Title: Cosplay Misfortunes
Post by: ~X~Hyuuga Neji~X~ on August 26, 2008, 01:16:28 pm
Basically XD What misfortune involving cosplay(Such as preparing it, something bad happening to you in it, etc.) has fallen upon you?

I, for example, just found out today that the wig I ordered a couple weeks ago for my Medicine Seller (Mononoke) cosplay will most likely not be here until September 2nd. Day right after the con. *Sighs and goes to emo in a corner..*

Um, I tripped in my Kakashi costume on a pile of hay and bent my metal glove against the ground. XD

Also, my secret cosplay seems to be enjoying taking forever to ship to me.

And when in Kakashi, I have a habit of bumping into people. XD

Worst to date was for my first con, when at about one in the morning the night before I was supposed to fly out, I'm trying to hem the skirt for my Road Kamelot cosplay.  (Never hem your own skirts.  Srsly.)  Anyway, I get it all pinned, and then  I go to cut down the fabric so the hem's less crazy-huge, and SLIP go the scissors, up high enough to basically make it the kind of error I can't fix.  (I was Road in pants for that con.  Much vexation.)

Minazuki's first tsuba broke not once but twice at AX last summer.

I somehow managed to make the collar on my sister's black shinigami kosode wa~y too short somehow.  This was -- once again -- at the wee hours of the morning the night before going to con, only this time I was the driver, so I didn't fix it.  It turned out to look okay because she's tiny, but I'm definitely fixing that for next time she wears it!  (I also, same AX that destroyed Minazuki, managed to faceplant the Tenipuri plushie I was making her into a puddle of paint.  There were jokes all throughout con about how I'd decapitated her doubles partner.)

I guess the only good thing I can say is that I've never really injured myself making cosplays, aside from the usual minor oven burns and pinpricks.

yeah I found a good way to bind my chest but it is hard to do by yourself. Tape your boobs up then move the tape around your back from one boob to the other. The tape doesn't go across your chest so it is easier to breath....I have a link describing how to do it.

The armor for Sesshoumaru costume (which my husband cast in aluminum) will seriously bruise my chest if I wear it for more than 3 hours.
Also, the first time I wore it (SakuraCon '02), it was so popular a photo costume that it took me 3 hours to walk up one hall, and I was ready to collapse.

I think the worst things that happen to me in cosplay most of the time is when I forget to grab stuff to drink and get dehydrated.

Guys, you're supposed to breathe through your STOMACH! D8

Uhh, as for me... I'm making boot covers and we pinned the fabric on with the wrong sides together, instead of right... And since we had limited time, we couldn't go back and redo it. 8D;;; I'm still not sure how to reverse it, since the base shoe we were using is still in there... Ooooh well... I'll figure something out.

Tried to set up my wig in a ponytail, but that turned out exhausting and epically bad. I still have problems putting on wigs (its a curse). At this point I'm resorting to using my own hair plus some black hair wefts =_=

I have issues keeping food off of my cosplays for some reason. ~ ~ I usually end up staining them somehow.
For Sakuracon last year I was Kyouya, and was having a friend make the jacket for me. He put it off until right before the con, in which both of us were freaking out.
My current dilemma is whether or not to Cosplay Cloud for Kumoricon or wait and not have to rush things.

A couple years ago, I was hallucinating because the helmet on my Jenova cosplay was way, way too heavy. And when you're wandering around a anime convention seeing things too weird to be real...it's pretty trippy.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how to fix that helmet for future usage.

I think my worst "misfortune" so far would be what resulted in a scar on my hand.  I was making a pair of robot-hand gloves and ended up with too much glue on the cheap gloves I was using for a base.  The glue ate through the cheap fabric and into me and by the time I got the glue gun put down and started pulling my hand out of the glove the whole mess had merged rather nicely.  Came off with a lovely little tearing sound, I think.

Let this be a lesson to always be careful with hot things.

I don't think I have ever had a misfortune in my cosplays... save for my Misa skirt >.> It was really short and I had to use my death note to keep people from seeing my undies when I walked up the stairs x_X That and trying to play the glomp circle without people seeing them when they picked me up like crazy xD

That's why you wear the shoes a whole day before hand to break them in and get used to them. I am very glad I didn't wait to wear my home made naruto shoes. Because if I did I would have very nasty blisters but now the shoes are comfortable and stay on my feet well. ^_^

Whenever I wear my signature Shuichi costume, the black shirt *always* seems way too small and keeps riding up, no matter if it's a different shirt each time or not.

Props too- some component of a prop, no matter what costume, always seems to break or fall apart in some way......*sighs*

My sewing machines never make it through a project without something going wrong.  Ever.  I've hand stitched, or glue gunned in many desperate attempt to finish costumes.  *sigh* One day....one day I'll get through a project.   I may be taking the latest machine to the sears center today.

