Title: How bout a Kumoricon Sock Hop?
Post by: Deviant Spider on October 15, 2008, 07:16:19 pm
This wasnt origonally my Idea. It was Eric's (AKA Pezzer) but I thought it was brilliant. It would be a dance with oldies (50's-ish) music were everyone could wear cosplay or poodle skirts. We could decorate with records and the casino room (if we chose to do that again) could still run smoothly but maybe we would win pinkslips for classic cars to turn in for prizes or something. We tend to have a more formal dance (masquerade) and last year we had the swing dance, but how bout somthing new? Thoughts? Ideas?

it would seriously be an EASY cosplay. lol. A poodle shirt and a polo. And even at the swing dance I didnt see many people dressed up swing-like, but TONS of cosplay which is always ok!

Sounds cute. I saw a poodle skirt at St V de P's the other day.

If I can go I'd come as one of the pink ladies from Grease or Olivia Newton John at the end of it. I so wanted to be her when I was like 9.

LOL sadly no. Typically its crew socks and shoes. Im sure no shoes would be a safety hazard, although I saw lots of sore feet at the swing dance outside of shoes. lol

What is a sock Hop? (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-sock-hop.htm)

that page can tell you a bit better then me what a sock hop is. the shoe thing would be something that would need to be discussed with the venue and our insurance company.

Are any anime/manga set in the '50s? Or from the '50s?

I don't know, but from what I have heard Japanese did absorb 50's culture in a sort of odd way  and we still see it's presence in anime today.  Rebellious characters still have that 50's forward facing hairstyle sometimes, this is taken to the biggest extreme possible in Katamari Damaci.

Heh, I just did a google image search for Pompadour adn the first result was a Japanese guy.  And that led me to this link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1134028352336836742

I've heard a bit more about the relationship between Japan and the American 50's culture, but I would not want to go on about it without a source I can cite.

Oh, Japan, you are random.

I know their are probably some set in the 50's....or at least when I remember them they just were 50's style. the hair and clothes. that video made me remember them since the style is sort of the same. I just need to find those series now *rummages through room and internet*

The first anime/manga that jump to my mind when I think Pompadour are Shaman King and Yu Yu Hakusho. But there are TONS more.

There are some great (albeit not anime-related) 50's homage/parody songs out there that would be fun to have folks karaoke to who come in 50's garb. Not just the obvious (Summer Lovin' and You're the One that I Want from Grease) but also, e.g., Keepin' the Faith by Billy Joel...wherein "pompadour" is actually among the lyrics!
..."combed my hair in a pompadour, like the rest of the Romeos wore, a permanent wave, yeah, we were keepin' the faith, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, keepin' the faith...." :)

I'd hope all KC contests were always open to all genders!

I just sold my square dancing outfit.....then realized maybe there might be another western attire event? (I didn't make this year's.)

@nori: ;_; It was just an idea and I dont think Sasori would look very good as a preppy poodle skirt lady. ._. I just watch to many movies and I was born in the 90's so I wouldnt really know how they acted just what my mom said makes them sound like the bad boys >_> sorry

Actually I was thinking that if we had another Western event I would
*shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't spread this too far!*
come as the cowgirl from the bounty hunting commercials on Bebop!

..........or...........
*shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don't spread this too far either!*
re-build my old Dominique the Cyclops costume
(complete with authentic metal eye patch)
from Trigun
(worn at Anime Evolution '06).

However in both cases not sure if okay to wear to all-ages...as they involve
(whispers)
push-up bras
(giggles)

It just dawned on me, maybe there is some anime or manga (or even a Japanese live action film) that is set in a timeframe later than the 1950s, but has a flashback to when the characters or their parents were alive in the '50s?

Another thought is (though not anime) something like Back to the Future where someone from the present goes back in time for some reason, and brings anachronism and positive growth (like Pleasantville). Those could be fun to cosplay from......

What if we had theme events by decade and made them educational, i.e., each having a workshop and/or display, and themed contests, around 'This was the state of anime and manga in this decade!'
