, but rent will be very high.
-
YES YES AND YES.............YES!
-
Their is always the possibility of buying an established place and making a few changes.
-
OMG!!! That would be sooo awsome!! Does that mean that Cosplayers go there dressed up? lol I live in Salem and I cant wait for the conventions, I go to the mall as Aerith. I'm doing that today actually ((because I cant make it back to the Kumoricon :-[ I was there Saturday))
-
I'm all for it I would even apply to work there! XD since it's so close to my college, tee-hee
-
I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anything ever came of this?
Ive been looking forward to an anime cafe since luana-neko first made a post of it 2 years ago.
-
Get some Neo-Geo and Ultracade cabinets and I'm there.
-
I'd go there whenever I could, and once I get my license when I'm older I'd be there all the time. xD
-
That would be amazing! I don't live in Portland, but I would go everytime I go up there! =3
-
That's pretty much, like the best idea known the mankind. ZOMG, DO IT! You'd be rich! lol. And bring love and happyness to all!!!!!!!!!!!!1 <3
-
Patrick. I have one thing to say.
HIRE ME.
okay. that was two. XD
-
I think the best way to do this would be to try to find an existing cafe, then rent it out after hours for a cosplay night to test the market.
-
sounds fun, any new thoughts/info on this musta? I'd work there I've done semi baristaing =)
-
haha well I still plan to make one of my own when I get out of highschool
-
We could still orginize a cosplay cafe event, maybe on a weekend or holiday? If anyone wanted to show off their maid costumes / butler costumes to lots of people we could recruit them for wait staff.
Could probally rent a place with a classy dining hall and a kitchen for a few hundred dollars.
-
Too bad, I lack the personal resolve to pick up such a big task =/
-
Ugh... People, I do not have the time in my life to do this right now. I work full time and am a Student full time. I am staff at Kumoricon and the Director or Relations for another, my plate is full.
Sorry every if I got you're hopes up, but I made this post over a year ago when I was young and foolish. Things have changed since then...
Now Dear, don't go and be so pessimistic. Lolx
-
Some of my friends and I are thinking of starting a Cosplay Cafe.
*revives topic* OMG if your serious about opening a cosplay cafe, that's the COOLEST!! My dream is to work in a Maid cafe, (which is similar enough to a cosplay cafe lol) I'd come everyday, heck I'd work there, and I already come with my own cafe outfit XD (I have Ichigo Momomiya's maid cafe outfit from tokyo mew mew)
^_^
-
that would be frickin awsome ;D
-
C'mon guys, don't go reviving threads that are a year an a half old. It just messes things up.
-
I dunno tom, you might have to lock this one.
-
"This is our Dungeons and Dragons room."
What part of your parents' house is that located in?
thats just rude and uncalled for.
-
i vote yas too ;D 8) :o