I've had my pants rip at the seams. Not noticeable to anyone but me who was wearing them. Man, those were uncomfortable. Finally, I just tore them off back in the hotel and went in my maid outfit the rest of the time. T'was a bad year for cosplay. I've also had someone purposefully try to break my weapon (Reno '06) because apparently they were the only person allowed to cosplay that character (and, might I add, he had a reason to feel insecure. His sucked pretty hardcore lol). He also went around breaking other people's stuff who went as that character but he couldn't break mine xD
I was like, "IDIOT" T__T ::smirk::

AAAND in the end, he was thrown out of the con.

haha, yeah, no kidding. But, in the words of Freakazoid's Astroboy-knock-off-hero: "I MUST SUCCEED!" If it doesn't get here in time I already have a backup plan, I just want it to get here since I paid for it and all.

Title: Re: Cosplay Misfortunes
Post by: EveofAbyss on August 27, 2008, 11:13:11 am
Yeah, although in my defense, I gave myself a ridiculous amount of time for this product to get here. It was supposed to ship out on the 1st, I got an email confirming the order and telling me it would ship out. So, the fact that the company failed....I can do nothing about that, lol.

But yes, advice noted. I did definitely have to wait way way longer in general than I would have liked to start and get this costume finished. Normally, this would never happen and I'll be sure to work better next year.

Last year no one even knew who I was cosplaying and that was sad, but this year I had to order alot of custom stuff for my costume because I couldn't find it in stores and none of it arrived ok, first the pants had a waist that was 10 inches too big then the next one sent was 4 inchs too small. My coat is too big but I'm just gonna have to live with that and I can't seem to get the snaps to work right.  It's been I nightmare but It should be worth it in the end.

Ello. I had a kind of awkward thing happen last year. My friend and I were about to go to the place that had the artist alley and such. So we turn the corner and there in front of me is a GIANT Gai-sensi cosplayer. (I was dressed as Tenten btw.) He said "Tenten, my student" then gave me a massive hug. It was kinda scary but looking back on it it was hilarious. After he left my friend and I just kinda of stared at each other like " What just happened and was I just groped by a random stranger?" That was my first year to.

My misfortune: I'm not dressing up, because my costume isn't going to be here on time.
Though, seeing as I have troubles putting pants on before shoes in the morning, that may be a mixed blessing.

The only misfortune I can think of is when I was sewing my giant, plush blue goat from LoZ: Twiilight Princess, the fur would get caught under my sewing machine or cover the foot completely. I got my finger under the needle and totally punched a hole in my fingernail. It hurt and bled so bad. Aaghhh

so you get/make a pattern and just hot glue it rather then sew it?  I buy the base parts because I can't sew, if that actually works I might be able to make the whole thing from scratch...cause I'm never gonna be able to sew.

While gluing bias tape onto my pants (which are a weird stretchy material), I did the top half laid out, and the bottom half glued while I was wearing them. Results? Better doing it laid out - the bottom half was kinda wrinkly.
As for the tape that actually wraps around my legs - too tight! They kinda busted when I bent down, lol. It isn't terrible though.

Hmm I may need to invest in a hot glue gun!

A small glue gun and bag of 100 sticks will cost you about ten bucks at Michaels. You can find them in the floral department. If you're not used to hot glue, get a mini white glue gun. I believe that's the one that runs at a lower temperature. It's not as beneficial or quick as the mini blue high temperature one, but if you get it on your fingers, it won't hurt nearly as bad. Make sure that if you buy a small glue gun that you buy small glue sticks. Small glue sticks are about the size of a pencil eraser around, and the large ones are about the size of a dime.

Also, check the Sunday Early edition of the Oregonian to see if there's an add with attached %40 one non-sale item coupon.

I need to find a bag of those 100 sticks. Last time I was at Micheal's I only saw a bag of 40, and I have gone through that in no time. I'm a glue addict though, lol.
Title: Re: Cosplay Misfortunes
Post by: lychee-twist on August 28, 2008, 01:57:55 pm
It's pretty standard. If they don't have it in the floral department aisles, they might have bags of 100 sticks hanging on endcaps where the floral stems are. My 100 bag is a godsend TT^TT
Title: Re: Cosplay Misfortunes
Post by: EveofAbyss on August 28, 2008, 02:00:55 pm
Nice. I've got about 6 sticks left, and I'm gonna try to make them last but if I run out, it's off to the floral section I go, heh.
Title: Re: Cosplay Misfortunes
Post by: nikkiolie on August 28, 2008, 02:39:34 pm
I have about 20 sticks left. I would buy like five packs of 30 at a time. I use it so much.

As for making costumes most of mine I've been able to just alter shirts and what not to the way I want them so i have never really used a pattern.....except once when I made a sailor collar or my costume and I hand sewed it because I had no idea how to use the machine and my parents weren't home. The a few weeks latter I made the collar for my friends at school (where I didn't have any thread) and I used glue it it looked much better than the one I made.

It won't necessarily suck, but it will be what we old folks call "a drag". ;) I totally understand, though. That's why my friends and I opted for a hotel room rather than staying over at someone's house. We all live about a half hour from the convention, but that's a lot of driving back and forth, and we can be loud, noisy, and not have any parents or siblings bugging us. Not that we have a problem with our parents or siblings, it's just... awkward.

It's kind of chipping off. For the record I was holding the glue-ee pieces together and attempting to put the cap back on the tube with my teeth.

I missed.

To top that, the pieces didn't even stick. This is the longest drying super glue ever.

I already have a wig that can work! Huzzah for random insites to the universe!

I decided to make my Judai costume last minute. XD Now I'm scrambling to find or make a red jacket and a plushy before tomorrow. And some white pants though that won't be too hard. ^^; As for last year with my Xigbar costume, my white hair die in my wig started to fade away so it remained black instead of black with white stripes.. And my very noticable red-brown hair poked out from under it constantly.. XD And I like died in the hot weather wearing all black. lol

As for the pressing back you chest I got lucky with the fact my Organization cloak was so baggy I was mistaken for a guy. XD But I'm not going to be so lucky with Judai so I personally am going to use bandages to tie myself back and prey since I'm not too gifted it'll work. xD

I am happy and sad at the same time... My blonde wig showed up just today so I will be able to do the costume with it so the Tifa has been bumped from the roster. I will do it next year with my Yomiko Readman cosplay!

Hello hello XD; Sorry I've been not replying, I'm not ignoring this place I swear. O_O

Lychee: I ended up wearing my Kusuriuri costume anyways because I decided to shell out 90 bucks for hair extensions x_X I was cosplaying him on saturday, I hope you saw me XD <3

Also, an update on a misfortune lol. I was cosplaying Obito today (For cosplay chess) And the stupid leg wrap kept falling. It had to be fixed 5 times in the course of...2 hours I believe. Also, another thing that happened last year I cosplayed him XD They ripped a hole in the crotch rofl. Thank god I wear boxers though because it made it hardly noticeable >_> <_<

Yet another happening this year though: Blisters from my Faust VIII boots, and makeup on my Faust VIII scarf as well XD I dunno if it'll wash out...

HOWEVER. I'm happy to announce that my sword for Kusuriuri made it there and back in one piece because I devised a way for it to travel safely <3 Huzzah! I hope to hear an update on more things since the con is over now XD;

Because I dyed my wig, my collar was stained burgundy. DX Despite the fact I washed the wig twice.. I hope 90% rubbing alcohol will get it out.

I was doing some last-minute touchups on my C.C. costume saturday night at the con, and the poor thing got stepped on twice by people in the hotel, since the only open space we had to leave it to dry was on the floor.  We were able to fix most of the smears, and since it was on the back of the jacket it wasn't very noticable, but it was still stressful!

Yeah, I saw you! I was the Davy Jones that quite literally went tearing after you asking you to stop for a picture. I'm still thrilled that you went as the Kusuriuri. I've got two pics of you, too! I put them up on photobucket, and the link is in the second page of the Picture link forum thread.

You seriously made my friend's and my day.

WHAT!? THere were two Kusuriuri's?! Oh man, I would've totally taken a picture of you had I known! I'm sorry. I'm a huge fangirl of the Medicine Seller. If you have a picture, I'd love to see it, and add it to my Kumoricon folder if you'd let me :) I won't take credit for it. I just add pictures to my folder if its someone I saw and liked but wasn't able to snap myself.

Yeah..XD; If I find one from someone else I'll let you know. I had a couple people take pictures...Or I'll just go take pictures on my own. >>; XD; Meh that seems to always happen to me. Someone else cosplays as Kusuriuri and...Then no one seems to care if a second one appears. *Le sigh. Emo corner*

I past out because of chest binding during my Edward (cowboy bebop) cosplay.

I would like to recommend this to you, and all other female crossplayers. A friend of mine who crossplays found this site, and while it is generally for transmen pre-op, they work wonders for female crossplayers. She told me that the material is comfortable and you can breath while your chest is effectively compressed to a male form. They are somewhat spendy but they last for a very long time and are worth not having to risk injury to yourself. While it might not work for all cosplays I hope that this helps someone... I get so worried when girls pass out from their bindings. (It has happened to my friends before, as well as large portions of ripped skin) >_<

The site is: http://t-kingdom.com/ (http://t-kingdom.com/)

As far as cosplay misfortunes for meee... the con was amazing, though I was very sad that I was unable to finish my Hakkai (Saiyuki Reload) cosplay. A few mishaps happened with the shirt and I was unable to mend them with the supplies I had at the hotel. So I just slapped on my Otacon and wore that on Sunday. Which brings me to my next bout of sadness: No one recognized me as Otacon. Even a Snake who was two feet away and looking right at me didn't notice. I also was unable to find that "This is not Snake" box while I was Otacon, I wanted a picture with it so badly. v_v

Oddly enough to funnest time I had in outfit was when I was punk!Ritsuka (or, as I was frequently, called Emo-Neko). And then I wore that outfit, minus the wig/ears and tail, at the Rave. That was beyond awesome. For the first time my favorite part of the con was not cosplaying, but instead being able to dress how I wanted (I could never wear mesh or anything dark-like at home) and all the people I met. I greatly look forward to next year and seeing everyone again!!!
